The Samsung #AGalaxyEvent has been unpacked! At the event, the South Korean behemoth took to the stage to unveil two new devices in their mid-range, Galaxy A series. The new devices bring more than just a hardware refresh to the company’s mid range line up; it’s a new take on the mid range line up which seems to signal a paradigm change in the company’s approach to their mid-range line up. Since its 2017 line up, the Galaxy A series has been introducing features and specifications which were once reserved for the company’s flagships. This year, Samsung is introducing company and industry firsts through its mid-range Galaxy A series. The new Galaxy A7 holds the distinction of being the company’s first device with a triple camera set up while the new Galaxy A9 is the first smartphone in the industry to have a quad camera setup.
Samsung Galaxy A7 (2018)
The Samsung Galaxy A7 (2018) was announced earlier through a global press release from Samsung. The Galaxy A7’s hallmark feature is the new triple camera setup which consists of a 24-megapixel, f/1.7 sensor with phase detection autofocus (PDAF), an 8-megapixel, f/2.4 ultrawide sensor with a 13mm focal length and a 5-megapixel, f/2.2 depth sensor. Samsung claims that the new A7 will be your go to device for #instaworthy pictures. That said, the smartphone is one of the most camera focused releases to date from Samsung (barring the A9 2018).
While it may be focusing on photography, the Samsung Galaxy A7 (2018) is no slouch when it comes to specifications. It runs on an Exynos 7880 Octa-core processor clocked at 2.2GHz with 4GB RAM and 128GB onboard storage. It’s powered by a 3,300mAh battery. Samsung Galaxy A9 (2018)
The biggest announcement at the event was the new Samsung Galaxy A9 (2018); the industry’s first phone with a quad camera setup. The Galaxy A9 (2018) is also the company’s first time delving into anodisation and gradient colouring. These processes are what give the A9 its signature coloration. While the striking Bubblegum Pink and Lemonade Blue are highlights of the Galaxy A9, the mainstay will be the new camera setup.
The Galaxy A9 (2018) comes with a 24-megapixel main camera sensor with a f/1.7 aperture and PDAF. This is complemented with 3 more sensors: a 5-megapixel depth sensor with an f/2.2 aperture, an 8-megapixel ultra-wide sensor with an f/2.4 aperture, 120° viewing angle and 12mm focal length, and a 10-megapixel telephoto lens for 2x zoom with an f/2.4 aperture. The new setup allows users to take different perspectives and tell different stories when it comes to getting the most instaworthy shot. From ultra-wide shots to zoom shots to the portrait mode. It’s all available on the Samsung Galaxy A9 (2018) thanks to the new quad camera. The front facing selfie camera is also a 24-megapixel sensor with f/2.0 aperture and high dynamic range for colours that pop on your selfies.
Aside from the cutting edge camera, the A9 (2018) will be running on a Qualcomm Snapdragon 660 processor clocked 2.2GHz. This is complemented with 6GB of RAM and 128GB of onboard storage.
