YouTube Playables Expands, Bringing Casual Games Directly to the Platform in Select Regions

YouTube has been steadily expanding its offerings beyond video content, and its latest move caters to casual gamers. The platform recently announced the rollout of “Playables,” a feature that allows users to play a selection of lightweight games directly within the YouTube app or on their desktop browser.

Playables offers a convenient and accessible gaming experience. There’s no need to download additional apps or create new accounts. Users can simply browse the Playables shelf on the YouTube homepage or explore the new Playables destination page accessible from the Explore menu. Here, they’ll find a library of over 75 games, encompassing various genres like trivia, racing, arcade-style action, and word games.

The game selection leans towards casual titles suitable for short bursts of play. This aligns with YouTube’s core functionality, where users often consume content in bite-sized chunks. Whether waiting for a video to load or taking a break between clips, Playables offers a quick and engaging way to pass the time.

The games within Playables are built using HTML5 technology, ensuring broad compatibility across various devices. Users with Android smartphones and tablets running Android 14 (or higher) can access Playables directly within the YouTube app. Compatibility extends to select Android 10, 11, 12 and 13 devices with high memory or 64-bit processors. For iOS users, Playables is currently available on iPhone and iPad devices running iOS 14 and above within the YouTube app. Desktop users with Chrome, Safari, or Firefox can also access Playables through their web browsers. It’s also worth noting that Playables aren’t widely available at the time of writing. In Malaysia, trying to open the YouTube Playables page leads to a “Page not Available” screen.

While YouTube hasn’t disclosed specific details on monetization, some reports suggest these games might utilize in-app purchases or advertising. It’s important to note that parental controls are available within the YouTube app, allowing guardians to restrict access to inappropriate content or limit in-app purchases for younger users.

The initial rollout of Playables has garnered mixed reactions. Some users appreciate the convenience and variety of casual games offered, while others find the selection uninspired compared to dedicated mobile gaming platforms. Regardless, Playables represents an interesting new direction for YouTube, potentially attracting new users and keeping existing ones engaged within the platform’s ecosystem for longer.

As the feature progresses, it will be interesting to see if YouTube expands the game library, explores different genres, or integrates deeper social elements within Playables. Only time will tell if Playables evolves into a full-fledged gaming destination or remains a niche offering for casual gamers within the vast YouTube landscape.

The ROG Strix OLED XG27AQDMG steals the spotlight with its revolutionary glossy WOLED panel – the first of its kind in the gaming monitor market. Delta Emulator Forced to Change Logo As Adobe Goes on Offensive

The popular emulator, Delta, has undergone a sudden logo change, leaving some users scratching their heads. This unexpected update comes after the emulator received a legal threat from software giant Adobe.

Developed by Riley Testut, Delta has become a go-to option for iOS users seeking to relive classic video games from consoles like the Nintendo Entertainment System (NES) and Game Boy Advance (GBA). The emulator has made its way to Apple devices following a change in Apple’s App Store policies that allowed for emulators. Delta, in particular, allows users to play these games on their iPhones and iPads, offering a taste of retro gaming nostalgia on the go.

The recent logo change stems from a dispute with Adobe. According to reports, Adobe’s legal team contacted Testut, claiming the Delta logo bore a resemblance to its own logo, potentially causing confusion among consumers. While Delta’s logo represented a stylized Greek letter delta (Δ), Adobe argued the similarity could mislead users into believing the apps were connected.

Faced with the potential for legal action, Delta opted to avoid a lengthy battle and promptly changed its logo. The new logo, described as a “broken triangle,” is a clear departure from the previous design. While some users expressed amusement at the somewhat unconventional new icon, the change ensures Delta remains available on the App Store.

The Delta logo dispute is one of the more trivial issues that have been haunting the video game emulation space. There are bigger concerns when it comes to the legality of emulation as a whole when it comes to copyright, particularly because the game files (ROMs) are used to play the games on the emulator. Typically, users are responsible for acquiring these ROMs legally, often by dumping them from their own physical game cartridges.

Popular PSP Emulator, PPSSPP, Comes to the Apple App Store

iPhone and iPad users, you can now get your PSP fix! The highly-regarded PlayStation Portable (PSP) emulator, PPSSPP, has finally arrived on the official Apple App Store. This allows iOS users to experience a vast library of PSP titles on their devices.

Screenshot 2024 05 17 at 08 55 03 PPSSPP PSP emulator

Developed by Henrik Rydgård, PPSSPP has established itself as a popular and reliable PSP emulator across various platforms. Now, iOS users can join the party and relive cherished titles like God of War: Chains of Olympus, Gran Turismo, and Metal Gear Solid: Portable Ops. With PPSSPP readily available on the App Store, gamers can access a treasure trove of PSP classics, offering a nostalgic trip down memory lane.

PPSSPP boasts more than just bringing back fond memories. The emulator comes equipped with a range of features designed to optimize the mobile gaming experience. Users can customize controls to suit their preferences, leverage save states to pick up gameplay seamlessly, and even upscale graphics for a sharper visual experience.

It’s important to remember that PPSSPP itself doesn’t include any game files. Users are responsible for acquiring PSP game files (ISOs or CSOs) legally. Developers recommend dumping physical PSP games or downloading them from reputable sources that comply with copyright laws.

While the arrival of PPSSPP on the App Store is exciting news, it’s worth noting that this initial release has some limitations. Features like Magic Keyboard support for enhanced iPad gaming and Retro Achievements integration are temporarily unavailable. However, the developer assures users that these functionalities will be added in future updates.

Marvel Rivals Throws Your Favourite Characters into a PvP Shooter

Marvel and NetEase have just announced a brand new game – Marvel Rivals. The new PvP shooter will throw your favourite Marvel heroes and villains into the arena as Doctor Doom and his future counterpart wreak havoc on the timestream. The game leans into the familiar aesthetics and feel of games like Overwatch and Valorant. It will also feature an original story crafted by the team at NetEase.

Marvel Rivals | Official Announcement Trailer
Marvel Rivals Announcement Trailer

From what Marvel Games and NetEase have revealed, Marvel Rivals will be a third person shooter. The game will feature a robust roster of heroes and villians including familiar faces from The Avengers, Guardians of the Galaxy and even Marvel’s X-Men. Characters like Black Panther, Spider-Man, Magneto and Magik have already been revealed for the upcoming Alpha test scheduled for May.

01 team fight 12024marvelrivals

Gameplay seems to build on the PvP gameplay we’ve seen in games like Overwatch and Valorant. Players will be able to play as their favourite Marvel heroes and villains to take out the opposing. Think of it as having your own Civil War battles like in the movies or comics. The 6v6 setup will allow you to also create combo attacks and synergies between heroes. In the trailer, Marvel and NetEase showed off The Hulk powering up Iron Man with Gamma rays to produce a devastating blast and Rocket jumping on Groot to take on a group of enemies. There seems to be more hero synergies possible in the game which we will have to discover when the game launches.

Marvel Rivals will also feature a diverse and evolving set of maps. These will cover familiar places like Asgard to story specific places like Tokyo in 2099. As you play, you’ll also be able to use the environment to get an edge on your enemies. You’ll be able to corner enemies by taking down walls or even set traps as you prepare your hero synergy to deliver a devastating blow.

05 hero highlight 22024marvelrivals

The game is billed as a free to play game coming to the PC soon. So, if history is any indicator, we can expect some form of microtransaction for monetisation. Hopefully, it will be less offensive than NetEase’s mobile games. That said, Marvel Rivals will be available in Alpha starting May 2024. There’s no word on the actual release yet.
