China Matters reveals the effort of a Chinese village in preventing falling back into poverty

BEIJING, July 2, 2021 — 2020 was undoubtedly the year of Covid-19 but in the same year, it is also the year of China’s eradication of absolute poverty in rural areas. And key to this has been China’s formula to focus on a collective effort where the urban and rural areas work together to achieve shared prosperity.

jwplayer.key=”3Fznr2BGJZtpwZmA+81lm048ks6+0NjLXyDdsO2YkfE=”

jwplayer(‘myplayer1’).setup({file: ‘https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Lh-Ikbaw0w8’, image: ‘http://www.prnasia.com/video_capture/3431650_AE31650_1.jpg’, autostart:’false’, aspectratio: ’16:9′, stretching : ‘fill’, width: ‘600’, height: ‘338’});

But could rural areas fall back into poverty? Do people still need to be supported from here and onwards? And how do you prevent people from falling back into poverty? China’s answer is ‘rural revitalization’. China Matters reveals the effort of a Chinese village in preventing falling back into poverty.

A year on, in 2021, as part of this strategy, rural areas like Sanjianxi village in Shandong province’s capital of Jinan, are kicking on and not looking back. Sanjianxi is now looking to tap into its own resources to further develop. It is aiming to become self-reliant by developing its own local tourism sites, creating its own industrial business zone and putting together sustainable agriculture that’s greener.

But how do you bring all these aspects together to make it work? And how do these benefit the village? British host Josh Arslan from China Matters goes to find out. He speaks to one lady who is behind Sanjianxi’s transformation as well as the lives of many in the village. And more importantly, Josh asks if this is a ‘pilot project’ whereby if successful, which can be replicated across other rural areas in China? And whether it could go as long as in narrowing the country’s longstanding rural-urban gap to bring up the living standards of rural residents to the level of their urban counterparts?

Suning.com Empowers Local Rice Brand with Tailored Farm-To-Table Approach During 618 Shopping Festival

NANJING, China, July 2, 2021 — Suning.com ("the Company"; 002024.SZ), China’s leading smart retail service provider and a Fortune Global 500 company owned by Suning Group, has successfully boosted the sales of high-quality agricultural products and brought a change to local agricultural brands with its industry-leading strengths in supply chain, logistics and retail sales, as the Company wrapped up its 618 shopping festival campaign.

During the 618 promotion, one of the largest of the year, Suning.com has made agricultural products one of the key focuses, in addition to cosmetics, home appliances and other consumer-electronic items.

Specifically, Suning.com has made efforts in promoting Wuchang rice under the Sutian brand name, as part of the Company’s tailored marketing strategy to boost and support agricultural products from rural areas. During the promotion, Sutian’s rice sold about 40 tons a day, reflecting Suning.com’s ongoing efforts to brand and promote these types of agricultural products.

The Sutian brand marks another successful attempt for Suning.com in helping agricultural brands to jump on the e-commerce bandwagon. Since 2019, Suning.com has actively identified quality agricultural products in a bid to help local farmers directly bring their products to more consumers across the country and in turn help consumers receive products directly from the source. Such a farm-to-table approach has been well received and recognized by both farmers and consumers alike, as it reduces costs for farmers and offers cheaper prices for consumers.

China’s Wuchang rice has been dubbed one of the best rice products in China with its annual production reaching about 500,000 tons. However, there has been knock-off Wuchang rice available on the market that uses Wuchang branding. Suning.com has joined forces with Wuchang Shanxiang Rice, a local rice farming company, to rebrand the local company’s old "Gu Uncle" brand and re-branded its Wuchang rice under the brand name of Sutian, so that consumers would no longer need to worry about counterfeits.

To ensure the best quality of Sutian rice, Suning.com fully participates in the operations of the product, including research, farming, packaging, marketing and sales on all the Company’s online and offline marketplaces. Suning.com even promoted the product through livestreaming sales.

