Disney+ Introducing new Ad-Supported Tier But You Still Have to Pay for It

Disney+ is coming off a pretty good quarter when it comes to subscribers. The streaming service is now the largest of its kind with 152.1 million subscribers worldwide. However, it looks like the House of Mouse is still struggling to make its streaming businesses profitable. Yep – businesses – Disney has more than one streaming service repertoire; Disney+ is its most widely available. Hulu, ESPN+ and Live TV are also part of the catalogue but aren’t widely available. Altogether, the businesses have seen an aggregated USD$1.1 billion in losses.

Disney

It would seem that to make the business more profitable, Disney+ will be introducing a Disney+ Premium subscription while the current tier will become an ad-supported one. You read that correct, Disney isn’t introducing a brand new tier, it’s turning its current tier into an ad-supported one. The new ad-free “Premium” tier will be priced at USD$10.99 (MYR48.85), a 37.5% increase in price. It would seem like the ad-supported tier will be screening 15- to 30-second ads for every hour of viewing which can be pretty disruptive especially if you’re watching a movie. The change will be introduced on December 8, 2022.

The change in the subscription structure has, so far, only been confirmed for the United States. Disney hasn’t commented on the change in other regions. In Malaysia, the service is currently available for MYR54.90 for 3 months that’s equivalent to USD$3.09 a month. However, it’s available under its Disney+Hotstar brand which carries a whole other catalogue including local content and licensed content under Hotstar. If the service is to follow the repricing the U.S. is doing, yearly commitment for the service would be MYR301.95 from the current MYR219.60. At which point, it may be cheaper to simply get it as part of a bundle from Astro.

That said, Disney+ isn’t the only service looking at introducing an ad-supported tier. Just recently, Netflix announced that it would be doing the same in a partnership with Microsoft. However, Netflix’s implementation of the ad-supported tier will limit the amount of content accessible to the user in its ad-supported tier. For now, Disney+ seems to not do this. However, we shall wait and see.

Razer Unleashes the DeathAdder V3 Pro – The Best Got Better

Razer started out their life by making a particular mouse. The purpose of the mouse they made was also rather specific. It is made with performance in mind, it is made for gamers. It is made so that users of the mouse in question gets competitive advantage in games, be it multiplayer or single player games.

At that time, the term eSports did not exist. The PC gaming industry was at its infancy and there were plenty of games that could be competitive games, but most games were focused on individual players. The term multiplayer only existed a little later with LAN capable games like Counter Strike. The Counter Strike franchise at this point is one of the most popular gaming titles available and is one of the biggest competitive gaming titles.

Gaming peripherals grew with the rise of competitive gaming. Razer, one of the pioneers of gaming specific gears, thrived with that. Of course, their product list also grew. As technology improves too, so did their products. Today, there is a new kid on the block, and it could be their more spectacular gaming mouse to date.

They introduced their DeathAdder V3 Pro, a wireless gaming mouse that is made specifically for competitive gaming. In other words, the DeathAdder V3 Pro is made specifically for eSports.

It is lighter now, more than ever. The DeathAdder V3 Pro only weighs in at 63 grams (64g if you go for white colorway). It is ergonomically shaped to fit the contour of your right palm in the most natural way for more comfortable extended use cases. They have improved ergonomics here as well; everything has been raised a little to ensure that the wrist is more elevated and in a better position. The buttons, scroll wheels, and palm support is slightly moved and raised to ensure that everything is easily reachable. The grooves on the sides allow for better grip and tactility.

All of these are done and designed with inputs from top eSports athletes Razer has access to. The contours and grooves are basically the result of plentty of development work with eSports athletes. The reduction in weight is also a direct result of that collaboration, obviously.

While it is 25% lighter than before, it curiously boasts an extended battery life too. The built-in battery boasts up to 90 hours of use time. It is rechargeable via USB Type-C too, Razer also includes a Speedflex braided charging cable with the DeathAdder V3 Pro.

The DeathAdder V3 Pro packs Razer’s Focus Pro 30K Optical Sensor with up to 99.8% resolution accuracy for unrivaled speed and accuracy, even via wireless connection. The new sensor also packs AI Smart Tracking, Motion Sync, and Asymmetric Cut-Off for even better competitive experience in heated situations. The Optical Mouse Switches Gen-3 offers a zero double-clicking and no debounce relay to ensure that every click is registered as that, clicks, at the highest speeds for up to 90 million clicks.

