Piaggio Fast Forward Develops New Sensor Technology for Consumer and Enterprise Robots and for Motorcycle and Scooter Safety (ARAS)
Piaggio Fast Forward Develops New Sensor Technology for Consumer and Enterprise Robots and for Motorcycle and Scooter Safety (ARAS)

Highlights:

  • Piaggio Fast Forward (PFF) reveals trailblazing sensor technology for consumer and business robots as well as motorcycles and scooters
  • Piaggio Group motorcycles and scooters featuring an innovative sensor technology package developed, built and supplied by PFF including 4D imaging radar provided by Vayyar expected to debut in 2022 with PFF robots launching in late 2021
  • Vayyar Imaging, the global leader in 4D imaging radar, supplying the RoC (Radar-on-Chip) for the sensor package developed, built and supplied by PFF for mass production in Advanced Rider Assistance Systems (ARAS) and robots

Piaggio Fast Forward (PFF), the Boston-based robotics company and a leader in smart following technology, has developed new sensor technology for implementation not only in consumer and business robots but also in scooters and motorcycles.

Founded in 2015 by the Piaggio Group, PFF has previously focused on advancing innovation in smart following technology and smart behavior implementation in robots and machines, but in a strategic decision last year, began developing a custom radar sensor module for use first in Piaggio Group motorcycles and scooters with the intention to provide the technology to other companies in the future.

PFF’s hardware-software modules offer uncompromising safety by providing robust monitoring in all environmental and lighting conditions. PFF awarded a supply contract for the modules’ Radar-on-Chip to Vayyar Imaging, marking the deployment of the industry’s first ever 4D imaging radar-based motorcycle safety platform. The complete sensor package is developed, built and supplied by PFF for mass production in Piaggio Group motorcycles’ Advanced Rider Assistance Systems (ARAS).

ARAS applications are on the front line of the battle to prevent collisions and protect motorcycle riders. ARAS technology meets the rigorous technological requirements of traditional driver assist functions, addressing additional motorcycle-specific challenges such as size constraints and seamless vehicle maneuverability at high-tilt angles.

The PFF modules use Vayyar’s mmWave 4D imaging Radar-on-Chip (RoC) sensor, enabling multiple ARAS functions such as Blind Spot Detection (BSD), Lane Change Assist (LCA) and Forward Collision Warning (FCW) with a single sensor supporting a range of over 100m, and an ultra-wide field-of-view. PFF robots incorporating the radar technology are expected to be  released at the end of 2021, with Piaggio Group motorcycle models equipped with the PFF sensor module launching in 2022.

"PFF is creating advanced technology products for robots and motorcycles that detect and measure objects in our surroundings to provide the information we need for mapping, object detection, and control, regardless of lighting, weather and other environmental factors. We have chosen to develop our sensing applications with Vayyar’s 4D imaging radar technology. We are excited to work with such a professional, passionate team, to develop innovative new solutions that provide our customers with a better product experience." Greg Lynn, CEO at Piaggio Fast Forward.

The Vayyar 4D imaging radar technology being used in both PFF robots and PFF sensing modules developed for the motorcycle industry supports a large Multiple Input Multiple Output (MIMO) array that enables ultra-high resolution point cloud imaging for holistic monitoring of a robot’s and a vehicle’s surroundings. This high-performance sensor incorporates sophisticated single-chip 4D imaging radar technology, featuring an ultra-wide field of view (both in azimuth and elevation) with no dead zones, detecting and tracking multiple targets. Its small form-factor is engineered to address the unique challenges of motorcycle and robotics design.

"We’re very excited to partner with PFF, who are at the forefront of sensor technology, both in terms of harmonization with rider experience on two- and three-wheeled products, as well as application in their innovative robots. Motorcycle riders are among the most vulnerable road users, and this is a big step forward in reducing their risk of collision," says Ilan Hayat, Director of Business Development at Vayyar Imaging. "Regardless of vehicle type, rider safety should not be compromised, and by partnering with PFF we are thrilled to deliver an automotive standard of safety to motorcycles", added Hayat.

jwplayer(‘myplayer1’).setup({file: ‘https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0wMgBoVjoIM’, image: ‘http://www.prnasia.com/video_capture/3458759_AE58759_1.jpg’, autostart:’false’, aspectratio: ’16:9′, stretching : ‘fill’, width: ‘600’, height: ‘338’});

Based on a unique architecture, the NU4000 is a 3D Vision and AI processor designed for use in smart devices that need to see and understand the world around them. Applications include Augmented and Virtual Reality, Robotics, Drones and Artificial Intelligence of Things (AIoT).

Fukushin Electrics’ POLCAR is the first and most advanced step into smart mobility systems, offering a safer and more secure electric cart experience. Built into the obstacle detection unit of the POLCAR, Inuitive’s NU4000 detects potential obstacles such as people, objects, gutters, etc. in advance. The cart then issues a sound and light alert to the driver, while automatically decelerating and stopping to prevent collision.

