The discussions – ranging from the usefulness of ancient wisdom in a modern context to digital archaeology and inclusive archaeology – reflected the ambition of the summit. With its four broad themes of identity, ruinscapes, resilience and accessibility, the summit generated interdisciplinary conversations that moved beyond the specialist mindset in order to promote archaeology to wider audiences.

Abdulrahman Alsuhaibani, Executive Director of Archaeology, Conservation and Collections at the Royal Commission for AlUla (RCU), said: “This summit was exceptional. It was unique. We discussed topics vital to the future of archaeology with a broader perspective – and I hope we continue the discussion.”

Organised by RCU, the summit included 327 attendees from 39 countries, 80+ speakers, 50 youth delegates participating in the Future Forum, representation from 167 institutions including 65 universities, and a gender ratio of  47% female to 53% male.

The summit’s final day featured the announcement of a new prize for young archaeologists. The AlUla World Archaeology Summit Award of Excellence is to be awarded at future summits and will promote the science of archaeology, Dr Alsuhaibani said. More details will be announced later.

The summit showcased AlUla’s position as a hub of archaeological activity. RCU is sponsoring one of the world’s largest archaeological research programmes across AlUla and Khaybar, with 12 current surveys, excavations and specialist projects. Rich cultural landscapes are being revealed, including funerary avenues, mustatils, ancient cities, inscriptions in 10 languages, rock art and complex agricultural practices. AlUla is the site of Hegra, which in 2008 was inscribed as Saudi Arabia’s first UNESCO World Heritage Site.

The summit offered delegates a platform for advancing archaeology and cultural heritage management in their interface with other disciplines. This gathering of leaders from academia, government, non-government organisations, industry, and young people representing the next generation of archaeologists was created to not only enrich the archaeological community and help protect shared history but also to open up a larger reflection of what and how archaeology, and more broadly cultural heritage, can contribute to transformational changes in society.

The summit’s Future Forum provided a platform for young people to engage in meaningful dialogue and debate about the future of archaeology. It offered a space for them to develop their own perspectives and ideas and contribute to the conversation in fundamental ways.

Hainan: From a southern island to a Free Trade Port

BEIJING , April 13, 2023 /PRNewswire/ — A news report from China.org.cn on Hainan Free Trade Port:

“The spring breeze brushes through Hainan Island.” “Flowers and fruits blossom everywhere”… These refreshing lyrics from the iconic song Please Come to the Ends of the Earth were sung at the 1984 Spring Festival Gala which put Hainan on the radar for the Chinese people. Back then, “spring all year round” and “fragrant flowers and sweet fruits” were the greatest merits of this island. Four years later, Hainan Province was founded and designated as a special economic zone. That’s when the change really started to happen.

2023 marks the 35th year since the establishment of the Hainan Special Economic Zone. What was previously considered “the ends of the earth” to the Chinese people is now a holiday resort destination and home to the world’s largest single duty-free complex and the only circular high-speed railway. In addition, “globalization” has also become a hallmark of Hainan: the Boao Forum for Asia is a consensus building institution permanently based in Hainan that drives cooperation and development for Asia and the world. The China International Consumer Products Expo, which has been held for three years consecutively, provides a platform for countries to share business opportunities in the Chinese market.

2023 also marks five years since the building of a free trade port with Chinese characteristics in Hainan. Since the Law of the People’s Republic of China on the Hainan Free Trade Port came into effect, the combined effect of China’s free trade port policy and the RCEP saw the piloting of CPTPP, DEPA and other international high standard economic and trade rules, culminating in a series of legal, policy and institutional measures to facilitate the port’s full opening up to the international market. At present, three “zero tariff” lists, and the 15% income tax incentives for corporations and individuals are among the over 180 policy instruments that have been rolled out in Hainan. The special administrative measures, or “negative list” for foreign investment has also been slimmed down to 27 items, the shortest in the country.

Hainan sent delegations to visit Japan, Germany, Southeast Asia and other regions to promote investment and held foreign investment symposiums for enterprises — these are some of Hainan’s practical and earnest efforts towards seeking openness and win-win cooperation.

