Samsung Launches the Odyssey Ark – Let Samsung Take You on a Magical Gaming Journey

The world of large format gaming displays is not necessarily a crowded space. There is a good reason for that. When you buy a large format display like a TV, you want something that can at least project up to 4K in resolution. Anything lower than 4K with displays less than 40 inches can look rather weird and pixelated (the days of 1080p Full HD TVs are far behind us).

At the same time, while 4K TVs are abundant today, 4K gaming is not something that is easily accessible today. Well, when we say not easily accessible, we are mostly talking about PC gaming more than console gaming. Sure, the PlayStation 5 and latest Xbox Series X can easily play games at 4K resolution and boasts up to 120fps for displays that does 120Hz. But at the same time, not every game can run at that framerate at 4K resolution too.

In the world of PC gaming, 4K gaming is not unheard of, it is just rather rare. The most common high-end gaming set up in the world of PC gaming sports displays that tops out at 1440p at 165Hz these days. That is also because in the world where your display is no more than an arm’s length in front of you, you never really need anything that is more than 30 inches big and more than 1440p to look good. At the same time, the amount of money you want to spend on hardware that can run games at 4K resolution at up to 120fps always is ridiculous.

That does not mean that there is no such market though. For those with enough money to get something like an NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3090 and Intel’s latest 12th Generation Core i9 processor combinations, Samsung has something that will wet their beaks and make full use of their hardware. They have this, the Odyssey Ark.

The argument behind the Samsung Odyssey Ark is plenty simple. The idea is to make the best gaming display money can buy. They came up with a 55-inch behemoth that is curved at 1000R.

The 55-inch curved display sports Samsung’s highly acclaimed Quantum Matrix technology with Mini LEDs. With up to 14-bit processing, 16,384 black levels, your blacks look deep, and your images looks ultra-realistic. At 55-inch, you are going to be fully immersed in the game world too. At 1,000,000:1 contrast ratio with HDR10+, finding things in the darker areas of your map is a breeze.

It is not just a beautiful looking 4K display too. It is a super-fast display; it is a gaming display after all. It sports up to 165Hz in refresh rate. Its Grey-to-Grey response time is as low as 1ms for the fastest response you can get out of your display. It even supports AMD’s FreeSync Premium Pro for not just a tear free gaming experience, but also a super responsive one.

You might want to forget going for a VESA mount for this monitor. The stand it comes with is plenty enough to handle the weight of a 55-inch gaming monitor. It is also a tiltable base so that you can use it in what Samsung calls the “cockpit mode”. You flip the display vertically and it really wraps around your head.

A display this size also requires big sounds. Because it takes up so much space on your desk, you might want to not get a sound bar, or a speaker set up. This one offers you four speakers with Dolby Atmos certification. They call it the Sound Dome Technology with object tracking capabilities for the most immersive experience available.

Of course, it comes with its own Samsung TV style remote, because it is that big. It also comes with something called an Ark Dial. It is a smart remote thing that allows you quick and easy access over the TVs more prominent and more frequently accessed functions. At the same time, like the latest Samsung TVs, it comes with a One Connect Box for a much easier access to all its four HDMI 2.1 ports, LAN port, and USB ports.

The Samsung Odyssey is nothing short of breathtaking. It only comes in black, but it also has RGB strips on the top and bottom of the back plate. It does not matter though what colour the display comes in, the 55-inch curved Mini LED panel stands out like a sore thumb anyway. The Odyssey Ark is now available for pre-order in the United States of America (U.S.A.) and select regions. Malaysia? Not yet, but we can expect it to come pretty soon, since the 49-inch ultra-wide behemoth has already landed. In the U.S.A. it will set you back US$ 3,500 though, about MYR 15,631*, or the price of a very high-end, very big TV from the likes of Samsung. More information the Samsung Odyssey Ark can be found on their website.

Razer Unleashes the DeathAdder V3 Pro – The Best Got Better

Razer started out their life by making a particular mouse. The purpose of the mouse they made was also rather specific. It is made with performance in mind, it is made for gamers. It is made so that users of the mouse in question gets competitive advantage in games, be it multiplayer or single player games.

