University of Technology Sydney wins Australian Sustainability Award with world’s first 3D-printed air diffusion system

SYDNEY, April 11, 2023 /PRNewswire/ — Systems Reef 2 (SR2), a collaboration between UTS and BVN Architecture, reduces the carbon footprint of commercial buildings through energy-efficient design and materials.

UTS and BVN Architecture have won the Green Building Material/Product Award at the most recent Australian Sustainability Awards for their 3D-printed air diffusion system, designed to reduce the carbon footprint of commercial buildings.

Many buildings currently use traditional air distribution systems which have not seen significant innovations over the last one hundred years. These systems are not tailored to each space, and they cannot be reconfigured to adapt to the changing ways we work or live.

UTS and BVN found inspiration in nature as they redesigned air diffusion from the ground up. Eschewing traditional methods of design and manufacture, the team built a system that mimics the respiratory system of frogs; SR2 uses an aerodynamic design with fine pores to ‘mist’ cool air rather than dump it into one spot.

Informed by a circular economy approach, UTS and BVN chose recycled PETG plastic so that SR2 was fully recyclable at the end of its life.

“The building industry is one of the highest contributors to global waste, one of the biggest consumers of energy and materials and has some of the most significant contributions to CO2 emissions,” says Tim Schork, chief investigator and Adjunct Professor at the UTS School of Architecture.

UTS and BVN designed SR2 for the purpose of retrofitting existing building stock with outdated air distribution systems that use significant amounts of electricity.

“Compared to Australia, there are even more buildings globally whose air diffusion systems need to be renewed. It’d be great to see SR2 implemented in other parts of the world,” Tim says.

Now patented, SR2 is one step closer to market-readiness.

“SR2 can be installed in any office environment, but is not just for these spaces. It can be installed in supermarkets, hotels, commercial stores, and homes where there are many existing air duct systems that can be replaced,” Tim says.

The University of Technology Sydney is a leading university of technology, ranked 15th in the world and 2nd in Australia in the 2022 Times Higher Education Impact Rankings. For more information, visit uts.edu.au.

China “Internet+” Innovation and Entrepreneurship Competition Calls for College Students Worldwide

CHONGQING, China, April 8, 2023 /PRNewswire/ — The Championship of the 8th China International College Students’ “Internet+” Innovation and Entrepreneurship Competition (the “Competition”) will kick off on April 9 in Chongqing City, Southwest China. The Competition Championship and concurrent activities will be hosted by Chongqing University.

The Competition has been held for eight years since it was inaugurated in 2015, with the participation of nearly 39.83 million students. The number of participants continues to increase year after year.

As an essential starting point for deepening education of innovation and entrepreneurship, the Competition plays a vital role in college students’ overall development and industry-university-research integration.

The 8th Competition is a very good combination of education, science and technology, and talents. It is a powerful initiative to implement the latest deployment of China’s central government, gathering talents in an efficient way.

The first Competition, with the theme of “Realizing Dreams through ‘Internet+’ and Pursuing a Bright Future through Innovation and Entrepreneurship”, was organized by Jilin University in Northeast China in 2015. The Competition has three levels: school level, provincial level, and national level. The former Competitions consisted of projects of four categories: “Internet+” traditional industry, “Internet+” new business, “Internet+” public service, and “Internet+” technical support platform. In this year’s Competition, the projects have been broadened to New Engineering, New Medicine, New Agriculture, and New Liberal Arts.

With the first International Track launched in 2017, the Competition has attracted nearly 10,000 international startup projects from more than 120 countries and regions.

The track classification of “higher education, vocational education, and budding (middle school students)” which was added in the 5th Competition, continues, with the Youth Dream and industrial tracks included.

In the 6th Competition, the event was officially renamed China International College Students’ “Internet+” Innovation and Entrepreneurship Competition, with “Dare to differ, Dare to Win” as its theme. Since then, both the name and the theme have been kept in use up to date.

The Competition has attracted students from some of the world’s top 100 universities, with more focus on talent education and creativity since 2021. A new “Undergraduate Creativity Group”, a separate promotion channel, has been set up to ensure more in-depth participation of college students.

This year’s Competition attracted a record number of 4,554 colleges from 111 countries and regions. Compared with last year, both the number of overseas projects and the number of participants increased. Top universities such as Harvard, MIT, Oxford, Cambridge and Imperial College London have set up teams to sign up for the Competition.

Dream Weavers in the countryside: Lighting up Scientific Dreams for Children

BEIJING, April 7, 2023 /PRNewswire/ — A news report by China.org.cn on China’s rural education:

Trashcan drones, water rockets made out of plastic bottles, DIY “wandering balloons”… These are showcases of science projects completed at an elementary school in Gushi County, Henan Province.

The ingenious teacher who led students in these projects is Zhang Jiantao. What distinguishes him is that he teaches in a rural school where out of the some 1,400 student body, over 80% are children left behind by their parents who work away from home most of the time.

Rural schools usually lack the necessary wherewithal for science education, such as apparatuses for experiments due to limited budgets. To intrigue students about science, Mr. Zhang will collect “waste” on school grounds in his daily life — used ping pong balls, straws and so on — and save them as materials for possible science experiments in the future.

These science projects that reuse waste objects have made Mr. Zhang’s science class a place of fun and joy. Besides the science projects displayed at the beginning, there are other interesting demonstrations, such as an “air cannon” made using cartons and cans, and a “static octopus” that runs on charging by friction. Through these fun experiments, the teacher has imparted knowledge on students like the pattern of sound waves and Bernoulli’s principle.

Zhang Jiantao has gained many likes from netizens. But what touched people is not only Mr. Zhang’s intriguing way of teaching, but also how through his deeds, opened up a door to science for these rural left-behind children, igniting their science dream.

Statistics show that in 2021, there were over 11.99 million left-behind children who were attending compulsory education in rural areas. But the fact is, a rather huge gap still exists between rural and urban schools in education resources and facilities, with art and science education being even weaker links in rural institutions.

For three years, Zhang Jiantao has brought over 100 science projects to his students leveraging this waste-recycling model. This year, he plans on compiling a textbook for the school he works at tailored to the circumstances of rural students, so that more children in rural areas could taste the charm of science. For a science teacher, maybe some DIY science projects don’t seem that challenging, but what really makes Zhang stand out from the rest is his commitment to staying in the countryside and contributing his bit to overcoming challenges in rural education.

“Dream weavers” like Zhang Jiantao are not rare in rural China. Yang Yu, a rural schoolteacher in Luanping County, Hebei Province, the only music teacher in her school at that time, transformed each of her classes into an experience of emotions and scenarios. She planted the seeds of music in the hearts of the left-behind children, and even brought her students to perform nationally. Math teacher Wu Xianzhou from Xinzhou Town, Danzhou City in Hainan Province, self-taught computer-programming lessons so he could teach his students and enrich their extra-curriculum choices. Under his proposal, computer-programming for children have become a special course offered at his school.

Rural education largely relies on these ordinary people with extraordinary minds. Meanwhile, China is encouraging more and more “dream weavers” through measures like training programs and income enhancement, to help even more children pursue their dreams.
