The OPPO brand name should be very familiar to you and other Malaysians by now. It is actually one of Malaysia’s favourite brands and why would they not be with their super affordable offering with better-than-expected build quality and a very polished and simplified user experience. That combination of affordability and great device makes it one of the best value-for-money devices in the market these days.
You can also say that OPPO has always been at the forefront of new technologies. Yes, we are saying that. They were the first smartphone maker that integrated AI into their front facing camera. They were the first to modernise the selfie camera into a pop-up slider on the Find X. They were also the first to introduce a swivelling camera on an older Find model. What about the super-minimal notch they call the waterdrop design making for an almost properly full-view display? Yes, they did that.
Now, they are the first brand, in Malaysia at least to sport the new Qualcomm Snapdragon 710 SoC in their new smartphone. Welcome to the new OPPO R17 pro, the new OPPO mid-range flagship that is also their brand new ‘camera phone’. Yes, this is the first smartphone with the Qualcomm Snapdragon 710 in Malaysia currently.
The OPPO R17 Pro is not just first in introducing the brand new SoC to the market though. It is also the first to bring us the brand new Corning Gorilla Glass 6 on its beautiful display measuring in at 6.4-inch. The large display underneath the super tough glass is an AMOLED panel which also means that colours should really pop. One of the best AMOLED displays I have seen are on OPPO devices these days weirdly. You get the same waterdrop notch design too as the OPPO F9 smartphone so you lose less of the display real estate to a bar that is quite useless when you use the device. On the notch though is a selfie camera that packs 25-Megapixels in that single Sony IMX576 sensor with f/2.0 aperture and HDR support for maximum photo quality even in the dark. Did we mention that the selfie AI can do up to 8 million beautification schemes? Oh, and it detects up to four people now so wefies are made even better on the R17 pro.
Underneath the skin is a brand new SoC from Qualcomm, the Snapdragon 710 that is paired to an Adreno 616 GPU and 8GB of RAM for maximum bang-for-buck performance on the device. The brand new 700 series from Qualcomm is the new standard for premium mid-range smartphones which should prove to pack a punch for the OPPO R17 Pro. It packs a 128GB of storage, and it needs that kind of storage for what the high-resolution photos that not only comes from the front of the device, but the back as well. All these internal parts are powered by a non-removeable Lithium battery that packs about 3,700mAh to power the device through a day. It may not sound like much but it is large enough for a modern smartphone and you know OPPO devices last a long time.
Out the back is a triple-camera module that packs one 12-Megapixel sensor, one 20-Megapixel sensor, and one depth sensor that is paired to their AI software to achieve ultimate and natural Bokeh. The 12-Megapixel sensor has a variable aperture technology, a la the Samsung Galaxy S9 with either f/1.5 or 1/2.4 aperture for either low-light photography or a rich lighting condition. The 20-Megapixel sensor has a f/2.6 aperture for a more well-rounded performance. The main camera packs OIS too now just-in-case you have shaky hands from the chill of the night. The AI though can detect up to 864 photo scenarios out of the 23 different shoot modes that the AI determines as well for your convenience.
The camera module is wrapped around in 2.5D curved glass that contains a very unusual gradient colour that they call Radiant Mist (there is an Emerald Green one too). The Radiant Mist is an interesting colour that combines about four different colours on the back of the device. You can see different colours from different angles and the result is nothing short of breathtaking; at least we like it.
The OPPO R17 Pro just started selling yesterday actually, at their roadshow in their official store in Pavillion Kuala Lumpur. You can get your hands on these beauties in all OPPO flagship stores or official dealers nationwide. It will set you back MYR2,699 which can be a little steep to look at. It is still one of the best value-for-money devices in the current market though, and you are getting a heck-of-a looker in the OPPO R17 Pro.