At that time, the term eSports did not exist. The PC gaming industry was at its infancy and there were plenty of games that could be competitive games, but most games were focused on individual players. The term multiplayer only existed a little later with LAN capable games like Counter Strike. The Counter Strike franchise at this point is one of the most popular gaming titles available and is one of the biggest competitive gaming titles.

Gaming peripherals grew with the rise of competitive gaming. Razer, one of the pioneers of gaming specific gears, thrived with that. Of course, their product list also grew. As technology improves too, so did their products. Today, there is a new kid on the block, and it could be their more spectacular gaming mouse to date.

They introduced their DeathAdder V3 Pro, a wireless gaming mouse that is made specifically for competitive gaming. In other words, the DeathAdder V3 Pro is made specifically for eSports.

It is lighter now, more than ever. The DeathAdder V3 Pro only weighs in at 63 grams (64g if you go for white colorway). It is ergonomically shaped to fit the contour of your right palm in the most natural way for more comfortable extended use cases. They have improved ergonomics here as well; everything has been raised a little to ensure that the wrist is more elevated and in a better position. The buttons, scroll wheels, and palm support is slightly moved and raised to ensure that everything is easily reachable. The grooves on the sides allow for better grip and tactility.

All of these are done and designed with inputs from top eSports athletes Razer has access to. The contours and grooves are basically the result of plentty of development work with eSports athletes. The reduction in weight is also a direct result of that collaboration, obviously.

While it is 25% lighter than before, it curiously boasts an extended battery life too. The built-in battery boasts up to 90 hours of use time. It is rechargeable via USB Type-C too, Razer also includes a Speedflex braided charging cable with the DeathAdder V3 Pro.

The DeathAdder V3 Pro packs Razer’s Focus Pro 30K Optical Sensor with up to 99.8% resolution accuracy for unrivaled speed and accuracy, even via wireless connection. The new sensor also packs AI Smart Tracking, Motion Sync, and Asymmetric Cut-Off for even better competitive experience in heated situations. The Optical Mouse Switches Gen-3 offers a zero double-clicking and no debounce relay to ensure that every click is registered as that, clicks, at the highest speeds for up to 90 million clicks.

Razer’s DeathAdder V3 Pro features low-latency response times too thanks to Razer’s HyperSpped Wireless technology. Thanks to the new Razer HyperPolling Wireless Technology, the DeathAdder V3 Pro supports a polling rate of 1000Hz at 1ms intervals for responsiveness and smoothness comparable to wired mice. If that is not fast enough, you can get Razer’s HyperPolling Wireless Dongle for up to 4000Hz wireless polling rate.

Samsung Introduces the Ultimate 4K gaming Display – The Samsung Odyssey Neo G8 is Here!

To be fair, this should have not come as a surprise. They did technically announce the product in CES 2022 earlier in the year. Yes, it is also the ultimate 4K gaming monitor, the best money can buy at this point. Then again, it is Samsung, they do the best or nothing.

Unlike other 4K displays though, this one is a little unique. Instead of a flat panel you might have expected from the regular 4K monitors, this one is curved at 1000R (1m radius). While others top out at HDR 1000, this one goes to HDR 2000. It does a brightness of up to 1000nits too, which is as bright as it gets for PC monitors currently.

It is a Quantum Mini LED (Quantum Matrix) technology panel, that is why it can achieve ridiculous brightness while maintaining 1,000,000:1 contrast ratio and HDR10+ colours. It is also a 10-bit panel capable of up to 1-billion colours to begin with. That allows the display to have a 95% of DCI-P3 colour gamut coverage. We are guessing that the 5% coverage is lost to the glare reduction matte treatment that is typical of gaming monitors.

As if all these things are not enough to make it easily the best-looking gaming panel at this point, Samsung has also decided to make it the fastest available in its class. It features 240Hz in refresh rate, not like any GPU can run AAA games at 4K @240fps at this point (maybe CS:GO). It is good future proofing though. At the same time, it features 1ms of Grey-to-Grey response time for the ultimate FPS experience.

