Maxeon Solar Technologies Earns Prestigious LEED Gold Certification

Solar cell production plant in the Philippines becomes company’s fifth global facility with recognized green building standards

SINGAPORE, Jan. 19, 2021 — Maxeon Solar Technologies, Ltd. (NASDAQ:MAXN), a global leader in solar innovation, announced today that its Maxeon solar cell fabrication facility in Laguna, Philippines, has been awarded Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design for Building Design and Construction (LEED BD+C) Gold certification for its environmental performance and sustainable operations, making it the fifth building to meet sustainable LEED standards for the company.

LEED is a green building certification program developed by the non-profit U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC) and used worldwide. It is a transparent process that includes a set of rating systems for the design, construction, operation, and maintenance of green constructions aiming to help building owners and operators be environmentally responsible and use resources efficiently. In particular, LEED for Building Design and Construction (LEED BD+C) provides a framework for planning and building a holistic green edifice, giving the opportunity to implement every sustainability feature and maximizing the benefits.

"We are honored to receive this designation which is an international symbol of excellence and recognizes our efforts towards sustainability, a green environment and the preservation of human health," said Lindsey Wiedmann, Chief Legal Officer and Global Environment, Social, Governance (ESG) Executive Leader at Maxeon Solar Technologies. "We hold ourselves and our products to a higher standard, and believe in delivering solar technologies as clean as the energy they produce. We have five LEED-certified buildings, including three LEED Gold manufacturing sites and two LEED Platinum administrative buildings. We’re proud to tell our customers that every Maxeon IBC solar cell we make will now come from a LEED Gold-certified facility."

The Philippines manufacturing site received LEED BD+C Gold certification for implementing, during the planning and construction phase of the new edifice, a number of measurable strategies and solutions that aimed at achieving high performance in the certification’s six categories: sustainable sites, water efficiency, indoor environmental quality, materials and resources, energy and atmosphere, innovation and design.

Some of the features that helped the plant earn its attestation include:

  • Sustainable site – During the site development phase, the impact of construction on the environment was minimal, with about 20% vegetated open space maintained. The site is also designed with bicycle racks, showers, and changing facilities for employees. A solar carport, roof with high reflectance index and open grid pavement contributed to a more sustainable environment.
  • Water Efficiency – A 50.45% reduction in water use for all plumbing fixtures over conventional use was demonstrated. The presence of native plants and turfing eliminates permanent irrigation system.
  • Energy & Atmosphere – In parallel to the building’s efficient energy systems such as lighting and cooling, a wafer fab facility requires a great amount of electricity for production use. Most equipment that discharges a great amount of heat were designed to recover waste heat for process water heating. The completed energy model demonstrated a 16.7% improvement over  the ASHRAE standard.
  • Materials and resources – The site’s construction waste management plan ensured that 93% of construction waste was diverted from the landfill. The building’s envelope retains 96% of the previous building’s structure.
  • Indoor Air Quality – Best practices were implemented to prevent indoor air pollution during construction, and employee surveys are regularly conducted to continue to ensure staff comfort and health.
  • Innovation – The plan for ongoing operation includes the implementation of green cleaning and green purchasing policies, solid waste management and further reductions in water and energy use. Furthermore, a 225kWp solar panel grid-tie system was recently energized on the manufacturing rooftop.

"In all new developments, Maxeon will continue to hold itself to a high standard to protect the environment and be a leader in sustainability," added Jeff Waters, CEO at Maxeon Solar Technologies. "Each employee embraces it as their goal to preserve and regenerate our environment, and to contribute to Maxeon’s global environmental stewardship."

Kohler showcases new additions to its smart home portfolio during the virtual CES 2021 including:

Stillness Bath: This experiential bath draws its inspiration from Japanese forest bathing, or shinrin-yoku. Water, light, fog and aromas converge to create an immersive journey of the senses designed to relax the mind, soothe the body, and renew the spirit. Transforming the bathroom into a spa-like environment for quiet mindfulness, the Stillness Bath offers a sanctuary for self-care and wellbeing. It starts with water filling from the bottom of the bath, overflowing into the Hinoki wood mote to create a soothing sound. Full spectrum lighting surrounds the bath, setting the mood, and creating a chromatherapy experience. Fog then envelopes the surface of the Stillness Bath, immersing the bather in a feeling of deep relaxation. Finally, essential oils can be added into the bath’s experience tower which softly emits invigorating aromas to stimulate the senses and promote focus.

Innate Intelligent Toilet: Innate is the newest addition to Kohler’s portfolio of intelligent products. The Innate includes all the comfort, convenience, and cleanliness features that people expect from Kohler’s broad offering of intelligent toilets at a more affordable price. Innate includes a heated seat, auto open and close, intuitive remote, and personal bidet functionality. Further, as many homeowners look for more DIY projects, Innate features Kohler’s easy, ready-lock installation.