Razer’s DeathAdder V3 Pro features low-latency response times too thanks to Razer’s HyperSpped Wireless technology. Thanks to the new Razer HyperPolling Wireless Technology, the DeathAdder V3 Pro supports a polling rate of 1000Hz at 1ms intervals for responsiveness and smoothness comparable to wired mice. If that is not fast enough, you can get Razer’s HyperPolling Wireless Dongle for up to 4000Hz wireless polling rate.

LG’s Latest PuriCare is a Self-Service Thing for MYR 60/month Onward!

There are a few ways to live healthy. You can exercise and control your diet. To ensure your home is well protected and the air you breathe at home is clean and pure, you can buy air purifiers, or air-conditioning units that comes with air cleaning functions. But there is one thing that you always forget, a rather basic thing that we all need to survive; our water.

Water is a pretty basic consumable that we take for granted sometimes. With the constant water supply cuts in Selangor, Malaysia, you might grow to appreciate the constant flow of water you might find in your home. That said, access to clean water in Malaysia is rather abundant. Still, clean water is not drinking water. For that you want a water purifier, or some sort of filter to ensure that the water that flows out of your tap is safe to consume.

The problem with most water purifiers though is the constant servicing that is required. You cannot do it yourself too in most cases. You need to get someone to come in and replace all the filters, clean out the tank, and then bill you for it, on top of however much you are already paying for the water purifier itself. Not LG’s latest PuriCare Tankless water purifier.

LG PuriCare 2022 04

There is nothing wrong with having someone to come and change your filters or clean out your tank. It costs some of your time though. You need to wait at home for someone to come, wait for them to leave before you can be out and about again. Modern water purifiers are also rather complex machines that requires some know how to service, which also means you have no choice but to engage the service providers to change and clean water purifier.

LG’s latest PuriCare water purifier eliminates the need for a service person. The new rig is designed to ensure that even you can change the filters in just a few minutes. It is completely toolless too, to make it even simpler to maintain on your own.

LG’s Tankless technology is nothing new. They launched the technology a couple of years ago to eliminate the need for tank maintenance whenever the rig needs servicing. The benefit of a tankless system is also to ensure that there is no microorganism build up in the tank that will affect the quality of the dispensed water. What is clever is that the machine can dispense hot and cold water all the same.

Water from the LG PuriCare purifier goes through a 4-stage All Puri Filter System that eliminates microorganisms, 99.99% norovirus, and heavy metals like mercury, lead, arsenic, cadmium, iron, copper, aluminium, manganese, and zinc that are all quite hazardous if consumed in excess amounts. The clever technology inside the compact machine also allows you to have hot water and cold water instantly without needing a tank to store both cold and hot water at the same time.

The new LG PuriCare self-service tankless water purifier system will set you back MYR 3,200 and comes with 2 years’ worth of filter subscriptions sent every six months to your doorstep. If you still want someone to come by and help you change the filters, it will set you back MYR 4,000. You can get the water purifier in your house for just MYR 60 a month though for a 7-year subscription self-service plan. You can choose between Navy Blue, Silver, and White colour options. Samsung’s New Streamlined Galaxy Watch5 series Brings Advanced Sensors &Tracking

Samsung’s new Galaxy Watch5 series is a fresh new approach to how the company looks to differentiate its wearables. The lineup was once more geared towards being a middle point for technology buffs, fashionistas and fitness enthusiasts, now Samsung is redefining its outlook with the Galaxy Watch5. This year’s offering comes with two variants (so far): the Galaxy Watch5 and the Galaxy Watch5 Pro.

Samsung Unpacked August 2022 003

Both smartwatches are geared toward people looking to make sense and keep track of their health. Samsung has equipped the smartwatches with an updated BioActive sensor. Like its predecessor, the BioActive Sensor continues to come with a dedicated chip and the Optical Heart Rate and Bioelectrical Impedance Analysis sensors. However, on the new Watch5 series, the sensor has an increased surface area with more direct contact with the user’s wrist. Thanks to this, you’ll be able to track your blood oxygenation, heart rate and even stress levels more accurately.

Together with improved measurements, users of the new Galaxy Watch5 series will also be able to more insights with the new Body Composition measurement tool. This tool takes a snapshot of the users’ health by breaking down the percentage of body weight which is your bones, fat and, of course, muscle mass. Using this information, Samsung’s Health app will then be able to recommend and tailor personalised workouts as well as track their progress towards their goals.

