A notice was issued a few weeks ago encouraging people to stay where they work and live during the 2021 Spring Festival holiday, from Feb. 11 to 17, to reduce the risk of the virus spreading.

Beijing, with a permanent migrant population of nearly 10 million, is ready to accommodate the people with a hearty and homelike reception.

The Beijing Municipal Government has rolled out measures to ensure those who stay in the city enjoy the Spring Festival, including issuing shopping coupons and free entrance tickets. Besides, mobile phone users in Beijing are eligible for receiving 20 gigabyte free data packages during the festival.

Tens of millions of its citizens will be benefited by these favorable policies.

"We will be rehearsing and practicing during the Spring Festival," said Song Yan, a Peking Opera performer with 40 years’ experience. His Peking Opera troupe have also arranged festive performances in smaller venues to celebrate the New Year.

Josh Dominick works as a volunteer in a non-profit group to help the disabled. He has been living in Beijing for 20 years. "Making dumplings is like everything else. Practice always makes perfect. I hope that the dumplings I make this year will not fall apart," he said.

Yang Jiaxi (nicknamed Qiuqiu), an eight-year-old ice hockey player, has been playing ice hockey for more than four years. Now, he attends ice hockey training twice a week, even during the Spring Festival and dreams to become an excellent ice hockey player in the future.

Produced by the Information Office of Beijing Municipal Government, the seven-episode "I am in Beijing for Spring Festival" video series will show you how people from different countries and different backgrounds spend their Spring Festival in Beijing.

‘People’ chosen as Chinese character of the year

BEIJING, Dec. 30, 2020 — A news report by China.org.cn on China’s Chinese character of the year:

In a recently published list of buzzwords in China, "min", meaning "people," was chosen as the Chinese character of 2020, while "poverty alleviation" was crowned as the Chinese word of the year.

"Min," the people, are the target. Confronted with the unprecedented COVID-19 pandemic, China responded proactively. Swift screening, targeted prevention and control measures, effective treatment, rapid vaccine development and orderly work resumption –– all these efforts have helped guarantee the health and normal life of the 1.4 billion Chinese people, while giving them confidence and hope.

The character "min" is also closely linked with "poverty alleviation," the word of the year. An old saying, "Wishing all the common people free from hunger and cold," shows that the Chinese people have held a sincere desire for the wellbeing of their fellow countrymen since ancient times. By the end of 2020, China already managed to achieve its goal of eliminating poverty despite the pandemic. With poverty-stricken counties being removed from the list one after another, being "free from hunger and cold" is no longer just a vision. It has now become reality, with no one being left behind.

"Min" implies the endeavor to better fulfill people’s wishes. The first-ever Civil Code since China’s founding will come into force in 2021. The document features many new provisions, such as personality rights, dignity of life and a peaceful private life, all of which reflect the specific demands of the people in the new era, with the aim of better safeguarding their rights through improved legislation. In addition, while formulating the 14th Five-Year Plan (2021-2025), the government also solicited opinions and suggestions from the public, with a view to better promoting the people’s interests.

The people are not only the target, but also a source of confidence, representing the power of the people and the spirit of the nation. In the past year, some Chinese people stayed home voluntarily for quarantine purposes; some joined the medical teams or contributed in whatever ways they could. People from all over the country initiated a group-buying campaign, for products made in Hubei, the hardest-hit province in the pandemic. Many chose to leave cities to offer their help in the least developed places, and numerous people living in hardships have been struggling forward. The Chinese people have provided the country with the confidence and conviction to face future challenges.

The people also embody hope for the future. 2021 marks the beginning of China’s "14th Five-Year Plan" period. On the agenda of the recent Central Economic Work Conference, keywords such as "income," "employment," "housing" and "elderly care" were all centered around one common theme: for the people.

The character "min" can be seen as both a target and a source of conviction. In 2021, the Chinese people will stand together to face challenges and embrace the future.

