IBM, DELTA AIR LINES WPP, 4A’S, IAB, AD COUNCIL AND OTHER INDUSTRY LEADERS ACT TO MITIGATE BIAS IN ADVERTISING TECHNOLOGY

IBM Delivers Open Source Toolkit to Identify and Mitigate Bias in Advertising Technology

CANNES, France, June 20, 2022 /PRNewswire/ — Today, leading companies committed to improving fairness in marketing campaigns. The initiative, announced at the Cannes Lions International Festival of Creativity 2022, brought together agencies, brands, and other leaders to generate awareness and take action towards mitigating bias in advertising technology. Committing organizations include IBM (NYSE: IBM), Delta Air Lines, WPP, Mindshare, 4A’s, IAB and the Ad Council.

The action is the most recent effort by IBM to drive education and awareness around the impact of bias in advertising technology. In 2021, the company launched a research initiative to explore the hypothesis that bias can exist in ad technology, which initial findings confirmed. The research also showed that mitigating bias in ad technology was possible using AI tools and resources in marketing processes. More industry participation and data collection are needed to better understand the potential impact of bias on these campaigns, but several industry leaders are demonstrating early activism by raising awareness and taking action via IBM’s Advertising Fairness Pledge.

“While the risk of bias in advertising is well known, by making this commitment, these organizations are among the first in the industry to take action,” said Bob Lord, IBM Senior Vice President of The Weather Company and Alliances. “Together, we are agreeing to educate ourselves and our companies and ask other industry leaders to join us in helping to mitigate bias in advertising.”

Toward that effort, IBM also announced the release of its gratis Advertising Toolkit for AI Fairness 360, an open-source solution deploying 75 fairness metrics and 13 state-of-the-art algorithms to help identify and mitigate biases in discrete data sets. A playbook and sample code are also made available for ease of use. Organizations utilizing the toolkit may gain a better understanding of the presence and impact of bias on their ad campaigns, as well as the makeup of their audiences.

“Used correctly, data can help brands personalize consumer engagement and identify the most relevant touchpoints. However, we know that bias can exist in algorithms or technology, and that’s why we’re helping our clients to evaluate how and when to use data in a meaningful way that will benefit the customer experience,” said Mark Read, CEO of WPP. “Through WPP’s GroupM, we’ve developed the Data Ethics Compass to help clients navigate the challenges of using datasets, while IBM’s new Advertising Toolkit for AI Fairness 360 will help us to better understand the potential impact of bias. Consumers rightly expect brands to use their information in a fair way and for the industry to tackle data bias collectively, which can ultimately result in increased engagement and commercial outcomes.”

Bias is often unintentional, a result of human assumptions and judgments encoded into algorithms that can result in unfair targeting, exclusion of certain groups, and marketing campaign failures. Organizations taking the pledge can contribute data to ongoing studies that seek to better explain the impact of bias. According to Salesforce’s 2022 State of the Connected Customer survey, nearly 62 percent of consumers surveyed reported they are concerned about bias in AI, up from just 54 percent two years prior, emphasizing the imperative for brands and agencies to better understand its impacts.

“As technology and data prevalence accelerates, the risk for bias in advertising compounds. It is our duty to address this head-on,” said Adam Gerhart, Global CEO of Mindshare. “We believe the industry needs to take clear and intentional action, which is why we are committing to leverage the Advertising Toolkit for AI Fairness 360.”

As the advertising industry continues to face issues related to privacy and transparency, many organizations believe that tackling bias in ad tech could be a next key area of focus for marketers. Nearly $1 trillion was spent on digital advertising globally in 2021, much of which flows through programmatic engines that segment and target specific audiences, sometimes missing large consumer groups in the process. With increasing consumer demand for transparency in how their data is used, marketers must look for new ways to remain effective. Tapping into alternative privacy-forward data sources, such as weather data, can be effective predictors of behavior that could also help rebuild trust with consumers.

“As a global brand, we know that every decision we make, whether it’s about a supplier, an employee or an ad campaign, is a reflection of our values and the change we want to see in the world,” said Emmakate Young, Delta’s Managing Director of Brand Marketing. “We’ve long been focused on inclusive representation in our campaign creative, this effort allows us to go a step further to bring more inclusive representation to our campaign delivery.”

