When ASUS’s Design Centre Vice President Mitch Yang walked on the stage, it was the moment we were all waiting for – the ZEN Watch. The device is a ASUS’s first smartwatch from the Android Wear platform. It was designed to make us want to wear it with its sleek, stylish and fashion friendly design.
The device is made of stainless steel and has ergonomic curves which shows the craftsmanship of a timeless mechanical watch. It alludes elegant sophistication with its classic style which is suitable for all occasions. Weighing only 75 grams, the ZEN Watch is ASUS’s definition of a smartwatch designed with precision.
The device is available in silver and rose gold colour layering with a brown leather strap. The strap is made of Italian leather and has comfort as its main aim.
The smartwatch features a curved Corning Gorilla glass 2.5D display that makes it easy to swipe from page to page on the device. In addition, the display is an AMOLED 1.63 inch 278ppi touch display. The gadget runs on Qualcomm® Snapdragon™ 400 processor with 1.2GHz CPU and has 5.1MB of RAM mated with 4GB EMMC storage.
The ZEN watch is equipped with Bluetooth 4.0 and Micro USB with a charging cradle. There is a built in microphone as well as a 9 Axis sensor and Bio sensor. The device is powered by a polymer 1.4Wh battery. It is furthermore, water resistant with IP55 certification.
The most exciting part of the ZEN Watch is the features it has. The first is that it works exclusively with ZEN UI which makes it a smart companion. The gadget has a schedule manager driven by its smart notification feature. You will never forget an appointment or date with this smartwatch. The watch is also equipped with an unlock system which automatically unlocks your smartphone through your ZEN watch. There is in addition, a remote triggering camera that enables users to find the perfect shot.
One of the most useful app the ZEN Watch is equipped with Tap Tap. Tap Tap is a feature that helps you locate your phone via the ZEN Watch by just two taps. Once you tap your watch, your phone will ring, hence enabling you to find it. We tend to leave our phones everywhere more often than we choose to admit. And that’s why this particular app seems the most appealing to us due to its practicality in usage.
Users can also mute incoming calls by merely covering the display of the ZEN Watch. The gadget is equipped with Google Maps, a to do list, a wellness manager and a relaxation monitor that can track your heart beat. Not to forget, the device is topped off with a presentation control. This enables users to control slides via their smartwatch during a presentation. It makes it so easy to move from slide to slide with a single swipe on the display of the device.
All of this in one small package! And it is quite affordable compared to the other smartwatches. The ZEN Watch is priced at €199 (USD$258/RM819). I have to admit I am quite impressed with what ASUS has managed to put out. Whether it can beat its competitors like the iWatch and Moto 360 is still doubtful. But, from what I see, ASUS could easily get a good amount of interested buyers with this device!