China Matters tells the story of Ms. Pan and her Mountaintop Guesthouse

BEIJING, Dec. 29, 2020 — As Pan Qingqing sips on a traditional Chinese tea, she glances out the window of her mountaintop guesthouse. The view is splendid with billowing clouds and valleys, and this is swiftly followed by laughter and loud chatter in the guesthouse where she is right in the middle of a jovial conversation with her guests who have made the trip to Xiangjian village in the southern city of Hangzhou.

jwplayer.key=”3Fznr2BGJZtpwZmA+81lm048ks6+0NjLXyDdsO2YkfE=”

jwplayer(‘myplayer1’).setup({file: ‘https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=c-e-VA6mT1k’, image: ‘http://www.prnasia.com/video_capture/3234410_AE34410_1.jpg’, autostart:’false’, aspectratio: ’16:9′, stretching : ‘fill’, width: ‘600’, height: ‘338’});

The 44-year-old is one of many in Lin’an District to have built guesthouses to attract more visitors from home and abroad. For her, this is an opportunity to bring changes to her hometown. And her plans have been supported by the Hangzhou government.

The key to this change has been to combine the local surroundings with the arts to create something fresh where you wouldn’t expect it. And the guesthouses like Ms. Pan’s brings the two together.

Bigger than life-size installations of bamboo art now decorate the halls. When guests sit down for an afternoon tea and food, cups and cutlery sets made from local bamboo wood don the tables. Ms. Pan has been inviting artistic to come and showcase their mastery.

However, it wasn’t all plain sailing at the start. After studying in France, she finally chose to come back to Lin’an. And even though she left all those years ago as a child, no one could deny how special the place was to her.

But as things would have it, Ms. Pan’s father, an experienced tourism operator, opposed the guesthouse plans. He sighted poor accessibility, small population, and an underdeveloped economy in the area as potential pitfalls. Nevertheless, she saw differently. She wasn’t deterred. She believed in the changes her guesthouse would bring.

And now, she is hosting variety of events throughout the year. Recently, she launched a bamboo art exhibition. The bamboo artist was able to teach local villagers how to weave locally-sourced bamboo artworks. Just recently as October, at the tail-end of local rice harvest season, she gathered young agricultural entrepreneurs to taste the new rice and exchange their products to promoting their hometowns.

So, Xiangjian village is just the tip of the iceberg. It represents this innovative take on how to build tourism in rural Hangzhou. In this video, British host Josh went to visit the guesthouse and see the transformation of villages in Hangzhou through nature and modern arts. The video was filmed and produced by China Matters.

In Africa, children with disabilities are at high risk of physical, emotional, and sexual abuse, and are often abandoned by their families. Misconceptions and superstitions are prevalent. For example, people say that disabilities are due to divine punishment (with those suffering from disabilities often referred to as "snakes" as they lie on the ground). These children are in dire need of specialized care and attention to improve their quality of life. In Bombouaka, Togo, Kodjo, a 14-year-old child in a wheelchair, helps his classmate with homework before a soccer game in a makeshift classroom at the Don Orione Center — a care center for children with severe physical and intellectual disabilities. Kodjo’s act shows tremendous kindness, love, solidarity, and companionship.

Various kinds of water lilies are grown, and almost 10,000 acres of canal and wetland areas are overflowing with these beautiful plants. About 70% of the people in this village are associated with water lily cultivation. The two farmers in the photo are working together to process water lilies in order to sell them in a market, enabling them to support their families.

Farmers rely on mother nature to take care of their crops. As the global warming crisis escalates, the change of weather patterns become more extreme and unpredictable, resulting in more droughts and floods. This farmer was devastated when seeing the impact of drought on her farmland. Her sister comforts her by showing support, compassion, and companionship.

According to the Health and Family Welfare Ministry, over 33,000 people are infected with waterborne diseases during the monsoon season from June to September in Bangladesh. As heavy rains in the neighboring Indian state of Assam caused massive floods in Bangladesh, many people were impacted. People helped each other regardless of age, demonstrating that they can overcome the challenges posed by these floods with love, support, and companionship.

ViewSonic Announces Winners of the ColorPro(TM) Award 2020 Global Photography Contest

BREA, Calif., Nov. 13, 2020 — ViewSonic Corp., a leading global provider of visual and educational solutions, organized the ColorPro Award 2020 Global Photography Contest in cooperation with four leaders in the creative industry – Blurb, Shoot the Frame (STF), Tinyspace, and TourBox – centered on the theme of kindness, so as to promote compassion and beauty through creativity. ViewSonic received more than 2,100 extraordinary photo entries from 18 countries and regions, which offered visual representations of the ubiquity of kindness. ViewSonic announced the contest’s winners on November 13 – World Kindness Day – through a global, live-streamed awards ceremony.

