OPPO is a brand that has become synonymous with the Selfie Smartphone. Their focus on the front facing camera of smartphones in a vast majority of their devices makes them uniquely geared for innovations which focus on the front camera and selfies as a whole. With their in itial offering when they entered the international market, the OPPO N1, the company proved that they could think out of the box when it came to the selfie camera in smartphones. With the introduction of the brand new OPPO F5, the company again rethinks its approach to the selfie camera; in fact, it lets the camera do the thinking!
The OPPO F5 joins the successful F-series of selfie focused devices which has been a boon to the company’s lineup. The F5 inherits OPPO’s simplistic, metallic approach to the smartphone and instead focuses on the software features of the front facing camera.
The OPPO F5 will be running on the MediaTek Helio P23 Octa-core (8-core) processor which is clocked at 2.5GH and the Mali-G71 MP2 graphics processor. These processors are supported by 4GB of RAM and 32GB of on board storage. The latter can be expanded with the use of a microSD card slot with up to 256GB of additional memory.
On the display front, the OPPO F5 is the first device from the Chinese manufacturer which comes with a FullView display with an 18:9 aspect ratio. The FullView display will be an IPS LCD display with FullHD+ resolution with 1080×2160 pixels and 402 pixels per inch.
When it comes to connectivity, the OPPO F5 comes with Dual-SIM support with dual 4G LTE standby. It is also capable of Bluetooth 4.2 LE and WiFi 802.11 a/b/g/n. The F5 doesn’t come with the new USB-C connector, instead it comes with the old microUSB type B connector. The device will be powered by a 3,200mAh batter. There’s no indication of fast charging on the OPPO F5.
Artificial Intelligence for Selfies with the OPPO F5
On the camera front, the OPPO F5 comes with a 16-megapixel main camera which has a f/1.8 aperture. It also has an LED flash and is capable of phase detection autofocus (PDAF), High Dynamic Range (HDR) and 1080p video recording at 30 frames per second (fps).
The selfie camera of the OPPO F5 is a 20-megapixel sensor with an f/2.0 aperture and has a 1/2.8-inch sensor size. This is the camera which OPPO has included what they call “A.I. Beauty Recognition” technology. OPPO claims that the technology will be able to determine and recognise the skin tone, gender and age of the individuals in the selfie and dynamically adapt their “beautification” uniquely to each of them. It does this by scanning more than 200 facial feature spots and matching the relevant details to a worldwide database they’ve curated over the years.
The AI technology and 200 spot facial feature recognition also allows OPPO to introduce a new facial unlock feature. Although there’s not much more that was shared on the specifics of the facial unlock, its a welcomed complement to the fingerprint sensor located on the back of the device.
The OPPO F5 will be retailing for RM1,298 (USD$307.28) and will be available for pre-orders from the 2nd of November until the 10th of November from any of the 888 OPPO authorised dealers, the OPPO website or LAZADA, 11street or Shopee. The device will be available in retailers from the 11th of November.
