Cyanogen-powered Micromax YU to Launch in India
Micromax has announced the launch of its new, Cyanogen OS powered device, the YU on December 18th.
Micromax has long been rumored to be collaborating with Cyanogen to produce a device together and it looks like it is finally happening with the Micromax YU. The Indian electronics giants have released invites requesting recipients to “block” the date 18th of December, for the launch event. The invite itself does not give much away apart from the use of curious terms such as “Play God” and strange letters. A perceptive few have noted that the triangle and circle in the “Play God” phrase is reminiscent of the buttons seen in the Android Lollipop interface. Although it may be a stretch, it is possible that Cyanogen’s ROM for this device will be based on Lollipop.
There is very little information going around regarding the specifications of the Micromax YU. Micromax co-founder Rahul Sharma however has hinted that the device will have some powerful specifications, claiming that “the phone is going to be a monster”. If not exaggerated, we expect the device to be something similar to a XiaoMi or, more optimistically, a OnePlus One; low-cost with high-end specifications. He also mentioned the importance of an impressive OS as it would help “an inexpensive device seem like a much more premium-level device”.
As far as sales are concerned, Micromax looks to be adopting an online-exclusive strategy, similar to that of XiaoMi. It will be interesting to see how the Micromax YU will fare in the Indian market. It is perhaps one of the largest markets in Asia let alone the world, making it very appealing. However, competition is rife as OnePlus One has just begun retailing and even XiaoMi has made a foothold here on top of the already established Samsung. With its Cyanogen OS powered device and powerful specs, Micromax looks to standout in one of the most lucrative markets of today.
