The PureView brand was one of Nokia’s most prominent brands even when the company was making Windows Phone devices. However, the brand seemed to have been lost in the transition from Windows to Android – until now. Taking focus on the cameras once again, HMD Global has unveiled their first PureView device with five – yep. You read that right, 5 – ZEISS sensors: the Nokia 9 PureView.
The Nokia 9 PureView is HMD’s take on bringing a better camera experience to their phones. The new Quintuple camera array combines two RGB sensors with three Monochrome sensors which HMD claims will give the camera even better performance overall and allow the cameras to have industry leading low light performance. The two RGB sensors are 12-megapixel sensors with an f/1.8 aperture and 1.25µm pixel size with autofocus. The three monochrome sensors share similar specifications.
The new Quintuple camera array developed in collaboration with ZEISS and Light, takes a simultaneous shot with all 5 cameras when the shutter is triggered. That said, the imaging co-processor is also able to instruct the cameras independently. The complete array delivers 60-megapixels worth of imaging data to the processors. This can go up to 240-megapixels under the right conditions. According to HMD Global, the Nokia 9 PureView is the first smartphone that fully utilises Qualcomm 845 mobile platform. Image processing uses the image signal processor (ISP), the digital signal processor (DSP), CPU and GPU for 3x faster noise reduction and 10x lower power consumption.
The quintuple camera array can also deliver 12.4 stop high dynamic range (HDR) and delivers a full view depth map of 12-megapixels across the entire scene with 1200 layers. This allows for the generation of an infinite amount of depth layers ranging from 7cm to 40 metres. The Nokia 9 Pureview also brings back raw image capture in .dng format. This will allow photographers to preserve the image data from their pictures for post processing.
To fully take advantage of this, HMD Global has partnered with Adobe to develop a unique camera profile for the Nokia 9 PureView. The company has also partnered with Google to enable efficient processing of the imaging data for refocusing.
The triple monochrome sensors allow an increased amount of detail to be captured in low light. It is able to create “truly atmospheric black and white pictures”. This is done through image fusion with the imaging data collected from the monochrome sensors.
The quintuple camera array is complemented by a single 20-megapixel sensor with 1.0µm pixel size.
Power Packed Specifications
The Nokia 9 PureView isn’t all about the camera. The smartphone comes with flagship class specifications which allows it to process all the imaging data and be your go to smartphone. The Nokia 9 PureView runs on a Qualcomm Snapdragon 845 octacore processor. This is complemented 6GB of RAM and 128GB of UFS 2.1 internal memory.
On the display side of things, it comes with a 5.99-inch Quad HD+ (QHD+) pOLED panel with Nokia PureDisplay technology. The Nokia 9 PureView supports WiFi 802.11 a/b/g/n/ac with MIMO for better WiFi connectivity and Bluetooth 5.0. It can utilise GPS, A-GPS, GLONASS, and BeiDou location services and supports near field communication (NFC).
The Nokia 9 PureView comes with an under display fingerprint sensor; joining the ranks of this years flagships. It is also IP67 water resistant. All of this is powered by a 3,320mAh battery with fast charging support.
