OPPO has been known for its budget friendly, value-for-money devices. Over the years also, they have been known as photography masters with their devices. Okay, they have not been topping the photography benchmarks until now with the OPPO Find X2 Pro. Still, we have always liked and OPPO budget smartphone. We like their entry-level and mid-range offers because they are actually quality products. They are well made, and they work well for what you are paying. They feel optimised.
Smartphones have gotten more expensive these days. This is
also consistent with OPPO’s offerings over the years. Occasionally though, there
is a device that just goes back to basics. For OPPO, that device is the OPPO
A91 that is just launched today.
No, there is no big launch gambit. If you are not updated
just yet, Malaysia is now under lock down order from the government. Non-essential
services and businesses are supposed to be closed and we are all force to work
from home. Thank goodness for the Internet.
The OPPO A91 is a basic entry-level device at MYR 999. Despite
the price though, it looks like a premium OPPO device. It is finished on both
sides with glass, so it will also feel premium. If other smartphones from OPPO
is any indication, the OPPO A91 should be a quality hardware too.
There is nothing to shout about when it comes to its processing
power, a MediaTek Helio P70 Octa-core System on a Chip (SoC). It is what you
commonly find on budget smartphones. It is still an adequately powerful SoC
though. You get 8GB of RAM and 128GB of storage too, which is quite plenty for
the price you pay.
Those things power up the Android 9.1 based ColorOS 6.1
projected to a 6.4-inch display. No, not a 720P HD display. You get a Full HD+
AMOLED display protected underneath a Gorilla Glass 5. You even get an
in-display fingerprint sensor. All of this is powered by a 4,025 mAh battery
that also comes with VOOC 3.0 charging to fully charge your device from an
empty battery to full in an hour.
The biggest upsell of the OPPO A91 though is its camera. You
do not only get two lenses, not even three. You get four lenses point out the
back of the device. It features a 48-Megapixel main shooter that is partnered
with an 8-Megapixel ultra-wide angle lens, 2-Megapixel monochrome sensor, and a
2-Megapixel depth sensor. No telephoto lens to be found here. The ultra-wide
lens can focus and capture images from a minimum distance of 3cm.
The camera software packs the usual AI beauty mode or AI scenes
for an optimised photo. You also get the Night Portrait mode in this device for
all your low-light shoots. Video is steadier than ever with the built-in Electronic
Image Stabilisation (EIS).
The OPPO A91 entry-level smartphone is available now for MYR
999 on OPPO’s official stores on Shopee
and Lazada.
From now to 26th of March, the OPPO A91 is now on sale for only MYR
899. Of course, terms and conditions apply.
Malaysia is on lock down order. Well, more like a partial lock down. All the paperwork calls it is a ‘restricted movement’ order. All non-essential services and businesses are order to close, or all its staff are supposed to work from home. This is fine for businesses like ours, with all our contents and services being digital and online. We can easily work from home. But businesses like car service centers, manufacturing of goods, shops, and even restaurants are going to be affected.
Well, in a broader sense, restaurants and food outlets can operate
under the circumstance that it only does takeaway orders. Supermarkets, hospitals
and clinics, broadcasting, police stations, and fire services are still open.
Some of them on a limited capacity too (not hospitals, they are front lining
the COVID-19 situation. To that, thank you to all doctors and nurses who are
working tirelessly).
Instead of the whole mess of a launch gambit and roadshows
all over Malaysia and its countless malls, OPPO is starting their first sale
gambit with nothing but a simple service of delivering the devices right to
your doorstep. Obviously, you would have to buy one of it to get the device
sent to you.
The OPPO Find X2 Pro 5G, to recap, is one of OPPO’s flagships that is launched this year to replace the now two years old OPPO Find X. The OPPO Find X2 Pro 5G, as its name indicates, packs 5G readiness from its Qualcomm Snapdragon 865 System on a Chip (SoC). It is also OPPO’s most powerful device to date with 12GB of RAM and 256GB of on-board storage. Its camera is supposed to be the best camera ever on a smartphone, topping the charts of DX0Mark with its 48-Megapixel main camera flanked by a 48-Megapixel ultra-wide angle lens and a 13-Megapixel lens.
