Jolla has been an anomaly in the mobile space finding success where a lot established companies have struggled. The small Finnish start up released its first mobile device, a smartphone, about a year ago. The company started by announcing their own operating system (OS), the SailFish OS which has been quite well received. Their unique smartphone design also contributed to their success. Not to mention the many improvements that they have made to their OS over the year that it was released it device.
Jolla is now taking a new step into unknown territory; bringing their OS to a larger slate – the Jolla Tablet. The tablet which will retail for USD$ 249 (MYR 838) has been listed on the crowdfunding platform Indiegogo since November 19. The tablet will be coming with a 7.85-inch LCD with a resolution of 2048 x 1536 pixels – similar to that of the iPad mini 3 and the Nexus 9. It will be powered by a 64-bit quad core Intel processor clocked at 1.8GHz with 2GB of RAM and 32GB of internal storage with microSD card expandability. The Jolla tablet will also be coming with a 5-MegaPixel camera and a 2-MegaPixel front facing camera. All of these features will be powered by a 4300mAh battery in a 203 x 137 x 8.3mm body weighing only 384g.
The Jolla tablet will be launching with Jolla’s own Sailfish OS 2.0 and is expected to reach consumers by May 2015. In the meantime, Jolla wants to hear from supporters what features they would like to see come with the upcoming Jolla Tablet.
Indiegogo supporters are able to get the tablet at a hefty discount with supporter packages starting at USD$ 189 (MYR 635) with a USD$ 20 (MYR 64) shipping fee. The Indiegogo campaign has hit USD$ 1.3 million (MYR 4.36 million) a whopping 323% of its initial USD$ 380, 000 (MYR 1,273,950) goal as of this writing.
