Xinhua Silk Road: Annual report on image of Suzhou city released to better tell Suzhou stories during 2021 AI Expo Thu.

BEIJING, Sept. 18, 2021 — To better tell stories of Suzhou, an east China-located city known for its classic Chinese gardens, an annual report on image of Suzhou city in global cyberspace (2020-2021) came to the public during the 2021 Global AI Product & Application Expo (2021 AI Expo) on Thursday.

The report was released by the Jiangsu Center of Xinhua-run China Economic Information Service (CEIS) on the expo’s future of smart media-themed sub-forum. It probes into the characteristics, effectiveness and shortcomings of Suzhou’s city image building via internet channels in the past year.

Chen Xixi, head of Jiangsu Center of CEIS releases the annual report on Thursday.
Chen Xixi, head of Jiangsu Center of CEIS releases the annual report on Thursday.

Suzhou, as one of the major cities in the Yangtze River Delta, boasts a unique city image thanks to its world-class traditional culture and rich aquatic resources, complete and diversified manufacturing industry chain, and advantages in piloting preferential and opening-up policies by national level local economic platforms, according to the report.

Different from other Chinese cities, Suzhou appeared in reports by global media with four typical characteristics.

For instance, the city was usually reported along with such hot words as the "digital city", "ancient Chinese gardens", and words related to urban construction, culture, and tourism of Suzhou.

Moreover, Suzhou mainly appeared in reports by global mainstream media, which are mostly neutral in stance, in topics regarding its ecological environment, science and technology progresses, and development of emerging industries.

Furthermore, the city caught more attention from traditional media such as magazines, news agencies and commercial news websites and new media as compared with social media where reports about Suzhou are relatively scarce.

YouTube turned out a more interactive and influential platform for the city to communicate with the world as it is easy for influencer campaigns to produce widely-focused livestreaming shows about Suzhou, and the audiovisual language and topics concerned are easy to understand and closer to daily life.

All of these resulted from Suzhou’s continuous efforts in city image building in recent years, which highlighted its international communication with more cultural factors and established an all-round and multidimentional communication mode.

To better tell Suzhou stories, the report suggests the city deepening cognition of its city image and exploring more value of its connotation.

Slovenia: Europe’s Most Exciting New Culinary Capital

As the new video showcases, the unique advantage of Slovenian chefs is their privileged access to local ingredients. Slovenian culinary philosophy is based on the principle ‘from the garden to table’ and this is reflected in the close relationships between chefs and local producers, as well as the deep connections between Slovenian landscapes and traditional culinary experiences.

A unique insight into Slovenian gastronomy

Through the video, viewers will get to know the character and life of all six owners of a coveted Michelin star (Hiša Franko, two Michelin star Restaurant,  Hiša Denk, Atelje Restaurant, Vila Podvin, Dam Restaurant and Gostilna pri Lojzetu, all one Michelin star Restaurants), and explore how their relationships with local producers help define and inspire their world class culinary creations. Chefs Ana Roš, Gregor Vračko, Jorg Zupan, Uroš Štefelin, Uroš Fakuč and Tomaž Kavčič are all presented in the video with the opportunity for viewers to share their vision, dedicated work, passion and love for food and the environment.

Of course, no video about Slovenia would be complete without a look at the unspoiled nature and environment that helps create such a variety of unique local ingredients. It also includes a look at Slovenia’s award-winning winemakers, who are now being recognised by experts such as Decanter magazine as some of the best in the world.

The video was created in collaboration with the Slovenian Tourist Board with renowned National Geographic photographer and director Ciril Jazbec, internationally renowned director of photography Sven Pepeonik and food stylist Gruša Zorn.

China Matters tells the story of Ms. Pan and her Mountaintop Guesthouse

BEIJING, Dec. 29, 2020 — As Pan Qingqing sips on a traditional Chinese tea, she glances out the window of her mountaintop guesthouse. The view is splendid with billowing clouds and valleys, and this is swiftly followed by laughter and loud chatter in the guesthouse where she is right in the middle of a jovial conversation with her guests who have made the trip to Xiangjian village in the southern city of Hangzhou.

jwplayer.key=”3Fznr2BGJZtpwZmA+81lm048ks6+0NjLXyDdsO2YkfE=”

jwplayer(‘myplayer1’).setup({file: ‘https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=c-e-VA6mT1k’, image: ‘http://www.prnasia.com/video_capture/3234410_AE34410_1.jpg’, autostart:’false’, aspectratio: ’16:9′, stretching : ‘fill’, width: ‘600’, height: ‘338’});

The 44-year-old is one of many in Lin’an District to have built guesthouses to attract more visitors from home and abroad. For her, this is an opportunity to bring changes to her hometown. And her plans have been supported by the Hangzhou government.

