Huawei vows to empower ASEAN’s green development with digital power innovations

KUALA LUMPUR, Malaysia, July 16, 2021 — Global leading ICT technologies provider Huawei will leverage its digital power innovations to enable ASEAN’s cooperation on climate change and green development, said Jeffery Liu, President of Huawei Asia Pacific at the online ASEAN-China Digital Economy Development and Cooperation Forum 2021 on Friday.

Climate change and environmental issues are becoming global challenges. Though carbon emissions declined over the past year due to the economic slowdown and worldwide lockdowns, emissions are rapidly rebounding as economies reopen. Shifting to a circular economy and achieving sustainable development is now a common goal for all countries.

Potential climate change has a significant regional impact with six of the 20 most vulnerable countries in the world being ASEAN member states. ASEAN has taken actions to address climate change through various environmental, economic and social activities over the years. Thailand, for example, has set a target of reaching peak carbon emissions in 2030 and then achieving net zero emissions in 2065.

This morning Jeffery Liu, President of Huawei APAC, shared his vision for a green industrial revolution with carbon neutrality enabled by innovative technologies.
This morning Jeffery Liu, President of Huawei APAC, shared his vision for a green industrial revolution with carbon neutrality enabled by innovative technologies.

"Globally we need a green industrial revolution with the goal of carbon neutrality. As the digital economy grows, accelerating emission reduction could also help countries to manage the risk of trade barriers and secure more free trade agreements," said Jeffery Liu.

ICT technologies are important enablers of energy conservation and emissions reduction in other industries. It is estimated that the reduction in carbon emissions in other industries enabled by ICT technologies will be 10 times the amount of carbon emitted by the ICT industry itself.

"Huawei has been leveraging its extensive experience in power electronics and energy storage as well as technical expertise in 5G, cloud, and other innovative technologies, to develop its digital power business and provide digital power solutions for different industries," said the Huawei Asia Pacific President.

To promote renewable energy, Huawei has deployed its digital power solutions in more than 170 countries and regions, serving one third of the world’s population. As of December 2020, these solutions have generated 325 billion kWh of electricity from renewable sources, and saved a total of 10 billion kWh of electricity. These efforts have resulted in a reduction of 160 million tons in CO2 emissions.

In Singapore, for example, Huawei FusionSolar Solution has supported Sunseap Group, a solar energy solutions provider, to build one of world’s largest offshore floating Photovoltaic (PV) farms. With 13,312 solar panels, 40 inverters, and more than 30,000 floats, this five-hectare sea-based solar plant is estimated to produce up to 6,022,500 kWh of energy per year, supplying enough power for 1250 four-room public housing flats on the island and offsetting an estimated 4258 tons of carbon dioxide.

"Huawei is committed to promoting green integrated ICT solutions to help other industries conserve energy and cut emissions," said Jeffery Liu, "We will cooperate with ASEAN to minimize the carbon footprint by leveraging clean power generation, electric transportation, and smart energy storage, for an energy-efficient, eco-friendly low-carbon society."

Global Trade Defies Expectations in 2021 and Drives Recovery, Finds Latest DMCC Report on the ‘Future of Trade’

The US-China relationship will be central to the shaping of global trade

Uptake of technologies will continue to transform global trade and trade financing

A new age of protectionism identified as a key risk

Sustainability remains top of the political and corporate agenda, despite the pandemic. Carbon pricing is set to emerge as a key global issue.

Full report can be accessed here: www.futureoftrade.com

DUBAI, UAE, June 9, 2021 — Global trade will rebound in 2021 after showing surprising resilience in 2020 despite the economic challenges posed by the pandemic, according to DMCC’s latest special edition Future of Trade 2021 report titled, "Defying predictions and driving the post-pandemic economic recovery."

To view the Multimedia News Release, please click:  https://www.multivu.com/players/uk/8910051-global-trade-defies-expectations-in-2021-latest-dmcc-report-future-of-trade/

The report released today highlights that global trade will underpin strong global economic growth in 2021 and beyond, with the US and Chinese economies leading the way. This growth has defied expectations of double-digit annual declines, which had been estimated between 13-32% by the World Trade Organisation. For example, Dubai, a major trade hub, saw its foreign trade growth rebound significantly in 2020, despite the economic challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic, with the second half of 2020 seeing a particularly strong jump in trade volumes, of 6% year-on-year. Dubai’s overall export values jumped 8% in 2020, on an annual basis.