Unlike the OPPO Find X, the X2 and X2 Pro does not have a motorised
pop-up mechanism. That also means you are not getting a full edge-to-edge display
like the FullView display of the OPPO Find X. Instead, you get something they
call an O1 Ultra Vision display with a 32-Megapixel camera punch hole on the
6.7-inch AMOLED display. It pushes out QHD+ at up to 120Hz. That may take a
toll on its 4,260 mAh battery. With 65W SuperVOOC charging though, there is
nothing to fear, especially in this lockdown anyway.
The OPPO Find X2 Pro 5G is available for pre-order now for
MYR 4,599 until 20rd March 2020. Devices should start shipping to
customers the day after. The device will be available in two finishes – Ceramic
Black and Vegan Leather Orange.
All pre-order customers are entitled for a free VOOC powerbank,
1-year extended warranty, and 3 months of screen protection. Of course, you must
make full payment before the 18th of April to secure their free
gifts. If you made your full payment before the 23rd of March, you
are also entitled to a free OPPO Enco Free True Wireless Earbuds worth MYR 599
(review coming soon). On top of all the free gifts, OPPO will be offering an MYR
200 voucher to be used in OPPO’s official web store. Of course, you have to
spend more than MYR 200 to use the voucher. Additionally, if you have made your
pre-order and committed the booking fee of MYR 300 at any OPPO’s offline store,
you are entitled to an MYR 300 digital code to make your full payment; in other
words you are getting MYR 300 off your OPPO Find X2 Pro 5G. Of course, terms
and conditions apply. More information on OPPO’s website.
The war between gaming consoles are about to start again. It
is the new generation of consoles that are going to be involved in the fight. Microsoft’s
new Xbox Series X, and Sony’ brand new PlayStation 5 that was just about teased
last night (in Malaysia’s time).
We would elaborate specifically on the Microsoft Xbox Series
X, but they are not actually available officially in Malaysia. So, we would do
a hard pass on that and focus on the Sony PlayStation 5, which will be
available in Malaysia and most parts of the world. We are also PlayStation
users, currently on the PlayStation 4 Pro; needless to say, we are quite
excited about PlayStation 5 (PS5) launching at the end of 2020.
The announcement last night was called ‘The Road to PS5’. That
is Sony’s way of saying also that this is not technically an unveiling of the new
hardware, rather a glimpse of what we can expect the new hardware to pack. We
have seen renders here and there of the PS5, but there is no definite shape of
it just yet. Sony is doing a good job in keeping mums about it too. All we know
though; we can expect it to look quite different from Xbox’s boxy tower design
language.
Despite not talking about design, we can sort of understand
the challenges when it comes to designing a console. They’ve elaborated on the
main challenge of designing a gaming console with ultra-powerful processors too
– cooling and powering them. If you really think about it, this was also an
issue in the early days of the PS4. This issue is not even native to Sony’s console,
it is a concern for almost any powerful gaming rigs. We will get to cooling and
power supply a little later though.
For now, we get to the meat of this content – the specs of
the PS5. Here it is; It is packing a lot of power from a AMD Ryzen Zen 2 architecture
CPU. That AMD processor will come with 8 cores, 16 threads, and will clock at up
to 3.5GHz. Sony says that the processor will run at about 3.5GHz most of the
time by default. At this point you might start looking up at the Xbox and find
that the Xbox runs faster at 3.8GHz. They are running on the same CPU, so why
is the one on Xbox more powerful? All I can say for now is ‘power supply’ and ‘cooling’.