Samsung Unpacked August 2022 004

Like the Galaxy Watches before, the Watch5 and Watch5 Pro will both be able to track sleep. Additionally, they will be able to use the information from tracking and provide Sleep Scores and Profiles. This information can then be used to help users get more rested sleep. These Sleep Profiles will also be able to tie in with Samsung’s SmartThings platform and intelligently adjust and optimise your environment for better sleep. The new smartwatches also come with enhanced fall detection which notifies an emergency contact should the wearer stumble and fall.

The Galaxy Watch5 series comes with the new Exynos W920 dual-core processor which is clocked at 1.18 GHz. It also has 1.5GB of RAM and 16GB of internal storage. In addition to the BioActive Sensor, the smartwatches come equipped with an accelerometer, barometer, Gyro Sensor, Geomagnetic Sensor and Light Sensor. The series is also rated with MIL-STD-810H durability and IP68 water and dust resistance.

Differentiating Enthusiasts & Pros

With all the similarities out of the way, the Galaxy Watch5 and Watch5 Pro differentiate their users with one key feature: GPX. This feature allows you to plot your runs or routes for your workout. You will be able to download routes from your forums or share them with your friends. The maps can be uploaded directly from your phone or computer onto the Galaxy Watch5 Pro.

Samsung Unpacked August 2022 006

In addition, the Watch5 Pro comes with enhanced durability thanks to Sapphire Crystal and its durable titanium casing compared to the Armor Aluminium of the Watch5. Even its protruded bezel is designed to be more rugged and protect the display of the Galaxy Watch5 Pro. The Galaxy Watch5 Pro also comes with a more sporty D-Buckle Sport Band out of the box.

Pricing & Availability

The Galaxy Watch5 will be available in standard 40mm and larger 44mm sizes. The former will be available in Graphite, Pink Gold and Silver with Samsung’s signature Bora Purple straps. The larger 44mm size will be available in Graphite, Sapphire and Silver. Prices will start from MYR1,099 for the Bluetooth version.

Samsung Unpacked August 2022 002

The Galaxy Watch5 Pro will be able available in a single 45mm size in either Gray Titanium or Black Titanium. The Watch5 Pro will be priced from MYR1,899 for the Bluetooth version.

Samsung Galaxy Watch5 Series Rumour Round-Up

With Samsung’s big Galaxy Unpacked event happening on August 10, we thought it’d be a good time to round up all the rumours behind the devices poised to make their global debut at the event. We’ve already covered all the Galaxy Z Fold 4 and Galaxy Z Flip 4 rumours. There’s still one show stopper coming at the event – the Galaxy Watch 5 series.

Better Specs, Maybe a new Sensor

Samsung’s Galaxy Watch 4 series was its first outing running OneUI Watch on top of Google’s Wear OS. Even with new software, the company managed to introduce new features and up the ante when it comes to their wearables. It’s going to be an interesting year for the Watch series with Samsung delving deeper into health metrics and applying them to the medical field. In fact, rumours are rife with Samsung bolstering the Watch5 series with an additional body temperature sensor for better tracking of sleep and perhaps other metrics.

  • samgalaxy5 rear 1024x683 jpg
  • samsunggalaxywatch5 1024x683 jpg

The Galaxy Watch 5 series will seemingly come with Samsung’s own Exynos W920 processor. The processor was announced last year and specifically built for wearable tech like the Galaxy Watch series. It looks like the series will be consisting of two entries – The Galaxy Watch5 and the Galaxy Watch5 Pro. If you’re wondering where’s the classic? It seems like Samsung will be doing away with the navigator design of the classic for the new Pro.

Minor Design Tweaks with 50 Hours battery

The Watch5 Pro comes with a few design changes – the most obvious being a raised circular bezel. Apparently, this will be where Samsung’s digital rotating bezel feature gets slightly more tactile. In addition, the Pro will also be made of more premium materials including Sapphire Glass and titanium.

Aside from these differences, the Galaxy Watch5 and Watch5 Pro will have similar designs. Samsung’s new design language gives the Galaxy Watch a more sporty and edgy look. The bands are now meeting the body of the Watch and becoming a contiguous fluid structure. It looks like Samsung has also redesigned the straps opting for a design with a clasp or magnet instead of the usual pin and holes we’re used to seeing.

The regular Galaxy Watch5 seems to be continuing the tradition of having two sizes: a 44mm and a 40mm version. These versions will come with different-sized AMOLED displays. The smaller 40mm version is tipped to be coming with a 1.19-inch display while the 44-inch one is tipped for a 1.36-inch display. In addition, it looks like we can expect better battery life with the increased battery size of the Watch5 series. The smaller version is rumoured to come with a 284mAh battery while the larger 44mm version will come with a 410mAh battery. That said, both are expected to deliver about 50 hours of usage on a single charge. It is also rumoured to come with a 10W fast charger in the box.

