Lazada Survey Reveals Malaysians are Shopping Online for Raya due to Increased Living Costs
Malaysians are bargain hunters. We look for items we want and we hunt for the best prices. With the recent increase in the costs of living, this bargain hunting has become a crucial skill especially during the festive seasons like Hari Raya.
It comes as no surprise that many Malaysians have since turned to online shopping to make more educated purchases and get better deals. Lazada recently conducted a survey which showed that 70% of Malaysian have increased their online shopping frequency in 2017 compared to 2016. In this survey of 550 Malaysians, Lazada also noted that while shopping online has increased, Malaysian are still feeling the pinch from the increased cost of living. In fact, 66% of respondents noted that they need to increase their expenditure for Hari Raya this year.
Malaysians are last minute shoppers; there’s no denying that. Malls get packed with people wanting to get their outfits and essentials for Hari Raya. In fact, the Lazada survey shows that 45% of the respondents opted to make their purchases two weeks before Hari Raya. This sharply contrasted the 36% who opt to do their shopping a month in advance. A mere 3% of respondents said they shopped 3 months ahead while only 4% shopped more than 3 months in advance. However, it’s interesting to note that most of the respondents reported that they began saving for the festive season earlier on.
Perhaps a more interesting point to note is the buying trends that are prominent in the Lazada survey. Of the 550 Malaysian surveyed, 83% were focused on purchasing apparel and accessories among other essential items for the Raya celebrations. 73% of respondents were also purchasing items such as baking essentials, beverages and groceries.
With motivators such as convenience, accessibility and competitive prices, it comes as no surprise that online shopping platforms such as Lazada are increasingly becoming the go-to destination for Malaysian shoppers.

In conjunction with the Raya celebrations, Lazada launched their Riang Ria Raya Campaign which has kicked off on the 19th of May and will continue until the 30th of June. The campaign brings discounts of up to 90% on items such as Hari Raya apparel, groceries, foodstuff, drinks, beauty products, selected gadgets among others.
“Since the start of the campaign, we’ve observed the top 3 categories purchased by Malaysians during this period includes home & living, groceries and fashion products – proof that online shopping is becoming part and parcel of our lives.-Hans-Peter Ressel, CEO of Lazada Malaysia
Lazada also announced the launch of their Lazada TV platform 3 weeks ago which aims to make online shopping more engaging by providing live social content from brands. The platform has seen an impressive 110% viewership growth in that time.
