Digi’s Juara Internet Malaysiaku Offers Free Phones, Extra Internet, and Rebates in Conjunction with National Day and Malaysia Day

It is August, for Malaysia that means it is the month leading to the National Day and Malaysia Day. It means we get two extra holidays for the month of August and September. But it is also a celebration of what of Malaysia and all that is Malaysian. 

Digi, one of the biggest homegrown telcos celebrates the month of August and September the only way it knows how; giving more good deals. In anticipation of National Day and Malaysia Day, Digi launches the Juara Internet Malaysiaku promotion. Of course, since it is also a promotion for Malaysia Day, it lasts through August and September 2022.  

Starting from today new and existing Digi customers are entitled to free devices when they sign up for a new internet plan. If you sign up for a new Digi Postpaid Family Unlimited plan, you get a new Samsung Galaxy Tab A7 Lite for free. With the Pakej PowerJimat postpaid plans, you are entitled to a number of free Samsung, Redmi, vivo, and OPPO smartphones.  

If you are thinking of getting a new home internet plan from Digi, there is no better time than now to get it. New customers to the Digi Fibre 190 plan and above are entitled to rebates totalling up to MYR 240. Current Digi customers are entitled to up to MYR 60 a month in savings when they pair their postpaid plans to select Digi Fibre plans.  

Postpaid customers are entitled to enjoy 10GB more data for 12 months if you switch or upgrade to Digi Postpaid 40, 60, and 90 plans. If you go for the 120 or 150 plans, you get 50% more quota than what is offered on the brochure. Customers who are on Digi Postpaid 90 programs and above also get to enjoy up to MYR 15 of additional rebate every month for the next 12 months. New customers to the Prepaid NEXT 35, NEXT 45, Raja Kombo 35, and Raja Kombo 45 plans gets 65GB of additional high-speed video quota for 30 days so that they can enjoy contents from Netflix, Viu, Astro Go, and YouTube without worrying about running out of data. Loyalty pays here, current prepaid customers get an additional 130GB of high-speed streaming quota with any 30-day Internet plan purchase via MyDigi Box of Surprise. Digi’s Unlimited Video Pass is also now extended to all Digi Prepaid customers. Your Instagram Feed is About to Get Stranger

Meta, formerly known as Facebook, still is known for Facebook, has just posted their quarterly earnings report. For the first time since 2007, they have posted a decline in revenue, US$ 28.82 billion versus US$ 29.07 billion in the second quarter of 2021. That is a whopping 1% drop in revenue year-on-year. No, that is not a lot, to be fair. It is not that alarming either, if you ask us. What could be more alarming is that the drop in revenue comes with a larger drop in net income for Meta, about 36% loss compared to the same quarter last year (Q2 2021).  

The drop in revenue could be due to many reasons. One of the reasons could be also because of the loss in user base and daily user counts thanks to the ongoing crisis over in Russia and Ukraine. The loss in revenue and profits could also be largely due to Apple’s new “opt out” policy that significantly changes how ads are being served on iOS devices.  

While a decline in revenue and profits is bad news, it is not something we should really feel bad about. After all, Meta still rakes in profits in the billions. What could be bad news to us though is what Mark Zuckerberg is planning for Instagram to make it more profitable than before.  

Instagram primarily does photos and images. It started its life to be a one-stop shop for sharing your photos with your friends and family with no fuss or frills. When Meta, or then Facebook gotten a hold of Instagram, they saw it as an opportunity to level the playing field with Snapchat and introduced Instagram Stories, a sub platform within Instagram to share photos with your followers available for the next 24 hours. A sort of “what’s on my mind”, or “what am I doing right now” kind of thing for the masses. 

Recently, Instagram has started to favour more video contents. Understandably, the rise in short form video contents had an astronomical rise thanks to the likes of TikTok. Instagram tried to introduce more video features within their platform starting with Instagram TV, a long format video platform within Instagram to encourage content creators to post longer format videos on Instagram. Then there is Reels now, a short form video platform within Instagram that is supposed to encourage content creators to post more bite sized chunks of videos on their profile.

While more contents from our friends is great for us in the grand scheme of things, Instagram has also tweaked their algorithms alongside all the new features they have added. Your Instagram main feed is now loaded with posts from strangers and accounts you have never followed. They are recommendations based on the posts you have been responding to or interacted with. Nothing wrong with that, except you are seeing less of your friends and more strangers on your feed. It is starting to be more like TikTok, and people have mentioned that they hated it. 