James Chu, Chairman and CEO of ViewSonic, said, "I’m delighted that this contest has elicited such a strong response among creators worldwide. During this difficult time of the COVID-19 pandemic, ViewSonic has worked with its partners to highlight stories of kindness from around the globe to provide some much-needed positivity. The contest has shown that, no matter how dramatic the changes to people’s lives have been, kindness is still all around us. I sincerely hope that people will continue to use photography to explore heartwarming stories of kindness."

The top three entries in the ColorPro Award 2020 Global Photography Contest all conveyed heartwarming messages through their photography. The first-prize winner, Spain’s Antonio Aragon Renuncio, made a photograph titled Kindness of 14-year-old Kodjo in Bombouaka, Togo, who is helping a classmate with homework before a soccer game at a care center for children with severe physical and intellectual disabilities. The friendship and compassion shown by Kodjo help disabled children, who are often referred to as "snakes" in their local communities, enjoy normal lives.

Bangladesh’s Tanvir Alam has won the second prize for Harvesting Water Lily, which uses a bird’s-eye view to show a colorful image of harmony between man and nature, with two farmers working together to process water lilies. The third prize has been awarded to Singapore’s Chin Leong Teo for his photograph Drought Ladies. Shot from behind two women, the image shows the helplessness of people in the face of major natural disasters but also the warmth of the woman who consoles her sister in a powerful symbol of mutual support.

At the live-streamed awards ceremony, ViewSonic also invited Chen-Yu Chiu, CEO of the Taiwan-Reyhanli Centre for World Citizens, to share the photos of civic events held near the border between Turkey and Syria and to explain what kindness means to him. Chiu stated that "a grim concrete border wall was transformed into a Taiwan-built center that serves to convey kindness from the world to people in Turkey and Syria. Kindness derives from our close experience of the environment in which we find ourselves, as well as our innate compassion and empathy, and is accentuated by a little bit of craziness and persistence."

Huai-An Ho, President of the HoHuan Theatre Company, which has held 660 free performances at hospitals and clinics over the past 18 years in Taiwan, also took part in the ceremony to share his views on kindness through two photographs. The first photo showed a Mazinger Z figure holding the hand of a little boy as they are about to enter a hospital room and perform for a young girl, demonstrating that kindness can help even the weakest among us be as strong as super heroes. The other photo showed a renowned Peking opera master who, despite his old age and dementia, can still sing the songs he performed during his long career, a touching symbol of persistence. Ho added that "cancer cannot be transmitted, but kindness can" and that "even if I’m unable to do great things, I can still show love while doing many little things."

To further enhance the power of kindness, ViewSonic also launched a special event called "You comment, ViewSonic Donates," which will last until January 13, 2021. ViewSonic invites people to take part in spreading kindness by going to the event page: https://www.facebook.com/events/987244695108535/ leaving comments about or sharing one of the top 10 photos, explaining why they like the photo, or sending a message to the photographer. For each instance in which a message is left or a photo is shared, ViewSonic will donate US$1 to the HoHuan Theatre Company[1].

ViewSonic has put the top 100 entries on the contest’s official website (https://colorproaward.shoottheframe.com/), allowing people to see kindness in all types of interactions between people, between people and animals, and between people and nature.

[1] The donation cap is US$10,000.

East China’s Hangzhou puts on online expo to showcase global cultural and creative products

HANGZHOU, China, Nov. 6, 2020 — The 14th Hangzhou Cultural and Creative Industry Expo was held in Hangzhou, capital of Zhejiang Province in southeastern China, from Oct. 29 to Nov. 1. The expo attracted more than 4,000 cultural institutions and enterprises from more than 60 countries and regions to participate online and offline. The total number of participating brands increased by 60% compared with the previous expo. The exhibition area of overseas brands remained at 40% of the total exhibition area. During the exhibition, the main venue received more than 60,000 visitors, the two online sub-venues received more than 930 million clicks, and completed on-site transactions and project contracts worth 2.19 billion yuan.