"Inuitive’s NU4000 combines 3D and AI, enabling Alps Alpine’s obstacle detection system to filter out irrelevant information while fulfilling its primary mission – preventing collisions," says Kenichi Kitatani, Power and Mobility Project Manager at Alps Alpine. "Until now the sole option was to separately use a 3D-only system that requires heavy processing to generate relevant information, or an AI-only system that detects many classes of objects. While high sensitivity results good in detection, it can also cause overload with hazards that are better ignored. The NU4000 offers the best of both worlds, in one compact unit."

"Having successfully completed a series of rigorous tests and checks to ensure compliance with the most stringent standards and regulatory requirements, our selection by Alps Alpine for this project is a strong validation of our technology," says Shlomo Gadot, founder and CEO of Inuitive. "We look forward to this being a catalyst for many more collaborations with integrators in Northeast Asia and beyond."

"The development of smarter user experiences depends on high-quality depth sensing, on-chip SLAM, computer vision and deep learning capabilities," says Rich Wawrzyniak Principal Market Analyst, ASIC & SoC at Semico Research Corp. "This is what makes the work that Inuitive is doing so exciting; they are facilitating the ongoing development of smart products. Embedded vision and AI are going to be pervasive functions in our society, and Inuitive is well positioned to aid companies wanting to add these capabilities to their products going forward."

ST Telemedia Global Data Centres collaborates with ABB for artificial intelligence energy optimisation pilot

Pilot to be carried out in two phases over 12 months as STT GDC seeks to innovate to reach its sustainability goals

SINGAPORE, July 15, 2021ST Telemedia Global Data Centres (STT GDC), one of the fastest growing global data centre operators headquartered in Singapore, announced today that it is collaborating with ABB, a technology leader driving digital transformation across industries, to conduct an artificial intelligence (AI) energy optimisation pilot in Singapore. The objective of the pilot is to leverage AI and machine learning (ML) technology and advanced analytics to optimise energy use within a data centre and reduce a facility’s overall carbon footprint.

"STT GDC is excited to collaborate with ABB on this pilot as we transition our data centres to be net carbon-neutral by 2030," said Daniel Pointon, Group Chief Technology Officer, ST Telemedia Global Data Centres. "Our group’s AI roadmap will take a big leap forward with this pilot program and focus on optimising our data centre’s energy utilisation. During the review of the pilot results, we will also assess future AI-based applications such as predictive maintenance, capacity management, security analytics and other business processes in our considerations."

The pilot will span two phases – an initial data exploration, modelling and validation phase, followed by deployment of AI control logic in a live data centre environment. The pilot aims to achieve at least 10 percent reduction in energy usage by the cooling systems, which contributes most to the consumption of electrical power in a data centre after our customer’s IT equipment. Optimising the cooling efficiency will in turn improve power usage effectiveness (PUE) and reduce the carbon footprint, with an estimated reduction of 1,100 tons of carbon in the atmosphere for every 10MW of IT load utilised, which is equivalent to saving approximately 18,000 trees.

Going further than previous AI research work constrained to white-space of data centres, STT GDC’s pilot is taking a holistic approach and developing AI neural-network models for the entire DC cooling plant including the upstream chiller and distribution systems. The AI project is also unlocking new opportunities for efficiency improvement at a granular level within the data centre. With the ability to glean AI-generated insights, leveraging cutting-edge ABB Ability™ Genix for industrial analytics and AI, STT GDC can effectively track and analyse the wealth of data generated by monitoring systems in the data centre, and better facilitate dynamic cooling optimisation to reap the desired outcomes.

"We look forward to supporting the STT GDC team in their efforts to drive digitalisation and energy efficiencies," said Madhav Kalia, Global Head of Data Center Automation at ABB. "At ABB, we have a strong track record of supporting data centre operators with our best-in-class technology solutions. We are committed to exploring the synergies between our offerings with STT GDC as it embarks on an ambitious plan."

As one of the fastest growing operators, STT GDC is committed to pushing the boundaries in innovation and setting new benchmarks for the wider industry. The vast amount of data that can be captured and harnessed in a live data centre environment makes for a strong base for AI applications which can also be applied to other facets including capacity planning, risk mitigation and predictive maintenance. This, and other research and development initiatives around alternative energy, water efficiency, construction technology and IT, are being carried out by STT GDC’s research and development team based in Singapore.

"In view of growing data demands from end users and emerging business applications that require increasingly higher computing power, the resources that data centres consume have the potential to increase if not appropriately addressed. As a long-term participant in the data centre industry, players like STT GDC must take the lead, maintain operational excellence, and fully align with national and international climate change agendas such as the recently announced Singapore Green Plan 2030. We remain committed to our principles for long-term value creation and goal of contributing towards a more sustainable global economy," Pointon added.

This initiative by STT GDC comes in the wake of its pledge to achieve carbon-neutral data centre operations by 2030 with energy efficiency and the use of renewable energy being key to the Group’s sustainability ambitions. The AI project will be jointly developed by STT GDC and ABB. It will be an on-premise solution that will tightly integrate to the existing ABB Ability™ Data Center Automation system on site, which provides comprehensive monitoring and control of the entire data centre infrastructure.