Unfortunately, their woes will fall on deaf ears. Meta’s CEO has mentioned that the company will be doubling the amount of ‘recommended’ contents to users by 2023. The same changes apply to Facebook as well. This also means that at least 30% of our feeds on Instagram and Facebook will be filled by contents from people we do not know or have never followed suggested by Meta’s recommendation algorithm. 

If you want to only see feeds from people you are following, there is a way. All you need to do is to hit the ‘Instagram’ logo on the top right corner of your display or the app and select ‘following’ there. That way you are seeing feed only from people you are following. It is an extra step, but hey, it is better than seeing strangers on your feed all the time.

The Razer Deathstalker V2 – Razer’s Ultimate Low-Profile Keyboard Comes for Round 2

Razer’s gaming peripherals are some of the most highly acclaimed products in the world of gaming. Sure, there are some products that is plagued with build quality issues. Razer as a brand is always associated with premium gaming peripherals though.  

One of the most highly acclaimed peripherals in their stables is their Razer Deathstalker keyboard. It is a low-profile keyboard with chiclet style keys that struck well with Razer’s fans. The low-profile keyboard is designed to be as comfortable as possible to game on and to work with.  

The first Deathstalker rolled out in 2014. The Deathstalker is now about eight years old now. Time for an upgrade, a version 2.

The Deathstalker V2 line-up, as Razer calls it, is the evolution of the concept that was the original Deathstalker. It is still a low-profile keyboard, like the original. Except, the Deathstalker V2 line-up is also choke full of Razer’s eight years’ worth of R&D.  

One of the new innovations packed into the latest Razer Deathstalker is also Razer’s latest. With the Deathstalker V2, Razer introduces their new low-profile optical switches. It still works like their original optical switches. It relies on an infra-red beam within the switches to register the keypresses at lightspeeds. The technology ensures that the keyboard is as responsive as it can be in gaming applications and even better typing experience. 

Low-profile does not mean that the keyboard must feel less stellar than regular switches. It still features up to 1.2mm actuation point and 2.8mm of total travel. The two options, the Linear and Clicky variants of the switches also offer super light actuation force for speedy responses in intense gaming battles. The Linear actuates at 45 grams, while the Clicky variant actuates at 50 grams at 1.5mm actuation point. Razer also says that the switches can last up to 70 million key presses, supposedly 40% better than their competitors.

While the older Deathstalker comes with an attached wrist rest that cannot be removed. The new one does not. It is a low-profile keyboard designed to ensure that users do not need a wrist rest even in extended usage conditions. To ensure that the keyboard lasts a long time, the plate is made from 5052 aluminium material. It is there for that ‘thock’ as well, of course.  

Topping everything off is a rather unique keycap. Of course, they have to be low-profile keycaps, just to fit the whole ‘low-profile’ look and feel. The keycaps are laser etched caps with a special coating to ensure that it is fade and scratch resistant, even more so than doubleshot PBT keycaps, according to Razer. 

Of course, thanks to huge advancements in wireless technology, the Razer Deathstalker V2 Pro and Deathstalker V2 Pro Tenkeyless comes with Razer’s Hyperspeed Wireless technology. Razer’s proprietary wireless technology ensures that the keyboard offers the lowest latencies even in wireless mode for a cable-like experience without the fuss of cable managing. If not, it offers Bluetooth 5.0 connectivity as well for low latency and extra stable connections with up to 3 devices at once. 

The Deathstalker V2 Pro offers up to 40 hours of battery life. The Tenkeyless version offers even more battery life at 50 hours. No need to replace the batteries, they are both charge via a USB Type-C port. Of course, the Type-C cable can also be used as the main connection to your PC as well. Of course, the Deathstalker V2 line-up also comes with Razer’s Chroma RGB controllable via their Razer Synapse 3 software on the PC.

The Razer Deathstalker V2 line-up starts at MYR 799. There are no colour options for they keyboard, just plain ol’ black. If you are looking for the Tenkeyless version of the keyboard, you will want the Deathstalker V2 Pro Tenkeyless variant at MYR 929. The full-sized keyboard with Razer’s Hyperspeed technology, the Deathstalker V2 Pro will set you back MYR 999 from the 26th of August 2022 onward. Audio Switching on Android, Coming Soon by Google

Bluetooth, we think, is a gift to the world. It is the alternative to Wi-Fi. In its current Bluetooth 5.0 generation, the technology is better than it has even been. Over a short distance, it is one of the best ways to transfer large amounts of data. It allows multiple devices to be connected simultaneously. It is also the most stable type of short-range connection you can get in your mobile devices today at ultra-low latency. 