Then there is the GPU, the graphics processor. It clocks at up to 2.23GHz with 36 CUs and is based on AMD’s Radeon RDNA-2 engine. It is supposed to be able to have Ray Tracing Acceleration, and the combination is also supposed to process at 10.3 teraFLOPS. Wait a minute, that is not as powerful as the Xbox with the same RDNA-2 based engine with 52 CUs at 1.825GHz that can do 12 teraFLOPS.
You are absolutely correct in that comparison. From a
hardware standpoint then, the PS5 is quite shorthanded in the fight. They have
the shorter stick compared to the Xbox at this point. We can only speculate as
to why that is, and we are suspecting cooling and power supply to be an issue
too.
On the Sony PS5 you are also getting a larger RAM compared
to before, faster too. It is a 16GB DDR6 RAM that is said to be better
optimised to deliver better game experiences. GDDR6 is of course known for its
speed and the one on the PS5 can go at 448GBps. The PS5 also comes with an
upgraded 825GB drive. It is not a traditional HDD though, it is an SSD this
time that can read at up to 5.5GBps. Also smaller than Xbox’s 1TB SSD.
There is an upside to all these numbers though. For one, it is still a big leap from the PS4; heck even the PS4 Pro. All the hardware means that it can now easily support 120Hz 4K gaming, push itself on 8K TVs (if you can afford one), and they say that it is about 10x faster than the previous generation console. In that, we believe. It is also backward compatible with Sony’s previous PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 4 Pro; what a delight.
There is more, if you can believe it. Where they skim down
in graphics and process handling, they put into something called “Tempest”. For
you Mass Effect fans, calm down. It is not the “Tempest” spaceship we see in Mass
Effect 4: Andromeda (not that great of a game, by the way). It is their latest
3D Audio processing chip; their AudioTech.
In its basic form, it is just another processor that is
lodged inside the PS5, making the new upcoming Sony gaming console effectively
a three-processor system. Its core design is very similar to that of a GPU. Within
the presentation though, Sony seems to give a very big emphasis on audio. They
say that while harnessing processing power for graphics is hard, processing an
audio can be quite complex too. That is the reason they are transforming a GPU
to an APU (Audio Processing Unit).
The idea of using “Tempest” is to create a 3D audio experience
on any platform. To be very fair, PlayStation users would be using the console
in almost all kinds of conditions. The most common would be plugging them to a
generic TV and rely on the TV speakers as their means of audio. There are those
who might spend a little bit more and buy headphones for their console. Then
there are those who has a theatre grade system with 3 or more speakers placed
around them. Sony recognises all of that and wants all of us to get the same
treatment and experience.
We have said before that audio is a very big part of any
gaming, or even movie watching experience. It is not just music. Sound designs
do play a big role in bringing us closer to the whatever intended experience
there may be. Sony knows this too, being one of the big players in high-end
audio. That is why the “Tempest” is born. They utilise something called Head Related
Transfer Function (HRTF) for audio reproduction. You can, of course Google that
term because it is a whole complex audio science in itself. All you need to know
is that the Sony PS5 is going to give you 3D audio wherever you go. We are thinking
of having an editorial specifically on sounds and sound engineering; do comment
and let us know if you are interested.
The presentation ends there though. There are no new renders on the hardware, nor even the controller. We sort of have an idea of how they might look like, but all of us could be wrong. Still, we are optimistic. The slightly less powerful hardware may make the Sony look a like a worse deal than the Xbox, especially when they are rumoured to be about the same price. Still, in Malaysia we are only going to be able to touch the Sony PS5 when they are launched. So we will see. Both are expected to launch sometime later in the year 2020. You can watch the whole announcement after the break.
Smartphones today, especially the flagships, are not what you would call slow. With the current generation of System on a Chip (SoC), RAM, and even eUFS 3.0 storage your smartphones can outperform some entry level notebook PCs. Of course at a price that is even higher than before.
Certain modern flagships, like Samsung’s very own Galaxy S20 line-up packs the latest eUFS 3.0 (embedded Universal Flash Storage). That also means that you get about 300-400MBps in write speed. That also means that if you transfer a 4GB movie file, you can get that done within 10 seconds. a 128GB memory can fill up within 6 minutes or so. Fast? Apparently not fast enough for Samsung.