Ahmed Bin Sulayem, Executive Chairman and Chief Executive Officer, DMCC, said: "In 2020, the outlook for global trade was bleak as the world sought to grapple with the impact of the pandemic. Today, the picture is much more positive, as evidenced by the findings of our latest Special Edition Future of Trade – 2021 report. But while global trade has shown its resilience, it is simultaneously in the midst of profound change. Technology, changing consumer behaviours, the drive to combat climate change, and geopolitics will all be key contributors to its reshaping in the years ahead. In this context, our research puts forward a number of tangible recommendations to governments and businesses seeking to navigate this new landscape and accelerate the recovery from the pandemic."

According to the research, the most transformative element of the global trade outlook is technology. Blockchain, decentralised finance (DeFi) and other new and disruptive technologies will further accelerate trade growth. For example, DeFi protocols have seen a considerable amount of funds invested. Since the start of 2021 alone, the total value locked into DeFi has tripled from approximately USD 20bn to USD 60bn. As digital infrastructures grow, they will continue to accelerate a ground-breaking shift in trade from the national to the global.

On the geopolitical front, fears of protectionist policies persist and are propelled by ongoing US-China trade tensions, rising economic nationalism, and the widening economic disparity between lower and middle-income economies. Alongside this, in a significant development for sustainability and global trade, the EU’s drive to harness a carbon pricing practice, under the anticipated Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM), or "Carbon Pricing," has been criticised as a form of protectionism, and as such, has the potential to further exacerbate existing geopolitical tensions. The findings suggest that while a "new age of protectionism" is a key risk in the wake of the pandemic and increasing discussions around US-China decoupling, outright protectionism will be kept at bay because it is costly, unpredictable, and impacts jobs. Instead, economic nationalism is more likely to occur.

While there were fears that the pandemic would see sustainability drop down the political and corporate agenda, that has not been the case. Rather, China, Japan, the US, South Korea and Canada are among nations to have announced more aggressive net zero targets. Further, companies and investors have ramped up their sustainability efforts and they are set to grow exponentially in the years ahead. For its part, CBAM has the potential to significantly disrupt international trade and raises questions around how to accurately measure emissions from complex supply chains. Once again, technology and artificial intelligence may provide at least part of the answer for companies and governments seeking to make accurate assessments relating to sustainability within their trade agendas.

During the launch event, global trade experts joined a panel discussion to share their views on the report. Panellists included Khatija Haque, Head of Research & Chief Economist, Emirates NBD; Roberta Piermartini, Chief of Trade Cost Analysis, World Trade Organisation; Yanislav Malahov, crypto and blockchain technology expert and Founder of Aeternity; and Marcus Treacher, Chief Executive Officer of CB Investment Growth Holdings and Board Member of Clear Bank and RTGS Global.

Meituan Launches Green Tech Fund, and Other Initiatives on World Environment Day

HONG KONG, June 5, 2021 — Meituan (HKG: 3690) (the "Company"), China’s leading e-commerce platform for services, today announced the launch of the Meituan Green Tech Fund and a series of green initiatives to celebrate World Environment Day.

Meituan is allocating an initial amount of RMB 500 million for the Meituan Green Tech Fund to drive low-carbon green development together with industry organizations, researchers and scientists. In response to China’s carbon neutral efforts as a whole, this particular initiative aims to support the research and application of green technologies through charitable causes.

The United Nations has designated June 5th as World Environment Day, with this year’s theme: "Reimagine.Recreate.Restore." While this day has been celebrated since 1972, recent challenges caused by climate change and COVID-19 have brought environmental issues into focus with a greater sense of urgency. Meituan’s efforts strongly align with the United Nations’ goal of ecosystem restoration, and this new fund furthers the Company’s existing sustainability commitments.

