Sony has been making some of the best Noise Cancelling headphones and other audio peripherals in the current market. Their WH-1000XM2 for example received high praises when it was launched. We loved it too when we reviewed it here.
The 1000X family, in our opinions are the current kings when it comes to noise cancelling audio solutions. There is however, one issue; they are not made to take on copious amount of sweat. So in that sense, they are not meant for you to do sports with.
Sony listens, no pun intended, to their customers. So when their customers say that they want an audio solution with their brilliant active noise cancelling technology while running, they get it. Say ‘hello’ to Sony’s new sports earphones line. In that line you get the WF-SP700N, WI-SP600N, and the WI-SP500 wireless earphones.
The most compact of the bunch, the WF-SP700N is pretty much like the WF-1000X. It is the complete wireless solution like the high-end ear buds. It has pretty much the same concept as well. It has a charging case that can charge it about twice more.
The WF-SP700N comes in more colours than the WF-1000X though. It comes in four funky colour options. You can get the wireless earphones in pink, yellow, or even plain black, or white.
The noise cancelling earphones will last outside the charging box about 3 hours before you need to put it back in the charging case. The charging case is even more compact than the WF-1000X if you might so it fits in your gym duffel bag better. It will not even create a weird crease on your running pants when you slide into the pockets.
The WF-SP700N’s charging case has NFC one-touch connection that would allow you to connect your smartphones to the earphones via a single touch and the Sony | Headphones Connect App. After that the earphones stay connected to your smartphone via Bluetooth 4.1. Via the app as well you can control all the audio settings like the equalizer and what not. The app also has a “Quick Sound Settings” that allows you to quickly recall your favourite settings in a few clicks.
For your sporting needs, the earphones are IPX4 rated to stand any sort of sweat bath you can give it. That, and also a copious amount of rain that you might subject it to if you run in the rain. The rubber designed arc supporters will ensure that the earphones stay in the ear no matter the activity.
Audio is handled via a 6mm driver that pumps audio directly into your ears. Like the WF-1000X the noise cancelling software on the earphones also has an Ambient Sound mode. That is important if you do take it out of the gym, it feeds noise from around your environment so that you can stay alerted on what is happening around you. The 6mm drivers is also from Sony’s EXTRA BASS line which also means that you get deeper and punchier music to accompany your workout routine.
Alongside the WF-700N Sony also released the WI-SP600N wireless noise cancelling earphones. The WI-SP600N does not have the same charging case that the WF-700N earphones. But it would not be an issue when the earphones can last you about 6 hours.
The wireless earphones are charged via a regular USB port for the lack of the fancy charging case. It also has the same IPX4 rating that would be useful when you get your intense on in the gym or when you are out running. The band that sits behind your neck will ensure that the earphones do not go missing even when they drop; which will not happen anyway since it is also designed to stay in your ears.
It connects via NFC too, a single touch and Sony | Heaphones App makes that magic happens. It remains connected also via the Bluetooth 4.1. It is the same 6mm driver as well with the WF-700N which also means that you get the EXTRA BASS drivers that pumps your ears with deep and rich audio.
Then there is the WI-SP500 earphones. The wireless earphones are largely similar to the WI-SP600N in concept. It also has the same NFC sensor, IPX4 rating, and noise cancellation technology as the WI-SP600N and WF-700N earphones. But those are where the similarities end.
The design looks a little different for a start. Inside the unique looking earphones you get a bigger driver than the other two earphones. It is a 13.5mm driver unit. But it is not the EXTRA BASS driver you get from the other two. So you do not get the same deep and punchy audio you get. But with bigger drivers you get better and wider dynamics anyway.
It is also not the same closed-dynamic type as the two either. It is an open-air type. What that does is allow the drivers recognise the ambient sound in the environment. The driver will then adjust to the ambient noise just like an active noise cancelling earphone does.
The WI-SP500 sports an eight hour battery life that should allow you to listen to music even way after you are done with gym sessions. It comes with a special carrying case too for when you are done with the earphones. It also connects to your smartphone via NFC and stays connected via a Bluetooth 4.2.
The new Sony earphones does not only contain Sony’s brilliant noise cancelling technology. They are all smarter too thanks to Google. The three earphones are now optimised for Google Assistant. The earphones now will listen to you too and with Google Assistant will give you any sort of answer you need as you command it with a simple “OK Google”. Of course you have to connect it with your smartphone.
The WF-SP700N, WI-SP600N, and WI-SP500 are now available in Malaysia through Sony’s authorised retailers and distributors nationwide. The earphones will set you back MYR709, MYR619, and MYR329 respectively. Google Assistant optimisation will be available on all three earphones and other earphones like the WH-1000XM2, WI-1000X, WF-1000X, and WH-H900N.
