‘The Three-body Problem’ × Netflix: Beyond sci-fi and nations

BEIJING, Sept. 16, 2020 — A news report by China.org.cn on the transnational adaption of "The Three-body Problem":

On September 1st, Netflix, the world’s leading streaming service, announced plans to bring an acclaimed Chinese sci-fi trilogy "The Three-body Problem" to the small screen. D.B. Weiss and David Benioff, the "Game of Thrones" showrunners will tackle this adaptation. Liu Cixin, author of the trilogy, and Ken Liu, the English translator, will serve as consulting producers.

"The Three-body Problem" is the first Asian novel to win a Hugo Award for Best Novel. With millions of fans around the world, there is much anticipation for a TV adaptation.

However, since Netflix announced its plan, concern has outweighed excitement. Given the controversial ending to "Game of Thrones," many are skeptical of Benioff and Weiss’s ability for adaptation. Meanwhile, as the books delve deep into Chinese culture and history, some readers outside of China are worried that Netflix might "westernize" the story.

The trilogy tells the clash between humans and aliens from Trisolaris, a doomed planet with three suns, orbiting in an unstable state of three-body problem in classical mechanics. After intercepting signals from Earth, the aliens paralyze Earth’s advancement of science and begin their invasion toward Earth. In response, humans empower Wallfacers to fight against the aliens. Liu Cixin said that he set out to tell a story that "transcends time and the confines of nations, cultures and races; one that compels us to consider the fate of humankind as a whole."

In the novel, all humans share the challenge for their fate, and in reality, such conundrum remains. Today, our Trisolaris threat is the COVID-19 pandemic; in the future, it could take other forms. What will remain constant is that humanity share weal and woe; in no way could mankind survive and prosper via confrontation and separation.

Facing common challenges, all humans should stand together. As for where the benefits coincide, people should all the more collaborate for win-win outcomes.

Despite the many uncertainties of the Netflix adaptation, the company is better-suited compared to its fledgling Chinese counterparts. For example, it has a good track record of adapting source material from Japan and South Korea. The transnational adaption of "The Three-body Problem" is a marriage between superb storytelling and superior producing techniques. Literary masterpieces are the common treasure for all humanity, and great international adaptation should be encouraged, so as to make them accessible for more people around the world.

The real message here goes beyond the trilogy or literature. Cooperation should neither be restricted within national borders, nor politicized. All countries should seek common development, and secure a better future for mankind.

LG Invites Musical Talent Around the World to Create Empowering, Dynamic Music with H.E.R.

SEOUL, South Korea, Aug. 21, 2020 — LG Electronics (LG) is hosting a global virtual music contest with Grammy Award-winning musician H.E.R. as part of its Life’s Good campaign for supporting and encouraging young voices.

As part of LG’s global campaign launched earlier this month, the Life’s Good Music Project invites young talent from around the world to complete a song from 16 vocal bars written and composed by H.E.R. "Life’s good even with all my doubts," H.E.R. sings, "with faith I know, we’ll get there." Three musicians behind the very best submissions will be selected to collaborate on a final song with H.E.R. through virtual coaching sessions. The result will be released to the public later this year.

LG recognizes music’s power in bringing people together, and the Life’s Good Music Project is set to be a new and meaningful attempt to create a collaborative piece and rehearse for it together while physically apart. No matter the distance, the connection between musicians and their audience will become even stronger through such inspiring projects, as music will hold greater meaning by featuring the vibrant voices, energy, and creativity of the young people around the world.

H.E.R. voiced the significance of young people coming together – not only in sound but also in voice, sentiment, and spirit – for the love of music no matter the circumstances. "[The Life’s Good Music Project] is a good opportunity for young creatives," H.E.R. remarked. "I was once somebody who wanted my art to be heard, so…it’s really cool for me to even start or initiate a contest or something that just challenges people. Everybody wants to be heard. Everybody wants their art to be noticed and to be heard, so I think this is the perfect opportunity for that…I just love what life’s good is all about. It’s a really positive message, and it’s very inclusive."

The Life’s Good Music Project is another step in LG’s journey to reclaim and rediscover what truly makes life good. First sparking the conversation with young people around what makes life good at the start of this month, LG followed up by releasing a Life’s Good movie featuring and directed by a group of inspired teen creators. The Life’s Good campaign aims to empower today’s youth to raise their voices and inspire meaningful actions to build a better tomorrow for everybody.

"By bringing together aspiring musicians from around the world, the Life’s Good Music Project amplifies the creative power of the younger generation and their resilience in turbulent times," said Kim Jin-hong, head of LG’s Global Marketing Center. "We look forward to hearing everyone’s compositions and performances that capture this spirit."

