It was a good year this 2014 for Chinese smartphone manufacturers in Malaysia. Shipments for these companies tripled in the first part of the year and it seems the top three victorious were Lenovo, Xiaomi and Oppo.
With success, comes some hardship for competitors. With the Chinese companies doing well, non-China manufacturers might have seen a little drop. Towards the second half of the year though, the drop became worse with companies such as Samsung and Apple seeing shipments cut in half. IDC has said not only are people looking more to Chinese mid range smartphones, many of the Malaysians are well, not looking to buy a new handset.
We’re expecting to see the trend continue in 2015 as more affordable smartphones get churned out and shipped into Malaysia which comes from Chinese manufacturers. Consumer preferences basically have switched from high end premium smartphones to more budget friendly gadgets. It doesn’t help Samsung and Apple that the mid range smartphones are getting a better spec sheet as well.
Well, with competition on the rise, we’re hoping as consumers we benefit the best. It should be a price battle next year and hence, making it a much more affordable market for us.