In the past 14 years, amid new culture, new consumption and new life, the expo has not only become one of China’s four major cultural exhibition activities, but also Hangzhou’s cultural landmark and an important platform for building an international cultural and creative center.

Online expo stays open throughout the year

With the rapid development of China’s new economy, more and more consumers are using the Internet to communicate, and online shopping has become a trend. This year’s expo also features two online sub-venues, allowing citizens to visit the exhibition without leaving their homes.

As one of the online sub-venues of the expo, Dongjia App is an online shopping platform specially set up for excellent traditional craftsmen at home and abroad. According to Meng Wenbo, president of the app, more than 2,000 exhibitors at home and abroad have "transferred" their offline works to the app, presenting their works in a three-dimensional and diversified manner by means of pictures, videos and live broadcasts. Alexandre Turpault textiles from France, Knit Planet children’s clothing from the UK, Festka bikes from the Czech Republic… Visitors can find all of these global creative products on the platform, and place an order with a few clicks and have them delivered to their home.

"The expo used to be held offline in a relatively short period. With the digitalization of the event, the online venue has opened up more possibilities for people to browse, communicate and buy through mobile phones anytime and anywhere, creating a year-long 24-hour event," Meng added.

Cultural and creative products gain life as part of life

The online expo which enables easy purchase and delivery makes cultural and creative products more accessible. However, Meng believes that the more charming part of Hangzhou’s cultural industry lies in the fact that many designers’ creative works are based on integrating the essence of eastern traditional culture into the daily life of modern people.

Born in 1990, Liu Weixue is a paper umbrella designer who focuses on the innovation of umbrella surface. "Only by making innovations based on a full understanding of the technological core of the past system can traditional techniques be better protected and passed on." In order to make paper umbrella technology with new vitality, Liu is trying to develop different derivatives of paper umbrella.

Yao Yuting, who grew up in a silk workshop, is the inheritor of the intangible cultural heritage of Hangzhou satin (a thick, smooth and shiny silk fabric made in Hangzhou).

"I hope to make Hangzhou satin closer to life. After all, Hangzhou satin has a history of thousands of years. To better inherit and develop it, more people need to know it, understand it and feel it," she said. Thanks to her efforts, the products produced by the weaving factory now combine silk with landscapes, home decorations, architecture and other elements.

An expo of insights to power industrial growth

In 2018, the expo proposed the goal of becoming an insightful event. This not only means a display of global creative products, but also deep exchanges in the global cultural industry to push cultural and creative innovation to a new level.

The expo drew hundreds of experts and scholars from well-known universities at home and abroad such as German University of Lueneburg, British Schumacher College, Tsinghua University and Zhejiang University. Meanwhile, more than 100 well-known cultural and creative institutions at home and abroad such as Alibaba gathered to hold more than 20 professional activities such as an industry summit and the annual industry index release to jointly discuss the latest trends in the development of cultural industries.

After 14 years of development, the Hangzhou Cultural and Creative Industry Expo not only gathers creative products with traditional oriental aesthetic flavor and modern life elements, but also attracts more and more overseas established cultural and creative products to enter the Chinese market and innovate local consumption patterns. Just as Hangzhou, a traditional ancient city in the south of the Yangtze River, has become a modern smart city, the expo has never failed to display new vitality and vigor.

We have over the course of the last year been working on both alkaline and PEM large-scale solutions, which serve different customer needs, and we look forward to provide our PEM solution for this project," says Filip Smeets, SVP Nel Hydrogen Electrolyser, Nel Hydrogen Fueling.

Iberdrola, one of the largest electricity utilities in the world, has together with a world-leading fertilizer manufacturer Fertiberia launched a project to establish the largest green hydrogen plant in Europe. Located in Puertollano, Spain it will feature a 100 MW photovoltaic plant, a battery installation with a storage capacity of 20 MWh, and a 20 MW electrolyser. The hydrogen produced in the project will primarily be used for green fertilizer production. The 20 MW electrolyser is scheduled to commence operations in 2021.