CGTN: Children: From ‘saplings’ to ‘forest’ for Chinese nation

BEIJING, June 3, 2022 /PRNewswire/ — Children are highly valued in the Chinese culture and viewed as the future of a family. Furthermore, their growth is vital for the future of China, a nation determined to achieve rejuvenation.

International Children’s Day, which falls on June 1, is celebrated across China every year. Chinese President Xi Jinping on Tuesday stressed efforts to promote the healthy and all-round development of children and extended festive greetings to children across the country.

Two months ago, Xi compared children to “saplings” when attending a tree-planting activity in Beijing, encouraging them to contribute to the country’s development.

“You are like saplings,” he said. “You will eventually grow into towering trees in the future and form a forest for the Chinese nation, a forest of talents.”

Underscoring China’s goal to build a great modern socialist country with Chinese characteristics by the middle of the century, he said, “You have 30 years to go. Now you are 10 years old, and you will be 40 at that time. You will become the pillars of the country.”

Xi encourages children to chase their dreams

Xi loves children and always encourages them to chase their dreams.

“A better life for children is our biggest wish,” Xi said when taking part in an event ahead of International Children’s Day in 2013.

Celebrating the festival in 2014 with students at a primary school, he said children are the future of the country and the hope of the Chinese nation.

“Heroes are cultivated from a young age. The waves behind drive on those ahead. I hope you live with dreams and aspirations,” he told the students.

In May 2013, Xi visited a school in Lushan County of Ya’an City, southwest China’s Sichuan Province, weeks after a magnitude-7.0 earthquake struck the area. In a prefabricated classroom, he attended a class meeting with pupils and encouraged them to work hard in chasing their dreams.

Nine years later, a former pupil who was in the classroom recalled Xi’s words.

“I was sitting in the front row when Grandpa Xi was standing in front of the class. With a smile, he asked what our dreams were,” said Luo Yunfang. “I remember my answer was to work as an editor because I love writing. Grandpa Xi was very pleased. He praised us for our imagination.”

Luo, now a student at Chengdu University of Technology, said she is making her dream come true.

“I joined the media center of our school and have written a lot of articles. I’m kind of living my dream bit by bit,” she said.

China’s efforts in protecting children’s rights

Since the founding of the People’s Republic of China in 1949, governments at all levels have been providing unprecedented care to children and youth, from ensuring equal access to education and sending teachers to impoverished mountain villages to investing to upgrade facilities in rural areas.

The country has put in place a legal system of more than 100 laws and regulations that comprehensively protect the rights and interests of women and children, according to a white paper released in June last year by the State Council Information Office.

Several laws and regulations have been newly drafted or amended over the past decade to further strengthen the protection of the rights and interests of minors. Two major moves are a revision to the minor protection law, which came into effect on June 1, 2021, and the Law on Family Education Promotion implemented on January 1, 2022.

Meanwhile, China is stepping up efforts to reduce the excessive workloads of students to promote healthy and all-round development.

In July last year, China launched a “double reduction” policy to address the excessive academic burden on primary and middle school students and the over-heated off-campus tutoring.

After the implementation of the new policy, offline off-campus training institutions that offer curriculum subject programs have been reduced by 83.8 percent nationwide, and online training institutions have been reduced by 84.1 percent, data from the Ministry of Education showed.

Tencent Teams Up with SOOS OIO to Level Up Healthy Gameplay in Singapore

A series of hybrid events to promote intergenerational communication and digital wellbeing amongst local youths

SINGAPORE, May 22, 2022 /PRNewswire/ — With the number of video gamers in Singapore expected to hit 3 million by 2026, video and mobile gaming has touched the lives of many internet users, serving as a conduit to form meaningful social connections and a platform to cultivate prosocial behaviours. Against this landscape, Tencent has partnered local social enterprise SOOS OIO to organise a series of parenting webinar, workshops and community gaming tournaments at this year’s Digital For Life Festival, organised by Singapore’s Infocomm Media Development Authority (IMDA).

