Today (20th of May, 2014), Microsoft would be having a “small gathering” that would revolve around Microsoft’s very own slate device, the Microsoft Surface. The Microsoft Surface, currently sitting at its second incarnation (Microsoft Surface 2/Pro 2) has been so far a popular table talk device. Meaning; plenty of people talking, plenty of interest on the device, very popular discussion topics, plenty of awareness of the device, but poor sales. Despite that the Surface, considered a benchmark device for all the Windows tablets out there currently in the market is really a device full of potential as we know it.
As mentioned the event later today focuses on the poorly sold but highly potential Microsoft Surface. As the pundits analysed it, Microsoft, unlike other brands doesn’t release devices on an annual gap basis. The gap of release between the Microsoft Surface and Microsoft Surface 2 was about 10 months apart. In that light, there is a high possibility that Microsoft would release the the Microsoft Surface Pro 3 in the event itself. Furthermore Microsoft may have accidentally confirmed that by releasing information regarding the Windows 8.1 saying that an added software feature that “adds support to the Surface Pro 3 Camera” showing that the benchmark Windows device has been in the works.
Another thing that is in the rumor mill is that Microsoft may be looking to release a smaller version of the Surface 2. The trend of a smaller more compact tablet form in 7-8 inches range is gaining popularity and have been a preferred choice for a while now among users. Microsoft surely have noticed this trend and there were rumors talking about Microsoft considering a smaller version of the Microsoft Surface, probably somewhere in the 8-inches range, makes plenty of sense. Except that there were no further information on the stated device for a while after that. Recently though some leaks shed some light on what the smaller Surface would be like. For starters the name Mini might stick on, making the name of the device – Microsoft Surface Mini. Some people speculated that this smaller version might sport an intel processor and run a full Windows 8 (or 8.1 for that matter), most recently though some sources says that Microsoft would push out the RT version of the Windows and most probably pop in an ARM processor instead of an Intel one in the hood of this device. Some unconfirmed reports says also that the Mini Surface might lose the iconic kickstand featured on its bigger brothers.
Apart from these two devices, there are plenty of rumours going around saying that other Surface devices would be released on the event. We are speculating that they could release the Surface 3 and Pro 3 with more options and in multiple configurations alongside the Mini. We also hope that the Microsoft Surface Mini, if announced would come in a Pro version sporting a full Windows 8.1 and an Intel processor because it will just be an awesome handheld device in our heads. We don’t know for sure what’s coming during the event. What we do know is that we would be covering the event through their livestream and be updating you through a liveblog! Watch out for it later today at about 8.00 p.m. Malaysian Time (+08:00 GMT).
