The Indonesia’s Ministry of Communications and Informatics Raises Public Awareness on Internet Catfish Phenomenon

JAKARTA, Indonesia, March 7, 2022 — With the rising concerns on potential moral hazards from online catfish phenomenon, the Indonesian Ministry of Communications and Informatics (Kementerian Komunikasi dan Informatika), through the National Digital Literacy Movement Siberkreasi, increases initiatives to raise awareness of the Indonesian public through an online event called "Obral Obrol liTerasi Digital: Mengenal Fenomena Penipuan Catfishing" that was broadcasted live on Youtube and Facebook on February 24, 2022.

Notable guest speakers included Relationship Expert & Psychologist, Dian Wisnuwardhani; MAFINDOs Fact Checker, Bentang Febrylian; and Siberkreasi/ICT Watch’s Steering Committee, Donny B. U.

Catfishing Phenomenon

Catfishing is a term that is used to describe a scam which uses false online identity to deceive the victim. The fraudster usually uses unsolicited photographs and information of another person to create a believable online persona that might romantically charm the victims, only to eventually extorting them and leading the victim to suicide in extreme cases.

This catfishing phenomenon turns out to be a major discouraging factor when using dating apps. A study stated, 65% of a total 18,000 respondents in 27 countries (including Indonesia) were afraid being scammed on dating apps, and upsettingly, 15% of total respondents reported that they have already been scammed. Among the scammed, catfishing is the number one modus operandi with 51% of those who were targeted fell for it.

Internet makes it possible for anyone to create its own identity, so anyone can be any character that they want to be online. "Identity play becomes a form of satisfaction when perpetrators are being perceived as another person in people’s eyes. Unfortunately, this technology is also used to commit frauds," said Donny.

Catfish Characteristics

There are key characteristics that may be referred to identify an online catfish, namely: refusing to make video call, avoiding face-to-face meeting, and restricting communication only via chat and voice call. "Most likely, catfish perpetrators behave like that to protect their identities from being exposed. So, the victim will not have any clue on the actual face of the catfish perpetrators," said Bentang.

Furthermore, Dian views that catfishing phenomenon occurs when people are not comfortable for being themselves, thus the perpetrator cannot show their natural selves without any disguise. "From psychology standpoint, this is called identity confusion, so they are confused with themselves. If we use Facebook or Instagram, when we frequently took pictures by using filters rather than being natural, this shows that something is going on with the personality of such person," said Dian.

Currently, the Indonesia’s Ministry of Communications and Informatics through Siberkreasi continue to prepare various webinars and workshop events addressing digital literacy.

JD.com Among FORTUNE 2022 World’s Most Admired Companies with Outstanding Social Responsibility Score

BEIJING, Feb. 3, 2022 — JD.com is ranked on the FORTUNE 2022 World’s Most Admired Companies list at No. 6 in the Internet Services and Retailing Category. Other companies listed in the Top 8 industry ranking include Amazon, Alphabet, Xiaomi and more.

This is the second time JD.com was named in this list, following last year. To compile this list, FORTUNE collaborated with partner Korn Ferry to survey more than 3,700 executives, directors, and analysts to measure corporate reputation and performance. Nine criteria are examined ranging from long-term investment value, social responsibility, quality of products/services, innovation, global competitiveness and more.

JD.com tops the "social responsibility" score among Chinese companies on the industry ranking. The company also demonstrated outstanding performances in the dimensions of "use of corporate assets", "long-term investment value", and "quality of products/services".

In the continued fight against COVID-19, the company has been on the frontline to donate vital medical and food supplies and leverage its nationwide warehouse and transportation resources to support local communities. Meanwhile, JD’s commitments to green supply chain and a circular economy last year, given its large scale in operation, bore meaningful fruits by clean energy using, packages reduction, second-hand products recycling and more.

Since 2020, JD has been supporting rural China to achieve RMB 320 billion yuan($50 billion) industrial output under a rural revitalization program that aims to drive more than RMB 1 trillion yuan industrial output within three years.

By continuously improving supply chain efficiency, JD achieved an inventory turnover time of 30 days by the third quarter of 2021, a world-class level in managing a pool of over 10 million self-operated SKUs, and realized the less-than-one-hour last-mile delivery service in over 300 cities across China, providing end-to-end solutions for brands and partners, and thus offering a premium shopping experience to consumers in China.