Submissions for LG’s Life’s Good Music Project can be made by posting on Instagram or YouTube with the hashtag isGoodMusic_LG until Sept. 17. More information can be found on the LG Global YouTube channel (www.youtube.com/GlobalLG) and Instagram (www.instagram.com/lg_global).

Luxury brands embrace social media marketing in China

BEIJING, Aug. 20, 2020 — A news report by China.org.cn on China’s luxury goods market:

On August 6, the well-known luxury brand Louis Vuitton held a fashion show in Shanghai — its first since the coronavirus outbreak. Livestreamed across multiple social media platforms such as Douyin, the Chinese version of TikTok; Weibo, China’s Twitter; and a WeChat mini program, the show drew a sizeable audience, garnering more than 50 million views on Weibo alone.

The show’s popularity reflects the impressive performance of the Chinese luxury goods market. In the face of the ongoing COVID-19 crisis, the global luxury goods market is expected to shrink dramatically, while sales of many brands in Europe and America have plummeted. However, assessments of the China’s market are far rosier. The financial reports of groups such as LVMH and Kering all show that sales in China were significantly higher than those in other regions in the second quarter of 2020.

But it is not only in the luxury goods sector; the Chinese consumer market as a whole looks promising. The financial reports of many American companies, including Tesla and Nike, reveal that the Chinese market has helped offset the damage from tumbling sales in other regions. During this tough period, China has become a lucrative market for many international companies.

The reasons behind this are that China has contained the epidemic and recovered rapidly. China is regarded as one of the world’s largest and fastest growing consumer markets. Over the past few years, household wealth in the country has risen, the middle class continues to grow, and the spending power of consumers in second-, third- and fourth-tier cities has also increased significantly; millennials and Generation Z hold enormous influence in the market with their unique consumption habits; and online shopping and multi-channel retail is shaping consumption in China in new ways. One report even predicts that China will contribute around half of all global luxury consumption by 2025, which demonstrates the country’s vast consumer market and huge potential.

It is worth noting that due to the effect of COVID-19 on travel, many of the world’s top luxury companies have responded by promoting their brands on Chinese social media platforms such as Douyin and "Little Red Book". They have posted and livestreamed frequently to attract more Chinese consumers. In fact, the pandemic has acted more like a catalyst: social networking, which promotes individuality and interconnectivity, has crept into traditional brand promotion and sales, forming a new business model and generating returns. In the future, this model will become the new normal, helping to further unleash consumption potential and stimulate economic growth.

Cinemas reopen across China after unprecedented closure

BEIJING, July 30, 2020 — A news report by China.org.cn on the reopening of China’s cinemas:

Since last week, cinemas in low-risk regions of China have reopened for business. This means that after six months in the dark, the country’s movie theaters can finally accept customers again, and China’s film market can begin where it left off.

According to the pandemic control requirements, movie theaters are now required to keep attendance under 30% capacity for each screening and strictly disinfect venues every day. Moviegoers must undergo temperature checks prior to admission, should sit in non-adjacent seats, and need to wear face masks when watching films. Currently, theaters are mainly screening hit domestic and foreign films, such as “The Wandering Earth”, “Coco” and “Zootopia.” Several new domestic movies are also set for release in the coming months.

On the first day of reopening, cinemas in cities such as Nanjing, Chengdu and Hangzhou quickly sold out. With the Shanghai International Film Festival opening on July 25 and screening more than 300 films, tickets for the event also sold out almost entirely in three minutes. In total, over 100,000 tickets were sold within just 10 minutes of presales being launched.

This year, the COVID-19 pandemic has resulted in an unprecedented shutdown of the global movie industry. China’s film market has also encountered huge difficulties. By March this year, more than 2,000 cinema enterprises had closed permanently across the country, with estimated losses in box office revenue for the year amounting to more than 30 billion yuan (US$4.27 billion).

China is the world’s second largest film market. During the past two decades, with increases in economic development and consumption, and through the opening-up of markets and deepening reforms, the Chinese film market has maintained rapid growth in terms of market scale and production. In 2019, the country had nearly 70,000 screens, while the annual box office gross peaked as high as 64.27 billion yuan (US$9.17 billion). This shows that China’s film market has robust demand and potential, which will be unleashed gradually over time.

Although there are still many complex and difficult problems facing cinemas as they resume operations, the reopening is significant. It conveys positive signals that China’s economy is starting to recover from the pandemic, and social life is beginning to get back on track. For the global film market, the reopening of Chinese cinemas is also good news. Hopefully, it won’t be long before China’s film market resumes to its usual prosperity.