The events, which span across two weekends (21-22 May, 28-29 May), seek to advocate digital wellness among the public, and more specifically support the growth of a healthy, inclusive and balanced gameplay environment for everyone in Singapore. The collaboration taps on SOOS OIO’s local networks and experience working with Singaporean parents and youths, as well as Tencent’s global expertise in shaping a positive gameplay environment.

“We are proud to be part of the Digital For Life Festival to drive greater awareness about the importance of digital wellness, and how the digital sphere, including online gaming, enables new possibilities and empowers the digital society,” said Stanley Sun, head of publishing technology services of Interactive Entertainment Group (IEG) at Tencent. “As a game publisher, we continuously work to build a healthy and inclusive gaming ecosystem, in close collaboration with organisations like SOOS OIO in Singapore.”

SOOS OIO believes that video and mobile gaming serve not only as a social platform for community building, but an educational medium to develop critical thinking and communications skills. “Play is an integral part of learning and we believe that video gaming constitutes play on a different playground. It offers development for every youth across cognitive, emotional and social aspects,” said Pauline Phoon, founder of SOOS OIO. “Misconceptions around gaming often arise from a lack of understanding about the nature of games and the benefits it can bring. Together with Tencent, we hope to bring awareness among parents and community in Singapore about the various ways gaming can be leveraged for digital wellness, social and cognitive skills, and most importantly – as a means of connecting with children.”

“We thank SOOS OIO, Tencent and all partners for joining us to organise the parenting workshops and community gaming tournaments at the inaugural Digital for Life Festival, enabling our youths to learn the importance of healthy gaming, while strengthening social connections between family, friends and community,” said Ms Dawn Low, Cluster Director for Digital Readiness and Digital for Life programme office at IMDA.

Accompanying her sons to the community gaming tournament (TeleMatch Brawl Stars) on May 22, Anne Soh, mother of Jesse Tan (23 years old) and Jakin Tan (21 years old), shared, “I am glad that my sons are now able to share their strategies for healthy gaming with others through various platforms like social media and casting for competitions. From having to adhere to time limits I set for them when they were young, they have now progressed to being able to self-regulate their gaming schedules. I hope more parents will be able to engage with their children on ways to integrate gaming into a healthy and balanced lifestyle.”

Through the various activities planned for the Digital For Life Festival 2022, Tencent and SOOS OIO hope to demystify gaming for parents, engage youths to form healthy gaming habits, foster healthy familial relationships through gaming, and realise the benefits of play for everyone. These activities include:

Webinar on Understanding Games, Gamers and Game Dependency

During the webinar, parents were equipped with the framework needed to better understand games, gamers and game dependency, which allowed them to better appreciate the motivations behind certain gaming behaviour. The participants were also exposed to various communication strategies as well as a brief introduction to neurofeedback intervention – with the overall goal of improving parent-child communication and relationships.

Parenting Challenge Workshops: Communicating & Engaging Gaming Youths at Home through Role Play

As a follow up to the webinar, participants put the theories and communications strategies learnt to good use through role play sessions of common scenarios in families. These practical sessions helped to contextualise the learnings and deepened participants’ understanding of the theories through re-enactment in a safe environment.

TeleTrip Festival

Families and friends teamed up to battle each other in a casual and community-style gaming tournament, uniquely designed to be inclusive and fun for all. Two family-friendly game titles, Brawl Stars and Roblox: Super Striker League were featured in the telematches – albeit with a twist through a special rewards system that celebrates a myriad of accomplishments, beyond just the highest score. This serves to ignite participants’ creative, strategic gameplay and teamwork while ensuring that the games are accessible to every member of the family.

Following its Singapore office launch in late 2020, Tencent recently launched Level Infinite, the company’s global games publisher arm in Singapore. “Through our collaborations, we are also enabling the sustainable growth of the gaming industry by nurturing young talents, supporting local studios and investing in innovation in Singapore, and around the world,” Sun concluded.

MUNICH, May 8, 2022 /PRNewswire/ — On Mother’s Day, Yadea, a leading electric two-wheeler brand, is celebrating moms around the world with the launch of its #LegendaryMom social media campaign, incorporating a new Mother’s Day video and a poster. At the center of Yadea’s Mother’s Day campaign is an energetic rap that embodies the brand’s youthful spirit and pays homage to the diverse identities of the modern mom.