Samsung is one of the world leaders in digital storage. They have previously broken the limits of what is possible with their 512GB eUFS 3.0 flash memory module. Just right after the launch of the Samsung Galaxy S20 series, Samsung broke their limitations again with their brand new eUFS 3.1 storage module at 512GB size.
It does not sound like a major update, but the eUFS 3.1 can now write at triple the speeds of the previous eUFS 3.0. That also means that you get write speeds at up to 1,200MBps. That is more than 1GBps. That is also faster than any SATA based PC drives at 540MBps. Even your generic microSD card only writes at a maximum speed of 90MBps for crying out loud.
So why do we need a storage that can write faster than anything else you can find in the market? According to Samsung; 8K video capturing, processing, and production. We admit that the Samsung Galaxy S20 line-up’s ability to record videos at 8K resolution is impressive. There is not enough medium at this time that supports 8K contents though. Still, it might be nice to have 8K right in your hands. Even if your smartphone cannot even display at 8K resolution.
Samsung’s eUFS 3.1 will come in three sizes; 512GB, 256GB, 128GB. The flash memory module will begin production at Samsung’s new Xi’an, China production line. The production facility is also Samsung’s largest so far. We might see the eUFS 3.1 in action in Samsung’s upcoming Galaxy Note 20 line-up – fingers crossed.
The Week of March 9th was an eventful one with two big launches, two court cases and multiple events getting cancelled due to the COVID-19 outbreak. OPPO announced the official availability of the Find X2 series in Malaysia with prices starting at MYR3,999. Xiaomi announces the new Redmi Note 9 Pro Series. Apple seems to have cancelled the new iPhone SE 2 amidst the COVID-19 situation while other companies start working from home.

It was only a few months ago in September that Xiaomi launched the Redmi Note 8 Pro. Now the all-new replacement has already been announced. New year, new phone am I right? So how much did it improved in just ten months?
Xiaomi has announced its latest Redmi note 9 pro series consisting of two smartphones: the Redmi Note 9 Pro and Redmi Note 9 Pro Max. The phone has officially been announced in India. The Note 9 Pro and Pro Max is expected to be released on March 17 and March 25 respectively.
For starters, it has dropped the Helio G90T processor from MediaTek and now has adopted the new Snapdragon 720G from Qualcomm. The new Snapdragon 720G unfortunately does not support 5G connectivity, that said, 5G is a premium feature at this point. However, that doesn’t mean that Xiaomi is falling behind, in fact, there are already six phones at the market from Xiaomi and two more on the way that support 5G connectivity.
In the memory department, there will be two variants for the Note 9 Pro and three variants for the Note 9 Pro Max. For the Redmi Note 9 Pro, it starts with 4GB RAM and 64GB internal storage, and caps out with 6GB of RAM and 128GB of storage. The Redmi Note 9 Pro Max, on the other hand, has three variants with 6GB of RAM and 64GB of internal storage, 6GB of RAM and 128GB of storage, and 8GB with 128GB of internal storage. If that isn’t enough, users are able to add up to 1TB of additional memory through the microSD card slot.
Next up, the camera. The Note 9 Pro and Note 9 Pro Max are equipped with a quad-camera system. The Redmi Note 9 Pro comes with a 48-megapixel main camera a slight bump down compared to the 64-megapixel camera that was on the Note 8 Pro. This is paired with an 8-megapixel ultra-wide camera, a 5-megapixel macro camera, and a 2-megapixel depth sensor. The Note 9 Pro Max, comes with a similar set up to the Note 8 Pro with a 64-megapixel main camera, 8-megapixel ultra-wide, a better 5-megapixel instead of the 2 megapixels used on the Note 8 Pro and the same 2-megapixel depth sensor.
The selfie camera of the Note 9 Pro is a 16-megapixel camera while the Note 9 Pro Max gets a huge jump to a 32 megapixel instead.