That’s why well-known jewelry brand De Beers Forevermark only took one month to settle in Hainan. Top-tier destination for auctions and private sales Sothetby’s, United States’ General Electric, France’s Kering Group, Singapore’s leading medical group Raffles, Japan’s Lawson and other companies have also poured investment into Hainan. Furthermore, entrepreneurs from Italy, Ghana and other countries have also selected Hainan as their market-entry destination into China.

Currently, Hainan free trade port is preparing for official independent customs operations in 2025, meaning Hainan will turn into a region inside the national border but outside the customs territory of China, which will further highlight connectivity with the world and implement more liberal trade and investment policies.

For 35 years, China has been exploring and innovating in Hainan, becoming more and more open in the process. Welcome to Hainan, where the ocean is pristine and the sand is white, to take advantage of free trade and to pursue a win-win-win future for all.

China Matters’ Feature: How was an ancient Chinese village transformed by art?

BEIJING, Nov. 8, 2022 /PRNewswire/ — Gejia village, located in a remote mountainous area of Ningbo, east China’s Zhejiang Province, has a history of more than 1,300 years. This place was once a small, underdeveloped village largely devoid of any industry.

The collective income of Gejia village was a dismal 120,000 yuan back in 2019, but rose to more than 500,000 yuan in 2021. What made a village change in just three years?

Professor Cong Zhiqiang from Renmin University of China (RUC) is the man behind this tremendous change. In 2019, the local government launched a campaign called “rural revitalization through art,” aiming to boost the local economy by developing art-related industries. As a professor at the School of Artsat RUC, Cong Zhiqiang was invited to instruct this campaign.

However, the idea of a rural Chinese village embracing the world of art seemed a bit far-fetched. The locals didn’t accept the idea at first. They saw art as neither meaningful nor lucrative. So Professor Cong stayed in Gejia village for weeks, working and communicating with the locals.

Finally, he found a new way to help the villagers make the best use of art – keeping costs low, developing their own skills, and utilizing local materials. With the support of the local government, Cong not only helped villagers transform abandoned buildings and public spaces, he also exposed locals to business opportunities.

To find out how locals’ lives are changed by the campaign, Italian host Rachele Longhi travels to Gejia village. “The entire village is filled with breath-taking scenery,”said Longhi. She met with different villagers that found their new goals towards art: the wooden roses workshop owner; Yuan Xiaoxian,a housewife-turned handmade dolls shop owner, and the campaign initiator Professor Cong.

“They are more open-minded, inclusive, and more willing to share with others,”Cong said. “This is the power of art.”

With the encouragement from the local government and Professor Cong, villagers in Gejia have begun to embrace new ideas and changes, and are filled with excitement for what’s to come in the future. The artistic village now boasts more than 40 art sharing spaces built by the locals, attracting over 30,000 visitors and generating over five million yuan in tourism income in 2021. What’s more, the success of “rural revitalization through art” in Gejia has inspired other Chinese villages and motivated residents to learn from their experiences.

It has been held for six consecutive sessions since 2016 and has become an important annual event to promote Beijing’s culture and tourism resources. Each event is an organic combination of online and offline events to showcase all that Beijing has to offer in the best way possible. For example, “Great Wall Heroes” leveraged the China-US Year of Tourism to promote key cultural heritage belts like the Great Wall and the Grand Canal, as well as international events like the 2019 Beijing Horticultural Expo.

The tourism industry has been heavily impacted by the Covid-19 pandemic since 2020, and the “Great Wall Heroes” global promotional campaign has adapted in response. Since the pandemic, influential foreign experts with long-term experience in Beijing’s cultural tourism industry have been invited to talk about the city from an international perspective. By leveraging the industry influence of foreign celebrities, the campaign aims to promote Beijing’s international image as an inbound tourism destination and stimulate cultural tourism exchanges and cooperation.

In 2020, the “Great Wall Hero 2020—Visit Beijing Again” global promotional event was held at Guancheng Square at Badaling Great Wall Scenic Spot. The event was combined with the “Beijing Great Wall Cultural Festival” to promote five Great Wall Cultural Tourism Routes. In a popular video, 20 foreign influencers dressed in Han-style costumes toured the Great Wall at night. The video strengthened cultural exchanges between China and other countries around the wall, and greatly enhanced the cultural influence of the Great Wall.