The fund will focus on two initiatives, the Meituan Green Tech Award and a demonstration project. The Meituan Green Tech Award will support emerging researchers’ and scientists’ studies on fundamental technologies that support China’s low-carbon and circular development strategy. The demonstration project will encourage innovative applications in eco-friendly packaging, recycling, and smart supply chain operations.

This year, the Meituan Green Tech Award plans to support 10 researchers who focus on green and low-carbon packaging, carbon capture and utilization, low-carbon transport and energy storage studies, allocating a one million RMB award to each of them. The demonstration project will consist of 10 entities that deploy innovative applications in food delivery green packaging, plastics recycling, and big data supply chain developments, with a one to three million RMB fund designated for each of them.

Applications for both the tech award and the demonstration project will officially open for registration in late August, 2021.

Meituan is also launching a "carbon account" for its delivery merchants and users. Starting June 9th, merchants will be able to log and track their environmental protection efforts in their merchant app, including data on their reduction of disposable products and use of recycled packaging. Users can now track their carbon footprints in the Meituan app, by monitoring their "no-disposable cutlery" order history and eco-friendly transportation mileage data, which is accumulated through shared Meituan Bikes rides.

Meituan launched the Blue Mountain Project (青山计划) in August 2017 to drive sustainability efforts in the food delivery industry, bringing together merchants and users to participate in environmental protection initiatives. As part of its green life cycle management philosophy, Meituan Bikes recycles disposed polyurethane tires from its shared bikes and electric mopeds, using the material to build running tracks and sports grounds for people in remote areas. As of today, Meituan has created 10 such sports grounds in provinces such as Sichuan and Guizhou, benefiting over 5,000 students and residents. The Company plans to donate an additional 10 sports grounds by 2022.

Aon’s New Vaccine Supply Chain Solution to Benefit Response Fund for the World Health Organization

Aon will donate all 2021 revenues from new solution that protects global COVID-19 vaccine shipments to the COVID-19 Solidarity Response Fund.

CHICAGO, May 25, 2021 — Aon plc (NYSE: AON), a leading global professional services firm providing a broad range of risk, retirement and health solutions, has announced it will donate 100 percent of all 2021 revenues earned from its new vaccine supply chain solution to the COVID-19 Solidarity Response Fund, powered by the WHO Foundation and the United Nations Foundation in support of the World Health Organization (WHO). Aon commits to donating a minimum of $100,000.

Delivered through broad industry collaboration, Aon’s recently launched solution provides supply chain protection for global COVID-19 vaccine shipments and is designed to help maximize the number of doses that are administered to the public. The solution provides transparent cargo insurance coverage for COVID-19 vaccines and combines sensor data and analytics to deliver timely payment for doses that fall outside of the agreed-upon temperature range while being transported or stored. Qualified parties in the vaccine supply chain are eligible, including pharmaceutical firms, government bodies, transportation and logistics companies, distributors, health systems, pharmacy chains and inoculation centers.

"As we continue to move toward the ‘New Better’ and have seen incredible progress in some areas when it comes to vaccine distribution, the COVID-19 pandemic is still affecting communities around the world in unprecedented ways and its impact will continue to reverberate for years to come," said Greg Case, CEO, Aon. "By benefitting the COVID-19 Solidarity Response Fund, our new collaborative solution is not only providing first-hand support in supply chain management, but also aiding other critical life-saving efforts of the WHO Foundation."

The COVID-19 Solidarity Response Fund for the WHO is the only way for individuals, corporations, foundations and other organizations around the world to directly support the work of the WHO and its partners to help countries prevent, detect and respond to the COVID-19 pandemic. As of May 2021, the fund has put more than $250 million in donations to work. Donations support the WHO’s efforts including suppressing worldwide transmission of the virus, reducing mortality, protecting the vulnerable and accelerating equitable access to new COVID-19 tools.

"Navigating vaccine distribution at a global scale is one of the most immediate and pressing hurdles facing our leaders today," said Paul Kim, Head of Strategy and Product Development, Commercial Risk Solutions at Aon. "It is an honor to support the WHO Foundation to maximize the impact of our efforts. We are proud to not only provide an innovative offering to help work toward equitable global distribution, but to also directly benefit a fund that is impacting communities around the world in the fight against COVID-19."