That is why it is the preferred connection when it comes to your portable and wireless audio gear. Microsoft and Google have made it a point to allow for certified Bluetooth devices to connect to their devices much quicker and easier. The Quick Pair and Fast Pair functions saves us users a lot of time in connecting our Bluetooth gear. 

There is a problem with all these conveniences however, or rather, an inconvenience. Especially since multi-device connectivity is available on Bluetooth earphones, getting your devices or audio coming out from the right devices seems to be an issue today. For you to switch audio input from one device to the other is still a manual labour, no more inconvenient that just completely switching your Bluetooth earphone’s input source.  

Google Audio Switching 

According to Google’s blog post, their audio switching technology works on top of their Fast Pair algorithm. That also means that you do need to have a Bluetooth device that supports Google Fast Pair for it to work. Most new Bluetooth enabled wireless headphones today, save for Apple’s offerings, features Fast Pair anyway. 

They explained that using contextual information on what you are listening to, the algorithm automatically switches your audio input based on your actions. The algorithm is also highly dependent on audio prioritization to determine which audio source should be prioritized over which. For example, if your headset is connected to both your tablet and your smartphone and you are listening to music on your tablet and you received a simple notification on your smartphone, your gear should not be switching sources. When you get a call on your phone, for example, only then your audio source should prioritize the phone call and switch its source to your smartphone immediately. 

While there is a default priority setting to what your Bluetooth device prioritizes, Google is also giving users the ability to select and customize the experience on their own. At the same time, the experience will not only be limited to Fast Pair enabled Bluetooth audio gear connected to Android or Google devices only. The feature will also be available for all devices that support Bluetooth multipoint connection allowing you to have the convenience of quickly switching audio sources from your smartphone to your Windows laptop and vice versa.  

Currently, Google will be rolling out the new feature update to their own Pixel Buds Pro first. They say that they are rolling out the updates to their manufacturing partners like Sony and JBL over the next few weeks. From then on it is just a matter of time before the current line-up of Sony and JBL Bluetooth headsets get the update from the manufacturer’s end. You do not necessarily need an app to toggle audio switching as well, you just need to head into ‘Device details’ in the general Bluetooth settings page.

No FTs in Minecraft – Mojang Studios Takes a Stance on in-game NFTs

If you have not heard of non-fungible tokens (NFTs), you should really go out from your house and start talking to your friends. It is one of the most ‘in’ things today. Thanks to advancements and creative use in technology, the art scene has been in a completely different high in the modern world. When we say art, we are not completely referring to the traditional art market. NFTs refer to specialized digital art that is uniquely made with their own identifier thanks to blockchain technology.

While NFTs is the hottest trend in the digitally ‘woke’ world today, it is a highly disputed technology. Plenty questions its validity and hype comparing it to the rise and fall of cryptocurrencies. There are also plenty of discussions on whether NFTs should have a place in gaming industry too. The concept of blockchain based gaming is not a new one, as well as NFT assets in games. Games like Axie Infinity is a good example of NFT based gaming that works around the assets itself. There are also games in development that built itself around NFT ownership and trade as well currently.

Not everyone agrees with the presence of NFTs in games though. One of them is Mojang studios, the people behind one of the most successful game franchises we know today, Minecraft. According to a very recent post on Mojang’s Minecraft blog, they have stated that they are not allowing NFTs to be part of the game to protect its users. They also see NFT as a rather exclusive asset that might not align to their policy to ensure that the game is inclusive to all kinds of players.

The idea of NFTs in Minecraft, while seems rather interesting, was not concocted by Mojang themselves. It is an implementation by other NFT based companies to show that they can generate unique collectibles, world files, and skin packs in the Minecraft world. The implementation also allows users to earn NFTs through activities inside and outside of the game itself.

While having unique assets is a noble idea in Minecraft, they say that they do not want to create an environment where scarcity and exclusion becomes a culture within Minecraft. Minecraft also has its own marketplace that allows players to sell their own creations for others to use. Minecraft also allows players to charge for access to their servers. All players have the same level of access to functionalities and available contents throughout the game. NFTs goes completely against that concept, according to Mojang. Therefore, NFTs should not have its place in the Minecraft game at this time.