As a brand, Yadea has always recognized and supported the plethora of roles that modern mothers occupy in our lives. This film pays tribute to the idea that all mothers around the world are absolutely and unquestionably legendary,” said Aska Zeng, General Manager at Yadea.

A celebration of the modern mom, Yadea’s #LegendaryMom campaign asks audiences to reflect on the diverse roles their mom played, and continue to play, in their lives, from educator to businesswoman and advocate for sustainable living. As their first teacher, mothers are the ones who help kids navigate every aspect of the world, from changing their diapers to helping them study for the big high school exam and enabling them to thrive professionally as they head off to work. They shape children into their best selves – as the rap says: “All your good qualities, they’re hereditary.” Finally, as a “true boss” lady and “real go-getter,” Yadea acknowledges that modern moms are eco-warriors that take action and use sustainable means of transportation to ensure the next generation become leaders in protecting the earth.

Yadea’s #LegendaryMom video launched across the brand’s social media platforms on May 8, 2022, alongside a dedicated Mother’s Day post, which celebrates the diverse roles mothers play, and invites its audience to share pictures to celebrate their own #LegendaryMom on social media.

As a reflection of Yadea’s continued efforts to empower mothers around the globe, the #LegendaryMom campaign forms part of the brand’s larger commitment to support moms as they raise their little ones. Yadea helps mothers guide their children to understand and protect the most important mother of all – Mother Earth – and makes life easier for parents with innovative products, such as its unique kids series. Dot Inc. Announces the World’s First Tactile Braille Display, Compatible with iPhone and iPad

  • New Dot Pad display from Dot Inc. helps blind/low-vision users feel tactile images in real-time
  • It will be showcased at the CSUN’s Assistive Technology Conference in March 2022
  • Dot Pad is now available to developer communities and early adopters on Dot’s official website

SEOUL, South Korea, March 11, 2022 — Today, Dot Inc. introduced Dot Pad, the world’s first tactile braille display for developer communities and early adopters. Dot Pad is compatible with iPhone and iPad, along with Apple’s built-in screen reader, VoiceOver. Dot’s new device offers blind/low-vision users a refreshable tactile display with the option to touch whatever is displayed on the screen, bringing the community one step closer to digital equality.

The task of creating a viable and refreshable tactile display for blind/low-vision users has posed one of the greatest challenges for developers in this industry for years. Traditionally, tactile displays only had one line, and were primarily connected with computers and phones to translate written text to Braille. However, they always lacked the technical capability to display graphical elements such as images, maps, and UI, ultimately limiting the experience. Dot Inc. aimed at and succeeded in creating the tactile display that pushes through the boundaries and expands the possibilities of digital accessibility.

Dot Pad helps blind/low-vision users render images and text from iPhone or iPad to the tactile display instantaneously. Dot Pad is compatible with devices running iOS 15.2 or later, or iPadOS 15.2 or later. VoiceOver support for tactile representations of images and graphics builds on Apple’s long history of creating and supporting accessible technology.

"Many blind/low-vision users around the world rely on iPhone and iPad, due to the industry-leading screen-reader VoiceOver," said Dot Inc. co-founder Eric Ju Yoon Kim. "We are very excited that Dot’s tactile technology is now optimized for VoiceOver, and that this will expand digital accessibility. Beyond speech or literary braille, these users can now feel and improve their understanding of images."

A new tactile graphic API was made available to iOS developers around the globe starting with iOS 15.2. Using this new API, developers and creators can supplement existing apps with tactile content as well as create new apps to utilize the full set of Dot Pad features.

"My wish is that many global developers within Apple’s ecosystem can use this API to develop games, entertainment, and educational apps compatible with our tactile display," said Ki Kwang Sung, co-founder at Dot Inc. "There is a growing opportunity for blind/low-vision users to connect through visual games and educational tools."

Dot Pad is now available to developer communities and early adopters on Dot’s official website.

