Google’s next entry into its popular Nexus device line, the Nexus 6, seems to be coming out of the closet with all the leaks we’re getting. The Nexus6 is turning out to be an Android fanboy’s dream with Google finally working together with Motorola to bring the device to consumers. The Nexus 6 is also looking to be Google’s first foray into Phablet territory with rumours suggesting that the device will indeed have a 5.92-inch QuadHD screen. In addition, the phablet will also be coming with a beastly Qualcomm Snapdragon 805 processor backed by 3GB of RAM and 32GB on board storage.
The latests leaks of the Nexus 6 give us a look at what the device is going to look like. It appears that Motorola isn’t steering far from its already ubiquitous design language which we’ve become used to thanks to their Flagship Moto X as well as their lower end Moto G and Moto E. Renders from Droid Life give us an inkling of what the device might look like and it seems like Motorola’s logo isn’t going anywhere when it comes to the Nexus 6. The Nexus line of devices have previously been known for minimising manufacturer branding and, while this will definitely be a first for the Nexus line, there are rumours that Google may include a fingerprint scanner as well into the device.
We also have a glimpse of the Nexus 6 being mocked up and compared to a Nexus 4 and a Nexus 7. The mock up in this case was a wooden mock up based on leaked information, which if true will apparently result in a massive device. Although, Motorola is known to be able to fit big things into small containers such as the display of the newly released Moto X which measures 5.2-inches but is in a near bezelless body makes the device even more “palmable” than most 5.2-inch devices.
Something that seems to be inconsistent in the leaks is the actual size of the device. The wooden mock up shows a humungous device while the actual photos are hinting that the 6.0-inch device may be smaller than we think. Although, it’s good to note that the photos don’t give us much detail when it comes to size comparison. However, the device does indeed fit very snugly into the users hands.
There are also leaks regarding the specifications of the device thanks to GeekBench. The leaked specifications show that the Motorola Shamu, or the Nexus 6, will be coming with a 2.65 GHz Quad Core Qualcomm processor, likely the Snapdragon 805 with 2970 MB of RAM and will be coming with Android L. This coincides with rumoured specifications.
In release details, we have some leaks pointing to a plausible release in October, next week to be exact. Rumours are pointing to an announcement event on the 15th or 16th of October – a date that is becoming increasingly crowded with launch rumours. However, more interesting is a new rumour that the Nexus 6 is headed to Verizon. This comes as an unprecedented move as Google opted to stay away from carriers after the release of the Samsung Galaxy Nexus as it resulted in the manufacturing of about 3 different variants of the device and also resulted in a lot of fragmentation when it came to Android Updates and support from the developer community. Verizon has also been quite the thorn in Google’s side with rollouts of their devices with Verizon subscribers having problems with their LTE connectivity last year after trying to connect with their Nexus 7 devices.
This bodes well for Malaysia as the last time we got an official release of a Nexus phone was the Samsung made Galaxy Nexus and from the looks of it, we may indeed see an official release of the Motorola made Nexus 6.
Will you be picking up the Nexus 6 when it releases or is it way too big for your liking?
Update: Added leaked specifications.