Mojang is not completely against the idea of blockchain in Minecraft though. Mojang says that they will be paying close attention to how blockchain technology progresses. The idea is to implement blockchain within the game that complies to their concept of inclusivity and other practical use cases in gaming. They also re-iterated that they are not planning to implement blockchain within Minecraft currently.

Alienware Unleashes AMD Advantage m17 R5

Alienware should not be a name that is unfamiliar to gamers. They are, technically, the biggest name in gaming PC before gaming PCs become mainstream. Mobvoi’s Next Flagship Could be a Wear OS 3 Device

Google, at least as of the last Google I/O they had, has a renewed commitment to their Wear OS platform in partnership with Samsung. In that sense, you can expect Samsung to be one of those watchmakers that would be making flagship watches that Google can be proud of. They are not exclusive Wear OS device makers though. The source code for Wear OS is still an open one and currently Tag Heuer and Fossil are on the Google Wear OS boat.

There are plenty of smartwatch makers out in the market. The problem is, every one of them offers a slightly different take on what smartwatches should look like. They all feature different proprietary interfaces with their own OS. Samsung, one of the most successful makers in the wearable space, was working with their own Tizen OS before making the switch to Google.

Then there is Mobvoi. Mobvoi is not new, really. They have existed for a while, and they have been focused on making wearables. They have also been on the Wear OS bandwagon for a while now. The only issue is that their current flagship, the Ticwatch Pro 3 Ultra is still running on an older Wear OS firmware. Solution? Launch a new watch.

Except, it is not that simple. When you are a smaller company like Mobvoi, things do not usually come easily. They need product testers. Where do they go? They email their customers or known reviewers to be a part of the process. So, they did.

They emailed a Reddit user, which in turn leaked it to Reddit, about them looking for reviewers or testers for their new TicWatch that is apparently coming soon. The leak also suggested that there are a few main features on the new flagship TicWatch. One of it is, obviously, flagship. Together with Flagship, Mobvoi also says that it has improved premium design.

There are a few more things that Mobvoi teased about the new TicWatch too. They highlighted that it would have long duration battery, NFC payment compatible with Google Pay, IP68 waterproofing alongside a GPS tracker, speaker, and microphone, and lastly it will have IHB/ AFiB detection and fatigue assessment. Its compatibility with Google Pay via NFC should be clue enough that the upcoming TicWatch will be a Wear OS device.

Currently, Mobvoi’s latest flagship is the TicWatch Pro 3 Ultra GPS. It will set you back MYR 1,399. For that money, you get Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 4100 system on a chip (SoC) for wearables. It also features a large 1.4-inch AMOLED display with up to 45 days battery life. You can expect the next flagship TicWatch to set you back around the same price with even more features than before.

Gaming Tesla – Coming Soon with Steam

When you think electric car, you think Tesla. When you think gaming, you do not really think Tesla. You think PCs, you think gaming consoles, you think Steam. But gaming and Tesla has a place in the same sentence.

The Tesla is not really a technological marvel. It is a step in the right direction for the automotive industry. They are currently still the largest electric automaker in the world. Traditional automakers like BMW, Mercedes-Benz, and even Porsche have been working overtime mostly to play catch up for now. At least that is the case on the surface.

We are not talking about other automakers though. We are talking about Tesla. We are also talking about gaming.

You can technically game in a Tesla. The expansive touch sensitive display that is found in Tesla autocars are pretty much its control center. The interface you get from the display is the Tesla’s nerve center, control hub. It is also the entertainment hub for your car. Usually, in a car, you can expect media players and some form of navigation software. In a Tesla you can find games too.

You can play rather traditional simple games like Solitaire and even Chess. You can even find Missile Command and Super Breakout, cult classics that will feature long lines in any arcade. Then there is something that comes from the modern era of gaming; Beach Buggy Racing 2. You even get Sonic the Hedgehog in a Tesla. Tesla, in this case, is not new to gaming.

What will be new though is Steam on a Tesla. This might sound like a surprising bit of news. Thing is, it should not be.

Steam has announced their very own gaming console in the Steam Deck. The console mimics the handling style that is the ever so popular Nintendo Switch, except it is a lot more advanced. It is also obviously heavier, and bulkier too, since it is built to be a gaming PC in a handheld chassis.

The Steam Deck, however much less powerful it will be against regular gaming PC towers, is purpose built for gaming with Steam on board though. That also means that games should run smoothly on the Steam Deck still, as long as they are optimized. How would that work on a Tesla?

