[MWC2018] Nokia 6: Midrange Performance, Flagship Durability
The Nokia 6 was one of the first smartphones that HMD unveiled last year. The device embodied all of Nokia’s tennets with durability and performance. It also signalled the return of a well-loved brand to a completely revolutionised market. This year at the Mobile World Congress, HMD Global announced a refresh to the Nokia6.
The New Nokia 6 carries a lot from its predecessor. It is still crafted from a single block of 6000 series aluminium. It also carries the signature two tone annodisation that we’ve grown to love on the previous Nokia 6. The new iteration of the Nokia 6 also has the built-in durability of the original; and is able to handle the everyday knocks. The aluminium body is complemented with 2.5D Corning® Gorilla® Glass for added protection.
With all those similarities, what does the New Nokia 6 bring to the table? Well, the first thing you’ll definitely notice is the decreased size of the overall device. Another big difference is the inclusion ZEISS optics into the device. The final obvious change is the jump to USB-C on the device. The Nokia 6 also joins the Android One programme which guarantees timely updates and support.
Same Overall Design Packed with Even More Power for Performance
Most of the upgrades, however, are under the beautifully crafted exterior. The new Nokia 6 will be shipping with Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 630 processor with with 3GB or 4GB of RAM and either 32GB or 64GB of internal storage. You can expand the storage with a microSD card with up to 128GB of additional storage.
The screen is a 5.5-inch IPS LCD with a Full HD resolution of 1920×1080 pixels. This gives it a pixel density of 403 pixels per inch. It will also have Corning Gorilla Glass protection and 450 nits brightness with 1500:1 contrast ratio.
When it comes to the ZEISS optics equipped cameras, the New Nokia 6 comes with 16-megapixel main sensor. This sensor has a 1.0µm pixel size and an f/2.0 aperture. It’s also equipped with Phase Detection Autofocus (PDAF) and a dual tone flash. On the other hand, the front facing camera is an 8-megapixel fixed focus sensor with a 1.12µm pixel size. It has an f/2.0 aperture with an 84° field of view.
In addition to this, the New Nokia 6 comes with a 4G LTE connectivity. It also supports WiFi 802.11 b/g/n/ac and Bluetooth 5.0 as well as GPS, AGPS and GLONASS. It also has FM Radio support. As mentioned before, the New Nokia 6 makes the jump to USB Type-C wuth OTG support. It will be equipped with ambient light, proximity, accelerometer, e-compass, gyro, hall and fingerprint sensors. It is also Near Field Communications (NFC) enabled.
That said, the Nokia 6, doesn’t come dual front firing speakers. It comes with a single speaker with a smart amplifier. It also supports Nokia’s spatial audio capture with its 2 built-in mics.
Pricing and Availability
The New Nokia 6 will be retailing at €279 (RM1,343.48). It’ll be available in Black/Copper, White/Iron and Blue/Gold. HMD announced that it will hit retail in April 2018.
