Hackers duplicate fingerprints from images
According to VentureBeat, a bunch of hackers known as the Chaos Computer Club (CCC) has proven that it was able to get user’s fingerprints directly from images that show any user’s fingers. According to the CCC, it has even tried its method on Germany’s defense minister, Ursula Von Der Leyen. The CCC thankfully have not been able to crack the systems on the fingerprint readers on devices such as the Galaxy S5 or iPhone 6.
The CCC is the group responsible for previously cracking Apple’s fingerprint system using an un-smudged print from the owner’s finger. However, the hackers needed a thousand dollars worth of equipment to complete its mission and more than 30 hours of man power working time. This should ease any anxiety of everyday users.
Nevertheless, this isn’t much to worry about. Even if the CCC could grab fingerprints, it won’t be as easy to crack the fingerprint ID user system such as Touch ID. And since the news has gone to Apple and Samsung, the companies should have a team working on making the unlock system much more bullet proof.