Lately, the company is making innovative moves on its international expansion. In January 2022 alone, JD opened its first robotic retail shops in the Netherlands – an unprecedented omni-channel shopping format in the world –with an attempt to explore the future of retail. A week later on Jan 18th, the company announced a strategic cooperation with Shopify on an "accelerated channel" to help foreign brands and products sell in China and the other way around.

To date, JD’s global supply chain network has covered more than 220 countries and regions in the world, with its international logistics arm operating around 80 bonded and overseas warehouses and cargo flight routes between China and the US, UK and Thailand. Together with various shipping services by air, railway, sea and trucks as well as other cross-border services, overseas orders can be delivered from door-to-door as fast as 48 hours.

In recent years, JD.com has been transforming into a leading supply chain-based technology and service provider. The company’s cutting-edge retail infrastructure seeks to enable consumers to buy whatever they want, whenever and wherever they want it. As the company’s business has grown, it has opened up its capabilities across retail, logistics and technology, empowering partners as well as industry players beyond the JD ecosystem.

JD deems itself as "a new type of real economy enterprise" that possesses both digital and technological capabilities, and the DNA and features of a tangible business. Such a dual characteristic enables JD with the knowledge to understand the development of traditional enterprises in different industries and provide them with the technological support accordingly that best suits their need for digital transformation.

Under the Patronage of His Highness Sheikh Theyab bin Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Abu Dhabi Early Childhood Authority’s WED Movement Engages Global Experts to Drive Innovation, Excellence in Early Childhood Development

ABU DHABI, UAE, Aug. 17, 2021Abu Dhabi’s World Early Childhood Development Movement (WED Movement) has launched a new initiative bringing together global experts to develop innovative and actionable solutions advancing Abu Dhabi’s vision to be a leader in Early Childhood Development.

Cecilia Vaca Jones, Executive Director of the Bernard van Leer Foundation, and Chair of the BWG
Cecilia Vaca Jones, Executive Director of the Bernard van Leer Foundation, and Chair of the BWG

WED Movement was established earlier this year under the patronage of His Highness Sheikh Theyab bin Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Chairman of Abu Dhabi Crown Prince Court and Chairman of the Abu Dhabi Early Childhood Authority (ECA). Under ECA, WED Movement is harnessing the expertise of a multidisciplinary group of 21 early child development experts representing a mix of academics, healthcare practitioners, policy influencers, children’s media and entertainment specialists, global business leaders and technical consultants. The experts come from several world-renowned institutions such as UNICEF, World Bank, UNESCO and Harvard University, as well as a number of global companies in technology and entertainment.

Participants are working in one of three Breakthrough Working Groups (BWGs), each focused on a unique and important aspect of how children’s mental, physical and cognitive abilities develop in the earliest years of life, from pregnancy to 8 years old. The BWGs are focused on Emotional Wellbeing & Social Interaction, Tech Humanity for Children, and 21st Century Lifestyle.

To date the BWGs have held nearly 100 strategic planning sessions and met with more than 65 parents, children, teachers and ECD experts in the UAE as part of their work towards creation of a series of innovative solutions that promote the holistic healthy development of Abu Dhabi’s young children. These solutions will also help parents and caregivers address some of the most common challenges faced during the earliest years of child growth and development. Outcomes from these sessions include policy recommendations, creation of specific programs and initiatives, development of products, as well as guidelines to address the identified issues.

Team members are coordinating directly with a range of government and social service entities, including Abu Dhabi Department of Community Development, Abu Dhabi Department of Health, Abu Dhabi Department of Education and Knowledge and Zayed Higher Organization for People of Determination. They also have commissioned independent research on such issues as child screen time, technology use in the home, play time and social interaction.

WED Movement and the work of the BWGs reflects Abu Dhabi’s commitment to deliver on its vision to invest in breakthrough innovation in early childhood development with the goal of nurturing a generation of conscious youth who have the knowledge and skills to adapt to rapidly changing societal challenges and contribute to building a better society. The BWGs aim to play a significant role driving the level of innovation needed while helping establish Abu Dhabi as a global role model for and contributor to excellence in early childhood development.

The BWGs work under the guidance of Cecilia Vaca Jones, Executive Director of the Bernard van Leer Foundation, and Chair of the BWG, alongside His Excellency Omar Saif Ghobash, Assistant Minister for Cultural Affairs at the UAE Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation (MoFAIC), and Co-Chair of the BWG.

Chair Cecilia Vaca-Jones said: "This Breakthrough Working Group approach enables us to tap into a global collection of world-class early childhood development experts with a single mission and focus: helping Abu Dhabi create the best possible environment to give our children the opportunity in life each and every one deserves. And these new programs, policies and initiatives that we pioneer here at home can become models for early childhood development that are adopted in nations around the world."