Touchless Residential Bathroom Faucet: The touchless bathroom faucet offers hands-free activation for washing hands, brushing teeth, and other daily tasks. Having the ability to wash hands at the end of the bathroom routine without touching the handles of the faucet decreases the potential spread of bacteria and germs in the space. Kohler launches an integrated faucet with embedded sensors as well as a remote puck that allows for a retrofit solution add-on to any KOHLER single control bathroom faucet.

Kohler and Phyn Partnership: Kohler will launch two co-branded products with Phyn in 2021 – the KOHLER Whole Home Water Monitor Powered by Phyn – a DIY unit and a Pro version with an automatic shut off. These products represent a continued evolution of the company’s focus on water safety and peace of mind. Both products leverage Phyn’s patented, best-in-class, high-definition pressure wave analysis to monitor water flow to immediately notify a homeowner if a leak is detected anywhere in the home and to provide detailed insights into how each fixture uses water. The DIY version mounts under a single sink and can be easy installed by a homeowner. The Pro variation is installed at a water main, either inside or outside the home, and can mitigate costly damage through an automatic water shutoff feature.

Always focused on improving upon its solutions to benefit the consumer, Kohler has expanded several smart home technologies that incorporate new features:

  • The brand’s collection of KOHLER Konnect voice-activated and touchless kitchen faucets now offers a "wash hand" command that walks consumers through the recommended steps for proper handwashing, activating the water for wetting and rinsing, along with audible guides for lathering and cleaning.
  • Kohler Power is launching a first-to-market voice feature that allows homeowners to access and activate functions of their standby generators through simple voice commands. Individuals can easily check on their KOHLER generator through smart devices whenever and wherever they are. Having this easy access ensures a home is running at its best and provides peace of mind when homeowners are away.

Kohler will continue to share new product innovations and industry leadership with the launch of its first-ever two-day digital event, Kohler@Home, February 2 and February 3. Additional event information and registration can be accessed at Kohler.com/AtHome.

Terminus Group: AI CITY reshapes life when productivity returns

BEIJING, Dec. 25, 2020 — How will the future city look like? It’s not that hard to give an accurate answer to that question if you are familiar with the latest research in the field of urban digitalization. Yet it’s still not easy to pinpoint every aspect contributing to the successful digital transformation.

"A city is like an organism. The functions of the individuals who create sustainable economic value are the key factors when deciding on how a city should operate. AI CITY is a bold attempt to interconnect every part of the city’s ‘body’ through the means of the digitalization – enable seamless digit transmission, and build up an organic living entity for the residents to maximize their productivity as well as their living experience," said Victor Ai, founder and CEO of Terminus Group, at the urban tech forum held by Terminus Group in southwest China’s Chongqing city.

Terminus’ AI CITY, the world’s first urban digitization pilot project, is currently being under construction in Chongqing. Launched in April this year, the campus-style project follows its mission to create an area maximizing residents’ effectiveness through the digital interconnection and data utilization. Aiming to utilize AI CITY’s digital ecosystem, Terminus Group partnered with over 40 tech companies from China and aboard on this forum to bring the most leading-edge innovations and digital technologies to the region. The tech alliance includes digit system providers, AI labs, producers of consumer goods, live-streaming platforms and manufacturers of tech devices.

"The era of the AI CITY is coming. The grain of the city is becoming smaller and smaller, and the individual functions become intertwined. Multiple activities can occur in all kinds of spaces because of digital technology, therefore becoming merged physically and digitally. We need to find a way of designing cities which will maximize the effectiveness for people, rather than necessarily large organizations alone, as they were in the past," said Dennis Frenchman, professor of Urban Design and Planning at Massachusetts Institute of Technology, and senior partner at Tekuma Frenchman urban design studio. Tekuma Frenchman is an incubator for future city innovation using design thinking to empower people to solve complex challenges for cities and improve the quality of life. Through cutting-edge research emerging from MIT, it aims to reshape 21st century cities where innovation and the digital economy thrives.

According to Frenchman, 20th-century cities were planned in a way enabling the segmentation of spaces depending on their functional purposes. Every space and every building were designed with economic thought in mind. However, the purpose that today’s cities serve far exceed just social gatherings. Public spaces, with the mixed function areas, now have the potential to unleash people’s productivity because of digital technologies.