The key to this change has been to combine the local surroundings with the arts to create something fresh where you wouldn’t expect it. And the guesthouses like Ms. Pan’s brings the two together.

Bigger than life-size installations of bamboo art now decorate the halls. When guests sit down for an afternoon tea and food, cups and cutlery sets made from local bamboo wood don the tables. Ms. Pan has been inviting artistic to come and showcase their mastery.

However, it wasn’t all plain sailing at the start. After studying in France, she finally chose to come back to Lin’an. And even though she left all those years ago as a child, no one could deny how special the place was to her.

But as things would have it, Ms. Pan’s father, an experienced tourism operator, opposed the guesthouse plans. He sighted poor accessibility, small population, and an underdeveloped economy in the area as potential pitfalls. Nevertheless, she saw differently. She wasn’t deterred. She believed in the changes her guesthouse would bring.

And now, she is hosting variety of events throughout the year. Recently, she launched a bamboo art exhibition. The bamboo artist was able to teach local villagers how to weave locally-sourced bamboo artworks. Just recently as October, at the tail-end of local rice harvest season, she gathered young agricultural entrepreneurs to taste the new rice and exchange their products to promoting their hometowns.

So, Xiangjian village is just the tip of the iceberg. It represents this innovative take on how to build tourism in rural Hangzhou. In this video, British host Josh went to visit the guesthouse and see the transformation of villages in Hangzhou through nature and modern arts. The video was filmed and produced by China Matters.

Palace Museum at 600: Old palace, new vitality

BEIJING, Oct. 16, 2020 — A news report by China.org.cn on the 600th year of the Palace Museum:

This year marks the 600th birthday of the Forbidden City, a magnificent and majestic Chinese palace.

As the most important activity in a series of commemorative events, an exhibition titled "Everlasting Splendor: Six Centuries at the Forbidden City" is being held at the Palace Museum in Beijing. With more than 450 cultural relics and historical photos on show, the exhibition brings history to life, and allows visitors to better appreciate the cultural charm of the 600-year-old palace.

The Forbidden City was China’s imperial palace during the Ming (1368-1644) and Qing (1644-1911) dynasties. It was completed in 1420 and a total of 24 emperors lived and worked in the compound.

In many people’s eyes, the Forbidden City is both beautiful and mysterious. Its beauty lies in the palace complex being an extremely precious and magnificent artwork. Boasting more than 70 palaces of various sizes and over 9,000 rooms, the Forbidden City is one of the largest and most complete existing wooden structures anywhere in the world. A masterpiece of ancient architecture, the compound features a symmetrical layout, various glazed roof tiles, exquisite corner towers as well as bright and airy courtyards.

The Forbidden City is mysterious, because ancient Chinese philosophies were integrated into its design and construction, including harmony between human and nature, the Five Elements, Yin and Yang, as well as the Eight Trigrams. Previously off-grounds to all but the imperial family, the palace has an air of dignity which has deepened the mystery surrounding it.

However, the sense of mystery has gradually faded since the Forbidden City was transformed into the Palace Museum in 1925, 13 years after the last emperor abdicated.

The Palace Museum is now a world-renowned museum which houses more than 1.8 million artifacts. It is also the world’s most visited museum, receiving over 19.3 million visitors in 2019. In recent years, it has opened a coffee shop named the Corner Tower Cafe, attracting visitors to enjoy drinks named and packaged with "imperial" elements. Creative products inspired by aspects of the museum, such as cosmetics and folding fans, have gone on sale via e-commerce platforms. Court robes in the museum’s collection have appeared in mobile games. "Snowy scenes at the Palace Museum," "Cats living in the Palace Museum," and the names of TV shows featuring the museum are all popular search terms online. The Palace Museum has become a real "online celebrity" on the Chinese internet.

Many foreigners still refer to the Chinese palace as "the Forbidden City." In fact, that name is used less and less in China.

The Forbidden City is now known as the Palace Museum, or "Gugong" in Chinese. "Gu" means "old" or "in the past." Bearing witness to China’s history, the Palace Museum has to some extent shaped the mental world of the Chinese people. But nowadays, it has become a brand-new cultural symbol. Open and vigorous, the palace inspires more people to understand the Chinese nation from a new perspective and cherish the common treasures of mankind.
