When Microsoft acquired Nokia, it left some remnants behind. One of the products left behind was HERE Maps which Nokia’s mapping service. HERE sits comfortably as one of the top alternatives to Google Maps and Apple Maps. HERE Maps made appearance on iOS two years ago but this was short lived. Now, it seems that Android is ready to give it a try.
Nokia recently announced that it has partnered with Samsung to bring HERE Maps to Android and Tizen. The app will be launched around the same time the Gear S makes it to our shelf. It will work on Gear devices and Tizen smartphones but it won’t be compatible with all Android devices.
However, Nokia is looking to release a Gear S and HERE Maps combo. It seems logical since the 3G smartwatch will be kind of uninteresting with the map app. The company is already ready to go and has redesigned the app to fit onto a smaller screen. It even made it super easy to link and sync the smartwatches and smartphones together so users can route from their smartphones and follow the directions on the wrist gadget. The app is complimented with the Gear S’s added features such as GPS, turn-by-turn navigation, offline use and public transit directions.
The HERE Maps app should be here next month along with the Gear S. With the app, Tizen smartwatches don’t seem to bad of an idea!