At such high frame rates, tearing could be a thing with these games. For that, the Odyssey Neo G8 supports AMD FreeSync Premium Pro that minimises tearing in CPU intensive games. It even works with NVIDIA G-Sync GPUs.

For some extra gamer feel, the Odessey monitors come with an RGB ring out the back. The new Neo G8 comes with something they call the CoreSync. It only displays five different colours. The display automatically detects the dominant colour that is displayed in the middle of the monitor and then changes the CoreSync colour accordingly to add to the immersiveness when gaming in the dark.

The ultimate 4K gaming monitor is now available in select markets. There are no indications that it is coming to Malaysia just yet, but we are expecting it to arrive in the Malaysian shores in the coming month or so. The local website also has not displayed any information on the new gaming monitor just yet. In that case, for more information, you might want to head to their UK website. The UK listing for it indicates that it is priced at GB£ 1,299 which is about MYR 7,057*. We can expect the monitor to set you back between MYR 6,999 to 7,599 when it arrives in Malaysia.

AMD’s Adrenalin Now Includes Support for Noise Suppression

AMD has just released their latest software. The current AMD Sofware: Adrenalin Edition 22.7.1, as they know it, packs AMD’s latest latest drivers for their Ryzen CPUs and Radeon GPUs. AMD’s Adrenalin software is also the nerve center for everything that is AMD on your PC.

The latest edition of the Adrenalin comes with a new feature that makes your Radeon GPU more than just a graphics processor. It turns it into a rather clever machine learning accelerator that helps with a rather specific function. It helps with voice recognition-ish.

Before we go into that though, the Adrenalin software also brought a few updates to AMD’s suite of GPUs. For starters, AMD’s RX 6400, RX 6500 XT, RX 6800 XT and RX 6950 XT GPUs have received a performance boost for 4K Fabulous settings in Minecraft. AMD is claiming up to 92% in performance improvements for the game. AMD has also extended support for their Super Resolution technology to RX 5000 and RX 6000 discrete GPUs for notebooks. Radeon Boost support has also been extended to games like Elden Ring, VALORANT, and Resident Evil Village.

On top of all these performance boosts for various GPUs, AMD has also added a new feature called AMD Noise Suppression. If you are familiar with NVIDIA’s RTX Voice, this is something similar. It also utilises AMD’s Radeon GPUs for machine learning applications specifically in voice processing and noise suppression. Yes, it is what it sounds like, a noise suppression engine.

It is supposed to work with any PC that has an AMD Radeon RX 6000 series GPU or Ryzen 5000 series CPU with integrated GPU. It is also supposed to work with any mic you have installed on your mic. What it does is allow its users to channel clearer and cleaner voice over team chats or even in meetings. It uses its own unique algorithms to achieve this effect, they did not specify what their implementation methods are though.

AMD’s latest Software: Adrenalin Edition 22.7.1 is now available for download from AMD’s website. You can also read all about the new software via their release notes here. Of course, if you want to take advantage of AMD’s latest software and features, you do want to ensure that you have AMD’s latest and greatest.

The Razer Deathstalker V2 – Razer’s Ultimate Low-Profile Keyboard Comes for Round 2

Razer’s gaming peripherals are some of the most highly acclaimed products in the world of gaming. Sure, there are some products that is plagued with build quality issues. Razer as a brand is always associated with premium gaming peripherals though.

One of the most highly acclaimed peripherals in their stables is their Razer Deathstalker keyboard. It is a low-profile keyboard with chiclet style keys that struck well with Razer’s fans. The low-profile keyboard is designed to be as comfortable as possible to game on and to work with.

The first Deathstalker rolled out in 2014. The Deathstalker is now about eight years old now. Time for an upgrade, a version 2.

Top Class Connectivity
Source: Razer

The Deathstalker V2 line-up, as Razer calls it, is the evolution of the concept that was the original Deathstalker. It is still a low-profile keyboard, like the original. Except, the Deathstalker V2 line-up is also choke full of Razer’s eight years’ worth of R&D.

