Samsung Compliments the Note8 with the Galaxy Note Fan Edition
The Samsung Galaxy Note8 launched a month ago to much fanfare in Malaysia. Despite its premium price tag of RM3,999, the Note8 has still gone on to become one of Samsung’s best selling phablets to date. That said, the premium price tag also means that many consumers are unable to afford their much talked about device.
That won’t be the case from now. The company has silently announced the availability of the Samsung Galaxy Note Fan Edition. The new Fan Edition of the Galaxy Note brings along with it the familiar body of the ill-fated but much praised Samsung Galaxy Note7 of last year. However, the new Galaxy Note Fan Edition brings along with it the latest iteration of Samsung’s version of Android which we saw earlier this year in S8 and the Note8.
Also making an appearance on the Galaxy Note Fan Edition is Samsung’s virtual assistant, Bixby. However, the Note FE will not be receiving full Bixby functionality; which means no Bixby Vision or Bixby Voice. Also notably absent is the Bixby button which we saw on the Note8 and S8.
That said, the Note FE will come with the Note’s signature S-Pen. This includes the features which the Note series has become renown for such as the screen off memo, S Note and Air Command. However, there are some features which remain exclusive to the Note8. One of these features is the 100 page limit of the screen off memo. That said, GIF creation and Pin memo to always on display will be coming to the Galaxy Note Fan Edition.
On the Camera front, the Galaxy Note Fan Edition will be coming with a 12-megapixel Dual Pixel sensor on the back. No, that doesn’t mean that it will have two camera modules. However, Samsung’s dual pixel technology promises better camera performance in low light conditions. It also comes with optical image stablilisation (OIS). On the selfie front, the Note FE comes with a 5-megapixel sensor. Both sensors have an aperture of f/1.7 and are capable of high dynamic range (HDR) capture.
The Galaxy Note Fan Edition will be inheriting the processor of the Galaxy Note7: the Exynos 8890. This processor is an 8-core processor with 4 cores clocked at 2.3GHz and 4 cores clocked at 1.6GHz. The processor is no slouch and has proven itself in the Galaxy S7 edge and Galaxy S7. It will also come with 4GB of RAM as in the Note7. On the storage front, the Note FE will be available only with 64GB of on board storage which can be supplemented with a microSD card. This allows users to add on up to 256GB of memory.
The Samsung Galaxy Note Fan Edition will be powered by a smaller 3,200mAh batter compared to the Note7’s 3,500mAh battery. Samsung reassures fans that the battery of the Note FE has undergone its strenuous 8-point batter check which it implemented in the wake of last year’s Note7 fiasco. The company guarantees the safety of the device and the battery. Also a “note”-able difference is the Galaxy Note Fan Edition logo on the back of the device.
The Galaxy Note Fan Edition will be retailing for RM2,599 (USD$616.40), a whopping RM1,400 (USD$332) less than the Note8. The Galaxy Note Fan Edition will be available in Coral Blue and Black Onyx. It will be available from the 25th of October 2017 at Samsung Experience Stores around Malaysia and also from Samsung’s Partners Nationwide.