With the cameras out of the way, we move on to the display. The Note 9 Pro and Note 9 Pro Max come with the same size display at 6.67 inches with a screen-to-body ratio of 84.5%. It has a Corning Gorilla Glass 5 protection and a pixel density of 395 ppi. One disappointment, though, is that the display is still uses LCD technology.
Other goodies the phone includes such as a 3.5mm jack, an infrared sensor, and a side-mounted fingerprint sensor. Apparently, the side-mounted fingerprint sensor is now a new trend. Both phones come with a 5020 mAh battery with an 18W fast charging on the Note 9 Pro while the Note 9 Pro Max comes with an impressive 33W fast charging. There are three colour option of the phone, Aurora Blue, Glacier White, and Interstellar Black.
Pricing and Availability
The Redmi Note 9 Pro will be available starting on March 17, 2020. As mentioned it will have 2 variants: 4GB RAM with 64GB of internal storage and 6GB RAM with 128GB internal storage. The former will retail for INR12,999 (MYR753.13) while the latter will retail at INR15,999 (MYR926.94).
The Redmi Note 9 Pro will be available starting March 25, 2020. It will have 3 variants. The 6GB RAM and 64GB storage variant will be retailing for INR14,999 (MYR869.37); the 6GB RAM and 128GB storage version will be retailing for INR16,999 (MYR985.13); while the 8GB RAM and 128GB storage version will retrail for INR18,999 (MYR1101.04).
In this week’s Tech & Tonic Podcast, we have Jason Goh of @Smashpop! Jason Goh is one of the more prolific figures in the digital content creation industry. He has a vast experience in the field and is one of the guys behind Tricycle TV, a social media channel that focuses on reviewing tech in Bahasa Melayu. He is also very active in Social Media with @Smashpop across all platforms including YouTube, Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter. He is also on TikTok, but not very active; as he says. All good things must be shared, and that is why Jason also conducts workshops for you to better your Social Media presence and skills.
Last week saw one of the most anticipated smartphones (to us anyway) launch globally and in Malaysia. It is the OPPO Find X2 series, a flagship that is two years in waiting now. We had our hands on the OPPO Find X2 as well as Jason with the OPPO Find X2 Pro. We spoke at length about the device; what we like, what we do not like, and what we found interesting. Still, at MYR 3,999 (starting from), it is not what you would call ‘affordable’. Are the features enough to justify its price tag though?
On the subject of smartphones, we revisit the topic of smartphone cameras vs proper cameras. Fitting topic, since we have another very experienced content creator that focuses plenty of visuals. The OPPO Find X2 series also triggers the topic with its claim on topping the DX0Mark charts (OPPO Find X2 Pro). Of course, we would want to know what his opinion is on this subject. We did an editorial on this subject too.
We love watching our TV, we love watching Netflix and Amazon
Prime Video on our TV. Well, that is the best way to enjoy the streaming services
we subscribe to these days. Even YouTube videos can be enjoyed on TV these days.
It beats the small 15-inch displays on your notebook PC. It certainly beats
your 6-inch smartphone display. You get at least 49-inch of goodness pushed
through and in most cases, better audio that your notebook PC. You can even get
soundbars if you really want.
Sony TVs hold a special place in our hearts. That is to say
that we like Sony TVs for their brilliant details and great contrasts. LED TVs
are also known for their vivid colours; which is true for all Sony LED TVs. I
personally have a Sony TV at home and pretty much adores it. I only get to use
it in the weekends though, sadly.
Still, the Sony Bravia line-up in Malaysia just got even
better with the new Sony Bravia X80H (KD-X8000H) line-up. Prices start from MYR
3,099 and goes all the way to MYR 9,699. Sizes available would be 49-inch
(49X8000H), 55-inch (55X8000H @ MYR 3,799), 65-inch (65X8000H @ MYR 5,399), and
75-inch (75X8000H). The TVs will be available April 2020 onward and you can
start ordering them from today onward until 31st of March 2020.