Contrast Security Joins Cloud Native Computing Foundation and Linux Foundation to Drive Security Best Practices Around Cloud Native Architectures and Open Source Software

Contrast furthers commitment to empower organizations to rapidly build and run scalable applications in modern, dynamic environments with security integrity

LOS ALTOS, Calif., May 19, 2021 — Contrast Security, a leader in modernizing application security, today announced that it has joined the Cloud Native Computing Foundation (CNCF) and Linux Foundation as a silver member, which brings together the world’s top developers, end-users, and vendors to enable cloud native architectures and open source technologies. CNCF serves as the vendor-neutral home for many of the fastest-growing open source projects, including Kubernetes, Prometheus, and Envoy. In becoming a member, Contrast aims to support and educate the industry on the increasing risks and benefits of cloud native architectures and open source software through active participation in the foundation’s events, projects, and community.

Adoption of third-party open source software (OSS) has increased significantly over the past several years. OSS refers to application components (e.g., frameworks and libraries) within the public domain that developers can use, modify, and share to help augment proprietary code developed in-house and to accelerate time to market. As a result, OSS has gained wide adoption and is used by the vast number of enterprises — embraced by major corporations, including Walmart, JPMorgan Chase, and even Microsoft. At the same time, Contrast continues to empower organizations to leverage OSS safely without the risks they bring: vulnerabilities inherited to enterprises’ software, targeted attacks against open source code, and intellectual property licensing risks.

Cloud native applications also offer various benefits to organizations over traditional applications running in the cloud. The value of cloud native approaches typically falls into two different areas: greater business agility and faster development cycles. As organizations seek to tap the advantages of cloud native, the adoption of cloud native components is rapidly growing. Forrester, for example, predicts that just a year from now, 30% of developers will regularly use cloud containers and 25% will use serverless computing. These numbers will likely only increase as the marketplace continues to rapidly evolve and enterprises frequently need to make high-impact changes to applications on a very short timeline. However, in order to realize the full benefits of cloud native applications, organizations must ensure they have the right security technology and processes in place.

"We are proud to announce that Contrast has joined as a member of the CNCF and Linux Foundation to help drive industry change," said Surag Patel, Chief Strategy Officer at Contrast Security. "Many of the core foundations of this community to accelerate digital transformation, such as APIs, Kubernetes, serverless functions, Cloud Native architecture, and open source code, bring along with them exponentially increasing risk. Contrast was founded to enable enterprises to leverage all of these modern approaches while eliminating the risk they bring without slowing down digital transformation. We will bring a unique understanding of the market along with a differentiated capability around security observability that we believe will benefit the community."

Contrast’s CNCF membership follows the recent publication of its 2021 State of Open-source Security Report that revealed that 38% of third-party libraries found in applications are active and only 31% of classes in active libraries are invoked. Traditional software composition analysis (SCA) approaches attempt to analyze all of the open source code contained in applications — which translates into a huge time and resource expenditure chasing vulnerabilities that pose no risk at all. Yet, for third-party code that is invoked, risk is inherent: The average age of a library is 2.6 years old, and applications contain an average of 34 CVEs.

The report also discovered that many applications contain high-risk licensing issues that may require the applications in question to be released as open source (e.g., 35% contain at least one copyleft license). CNCF members will benefit from these and other types of data insights that are possible as a result of the inside-out application security approach of the Contrast Application Security Platform.

"It is a pleasure to welcome Contrast as a CNCF member," said Priyanka Sharma, General Manager at CNCF. "Cloud native patterns require integrated security practices and a paradigm shift to protect applications closer to dynamic workloads from the traditional perimeter-based security approach. We look forward to Contrast’s contributions and run-time security expertise to help shape the future of cloud native security and secure open source software."

Contrast already supports a variety of CNCF projects including Buildpacks with automated configuration of Contrast’s security instrumentation technology into every workload image. Every workload is paired with application security insights, instilling security confidence at scale in highly distributed environments. As a CNCF member, Contrast will continue to collaborate with peers on best practices, work directly with project maintainers, and provide feedback to CNCF.

