Instagram, the photo sharing app known all over the world for being the social media tycoon that connects users through photos has kept to its word. Instagram warned us that it was going to do some major account clean up and that it did do!
Instagram has gotten rid of millions of spam accounts and this move might not have sat well with some of the legitimate users. Many of those angered are of course, users who have lost quite a number of followers. The action by the company has been called the “Instagram Rapture”.
Just like Facebook, Instagram does routine clean up of accounts to limit spam and to prevent users from buying followers to appear more popular. The users that have suffered the most from the purge are not surprisingly, celebrities.
Rapper Akon lost 56% of his followers while Justin Bieber lost an astounding 3,538,228 followers overnight. One account, chiragchirag78 lost 99% of his followers and was eventually, deleted off himself. Developer Zach Allia says this is the most accounts ever deleted by Instagram and it just teaches everyone a lesson; don’t buy users and spamming is so overrated.
While some reacted negatively, most are having a positive reaction to the Instagram cleansing. It just makes it safer and a more honest consumer experience.