One of the new innovations packed into the latest Razer Deathstalker is also Razer’s latest. With the Deathstalker V2, Razer introduces their new low-profile optical switches. It still works like their original optical switches. It relies on an infra-red beam within the switches to register the keypresses at lightspeeds. The technology ensures that the keyboard is as responsive as it can be in gaming applications and even better typing experience.

Low-profile does not mean that the keyboard must feel less stellar than regular switches. It still features up to 1.2mm actuation point and 2.8mm of total travel. The two options, the Linear and Clicky variants of the switches also offer super light actuation force for speedy responses in intense gaming battles. The Linear actuates at 45 grams, while the Clicky variant actuates at 50 grams at 1.5mm actuation point. Razer also says that the switches can last up to 70 million key presses, supposedly 40% better than their competitors.

Ultra Slim Casing

While the older Deathstalker comes with an attached wrist rest that cannot be removed. The new one does not. It is a low-profile keyboard designed to ensure that users do not need a wrist rest even in extended usage conditions. To ensure that the keyboard lasts a long time, the plate is made from 5052 aluminium material. It is there for that ‘thock’ as well, of course.

Topping everything off is a rather unique keycap. Of course, they have to be low-profile keycaps, just to fit the whole ‘low-profile’ look and feel. The keycaps are laser etched caps with a special coating to ensure that it is fade and scratch resistant, even more so than doubleshot PBT keycaps, according to Razer.

Of course, thanks to huge advancements in wireless technology, the Razer Deathstalker V2 Pro and Deathstalker V2 Pro Tenkeyless comes with Razer’s Hyperspeed Wireless technology. Razer’s proprietary wireless technology ensures that the keyboard offers the lowest latencies even in wireless mode for a cable-like experience without the fuss of cable managing. If not, it offers Bluetooth 5.0 connectivity as well for low latency and extra stable connections with up to 3 devices at once.

The Deathstalker V2 Pro offers up to 40 hours of battery life. The Tenkeyless version offers even more battery life at 50 hours. No need to replace the batteries, they are both charge via a USB Type-C port. Of course, the Type-C cable can also be used as the main connection to your PC as well. Of course, the Deathstalker V2 line-up also comes with Razer’s Chroma RGB controllable via their Razer Synapse 3 software on the PC.

No FTs in Minecraft – Mojang Studios Takes a Stance on in-game NFTs

If you have not heard of non-fungible tokens (NFTs), you should really go out from your house and start talking to your friends. It is one of the most ‘in’ things today. Thanks to advancements and creative use in technology, the art scene has been in a completely different high in the modern world. When we say art, we are not completely referring to the traditional art market. NFTs refer to specialized digital art that is uniquely made with their own identifier thanks to blockchain technology.

While NFTs is the hottest trend in the digitally ‘woke’ world today, it is a highly disputed technology. Plenty questions its validity and hype comparing it to the rise and fall of cryptocurrencies. There are also plenty of discussions on whether NFTs should have a place in gaming industry too. The concept of blockchain based gaming is not a new one, as well as NFT assets in games. Games like Axie Infinity is a good example of NFT based gaming that works around the assets itself. There are also games in development that built itself around NFT ownership and trade as well currently.

Not everyone agrees with the presence of NFTs in games though. One of them is Mojang studios, the people behind one of the most successful game franchises we know today, Minecraft. According to a very recent post on Mojang’s Minecraft blog, they have stated that they are not allowing NFTs to be part of the game to protect its users. They also see NFT as a rather exclusive asset that might not align to their policy to ensure that the game is inclusive to all kinds of players.

The idea of NFTs in Minecraft, while seems rather interesting, was not concocted by Mojang themselves. It is an implementation by other NFT based companies to show that they can generate unique collectibles, world files, and skin packs in the Minecraft world. The implementation also allows users to earn NFTs through activities inside and outside of the game itself.