KuCoin Partners With Cashaa to Combat COVID-19 Crisis in India Through Distribution of Daily Supplies

VICTORIA, Seychelles, May 19, 2021 — KuCoin, an IDG-backed crypto exchange, announced today that it has partnered with Cashaa, a blockchain-based financial platform, to jointly initiate charity campaigns to help people cope with the increasingly severe challenges of COVID-19 in India.

Latest statistics show that India’s COVID-19 cases have surpassed 25 million as mutations spread across the globe. What makes things worse is that the virus crisis is pushing up the cost of living as the shortage of daily supplies has been seen in many Indian cities. As part of KuCoin’s charity initiative in India, the crypto platform has pledged ₹2 million worth of food and daily supplies, and these goods will be delivered to the families in need with the help of Unicas, the world’s first crypto bank powered by Cashaa.

The first batch of food and daily supplies including wheat, rice, dal and salt has started to be distributed to people in Jaipur, Delhi, and Patna earlier today, and more families will be covered in the following days. It is noticed that each ration kit will be able to feed a family of four for up to two weeks.

"As a global exchange, we pay close attention to the COVID-19 situation as it spreads across the world," said Johnny Lyu, CEO at KuCoin Global. "Knowing its outbreak in India and considering the daily nutritional needs are at the edge for millions of people during the quarantine, as the People’s Exchange, we are pleased to take our responsibility to help local people address these challenges brought by the COVID-19."

As the COVID-19 has continued to deteriorate in India since April, KuCoin launched a charity fund with an initial investment of ₹1 Crore on April 28, 2021. The fund is dedicated to assist local partners and NGOs in providing much-needed support to residents in those cities with insufficient resources to fight against the pandemic.

"Unicas started the initiative #NoOneSleepsHungry to address the root cause of hunger and that it does not become the reason for anyone to suffer amidst the ongoing COVID-19 crisis. With our distribution of 1,000 ration kits with essential food supply, the campaign has positively affected the lives of several people in Jaipur, however it’s not enough," said Dinesh Kukreja, CEO of Unicas. "We are grateful to join hands with KuCoin to facilitate the underprivileged and needy in these dire times and extend this initiative to two other cities and provide support to 2,000 families."

As one of the first crypto trading platforms to enter the Indian market, KuCoin is committed to supporting local blockchain startups, listing promising crypto gems, providing Indian Investors with safe and easy-to-use trading services, as well as contributing to the mass adoption of blockchain. It believes that the technology has the potential to facilitate the free flow of value, upholding the well-being of all people.

As the next step of its charity initiative in India, KuCoin has partnered with Adim Sanskruti, a Pune-based Non-Governmental Organization (NGO), to extend the daily supplies distribution to Pune, the second largest city in Maharashtra in a few days, and it is anticipated that another 750 families will be benefited.

Organizations increasingly demand IT products that are more sustainable. The challenge for most purchasers is to verify that sustainability claims made by the IT brands for their products actually are correct. With TCO Certified, independent verification is not optional, it is always included. Compliance with all criteria is independently verified throughout the life of the certificate ensuring that consumers and professional purchasers are given accurate, comparable information.

"Annually more than 20,000 hours are spent verifying products as well as the factories where they’re made according to the criteria in TCO Certified. We know that a mere self-declaration is not enough to drive change — product testing at independent test laboratories and factory inspections by independent auditors are critical," says Sören Enholm, CEO of TCO Development, the organization behind TCO Certified.

Hewlett Packard Enterprise is the first brand whose servers meet the tough criteria in TCO Certified for data center products.

"We expect more brands to follow. The interest in our data center product categories is high, both from the industry looking to apply for TCO Certified for their products, and from the purchasing community asking for products with independently verified sustainability claims," continues Sören Enholm.

"In our Product Finder, you can search for certified products and have access to data backing the sustainability of those products. Our new Product Watcher functions also make it easy for buyers to track sustainability measures and product categories of interest," says Sören Enholm.

Toward sustainable IT products

With over 25 years of experience, TCO Certified is the world-leading sustainability certification for IT products. Our comprehensive criteria are designed to drive social and environmental responsibility throughout the product life cycle. Covering 11 product categories including displays, computers and mobile devices, compliance is independently verified, both pre- and post-certification.
