Cisco Networking Academy Looks to Equip 141,000 Malaysians with Digital Skills

Cisco is one of the world’s leading companies when it comes to networking technology. The Networking Academy started back in 1997 and is now proudly boasting over 3 million students annually 25 years later. Malaysia has the unique honour of being one of the first countries to see the rollout of Cisco’s Networking Academy in 1999. Having been in Malaysia for over 20 years, it comes as no surprise that the company is looking to empower 141,000 Malaysians over the next 10 years. Our current job landscape is quickly evolving. In fact, it’s expected that by 2025, a total of 85 million jobs would have been displaced with 97 million new jobs that we’ve never seen before emerging in that same period. These new jobs will emerge in the wake of new technologies like 5G and the deployment of AI across industries. iQIYI’s New Malaysian Show “Sorry Naik Lori” Seamlessly Integrates Branding & Story Telling

Realising these trends, iQIYI has partnered with food delivery provider and app, foodpanda, to marry entertainment and branding with their latest series “Sorry Naik Lori”.

The new series is a first-of-its-kind collaboration between iQIYI and food panda in which the two companies worked from the bottom up to integrate foodpanda’s branding and app in the series. This process started with a collaboration between iQIYI, foodpanda and Universal McCann in developing the scripting and concept for the series. In the end, they produced a quintessentially Malaysian tale that tells the story of a husband and wife as they pursue two different versions of success.

“Sorry Naik Lori” follows the misadventures of Khairul, a young lorry driver living in Penang who is averse to Social Media and his wife, Nadia, who dreams of becoming a successful social media influencer. Nadia stumbles upon success when she becomes “ComelPasembur” when a NikNok video of her at her mother’s Pasembur restaurant goes viral. As her following grows, she is approached by a talent agency and decides to pursue her dreams against her husband’s wishes. This forces Khairul to learn to navigate the world of social media as he tries to keep his marriage alive while Nadia is forced to hide her marriage in pursuit of social media stardom.

The series also integrates a foodpanda rider, Talib, played by Tajul. The character not only plays a role in foodpanda’s brand integration into the series but also helps further the plot and misadventures in the slice-of-life rom-com.

The series is steeped in the Malay culture of Malaysia’s most popular island – Penang. Everything from the mannerisms and dialect used in “Sorry Naik Lori” is infused with typical Penangite flavours. The series stars Nizam Othman as Khairul and Ruhainies as Nadia. They are supported by a notable cast which includes local singer, Tajul, TikToker Ahmad Saffuan, Nafiz Muaz, Sheila Mambo and Asha Zainul.

Google is taking steps to enhance privacy protections and personalisation when it comes to the ad experience on their platforms. Yes – it’s not everyday that you see these two things in the same sentence but Google is trying to make them go hand in hand with their new My Ads Center.

The new My Ads Center will be rolling out to users around the world today. With Google’s new My Ads Center, users will be given more control of their ads experience on Google platforms than ever before. In fact, Google is providing the option to remove ad personalisations all together. However, they note that this option will not turn off ads, it will just serve less relevant ads.

So, how does My Ads Center affect user experience moving forward? It’s pretty simple, you will see ads that are relevant to you on your terms. At least that’s what Google is working towards. Users will be able to access My Ads Center in the Ads Settings menu in their Google account. Inside, you will have multiple options to customise your experience including ad categories, brands and your recent ads. Using these, you will be able to start customising your ads across all of Google’s platforms.

Google is reiterating its commitment to protecting user privacy. The company is reiterating that they “follow a set of core privacy principles that guide what information we do and don’t collect. We never sell your personal information to anyone, and we never use the content you store in apps like Gmail, Photos and Drive for ads purposes. And we never use sensitive information to personalize ads — like health, race, religion or sexual orientation.

The new My Ads Center is, according to Google, a step further in fulfilling its commitments to protecting user privacy. It is – to date – one of the most transparent experiences when it comes to showing users what data are being collected and how it is being used; at least when it comes to ads.

LEVEL UP KL 2022 Reinvigorates Malaysian Gaming Industry

This year’s edition of LEVEL UP KL saw over 1,500 participants, 80 speakers and over 100 exhibitors from all around the world. The conference also saw the participation of developers such as Streamline Studios, Metronomik, Larian Studios, Bandai Namco and PlayStation Studios. The conference saw these studios, among others, sharing their approaches to developing industry-leading games and the techniques they used behind the scenes.

Additionally, LEVEL UP KL was, once again, ground zero for the SEA Game Jam and SEA Game Awards. The former saw young, aspiring gamers put their mettle to the test in an arduous competition to build a game in a mere 48 hours. These aspiring developers had their hard work shown off at the exhibition in LEVEL UP KL 2022 among the many industry leaders present there.