While having unique assets is a noble idea in Minecraft, they say that they do not want to create an environment where scarcity and exclusion becomes a culture within Minecraft. Minecraft also has its own marketplace that allows players to sell their own creations for others to use. Minecraft also allows players to charge for access to their servers. All players have the same level of access to functionalities and available contents throughout the game. NFTs goes completely against that concept, according to Mojang. Therefore, NFTs should not have its place in the Minecraft game at this time.

Mojang is not completely against the idea of blockchain in Minecraft though. Mojang says that they will be paying close attention to how blockchain technology progresses. The idea is to implement blockchain within the game that complies to their concept of inclusivity and other practical use cases in gaming. They also re-iterated that they are not planning to implement blockchain within Minecraft currently.

Alienware Unleashes AMD Advantage m17 R5

Alienware should not be a name that is unfamiliar to gamers. They are, technically, the biggest name in gaming PC before gaming PCs become mainstream. They are still one of the most recognizable names in the industry. Today, they are known to make some of the most desirable gaming PCs in the market currently. They are also known to make some of the most extreme gaming PCs in the modern gaming era. It is no wonder then that they released the new Alienware m17 R5, one of the most powerful AMD Advantage gaming laptops you can find in the market today.

AMD Advantage

Before we go one, let us recap what AMD Advantage means. The first requirement for a gaming laptop to be recognized as an AMD Advantage gaming laptop is obviously being equipped with AMD’s latest Ryzen 5000 series CPU paired with their latest Radeon RX 6000 series GPU. There are few more things in the checklist too.

The laptop must pack AMD’s FreeSync Premium technology as standard for a tear free experience on a display with at least 144Hz refresh rate and capable of more than 300 nits in brightness and less than 3ms of response rate. Of course, with both AMD’s CPU and GPU working together, AMD’s SmartShift and Smart Access Memory must come as standard too on the gaming PC. To ensure that speed is not an issue, DDR5 memory and Gen4 M.2 SSDs come as standard on AMD Advantage laptops.

Its body must be thin and light enough that you can lug it around without breaking your back. The built-in fans within the svelte body also has to be powerful enough to keep everything at a controlled temperature even in heavy loads. In short, an AMD Advantage laptop cannot be thermal throttling from poor thermals.

You can also spec it up with up to 64GB of DDR5 RAM with up to 4TB in SSD storage. Yes, they are Gen4 PCIe NVMe units for 5GB/s read speeds. To top it all off, Alienware has fitted the new m17 R5 with the fastest laptop display you can get your hands-on in the market today. You can choose between a fast 480Hz refresh rate Full HD panel and a high-resolution 4K panel at 120Hz refresh rate. The display panel is also a Dolby Vision certified panel for the best-in-class HDR gaming experience on the large display.

Of course, with AMD Advantage certification you get all of AMD’s most premium features for the ultimate gaming experience. You get AMD’s SmartShift Max to ensure that the Alienware m17 R5 extracts the maximum battery life by cleverly switching between the Radeon GPU and integrated APU for different requirements. AMD’s SmartAccess Graphics allows the PC to cleverly optimise frame rates, reduce latency, and optimise battery life by enabling either the discrete GPU or APU to render and present your games while AMD FreeSync works. AMD’s Smart Access Memory, which should be a familiar thing by now, allows your Ryzen processors to harness the full potential of the Radeon GPUs. Of course, AMD’s FreeSync Premium keeps your games tear free and smooth on your display. To keep everything fresh and cool, Alienware fitted the 17-incher with Cryo-tech cooling technology with an enlarged vapor chamber for the GPU.

Price and Availability

There are currently no confirmations on when the device will arrive in Malaysia yet. Obviously, there are no word on pricing as well currently. For more information on the new Alienware m17 R5, you can head over to their website.

Gaming Tesla – Coming Soon with Steam

When you think electric car, you think Tesla. When you think gaming, you do not really think Tesla. You think PCs, you think gaming consoles, you think Steam. But gaming and Tesla has a place in the same sentence.

The Tesla is not really a technological marvel. It is a step in the right direction for the automotive industry. They are currently still the largest electric automaker in the world. Traditional automakers like BMW, Mercedes-Benz, and even Porsche have been working overtime mostly to play catch up for now. At least that is the case on the surface.