Zhang Kui, president of Suning Social E-Commerce, said that the Sutian rice brand is a perfect example that showcases Suning.com’s goal of boosting the local agriculture industry, creating a more enhanced ecosystem and facilitating an industry upgrade.

A manager in charge of Wuchang Shanxiang Rice said that "we have not only obtained the brand endorsement with Suning’s support, but also optimized our operations to serve customers, which has led to a significant rise in sales volume and repurchases."

On June 1 alone, such Sutian rice sold 40 tons. To date, Sutian rice, supported by Suning, has a total farming area of over 300,000 mu (about 49400 acres), which can produce about 120,000 tons of rice. Since last December when Sutian rice was put onto the Suning marketplace, it has sold about 5 million kilograms.

Meituan Launches Green Tech Fund, and Other Initiatives on World Environment Day

HONG KONG, June 5, 2021 — Meituan (HKG: 3690) (the "Company"), China’s leading e-commerce platform for services, today announced the launch of the Meituan Green Tech Fund and a series of green initiatives to celebrate World Environment Day.

Meituan is allocating an initial amount of RMB 500 million for the Meituan Green Tech Fund to drive low-carbon green development together with industry organizations, researchers and scientists. In response to China’s carbon neutral efforts as a whole, this particular initiative aims to support the research and application of green technologies through charitable causes.

The United Nations has designated June 5th as World Environment Day, with this year’s theme: "Reimagine.Recreate.Restore." While this day has been celebrated since 1972, recent challenges caused by climate change and COVID-19 have brought environmental issues into focus with a greater sense of urgency. Meituan’s efforts strongly align with the United Nations’ goal of ecosystem restoration, and this new fund furthers the Company’s existing sustainability commitments.

The fund will focus on two initiatives, the Meituan Green Tech Award and a demonstration project. The Meituan Green Tech Award will support emerging researchers’ and scientists’ studies on fundamental technologies that support China’s low-carbon and circular development strategy. The demonstration project will encourage innovative applications in eco-friendly packaging, recycling, and smart supply chain operations.

This year, the Meituan Green Tech Award plans to support 10 researchers who focus on green and low-carbon packaging, carbon capture and utilization, low-carbon transport and energy storage studies, allocating a one million RMB award to each of them. The demonstration project will consist of 10 entities that deploy innovative applications in food delivery green packaging, plastics recycling, and big data supply chain developments, with a one to three million RMB fund designated for each of them.

Applications for both the tech award and the demonstration project will officially open for registration in late August, 2021.

Meituan is also launching a "carbon account" for its delivery merchants and users. Starting June 9th, merchants will be able to log and track their environmental protection efforts in their merchant app, including data on their reduction of disposable products and use of recycled packaging. Users can now track their carbon footprints in the Meituan app, by monitoring their "no-disposable cutlery" order history and eco-friendly transportation mileage data, which is accumulated through shared Meituan Bikes rides.

Meituan launched the Blue Mountain Project (青山计划) in August 2017 to drive sustainability efforts in the food delivery industry, bringing together merchants and users to participate in environmental protection initiatives. As part of its green life cycle management philosophy, Meituan Bikes recycles disposed polyurethane tires from its shared bikes and electric mopeds, using the material to build running tracks and sports grounds for people in remote areas. As of today, Meituan has created 10 such sports grounds in provinces such as Sichuan and Guizhou, benefiting over 5,000 students and residents. The Company plans to donate an additional 10 sports grounds by 2022.

TurtleTree Labs, the global leader in cell based milk, launches TurtleTree Scientific

SAN FRANCISCO, Jan. 6, 2021 — TurtleTree Labs, the global leader in cell-based milk, today announced the launch of TurtleTree Scientific, dedicated to the growth of food grade growth factors. Despite the costs of producing cell-based meat declining over the years, the cell culture media and growth factors remain one of the biggest cost contributors, hindering the path to market.