Rumoured Pricing

According to the leaks, it looks like the Galaxy Watch5 series will be priced at a lower price point than its predecessor. The Watch5 40mm (Bluetooth Only) is rumoured to be retailing at €259 (MYR1,177.13) while the 44mm version will be priced at €286 (MYR1,299.77). The Pro on the other hand will be retailing at €430 (MYR1,954.21) for the 45mm Bluetooth-only option.

Google Duo Meets Google Meet

Google is rather funny, if not indecisive. If you remembered, Google launched a few of their own services that seemed like a great idea. Google+ for example, seemed like a good idea for a Google social media platform. It failed miserably though, even though it comes with Google account as standard. Then there is Google Workspace, which was a rather great implementation of a collaboration platform that is like Trello. They axed the project a little later though.

A little while ago, Google had something called Hangouts, a video calling platform available to users for free. It is now known as Google Meet, but there is also a separate app called Google Chats as well. But there is also another video calling app from Google called Google Duo. Google Duo did not really take off though, despite being a mobile first app. It will also be known as Google Meet soon.

In some sense, you can say that this is Google consolidating their video calling apps into one. In the coming months, Google’s blue coloured Duo icon will replaced by the colourful Google Meet logo. Which also means that you might have two Google Meet on your smartphone in the future.

The Google Duo app will still be constantly updated for the time being, which means you should not be too alarmed about not being able to enjoy the Google Duo app any longer. New users should be downloading the new Google Meet app with Duo integrated into the app though. There is a possibility of an app overlap, in this case, but you may not have to worry about that entirely with the new updates.

The move to integrate Duo into Meet is not a surprise move by Google. Google has announced that their Google Duo app is meant to be integrated into Google Meet in the coming months since June 2022. Consolidating these apps are essentially the best way for Google to single-handedly manage their apps. Managing a single app will also proof much more viable and straightforward for Google. Users can expect to see their Google Duo app turn intot Google Meet in September 2022.

Acer Launches the New Swift 5 Thin and Light Alongside New Aspire Laptops

Acer makes some of the most compelling thin and light laptops in the market. One of the most popular one in their stables is the Swift 5. Unlike the Swift 3 or the Swift X, the Swift 5 is made to be a full on thin and light laptop for the masses. It also does not have a discrete GPU, to ensure that it keeps to minimum weight and thickness. It also features a very pretty and handy touch sensitive display for added navigation options. There is a problem with the past two generations of Acer’s Swift 5. They both look exactly the same save for different colour options. Not the new one.

The only thing the new Swift 5 made for 2022 with Intel’s 12th Generation processors shares with its predecessor is its Olive Green colour option which we find quite attractive on the new design. It is still made entirely out of aluminium for that premium feel and finish. This time, the Acer Swift 5 is made from a unibody aerospace grade aluminium that has been precisely CNC-machined. That also means that it should be even more durable than before.

There is a small trade off with the new Acer Swift 5 with more premium build material. The laptop has gained some weight. Instead of weighing just below 1kg, it now weighs in at 1.2kg. It is not the end of the world though, 200g of weight gain is understandable considering the build material.

While it has grown in heft a little, it remains the same 14.95mm thick as before, which is still mighty thin for a laptop with full-sized USB Type-A and HDMI ports. The new construction and some new hardware within the laptop also mean that the body is slightly more compact than before. All these and you are still getting the best Intel can offer within the body.

photo1659606498

The Intel Evo device is powered by Intel’s latest 12th Generation Core processors with Intel Iris Xe Graphics. You get up to an Intel Core i7-1260P processor for thin and light laptops. You also get up to 16GB of LPDDR4X RAM to go with the powerful CPU. Unfortunately, the RAM is not expandable. Storage comes in the form of a 1TB NVMe SSD, which is plenty enough for all kinds of work you can do with the Swift 5 plus a few movies for your entertainment needs. Keeping everything cool and comfortable is a brilliantly designed backlit keyboard which also acts as the air inlet for the laptop.

