Did you know that Kaspersky is already 20 years old? Us? We asked you. Of course we knew.
It did not feel like 20 years though. The existence of Kaspersky started out in 1997 as a cyber security solutions provider. They started out at the time of the boom of the internet generation. Interestingly though they started out at a time where cyber security was not a huge topic. Of course cyber security at the time was still at its infancy and people all over the internet is still figuring out what to do with the web and how they can exploit it.
20 years on and cyber security is becoming a front and center topic. The importance of cyber security today, compared to 20 years ago is immense. Plenty of organisations these days spend plenty to get their system digital and making them as secure as possible. The security part though is essential these days for not only the corporate world but for us users as well.
As technology progresses, so is our vulnerability. Especially since the boom in smartphone adoption in the last five years. According to a survey conducted by MCMC, Malaysia’s authority on communications and multimedia, Malaysia’s smartphone adoption percentage grew from 68.7% to more than three-quarters of the Malaysian population in 2017. Out of those users, 28.4% of them does e-commerce activities and more than half of them do it on their mobile devices. The survey also highlighted the dependency we have on our smartphones these days; it is like we cannot live without them.
With the amount of data we put in our smartphones also the concern over security is higher than before. The amount of threats are not helping either. Kaspersky found that our mobile devices are vulnerable to more than half a million ransomware trojans, and nearly a 100,000 banking trojans and counting; mostly to Android users alarmingly. If you want to read more about it you can do it here.
Of course Kaspersky does have a solution for it though. If you look through the Google Play Store you would find a Kaspersky Internet Security for Android devices. It goes f or MYR45 per year for one device. Of course you can buy more if you have more devices.
As we have pointed out earlier Kaspersky has been doing this for 20 years. To celebrate that milestone they are going to try to break Malaysia’s Record in the Most Number of Anti-Virus for Mobile Devices Activated in an Event. To break that record Kaspersky would need 1,500 downloads of Mobile Internet Security on Android and Password Manager on iOS. How? They are giving these products out for free of course. If you have not secured your mobile device yet, you should really consider doing it tomorrow (5th June, 2018) at Yum Yum Cafe in Tunku Abdul Rahman University Main Campus, Kuala Lumpur. The event starts at 10.00 a.m. and ends at 4.00 p.m. so you can head there any time. If you wish to be a part of history, this is your chance. Remember you are getting your smartphone secured for free too; it is a win-win situation here.