We are not talking about other automakers though. We are talking about Tesla. We are also talking about gaming.

You can technically game in a Tesla. The expansive touch sensitive display that is found in Tesla autocars are pretty much its control center. The interface you get from the display is the Tesla’s nerve center, control hub. It is also the entertainment hub for your car. Usually, in a car, you can expect media players and some form of navigation software. In a Tesla you can find games too.

You can play rather traditional simple games like Solitaire and even Chess. You can even find Missile Command and Super Breakout, cult classics that will feature long lines in any arcade. Then there is something that comes from the modern era of gaming; Beach Buggy Racing 2. You even get Sonic the Hedgehog in a Tesla. Tesla, in this case, is not new to gaming.

What will be new though is Steam on a Tesla. This might sound like a surprising bit of news. Thing is, it should not be.

Steam has announced their very own gaming console in the Steam Deck. The console mimics the handling style that is the ever so popular Nintendo Switch, except it is a lot more advanced. It is also obviously heavier, and bulkier too, since it is built to be a gaming PC in a handheld chassis.

The Steam Deck, however much less powerful it will be against regular gaming PC towers, is purpose built for gaming with Steam on board though. That also means that games should run smoothly on the Steam Deck still, as long as they are optimized. How would that work on a Tesla?

Tesla’s center control, its nerve center, is rather powerful. The Tesla Model X and Model S’s center unit runs on AMD’s Ryzen CPU and it also packs a powerful RDNA-2 GPU, the same one you can find on the latest gaming consoles. That means that these cars are practically gaming consoles attached in a car. As long as games are optimized, they should be able to run on a Tesla with acceptable graphics quality at least.

https://twitter.com/elonmusk/status/1548085294188019717?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw”&gt

Of course, there is no confirmation on Whether Steam will find a home in your Tesla. The announcement was made by Elon Musk on his twitter account. He also claims that a demo is coming in the coming month. There are no announcement or confirmations on Steam as well currently. Until then, this could just be rumours.

Why Payments Are the Key to the Gaming Industry in Asia Pacific

The gaming industry is booming, and Asia is its centre. But it’s also becoming more competitive. And with payments increasingly being baked into the player experience, getting this fundamental element right is even more critical.

The growth of gaming over the past three years has been rapid, and there are no signs that this trend will slow down any time soon. Like many digital shifts, the COVID-19 pandemic accelerated a pre-existing trend as consumers spent more leisure time at home, on smartphones or games consoles.

For gaming publishers, this has obviously been a huge boost to the industry. Globally gaming industry revenue is predicted to grow from USD$178bn in 2021 to USD$269bn in 2025, an increase of 51% in just five years. And this is especially true in Asia, which leads the world in its number of active gamers. Almost half of all gaming revenue came from Asian markets pre-COVID-19 and this percentage has been maintained despite the growth of gaming globally in the past two years.

The Role of Payments

Another major trend in gaming is a shift in the way that consumers pay for them. The old model of buying games outright in a single one-off purchase is now outdated in the majority of cases; subscriptions and in-app purchasing have become the norm for games on all platforms, from mobile games through to many of the major titles on the most popular consoles.

Source: StockVault
Source: StockVault

This trend has given publishers much greater scope when it comes to monetizing the games that they produce. But it also means that payments are now a much more integral element to the overall player experience than before, and therefore need to be considered much more carefully.

When thinking about payments in gaming, there are three primary factors that need to be considered:

  • Invisibility – Ultimately players don’t want to go through the process of making payments when it means interrupting the game they are playing. So any payment needs to be as quick and painless as possible to encourage them to do it frequently.
  • Security – But at the same time, any game’s checkout process must be safe. Games have been proven to be a target for scammers in the past who have viewed the industry as an easy target.
  • Choice – The payments landscape is becoming more diverse, and in-game payment options need to reflect that. Consumers are increasingly unprepared to spend money online if they cannot use their payment method of choice, particularly those that have developed into regional payment preferences.

