iPad Air 2: What You Need to Know
With the Apple event happening tomorrow, it’s essential that you get up to date with all the latest leaks before streaming in live for the October 16th event.
First off, the iPad Air 2 seems to be the thinnest tablet in the world according to the Michael Report. The tablet is set to be 0.5 mm thinner than the current gen Air tablet. This has been made possible with the removal of the hardware mute/rotation lock switch that’s been found on the left-hand side of every iPad to date. Relocated microphones and recessed volume buttons also supposedly help with the thickness-cutting measures. There will also be no 16GB variant for the iPad Air 2. Hence, you will only be able to get device with 32, 64, and 128GB options.
Next, the leaked image above shows that Apple is apparently giving the iPad Air 2 an upgrade in RAM by ordering brand new 2GB Elpida RAM modules allegedly for the device. The parts being sourced from a firm call GeekBar. We aren’t sure about the validity for the image but this does tally with rumours that the device is set to receive more RAM this time around.
In addition, Apple may just be including a “2-in-1 combo” of iOS and OS X being integrated in the iPad Air 2 though this seems like a far-fetched theory for the moment. We’re thinking on the lines of the tech giant is still experimenting with an integration or a hybrid of the operating systems.
The Michael Report has included rumours that the iPad Air 2 will be sporting recessed volume buttons, a redesigned speaker grille, and a microphone hole relocated near the rear camera. The site further predicted the inclusion of an upgraded A8 processor, an 8-megapixel camera, support for Touch ID and Apple Pay. Below you will see a video courtesy of Vietnamese site Tinhte.vn, using a dummy unit of the iPad Air 2. The specs seem to add up to what we’ve heard so far. This leads us to ask – how close is this dummy unit to the real thing? Is this what the device will look like?
On the inner hardware of the iPad Air 2, the leaks are pointing to an inclusion of Touch ID functionality. The image below is the alleged home button flex cable appears to contain a space for a Touch ID home button, complete with the stainless steel ring. This may just be the proof we needed to validate the Touch ID rumour. The second image below is the logic board image which shows what may be Apple’s A8 processor along with RAM chips and other components. The logic board also appears to contain a noticeably different layout when compared to the board from last year’s iPad Air.
Next, we have the volume control flex cable that points to the the up and down volume buttons and a microphone. This may be a piece of evidence proving that Apple has decided to move away from the mute/screen rotation switch as a way to make the iPad Air 2 even thinner.
Lastly in terms of hardware, we have the front panel of the iPad Air 2 as seen above. The leaks displays a more prolonged connector on its side and contains cutouts for the Touch ID home button and FaceTime HD camera.
The Retina iPad Mini 2 is rumoured to also be launching alongside the iPad Air 2 tomorrow but the details on the device has been few and far in between. The Retina iPad mini 2 is rumored to include only a Touch ID fingerprint sensor and the A8 processor, as compared to the iPad Air 2, which may ship with a more powerful A8X processor, 2GB of RAM, Touch ID, a new gold color option, and more.