TurtleTree Scientific is commercialising the Growth Factors developed by TurtleTree Labs
TurtleTree Scientific is commercialising the Growth Factors developed by TurtleTree Labs

What does this mean for the cellular agriculture industry? In early 2021, TurtleTree Scientific will be working with cell-based meat companies on the production of food grade growth factors. The prices are expected to be a fraction of pharmaceutical grade equivalents on the market. Singapore, as the first country in the world to approve the sale of cell based meat products, is strategic as the country is bound to attract the attention of more cell-based companies and has existing customers that it can scale with.

The availability of cost-efficient growth factors will be essential for cellular agriculture to validate its economic feasibility. In addition, Singapore is also a regional biotech hub where quality growth factors are in high demand for their use in the life sciences industry.

Bruce Fredrich the executive director of Good Food Institute is very excited for this launch. "Singapore for the win again. The exciting work being done at Turtle Tree Labs is happening with tremendous support from the government, and other governments need to follow Singapore’s lead. Governments are interested in stopping the next pandemic and in keeping antibiotics working, and governments want to meet their climate obligations under the Paris climate agreement, so governments should be following Singapore’s lead and doing all they can to create a welcoming environment for innovative companies like TurtleTree Labs. Right now, Singapore is in a class by itself; other governments need to step up."

"Not only are we collaborating with local research institutes like NUS and NTU, but also global institutions like Wageningen University in the Netherlands. We have already started sending some samples to other cell based meat companies and aim to play a major role in this industry," says Max Rye, Chief Strategist of TurtleTree Labs.

TurtleTree Labs has recently raised US$9.4M from investors which include Prince Khaled bin Alwaleed’s KBW Ventures and Hong Kong venture capital firm Green Monday Ventures. As an arm of TurtleTree Labs, TurtleTree Scientific will have its own team of experienced industry players driving it.

The fourth CIIE begins taking stall reservations from exhibitors

SHANGHAI, Nov. 13, 2020 — Some exhibitors planning to attend the fourth China International Import Expo (CIIE) next year started to reserve their stalls on Nov 8. This is the first time that the CIIE has offered such an option.

Five dairy companies – Fonterra, Mille, Ausnutria, Yashily and Saputo – marked their reserved booths on a map of the fourth CIIE.

Companies showcasing products at the beauty makeup section of the Consumer Goods Exhibition Area, pharmaceutical products section of the Medical Equipment & Healthcare Products Exhibition Area, and dairy products section of the Food and Agricultural Exhibition Area will receive priority when reserving their exhibition stalls, as part of new measures adopted by the fourth CIIE.

"We hope to explore a mechanism where exhibitors can choose their preferred stalls on their own starting from next year," said a worker responsible for recruiting exhibitors to the fourth CIIE.

He added that exhibitors can decide earlier to attend the expo and make preparations in advance.

The stalls at the CIIE’s Food and Agricultural Products Area have always proved to be popular among exhibitors wanting to make reservations.

The exhibition area occupied by dairy companies at the third CIIE was nearly 10,000 square meters, with six of the top eight dairy companies in the world taking part in.

The fourth CIIE’s Food and Agricultural Products Area has remained popular, with over 10 dairy companies having signed on to attend and their signed exhibition areas surpassing a total area of 5,000 square meters.

Over 120 beauty makeup and daily chemical companies have been invited to make reservations for exhibition stalls at the fourth CIIE, and many of them are currently signing agreements or making down payments.

Due to high exhibitor demand, the fourth CIIE’s beauty makeup and daily chemical product section is expected to expand to 25,000 square meters from 20,000 sq m this year.

China is the largest and most significant market for Fonterra. The CIIE has provided development opportunities for them, said Han Li, Vice-President of Fonterra Greater China, explaining why they continue to attend the expo and make reservations.

The fourth CIIE began taking applications from business exhibitors on Sept 28. It will set up six business exhibition areas: Intelligent Industry & Information Technology, Consumer Goods, Automobile, Food and Agricultural Products, Medical Equipment & Healthcare Products and Trade in Services.