In 2021, the “Great Wall Hero 2021—Beijing Winter Charms” event was held at the Beijing National Speed Skating Oval, which is nicknamed “The Ice Ribbon.” The event showed off Beijing’s sporting and cultural facilities as a winter sports capital, alongside lively Spring Festival folk cultural elements. Virtual Intensive Study in China Trigger Exchange between China and UK Youth

CHENGDU, China, July 22, 2022 /PRNewswire/ — When the two-week Mandarin Excellence Programme (MEP) virtual study trip to China pulled the curtain down on July 15, more than 1,500 secondary school students from 64 schools across England had completed the online summer camp of learning Chinese and Chinese cultural under four themes of panda zoo, sport and modern life, Chinese campus, history and cultural heritage.

Supported by Chinese peers, UK students had immersed themselves in Chinese through live classes, video tours, folk experiences, concerts, family visits and other interactive activities which were designed by 16 host institutions from 11 Chinese mainland cities. As the host institute in Chengdu, capital city of China’s southwest Sichuan Province, teachers from the Department of International Chinese Education, Southwest Jiaotong University designed the panda themed part of the immersed activities of the intensive study and leaded them to a journey with giant pandas.

The camp started from a virtual tour in a panda zoo in Chengdu, the hometown of pandas. British students asked panda experts various questions in this tour, made paper panda dolls and created stories by what they made followed the tour.

During this two-week online summer camp, British students also visited Tianfu Greenway, the longest city greenway, the Sanxingdui Museum which is about ancient Shu Dynasty dating back 3,000 years and Daoming Bamboo Art Village, a bamboo woven intangible cultural heritage spot. “Pretty”, “cool” and “colorful” were top three words on their minds about Chengdu, of course, after the word “xiongmao” (panda).

With scenery and heritages of the city lingering on their minds, British and Chinese students designed electronic posters about the Greenway, painted masks from Sanxingdui Museum together. Also in the live room, several student representatives from schools in Chengdu shared their school life with British peers and guided a visit to the family of one Chinese student.

“The MEP virtual China trip was a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity that allowed me and my classmates to communicate with other students our age while learning mandarin! My favourite thing was when we made stop motion stories about pandas we had crafted from paper! Although it was very different from going to china in real life, it was still incredibly enjoyable,” said Francesca Walton, a ninth grade British student.

Highlighting the importance of the programme to the UK, British Council Director China Matt Burney said: “I’m delighted to see that through our Mandarin Excellence Programme, we are connecting the young generation of people in the UK and China through language learning. Mandarin Chinese is the most widely spoken first language in the world. I look forward to seeing more UK pupils acquire the skill of Mandarin language and work together with their Chinese peers to deepen the trust and understanding of our two countries.”

Funded by the Department for Education (England) and delivered by University College London (UCL) Institute of Education in partnership with the British Council, the MEP is a unique intensive language programme that started in 2016. There are now around 8,000 pupils enrolled on the programme in 75 schools in England. This virtual visit to China, as the important part of MEP programme, offers students a real-life focus on learning Mandarin Chinese and aims to foster cultural understanding and mutual appreciation.

China Matters explores the promise of smart cities in Guiyang

BEIJING, April 23, 2022 /PRNewswire/ — Why smart cities? From all perspectives, it ticks all the boxes: innovation, technology and new economy. On a day-to-day basis, it makes our urban environments more liveable, it saves energy, keeps traffic flowing and keeps us safe.

In 2020, China was estimated to have some 800 smart cities under construction or in planning – that’s about half of the world’s total. And that number is continually rising.

And key to powering these smart cities is technologies like 5G, artificial intelligence and big data. Guiyang, the capital city of Guizhou province, has been a hotbed for experimenting with digital transformation in the country’s push towards building smart cities, thus a smart society.  Smart cities are an integral part of China’s continued push for urbanization to drive the country’s economic development now and in the years to come.

More than 5,000 big data companies take residence in Guiyang including Alibaba, Baidu, Apple and Google, to name a few. That’s because, for years, Guizhou has been home to the country’s first national big data experimental zone. And now it has opened the floodgates for a shift from a smart-city concept to a smart-city reality.

China Matters’ Josh Arslan goes to Guiyang to see what ordinary folks can get out of living in a smart city? What benefits it brings? He also meets up with people behind the innovations that power a smart city from facial recognition to a car parking app vital in congested cities to autonomous vehicles, redefining the way we live, work and play.
