Cyanogen in the Android world is not a new name. In fact it has been always the Mod to go to for any Android tinkerers especially when you have a Nexus device in hand. It is a household name in the world of custom ROMs for Android. They also now have been tied in with manufacturers in the market like Oppo in their N1 smartphone and OnePlus in their ‘Flagship Killer’ One. Both devices are impressive devices and cost a fraction of their competition. With the tie-ins too Cyanogen’s name is nothing new in manufacturer partnerships.
Micromax may not be a familiar name in the households of Malaysia but in India, it is a widely recognised name and it is second to Samsung in terms of market share. Not a bad achievement when you are in a country with over 1.2 billion strong population. Micromax is also a manufacturing partner with Android in the Android One project. This lead the assumption to the interest that Android One has in the market potential that India poses.
Recently Google actually offered to buy Cyanogen but Cyanogen refused. It is obvious that Google would like to get their hands on what Cyanogen have access to and the technologies that developers from Cyanogen can create. With the refusal though there are certain raised tensions between Google and Cyanogen. With that being said though it does not hinder Micromax, an Android One partner from forming an allegiance with Cyanogen to create a smartphone specifically for the Indian market. What kind of smartphone can they come up with together? We have not idea yet but it is an intriguing piece of news we have here. With Cyanogen making a move with the Android One partner, it will be more interesting to see how Google will respond to this now.