MDEC Forges Key Partnerships at LEVEL UP KL 2022

Amidst the furore and celebration of LEVEL UP KL 2022, the Malaysian Digital Economy Corporation (MDEC) also announced the forging of new partnerships which are geared toward positioning Malaysia as the regional game development hub. These partnerships not only forge open markets between Malaysia and other game development industries worldwide but also mark MDEC’s first steps into exploring the viability of the Metaverse in the Malaysian Gaming Industry.

MDEC signed a partnership memorandum of understanding (MoU) with Nine66, a gaming company based in Saudi Arabia to explore and promote collaboration between the gaming industry in both countries. The MoU covers areas such as talent development and co-development.

Aside from Nine66, MDEC also signed an MoU with SEA Gamer Mall (SEAGM) to launch the Malaysia Game Fest (MGF). The Malaysia Game Fest will span a period of three months starting in October 2022 until December 2022. During this period, MDEC will be driving efforts with SEAGM to promote local game products and increase the commercialisation of Intellectual Properties (IPs) across Southeast Asian platform partners.

Finally, MDEC signed an MoU with Magnus Games Studio, a home-grown game studio to promote initiatives and projects involving the “Metaverse”. In this agreement, MDEC will be leveraging Magnus Games’ Metaverse to market and promote the upcoming Malaysia Digital Content Festival 2022 which will be happening on the 17th and 18th of December 2022 at the Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre.

Continuing the Pace of Government Innovation in a Post-Pandemic World

The unprecedented disruption the world faced during the past two years forced governments to rewrite the rulebook on how they serve their citizens. During the COVID-19 pandemic, public sector organizations across Asia Pacific and Japan (APJ) had to act quickly to find digital solutions to everyday challenges to keep citizens safe and productive. Enabled by cloud technology, digitized government agencies became better equipped to offer citizen, educational, and healthcare services, which helped improve and even save lives. 

As we emerge from the crisis, the experience, momentum, and lessons learned have heightened potential for leaders to drive digitization as a priority to deliver their national agendas. Public sector organizations across APJ are pivoting from the pandemic and looking ahead to how digital transformation enabled by cloud can help to seize opportunities to deliver faster, more innovative, and modernized citizen services.

Scaling Digitization for Public Sector Organizations

According to a Gartner survey in 2021, digitally advanced government organizations realize more benefits of modernization, including higher efficiency, cost reductions, greater workforce productivity, compliance, and transparency. Research by Amazon Web Services (AWS) Cloud Economics shows that AWS customers in ASEAN – across commercial and public sectors – who migrated to AWS are seeing an acceleration in innovation, with an approximate 29% reduction in time-to-market for new features and applications, about 41% increase in employee efficiency, and an improvement of about 37% in operational resiliency through less downtime of services.

In the last year, AWS has signed six government cloud services agreements across APJ to boost digitization, supporting these governments with our network of local partners as they move their customers and themselves to the cloud, including Malaysia, and Thailand in ASEAN. These initiatives help governments save lives, provide critical citizen services, and support learner outcomes – ultimately changing the way society engages, educates, and does business for good. They also enable opportunities for local businesses on the AWS Partner Network to work closely with public sector customers to solve some of the biggest community challenges.

Enabling Security, Resilience, and Continuity through the Cloud

Aside from accelerating the speed and scale of digitization, leveraging the cloud also ensures security, resilience, and continuity. This creates a safe and reliable environment for students to learn, employees to work remotely, and citizens to access government services and healthcare.

In Indonesia, when the Bali Provincial Government launched its Smart Island initiative to transform the Indonesian island into a digital province, the Communication, Information, and Statistics Agency of Bali (Diskominfos) migrated its data to AWS cloud from an on-premises infrastructure. Launching an attendance system using machine learning technology, it enabled 19,820 public service employees to sign in to the office virtually, saving almost 69% in monthly costs for its attendance system. Many of Bali’s other critical applications are also built using AWS solutions, including a traditional village census system, a health facility oxygen monitoring system, and an asset management system.

By digitally transforming on the cloud, the public sector can rapidly scale services to meet spikes in demand, wind-down operations to reduce costs, and innovate widely using the latest cloud technology.

More Digital Skills Needed to Support Digitization

As the digitization momentum accelerates, governments across APJ will also need to prioritize digital skills training for their workforce in order to unlock the cloud’s full potential. The recent “Building Skills for the Changing Workforce” report produced by AWS and AlphaBeta shows that Australia, India, Indonesia, Japan, New Zealand, Singapore, and South Korea will need to train an estimated 86 million more workers in digital skills collectively over the next year to keep pace with technological advancements – equivalent to 14% of their current total workforce. The report also noted that three of the five most demanded digital skills by 2025 will be cloud-related.