Tesla’s center control, its nerve center, is rather powerful. The Tesla Model X and Model S’s center unit runs on AMD’s Ryzen CPU and it also packs a powerful RDNA-2 GPU, the same one you can find on the latest gaming consoles. That means that these cars are practically gaming consoles attached in a car. As long as games are optimized, they should be able to run on a Tesla with acceptable graphics quality at least.

Of course, there is no confirmation on Whether Steam will find a home in your Tesla. The announcement was made by Elon Musk on his twitter account. He also claims that a demo is coming in the coming month. There are no announcement or confirmations on Steam as well currently. Until then, this could just be rumours.

In the early days of OnePlus, they have always adopted the moniker of a ‘flagship killer’. They were offering flagship level smartphones at a much lower price point. Over the years though, things have changed a little. While their flagships have gotten much better, as per flagships in the modern era, their price points have also gone higher than before. Their flagships smartphones can no longer be called ‘flagship killers’. They are just flagships now. 

The ‘flagship killer’ moniker did not die though with the introduction of the OnePlus’ Nord mid-range smartphone. The first Nord was through and through a mid-range smartphone. It offered a mid-range smartphone experience that is rather close or comparable to most flagships in the modern era though. It was also offered at a much lower price point.  

Of course, the first-generation Nord, however good it was, must be replaced with a new one. The latest one of the bunch is the Nord 2T 5G. Welcome to the flagship experience, but at a fraction of the price.

At MYR 1,899, it is not the cheapest mid-range smartphone you can find in the market. At the same time, on paper, it could be one of the most value packed smartphones you can find in its segment.  

For starters you get MediaTek’s Dimensity 1300 5G system on a chip (SoC). On paper at least, the MediaTek Dimensity 1300 is one of the most powerful, if not the most powerful SoC in its class. It also packs improved AI and imaging capabilities for improved photo and video processing. Thanks to the new SoC, videos can be taken in HDR as well. Working with Sony’s DOL-HDR technology brightness, colours, and even contrasts in videos are improved greatly for natural looking videos with accurate colours. You can also shoot videos at 960fps slow motion with the new processing power from the SoC. 

Alongside the 3GHz clocked SoC you may find a 12GB (up to) RAM for that smooth and snappy multitasking mode. When you need more, the clever Oxygen OS 12.1 can allocate up to 5GB of your 256GB (up to) storage as temporary RAM for even better experience. For more stable connectivity on both Wi-Fi and Bluetooth, the device packs Wi-Fi/Bluetooth Hybrid 2.0 technology.

Displaying Oxygen OS 12.1 on top of Android 12 in all its glory is a large 6.43-inch Full HD+ AMOLED display. The AMOLED panel refreshes at up to 90Hz for that extra smooth feel when scrolling through the interface. With HDR10+ support also, movies with HDR support should look better than good.  

Super Cameras

Out the back is the same 50-Megapixel shooter you can find on OnePlus’ falgship OnePlus 10 Pro. The Sony IMX766 features a large 1/1.56-inch sensor with optical image stabilisation that allows for more light to be captured for more natural looking and better detailed photos. On the side, there is an 8-Megapixel ultra-wide camera for when you need more things to fit into the display. Out the front is also the same 32-Megapixel shooter you can find on the OnePlus 10 Pro.  

Thanks to the Dimensity 1300 SoC’s improved camera AI performance, the OnePlus Nord 2T 5G’s camera can shoot even better in low-light conditions. Of course, the fact that the larger 50-Megapixel sensor allows for 56% more light to be captured helps with low-light photography as well. 

Long Lasting, Fast Charging

To keep the Nord 2T 5G running an entire day and more is a large 4,500 mAh built-in battery. If that is not enough to keep you going, the device features SuperVOOC ultra-fast charging technology that charges the device at up to 80W. At that kind of speed, the device can be charged from nothing to 100% in a single 27-minute charge. It also supposedly takes only 15-minutes for a charge that lasts an entire day.  

Price and Availability 

The OnePlus Nord 2T 5G will be available at OnePlus authorised retailers, their own webstore, and their official online stores on Shopee and Lazada from the 19th of July 2022 onward. It comes in either Gray Shadow (only 12GB + 256GB) and Jade Fog (only 8GB + 128GB). The Nord 2T 5G will set you back MYR 2,099 and MYR 1,899 respectively.