The BWGs are currently researching and assessing issues as well as exploring potential solutions related to the following themes:

  • Emotional Wellbeing and Social Interaction: Creating an ecosystem that can help reduce emotional strains on children, parents and caregivers while promoting continuous interactions with children that help them establish important social interaction skills at early ages.
  • Tech Humanity for Children: Looking at how to ensure that children are ready for the rapidly growing level of technology in their lives and are well aware of and protected from risks in order to best reap the many benefits these new technologies offer.
  • 21st Century Lifestyle: Fostering an Abu Dhabi-wide environment that promotes a better lifestyle at home, in school and across the community and facilitates positive physical and mental health of children.

Co-Chair H.E. Omar Saif Ghobash said: "These themes represent both challenges and opportunities for fostering early childhood development not only in Abu Dhabi but across the UAE and worldwide. Through this team of experts and the BWG approach, we will look to generate recommended programs, policies and initiatives that can have a positive impact across the early childhood development ecosystem on behalf of our children, including parents and caregivers, academia, government policymakers, social support groups and the private sector."

Dr. Nikki Martyn, Program Head of Early Childhood Studies at the University of Guelph-Humber and a member of the one of the BWGs said: "Being a part of WED Movement is a truly unique opportunity to take the learnings and experiences of early childhood development experts from around the world and develop initiatives and recommendations that can quickly be put in place to directly benefit the children of Abu Dhabi. Over the longer term, we hope to see the outcomes of WED Movement work benefitting children around the world."

Experts call for increasing rural area digital connectivity to alleviate poverty

SINGAPORE, July 28, 2021 — To close the digital divide and drive economic recovery during the pandemic, cross sectors collaboration are needed to lower the costs of rural area connectivity and improve digital literacy. This was the crux of the presentations by experts at the a webinar on "Strategies for Addressing the Asia-Pacific Digital Divide – Increasing Connectivity to Drive Economic Recovery" organized by the Financial Times and Huawei on Thursday.

Experts call for increasing rural area digital connectivity to alleviate poverty
Experts call for increasing rural area digital connectivity to alleviate poverty

Asia Pacific is speeding up for digital transformation and underpinned by dynamic markets and young population. The significant rift of digital access yet hinder wider shares of digital benefits, which in turn leads to slower recovery from pandemic. ICT leverages fundamental ways to drive economic rebound.

The importance of digital inclusion is echoed by Yin Haitao, professor at Shanghai Jiao Tong University’, whose newly released report on using ICT solutions to promote economic development and alleviate poverty.

The report, named "Digital Involvement and Poverty Alleviation: A Huawei Approach," was co-authored by Yin and Chris Marquis, Professor at Samuel C. Johnson College of Business, Cornell University.

The domain of corporate sustainability has long faced the challenge of making projects of this nature financially viable. To reach underdeveloped areas and improve digital coverage, Huawei initiates RuralStar program together with local operators globally including in Thailand and Indonesia since 2017. This solution replaces traditional towers with simple poles, and enabling a shift from diesel generator power to solar power. By the end of 2020, the RuralStar had been implemented in over 60 countries, with 50 million people benefited from this initiative.

Apart from agreeing vendors like Huawei’s approach on digital infrastructure access, labor is another prior concern. Poon King Wang, Director of the Lee Kuan Yew Centre for Innovative Cities, Singapore University of Technology and Design (SUTD), calls for long-term strategies and sustained support to upskill people across generations and ensure wellbeing of workers in digital transformation.

Sofia Shakil, Director of the Economic Programs, Asia Foundation, addressed the negative impact of the pandemic on women unemployment and the urgency to invest in skills building.

In 2017, Huawei, the Bangladesh Government (ICT Division), and Robi Axiata jointly launched the Digital Training Bus project, to bring digital skills to women in the heart of rural Bangladesh. More than 60,000 women had received training till now, and 160,000 more will benefit from it by 2023.

To lessen the imminent labor deficit in APAC, 400,000 more are expected to be digitally upskilled in the next five years through Huawei educational flagship programs such as Seeds for the Future and ASEAN Academy, according to Michael MacDonald, Chief Digital Officer at Huawei Asia Pacific.

Departing from different fields, speakers share views of building ecosystem cohesively including government, industry and thought-leaderships from third party to drive digital inclusion. "Ultimately, we need to build up trust across the different stakeholders in the ecosystem", said Poon King Wang on sustaining the benefits of tech.