The world’s first AI CITY pilot project in Chongqing is now becoming a witness of this great transformation. The AI CITY features an unprecedented urban digital environment, including the application of "OTA" in the city for the first time. "OTA", stating for "Over-The-Air Technology", enabling the city to evolve or upgrade naturally on its own. The software of Terminus’ AI CITY, leveraged by the OTA solutions, will now be able to answer the users’ personalized requests flexibly and instantly, offering tailor-made, complete systematic solutions.

Digital technologies nowadays allow us to have a much finer grained orientation and use of time, which affects the rapid changes in production, knowledge accumulation, and nature protection. Everything has changed including the way we produce objects and complex mechanized machines, and other things we do in order to live. In a nutshell, what has happened is that all production became ultimately disaggregated down to the level of the individual.

"The production is returning to cities. In fact, it already returned – there are estimates that 30% of all production occurs in the home," Frenchman summarized at the forum, adding that as knowledge and information multiply at a crazy speed, and our abilities to interact with it, and the channels and ways we have to "interact with this knowledge" are also multiplying. The trend is that for all these information exchange to be happening through the physical environment – the city. The AI CITY therefore will meet the demand of turning the physical environment into a digital one.

"On a day-to-day basis, we don’t have to be tied into these devices anymore. The AI devices will surround us. In the walls, in the furniture and objects that we use, the walls can actually ‘speak’," said Frenchman.

5G and Wi-Fi 6 to Disrupt Communication Protocols of Building Automation Systems

Emerging wireless technologies and ‘Everything over IP’ approach will have a major impact on the market, finds Frost & Sullivan

SANTA CLARA, Calif., Dec. 10, 2020 — Frost & Sullivan’s recent analysis, Advancements in Communication Protocols Transforming Building Automation Systems (BAS), finds that open communication protocols help BAS provide better interoperability and connectivity among connected devices than proprietary protocols. Features such as scalability, networking flexibility, and interoperability offer smoother integration of third-party devices to the BAS network. With multiple proprietary communication protocols, the lack of a common communication standard among devices and systems is one of the major challenges hampering the market growth. Non-traditional building automation communication protocols are emerging due to the increase in IoT devices. Therefore, leading players are now working toward developing IP-based communication standards that can work alongside the existing communication standards.

For further information on this analysis, please visit: http://frost.ly/4tn.

"5G and Wi-Fi 6 will have a major impact on the connectivity of building technologies and are likely to accelerate the growth of IoT. 5G can provide greater accessibility when managing buildings more remotely, and Wi-Fi 6 can provide faster data transfer speed between devices and enhance device performance at low energy utilization standards," said Harikrishnan Manoharan, Senior Research Analyst, TechVision at Frost & Sullivan. "On the other hand, the emergence of IoT in BAS has somewhat blurred the lines of traditional networking standards. Protocols such as LoRaWan, MQTT, OPC-UA, and IQRF remove the need for all the IoT devices to be physically connected to the same network in the BAS and allow limitless connectivity and expansion scope."

Harikrishnan added, "One of the key communication trends in the industry is the ‘Everything over IP’ approach, which provides high levels of standardization, reliability, and availability in building automation communication standards. Leading industry players are, therefore, working toward developing IP-based communication standards that can work alongside the existing communication standards. Initiatives such as Project Connected Home over IP, IP-Blis, and the recent strategic partnership between Cisco and Schneider Electric are a few examples."

Ongoing smart building or green building development initiatives and facility managers focusing on improving the tenant experience are factors driving the adoption of emerging technologies. The following growth opportunities should also be considered:

  • Building automation service providers need to consider IP-based communication standards as they help access multiple channels for communication.
  • BAS suppliers and connected device manufacturers need to increasingly focus on enabling IP as the standardized communication protocol to improve interoperability between devices without complex and expensive gateways.
  • New product innovation and integration should be leveraged to their full potential to introduce efficient products in the market and stay competitive.
  • Considering the possibilities in emerging technologies, building automation suppliers must partner with reputed and reliable system integrators and acquire innovative startups to bring best-in-class solutions to the BAS market.

Advancements in Communication Protocols Transforming Building Automation Systems is the latest addition to Frost & Sullivan’s TechVision research and analyses available through the Frost & Sullivan Leadership Council, which helps organizations identify a continuous flow of growth opportunities to succeed in an unpredictable future.

HokuApps – The Engine for Roofing Southwest’s Growth to U.S. National Prominence

Launched in 2018, HokuApps-Designed Mobile App Has Allowed Roofing Southwest Continue Contactless Work Throughout the COVID-19 Pandemic

HOUSTON, Dec. 9, 2020 — Since its founding in 1971, Phoenix, AZ-based Roofing Southwest has grown into a national player in all 50 states, ranking it the #14 roofing companies in the country. As part of its corporate culture, the firm has always placed a high priority in adopting new technology, with one of the most significant advances occurring in 2018 when they partnered with HokuApps to develop a groundbreaking mobile roofing app.