In Thailand, the Ministry of Digital Economy and Society is collaborating with AWS to train more than 1,200 public sector employees with cloud skills, so they can implement cloud technologies at scale, make better data-driven business decisions, and innovate new services to drive improved outcomes for citizens. In Indonesia, its Information and Communication Technology Training and Development Center (BPPTIK Kominfo) worked with AWS to get its employees up to speed on cloud knowledge, in support of Indonesia’s goal of creating a pool of about 9 million digital professionals by 2030 as part of its national digital information agenda. And in Malaysia, AWS has worked to provide cloud training for the Malaysian Administration Modernization and Management Planning Unit (MAMPU) to help accelerate their cloud use and fulfil mission-critical needs.  This is in addition to the training of over 3.5 million users across Asia Pacific since 2018.

Looking ahead, we will need to move beyond business as usual to close the skills gap and create conditions for successful digitization. Governments, educators, and industries across APJ will need to collaborate more closely than ever to give all individuals the opportunity to build and deepen their digital skills that will support digitization momentum now and in the future.

Closer Collaboration Needed to Unlock the Potential of APJ

As societies and communities across APJ continue to evolve, organizations of all kinds – from governments to industries to non-profits – will need to come together to solve some of the biggest issues we are facing, from helping marginalized communities to addressing climate change.

This is why AWS launched Cloud Innovation Centers (CIC), to serve as a platform for public and private sector organizations to collaborate, solve challenges, and test new ideas with AWS’s technology expertise. In Singapore, AWS is partnering with East Coast Town Council and Accenture on a six-month pilot to deploy cloud-powered sustainability solutions in municipal estate management, to support Singapore’s move towards its net zero carbon emissions goal by 2040.

We encourage collaborations between governments, industry, and cloud services providers to enable long-term scaling of digital programs. The momentum has been established, so let’s continue to ride the wave and work together to keep digitization at the forefront of the region’s push for progress as we pivot from pandemic to prosperity.

DJI Enterprise launches the Mavic 3E and Mavic 3T – Not Your Average Mavic 3 

DJI’s Mavic 3 launched a few months back. It is, in our opinions, one of DJI’s most innovative product to date. The feature packed compact drone is really a demonstration of DJI’s technological superiority when it comes to drone technology.

While compact drones like the Mavic 3 have its roots found in the demand in the end-user segment for aerial photography and videography, it holds more potential that goes beyond just amateur filmography. Thanks to its lightweight and compact construction, the industrial application could be limitless for a Mavic 3.  

The Mavic 3 for enterprises comes in two flavors, the Mavic 3E and Mavic 3T. The difference? You get a thermal enabled camera on the Mavic 3T while the Mavic 3E boasts a powerful camera system that allows you to accurately map out an area or pinpoint points of interest with 56x hybrid zoom. The thermal camera on the Mavic 3T allows you to also pinpoint subjects of interest via heat signatures. At the same time, the Mavic 3T packs a 28x side-by-side digital zoom for even better accuracy in detecting subjects and comparison.

Thanks to DJI’s know how in long-range remote technology, the drones can be flown up to 15km away from base (remote). They call the technology DJI O3 Enterprise Transmission and it is even more powerful than the antennas you can find on any consumer grade DJI products. The technology also allows users to view its feed live at 1080p/30fps with minimal interruption.  

The Mavic 3 for pro-sumers is already a potent drone with state-of-the-art safety features and measures. The one for Enterprises gets all the same innovative features for safer and easier flight. Sony’s Latest FX30 is the New Compact Super 35 4K Camera for the Future, Or So They Say

You may say that cinema cameras are a little unnecessary. In most cases, you will be right, they offer very little in terms of photography in both professional and enthusiast segments. Unlike regular photography cameras, they are much bulkier too. Not to mention, they are a lot more expensive to work with while not offering much more in terms of pixel count. Your smartphones today can shoot at up to 8K resolution, or 4K 120fps. So why is Sony’s latest FX30 important? 

It is important simply because it is one of the most compact cinema cameras to come off Sony’s production line. We want to say that the FX30 is technically the spiritual successor to the Sony FX3 introduced a few years ago. While it contains all the right traits to be one, it is a unique camera on its own though.  