All of these power keeps Windows 11 running smoothly on its brilliant 14-inch touch-sensitive display. The IPS panel boasts 2,560 by 1,600 pixels, effectively a WQXGA 16:10 panel for improved productivity and flexibility with more real estate. If you need to quickly get a photo or video edited, the 100% sRGB rating should do your photos and videos justice. The thin bezels surrounding the 14-inch panel is kept to a minimum too, just to get the device to fit as snuggly in your bag as before. The Corning Gorilla Glass with Antimicrobial coating to ensure that the display is protected from all kinds of abuse.

Other than the two full-sized ports mentioned above, you get two more USB Type-C ports with Thunderbolt 4 and 65W PD support and a 3.5mm combo jack. To ensure that you look your best in video calls, you get a Full HD webcam with SHDR support. You also do not need to carry your charger around too much with up to 9 hours of quoted battery life.

Alongside the new Swift 5, Acer also launches their new Aspire series laptops. The Aspire series are not made to be as thin and as light as the Swift 5. They are not made to be the most premium laptops in the market either. They are built to be value-for-money laptops for the mainstream market.

Update to Intel’s 12th Generation processors, the 15.6-inch Aspire series also receives an update in the looks department. The Acer logo is now smaller than before and placed at the top part of the shell instead of the middle. To be fair, most of Acer’s newer laptops feature similar design language.

Alongside the powerful Intel processors, you get up to 8GB of RAM and up to 1TB of storage. The RAM is expandable with an extra slot, while the storage can be expanded as well with a SATA SSD or HDD. You also get to spec your Aspire 3 with up to NVIDIA’s GeForce MX550 discrete GPU for some extra processing power for quick games or video editing use cases. The Aspire 5 with up to an Intel Iris Xe Graphics also features two USB Type-C ports with Thunderbolt 4 support so that you can hook up two more 4K displays.

Price and Availability

The Acer Aspire 3 and Aspire 5 comes in a few attractive colours, including the new Willow Green colour scheme. The Aspire 3 retails from MYR 2,499 while the Aspire 5 starts from MYR 2,599.  The new Acer Swift 5 comes only in Mist Green colour option and starts from MYR 4,699. You can get your hands on the Acer’s latest Swift 5, Aspire 3, and Aspire 5 from Acer’s eStore, Shopee, Lazada, and all authorized retailers immediately. Samsung Introduces the Ultimate 4K gaming Display – The Samsung Odyssey Neo G8 is Here!

To be fair, this should have not come as a surprise. They did technically announce the product in CES 2022 earlier in the year. Yes, it is also the ultimate 4K gaming monitor, the best money can buy at this point. Then again, it is Samsung, they do the best or nothing.

Unlike other 4K displays though, this one is a little unique. Instead of a flat panel you might have expected from the regular 4K monitors, this one is curved at 1000R (1m radius). While others top out at HDR 1000, this one goes to HDR 2000. It does a brightness of up to 1000nits too, which is as bright as it gets for PC monitors currently.

It is a Quantum Mini LED (Quantum Matrix) technology panel, that is why it can achieve ridiculous brightness while maintaining 1,000,000:1 contrast ratio and HDR10+ colours. It is also a 10-bit panel capable of up to 1-billion colours to begin with. That allows the display to have a 95% of DCI-P3 colour gamut coverage. We are guessing that the 5% coverage is lost to the glare reduction matte treatment that is typical of gaming monitors.

As if all these things are not enough to make it easily the best-looking gaming panel at this point, Samsung has also decided to make it the fastest available in its class. It features 240Hz in refresh rate, not like any GPU can run AAA games at 4K @240fps at this point (maybe CS:GO). It is good future proofing though. At the same time, it features 1ms of Grey-to-Grey response time for the ultimate FPS experience.

At such high frame rates, tearing could be a thing with these games. For that, the Odyssey Neo G8 supports AMD FreeSync Premium Pro that minimises tearing in CPU intensive games. It even works with NVIDIA G-Sync GPUs.

For some extra gamer feel, the Odessey monitors come with an RGB ring out the back. The new Neo G8 comes with something they call the CoreSync. It only displays five different colours. The display automatically detects the dominant colour that is displayed in the middle of the monitor and then changes the CoreSync colour accordingly to add to the immersiveness when gaming in the dark.

The ultimate 4K gaming monitor is now available in select markets. There are no indications that it is coming to Malaysia just yet, but we are expecting it to arrive in the Malaysian shores in the coming month or so. The local website also has not displayed any information on the new gaming monitor just yet. In that case, for more information, you might want to head to their UK website. The UK listing for it indicates that it is priced at GB£ 1,299 which is about MYR 7,057*. We can expect the monitor to set you back between MYR 6,999 to 7,599 when it arrives in Malaysia.