Let’s look at these in more detail, particularly what they mean for gaming companies in the Asian market.

The impact of poor UX, card declines, and inefficient risk management

As we have already stated, one of the key criteria for the success of payments in gaming is that transactions such as subscriptions and in-app purchases are seamless to the point of being invisible. A clunky user experience with multiple verification steps is one way checkouts can fail in this objective.

Multi-step authentication processes, high lag times or time-outs, or hidden costs can make a payments experience frustrating to such an extent that the consumer abandons the transaction and in extreme circumstances could stop them playing the game altogether. And research does suggest that APAC consumers have the highest rates of cart abandonment in the world generally, meaning gaming companies in the region must focus on giving players a best-in-class payment experience.

Even more significant can be the impact of payment declines. If a player cannot complete a transaction because their card payment is declined then this completely de-rails their gaming experience. A declined transaction not only has a negative effect on revenues for gaming companies that lose the individual transaction in the short term but also the frustration this causes players may render the game unplayable in the long term, costing the operator recurring payments from loyal customers.

Partnering with a payments partner that minimises abandoned transactions and their associated costs is critical. Some of the criteria gaming partners should consider include:

  1. Does the payments company connect me to local acquiring and enable smart routing to maximize acceptance rates?
  2. Does the payments company prevent mass declines of legitimate transactions and limit false positives through industry and regional expertise in risk management?
  3. If a legitimate transaction is declined due to human error or oversight e.g. a card used for a recurring transaction expires, does the payments company have capabilities in place to recover the transaction?

Fighting fraud

Unfortunately, gaming platforms have long been a target for fraudsters. This threat has increased in the past two years as bad actors were better able to hide in plain sight due to the increase in player numbers more generally. Card-not-present fraud (where a fraudster uses stolen card details to make a transaction) and friendly fraud (where a consumer uses their own card details to make a legitimate transaction and then claims a chargeback) are both frequent in gaming, including in APAC.

Another practice gaming publishers should be aware of is carding, where a fraudster steals credit card information and tests its usability by making one or a number of small transactions at a relatively insecure platform, before moving on to making more substantial transactions elsewhere. In-game purchases have been a traditional target of these types of fraud.

Offering seamless gameplay via in-app purchases and subscriptions without compromising the safety of the platform or players must be a priority. A risk management platform with real-time, highly configurable, fraud detection and scoring engine capabilities is the optimal solution to maximise protection.

Diversifying Checkout

The APAC region is a diverse landscape when it comes to payment preferences, with local digital wallets being particularly popular. And it isn’t only the region as a whole that has marked payment preferences; within APAC, individual countries have their own local payment methods that have proved to be popular with consumers. So for gaming companies with ambitions to expand their player base throughout the region, having more options to enable players to pay is essential.

This is particularly true because we know that there are several key payment methods that are important to consumers in many APAC countries. AliPay and WeChat are obvious examples in China, but countries such as Malaysia, Thailand and Indonesia all have diverse payment landscapes that do not rely on card transactions.

According to research conducted by Mastercard, 94% of consumers in APAC are thinking about trying an alternative payment method for the first time in 2022 and 84% said they already had access to more payment methods than they did in 2020. This includes crypto; 45% of APAC consumers are considering using crypto for payments in 2022 vs. only 12% that said they had used crypto to make a payment in 2020.

And globally younger consumers tend to be less reliant on traditional payment methods such as debit and credit cards than older generations. More tech-savvy and less loyal to financial institutions such as banks, these consumers will happily switch payment methods to ones that offer a better user experience. As gamers tend to skew towards younger demographics as well, having a diversified checkout is even more important.

And APAC continues to lead the world when it comes to the sizes of the gaming industry market. But there is a route to making the most of the opportunities a booming industry provides, and that begins with payments.

Working with a payments partner that doesn’t offer you a one-size-fits-all solution and instead can tailor a customized platform that suits your business strategy and needs is essential in today’s market. This is especially true in a region such as APAC with so many individuals, and unique markets. Gaming businesses