Available for iOS on the App Store, the software allowed Roofing Southwest to dramatically reduce the number of staff and in-person visits required for routine inspections, on-site crew management, daily work updates and security alerts. Over the past three years, the relationship never waned as HokuApps continued to work with the company, responding to feedback with steady updates and refinements. Perhaps the most significant advantage of the app has been felt with the COVID-19 pandemic. Thanks to the app’s powerful tools, Roofing Southwest has been able to maintain "business as usual" while easily adhering to virus safety guidelines such as contactless interactions. The app even incorporated a "start day inspection" questionnaire to check whether any of the crew were in proximity to a COVID patient, a tool which was previously done on-site with paper forms.

It is HokuApps’ perspective that business relationships don’t end once the app is deployed. They value a long association with their clients and believe in a philosophy of steady evolution which benefits everyone involved. Before HokuApps began working with Roofing Southwest, the company had relied on a hodgepodge of paper forms, decentralized data storage and a disparate collection of software applications that were not necessarily even compatible. The app’s deployment instantly reduced wait-times and finally enabled real-time collaboration between engineers, field inspectors and foremen across the 50-state organization to exponentially boost Roofing Southwest’s efficiency, accuracy, and customer service experience. These great advantages proved to have perfect timing with the spread of COVID-19 and the mandated safety precautions.

"We are proud of our long association with Roofing Southwest and always give them the best possible support in terms of upgrades and updates," said Nand Kapoor, Director of HokuApps. "In the three years that they have used this app, it has become a critical driver in the company’s transition to a technology-driven, highly efficient business. Nothing exemplifies this more than the way they were able to smoothly ride through the COVID-19 crisis with minimal disruptions to their workflows and deliveries."

"I would say that this app built by HokuApps for us has been a savior in these difficult times of COVID-19," said R.J. Radobenko, President, Roofing Southwest. "Though it had already more than proved its worth in the past, in these difficult days of the pandemic, with all the social distancing requirements, that it has proved invaluable.  We would have been severely impacted if we still relied on the old paper-based reporting system that required extensive face-to-face interactions."

About HokuApps

HokuApps is the fast-growing technology platform that empowers organizations to develop innovative technology solutions incredibly fast. The rapid application development platform has enhanced mobile and data integration capabilities to enable companies to speedily deploy mobile and web applications. HokuApps empowers organizations to usher in their digital transformation journey to better engage with customers, partners, and employees.

AI technologies will also be applied in 10 industrial parks including Tianfu Smart Production Industrial Park and Qingbaijiang European Industrial Park to support regional industrial upgrades.

In September, Chinese communication technology giant Huawei agreed to build an AI-based big data center in the Chengdu Hi-Tech Industrial Development Zone. The project will result in an integrated big data processing center to serve economic development of Chengdu and its neighboring Chongqing city. There will also be three platforms to support Chengdu’s urban management, AI innovation and digital economy. Huawei’s total investment will be around 10.9 billion yuan.

According to local officials, the urban management platform will support smart development in fields such as traffic, security, healthcare, contingency management, education and environmental protection. The innovation-supporting platform will help local research institutes carry out advanced technology development.

Representatives from Huawei said the big data center will help the company build an industrial chain with products and solutions "developed in Chengdu, manufactured in Chengdu, and applied in Chengdu and beyond". The big data center will support Huawei’s research and development while meeting computing and data storage demand of key industries across the city.

The center will bring Huawei’s advanced technologies in 5G, cloud, AI and computing to serve Chengdu’s new infrastructure projects and smart city construction, the telecoms giant said.

In June, Chinese internet search giant Baidu joined hands with the Chengdu Hi-tech Industrial Development Zone to promote its self-driving taxi service, the Apollo Go Robotaxi, in Chengdu. The movement will support the autonomous driving sector’s development in the city.

Chengdu Supercomputing Center, the first of its kind in Southwest China, started trial operations in September. Government officials said the supercomputing center will strongly support AI industry growth in the region.

A representative from the center said designers had considered using the center to support local AI development even before its construction started. The center can meet various AI computing demands and will help to lower developers’ investment and operational costs.

In the future, the center will attract more computing professionals while establishing partnerships with leading universities and institutes.

To build a national pilot zone for next-generation AI, Chengdu will promote cooperation among universities, research institutions and enterprises for industrialization of research results. The zone is expected to become an important technological engine to drive local growth, making Chengdu and the broader region that encompasses Chengdu and Chongqing an influential innovation hub in China.

The move is expected to create a better development environment for businesses, allowing them to enjoy better infrastructure, data and talent resources, according to local officials.