Dot Inc. is providing technology support for an expanded Dynamic Tactile Device project with the American Printing House for the Blind and HumanWare slated to be launched in 2023. Learnings from the Dot Pad developer community will contribute to that project, which is considered to be the industry’s most ambitious effort in braille and tactile technology to date.

CGTN: Beijing Winter Paralympic Games reflect more than just sports

BEIJING, March 3, 2022 — Promoting sports for persons with disabilities has become an integral part of China’s drive to help the country’s disabled. Hosting the 2022 Winter Paralympic Games will create more opportunities for persons with disabilities and enable them to realize their dreams, says Zhang Haidi, chairwoman of the China Disabled Persons’ Federation and head of the Beijing Winter Paralympics Chinese delegation, in her exclusive article for Decision Makers. Decision Makers is CGTN’s global platform for influential leaders to share their insights on events shaping today’s world.

Beijing Winter Paralympic Games reflect more than just sports
Beijing Winter Paralympic Games reflect more than just sports

Zhang was an important member of Beijing’s Bid Delegation for the 2022 Olympics and Paralympics Games. According to her, the Beijing 2008 Paralympic Games greatly helped promote the development of the work on disability in China. Since 2016 we have witnessed the continuous progress of China’s winter parasports, with the number of athletes increasing from less than 50 to over 1,000, covering all major events of the Winter Games.

To embrace the Beijing 2022 Paralympic Games, Zhang says that China has made full preparations, ranging from setting up a competitive winter Paralympic team to building the National Ice Sports Arena for People with Disabilities and many other new accessibility facilities.

As the host country for the 2022 Paralympic Games, China is determined to promote the development of the work on disability, improve the overall level of parasports, and encourage more people with disabilities to engage in sports. It’s worth mentioning that China was amongst the earliest countries that called for developing a UN convention to safeguard the rights and interests of persons with disabilities, and was among the first groups of countries to sign the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities. Meanwhile, active efforts have been made in promoting the inclusion of disability issues into the 2030 Sustainable Development Agenda.

In short, Zhang says that the Paralympic Games play an important role in protecting the rights and interests of people with disabilities, improving their living conditions and raising social awareness. The success of the 2008 Beijing Paralympic Games paved the way for the host of the 2022 Winter Paralympic Games to provide a stage for all people with disabilities to realize their dreams and present their perseverance, determination, and possibilities to the whole world.

China.org.cn on Beijing 2022: Where passion and warmth sparkle

BEIJING, Feb. 18, 2022 — A report from China.org.cn on Beijing 2022:

Here are some touching and positive stories on Beijing 2022.

American athlete Tessa Maud shared on her social platform a heartfelt moment at the opening ceremony when a volunteer greeted her with a loud "welcome to China", a gesture that literally moved her to tears.

The Canadian delegation’s operations staff wrote a letter to the Chinese staff working in their building, thanking them for their efficiency and warmth.

A Chinese netizen sent American-Samoan athlete Nathan Crumpton a cartoon image of him showing up shirtless at the opening ceremony. Later people found out that he had stuck the cartoon image to his skeleton.

Sportsmanship has been well displayed in these games. China’s curling team lost a match to the U.S., but Chinese players presented Bing Dwen Dwen badges to their American counterparts. Later, the American pair also sent gifts in return.

When Gu Ailing won gold at the Big Air event, she hugged the other two medalists and comforted French athlete Tess Ledeux as she wept. Then at the press conference, Gu Ailing said it was Tess who inspired her to go all-in on her last jump.

At this Olympics, many athletes were pushing their limits and competing against themselves, which won admiration and respect from audiences. Japanese skater Yuzuru Hanyu challenged himself to finish a quadruple Axel; Canadian snowboard athlete Max Parrot returned after recovering from cancer and chemo and managed to clinch a gold medal. German speed skater Claudia Pechstein is still on the ice rink at the ripe age of 49 despite her stellar Olympic CV. For them, the Olympics is about striving for their passion and sparing no efforts to continue their dreams. Just like what Mr. Coubertin said, "the most important thing in the Olympic Games is not winning but taking part."

Sports are not about politics but all about challenging human limits, and inspiring and including more people in these events. Let sports be just sports, and celebrate faster, higher, stronger, together at these Games. Enjoy!