The Sony FX3 was technically a repackaged Sony α7S III in a cinema camera guise. It featured a larger body that is also a different colour (grey instead of black). The larger body houses bigger heatsinks and fans to dissipate heat more effectively from the 12-Megapixel sensor that shoots videos at 4K 120fps (up to). The FX30 is different.

The Sony FX30 packs a more powerful (technnically speaking) video sensor that pushes 20.1-Megapixel instead of the 12 that the FX3 has. It is not a full-frame sensor like the FX3 though. Instead, it is an APS-C Exmor R SMOS sensor with back-illumination that offers a rather high ISO sensitivity.  

The APS-C sensor also means that the camera shoots at Super 35 format by default. At that, the camera oversamples the footages from 6K at up to 60fps to scale it down to 4K formats. You can even get the camera to shoot at 120fp (4K) or 240fps (Full HD) if you want that extra smooth feel or that beautiful looking slow motions. Of course, all these are shot at 10-bit 4:2:2 internally. If you have an external recorder that is capable, you can output to 4K 16-bit RAW formats.  

With the latest Sony cameras, you want to shoot videos at S-Log3 for even more details and vibrant footage than before with colour grading. Sony’s cinema line-up of cameras offers ever better gamma settings though. You get something called the S-Cinetone for Sony’s signature cinematic look in combination with BIONZ XR engine.

Of course, the BIONZ XT engine also means you get a full suite of Sony’s clever technology for its Alpha cameras. Real-time Eye AF tracking for humans, animals, and birds allows you to keep your subject in full focus quickly no matter where they go within the frame. In combination with AF Assist, autofocusing in a compact camera has never been this easy. There is even a Focus Map that allows the camera to compensate for breathing effects and set your depth of field before you take your final shot. For run-and-gun situations, the Active Mode works with the built-in 5-axis stabilizer with time code synchronization for rock steady footages even in freehand shooting situations.  

Alongside the FX30, Sony launches two new CFexpress Type A cards. You can now get the XFexpress Type A card in 320GB and 640GB flavours in addition to the current 80GB and 160GB variants. Like the existing cards, the CFexpress Type A cards offer 700 MB/s write speeds, which is overkill considering that 4K 120fps videos only writes at up to 400 MB/s at the maximum. The new TOUGH cards are also IP57 water and dust resistant.  

The Sony FX30 comes in the FX30 and FX30B variants. Bost will be available November onward in Malaysia. There is no official pricing detail for Malaysia just yet, but we are keeping our ears close to the ground for that. DHL Malaysia Goes Green with Electric Delivery Vans for Last Mile Deliveries

Going Green and being sustainable is all the rage now as corporations continue to find their footing in a market where consumers continue to look for more sustainable goods and services. While there have been many companies who have been boasting about their “green” efforts, not many have done anything tangible or impactful. In Malaysia, DHL is joining the ranks of those who have tangibly implemented policies and followed through. The company will be deploying electric vehicles (EVs) for their last-mile deliveries starting in October 2022.

DHL will be kicking off their sustainability efforts with an initial deployment of 6 electric vans in the Kuala Lumpur and Selangor regions. By 2023, this number will be increased to 61 EVs deployed nationwide. The deployment of these vehicles will undoubtedly go a long way in their efforts to become more sustainable and reduce their carbon footprint in Malaysia. DHL Malaysia is targeting to have 60% of its fleet be EVs by 2050 with a shorter-term goal of 30% of its fleet by 2024.

The EV being deployed by DHL is the CAM EC35. This van has about 4.8m3 of cargo space with a payload of more than 1 ton. The CAM EC35 is rated for a running distance of about 266km on a single charge of its 38.7kWh battery. According to DHL, the company has optimized its delivery routes to ensure that the vans will be able to complete deliveries efficiently within a single charge. Of course, the EV35 can be charged overnight (8 hours) for a complete charge and, if needed, can be fully charged with a DC fast charger in 2.5 hours.

When asked about the impacts of fast charging on the battery itself, representatives from CAM confirm that fast charging will have minimal impact on the battery itself. They also emphasized the 5-year warranty for the vehicle and reiterated the durability of the CAM EV35.

The deployment of the CAM35 EVs into their Malaysian fleet is the latest effort by DHL in their efforts to become a sustainable company by 2050. However, its a big step in their efforts to greenify their operations by 2030 and reduce their carbon footprint from 33MT to 29MT in the same timeframe.

This isn’t the first step that DHL has implemented to go green. In fact, if their international track record is anything to go by, we can expect to see them adopt more technologies in the near future to become more sustainable. In Malaysia alone, the company has accelerated their sustainability journey with warehouse solutions and logistics technologies powered by AI and cloud computing with partners like AWS which allow them to minimise energy consumption and maximise efficiency.
