Check Activation Lock with Apple’s new tool
A new Activation Lock Status tool has been released by Apple to make it easier for anyone to buy a used iPhone, iPad or iPod touch to avoid getting a device that is locked. The Activation Lock Status Checker is accessible through iCloud.com and enables users to enter a Device IMEI or serial number to check whether a product has the Activation Lock turned on.
The Activation Lock feature was introduced with iOS 7 to prevent Apple devices from being stolen. It has effectively led to many iPhone thefts being avoided in major cities, However, the down side to this feature is that the iOS device is completely useless unless it gets unlocked by the original owner. This makes it hard to buy used Apple devices from other users who want to sell it.
With the new tool, anyone purchasing the used iOS device can ensure the device is usable by checking via the tool. The Activation Lock Status tool will give the user a clear warning that an Apple ID and password is required if the device is to be activated. In addition, the tool instructs the potential new owner how to remove Activation Lock from the device but that requires contacting the previous owner. Hence, theft is still avoided and scams from selling locked Apple devices shouldn’t be an issue as well.