Why would you get this over the older X80G TVs? It has the
same 4K resolution that the X80G has. It has a new HDR Processor X1, an
evolution of the X-Reality Pro engine. That also means crisper, clearer, and
more detailed images on your TV screen. Plus, its Object-based HDR remastering
makes your TV viewing experience even better. If you find Dolby Vision compatible
movies, this is really the screen that can take advantage of that.
Thanks to X-Balanced Speakers as well (55-inch and above),
you may save some money from not needing to buy a soundbar anyway. If you do
get a soundbar, you might want to spend a little more is what I am saying.
Still, the X-Balanced speakers are Dolby Atmos certified, which also means that
it should produce immersive audio. Even Spotify will sound good.
The Sony Bravia X80H series comes with Android’s latest 9.0 Pie Operating System, effectively making this the usual Smart TV that is pretty much a compulsory in TVs these days. The smart features is more than just Android 9.0 though. With the Sony Bravia X80H series, connecting to Apple AirPlay and HomeKit is now made easier.
Pre-orders can be made at selected Sony Stores and Centres
across the nation. If you do pre-order, you get a wireless keyboard and a
Netflix gift card worth MYR 100 together with your TV when you collect it. Of
course, terms and conditions apply. For more information, you can visit their website.
If you ask us last week about what was the most anticipated smartphone was to us this week, we would all in agreement say the OPPO Find X2. We will tell you why.
The OPPO Find X is now about two years old, if you have not noticed. The OPPO Find X was also OPPO’s first device to hit the MYR 3,000 price range. At the time, it was an expensive device. You get a thoroughbred device for that money though. It was a smartphone that is worthy of its ‘flagship’ moniker in every way. Its clever motorised pop-up mechanism is also one that captures plenty of eyes. Of course, there were some fundamental flaws with the design that is eventually solved in other iterations of similar implementations of the mechanism.
In short; we liked the OPPO Find X. Its pretty looks, large display, capable camera, and long battery life being the main reasons of it winning our hearts. Still, that was two years ago and there was no follow up model until now.
We have covered the global launch so we will not go on and on about its hardware. We did not see the device in our hands too, blame COVID-19 concerns for that. But still, the device has come to Malaysia just a few days after its global launch. That is a good indication of how much OPPO is betting on the local market at this time.
To jog your memory a little bit. The OPPO Find X2 and Find X2 Pro, replacing the OPPO Find X, has a Qualcomm Snapdragon 865 SoC shoehorned into a 6.78-inch 2K AMOLED display body that refreshes at 120Hz and samples touch at 240Hz. Through the fast display you are looking through a 48-Megapixel main shooter. There are some differences in the paired cameras in the array between the two variants. All the powerful hardware is given life by a 4,260mAh battery that SuperVOOC fast charges at 65W. As the live demonstration in Barcelona shows, it charges from flat to full in 38-minutes.
The OPPO Find X2 Pro will be available in Black and Orange colour options. The Black will come with a ceramic finish while the Orange is a vegan leather finish. The OPPO Find X2 on the other hand will receive Black and Ocean colour treatments. The Ocean option would be a glass finish. Both models are 5G ready.
The OPPO Find X2 and Find X2 Pro will be available in Malaysia 14th of March 2020 onward for MYR 3,999 and MYR 4,599 respectively. If you want to be some of the first people to own one of these flagship goodness, you might want to get on the pre-order boat. The offer lasts until 13th of March 2020, so you still have time. No official word on their Lamborghini limited edition ones though.
If you do pre-order the OPPO Find X2 series, you get a VOOC Flash charge powerbank and an extended 1-year warranty programme with 3-months screen protection. If you are one of the first 300 customers to pick up their OPPO Find X device on the 14th March 2020, or the OPPO Find X2 Pro on the 21st March 2020, you get a set of OPPO Enco Free TWS earphones. Of course, terms and conditions apply. For more information, do visit their website.
