The Predator CG437K S Launches in Malaysia – Gaming gets Bigger

When gaming consoles start pushing the boundaries of gaming with 120hz refresh rate at 4K resolutions, TVs have to get better. The latest-generation TVs made with gaming in mind have to keep up with the demands and now we see TVs with 120hz refresh rate. The thing is 4K 120hz is not a new thing in the world of high-end gaming. It is the standard in high-end PC gaming.

4K monitors are hardly popular, but they do exist. There is a good reason for that. PC monitors are usually optimised for a rather restrictive seating position. You are usually no more than 2 metres from your display. That means display sizes cannot exceed a certain size. With most gaming monitors from 24-inch to 38-inch, you do not get anything beyond Quad HD in resolution, because the differences with 4K is hardly noticeable or worth the fuss over.

  • Predator CG437K S 2
  • Predator CG437K S 3
  • Predator CG437K S 4

At the same time, if you do have the gear to push gaming at 4K 144hz though, you would want something that can keep up. For that you get this one, a 42.5-inch behemoth of a gaming monitor that outputs at 4K resolution and at 144hz at its maximum. It is basically the dream of every hardcore gamer out there today,

You are paying quite a premium for it, at MYR 4,699. 4K 144hz is just a starting headline number for you. Delve deeper into the monitor and it really sings, or rather, displays wonders.

You get two HDMI 2.1 ports, for you to plug in two PCs, two next-generation consoles, or a combination of both. Both HDMI 2.1 allows you to take advantage of 4K 144hz or 120hz standards. Of course, your cable needs to be able to handle that much data going through it too, so you might want to consider splurging on a good set of cable.

The monitor also acts as a KVM USB hub with USB 2.0 and 3.0 ports, whis is rahter useful if you have multiple PCs set up with the 42.5-inch behemoth of a monitor. There is also a USB Type-C port that supports PD charging at 30W, which allows you to fast charge your smartphone.

Predator CG437K S 2

On the business end, it has a display that pushes up to 1,000 nits of goodness into your eyes. The 1,000 nits’ brightness also gives it a DisplayHDR 1000 certification which also means that HDR images and videos should look rather good on the display. Additionally, colours should really pop as well with 90% DCI-P3 colour gamut coverage. At the same time, it is colour precise with Delta E<2.

Out the back, other than the ports, there is a mood RGB strip that you can synced with your music and other medias. There is also Acer ColorSense and LightSense technologies that allows the display to automatically adjust the colour temperature and brightness of the displayu according to the situation to protect your eyes. With ProxiSense, there is a proximity sensor that also detects the user’s presence in front of the display and dims the display to save power and to protect sensitive content from being displayed on the large format display.

Price and Availability

The Predator CG437KS is now available from Acer’s eStore and its online retail partners on Shopee and Lazada. You can get them from any of Acer’s authorised resellers too. As mentioned, it will set you back MYR 4,699. You can only get it in one colour option, black, as usual.

Predator Launches the X38 S Ultrawide monitor – The Ultimate Desktop Set-up

We have always maintained that a gaming monitor is the final piece of the puzzle when you put together a gaming set-up. A good portion of your budget, when building your rig, should always go to a good gaming monitor. A good gaming monitor can make or break your gaming experience, it is that important.

For gaming, you want something immersive, and fast. You want something that looks good as well in that sense. If you have something that does colours well, you might be able to rely on it for content work too, if you are into that kind of stuff. But finding a good balance in those areas are quite difficult. Not with the Predator X38 S.

The Predator X38 S

  • Predator X38 S 2022 Launch 3
  • Predator X38 S 2022 Launch

Predator’s latest high-end gaming monitor followed a rather similar strategy as before. Pack the best of everything in an ultrawide form factor. For that, you get a rather vivid IPS panel that is curved to 2300R.

That IPS panel boasts UWQHD+ (3,840 by 1,600 pixels) resolution, just slightly more the regular ultra-wide QHD panels. It is also a higher resolution than before, this 37.5-inch curved panel. Still, IPS panels boasts up to 178o in viewing angles, so you would not be getting any sort of distortion anywhere you turn to anyway.

Predator has tuned the display to be as colour accurate as possible. It covers up to 98% of DCI-P3 colour gamut. It even has a Delta E<2 as well for colours so accurate you might have mistaken the images on your screen as the real thing. At DisplayHDR 600 and a maximum of 600 nits in brightness, images really come to live.

Of course, a gaming display must be a fast one. The NVIDIDA G-SYNC ULTIMATE display can be overclocked up to 175Hz refresh rate to not only ensure that images are tear free, but also silky smooth. It boasts a G-to-G response rate as low as 0.3 ms for almost instant responses between mouse clicks and action. There is even the NVIDIA G-SYNC Esports Mode that is designed to lower latency and improves details in dark scenes.

Of course, Acer’s most premium technologies to protect the eyes of its users are packed in with the Predator X38 S. LightSense and ColourSense automatically adjusts the screen’s brightness and colour temperature depending on the conditions around the display.

The Acer Nitro XZ342CUP

  • Nitro XZ342CUP 2022 1
  • Nitro XZ342CUP 2022 2

If you feel like the Predator X38 S is a little too premium for your tastes, you can strain a little and go for Acer’s Nitro XZ342CUP 34-inch display. It features a QHD resolution at a regular 16:9 aspect ratio, which is still rather respectable. It is still quite a fast display at 144Hz refresh rate and 1ms VRB response time.

To ensure you get a tear-free gaming experience, the 34-incher offers AMD’s FreeSync technology. At the same time, Acer’s Flicker-less technology should keep images crisp and flicker free in any sort of conditions. There is also the Acer BluelightShield and ComfyView technologies to keep your eyes healthy.

Price and Availability

The Predator X38 S is now available for MYR 5,999. You can get your hands on one from Acer’s eStore, authorized retail partners nationwide, or official online stores on Shopee and Lazada. There are no colour options here, but at least the X38 S looks good in black.

The Nitro XZ342CUP is also now available in Malaysia. It will set you back MYR 1,799. You can find it in Acer’s eStore as well as official online stores on Shopee and Lazada. If you still prefer a physical buying experience, you can visit Acer’s authorized retailers nationwide for that. Again, there are no colour options here, just a regular black display with red coloured support pillar.

The Predator Gaming Projector is Real! The GD711 is a 4K LED Projector Made for Gaming at up to 240hz!

When you want to buy a display for your gaming rig, you first look at the gaming monitors. Gaming monitors are so common these days that you can spend anywhere between a few hundred Ringgit to a few thousands and get yourself a ‘gaming monitor’ of some sorts. Of course, if you want a good one, you are going to have to splurge a little bit.

There is a small problem though. The current biggest gaming monitor you can find on the market is no larger than 43-inches. If you want to go bigger, you are going to have to buy a TV, a 4K TV set that is not really made for PC gaming. Most of the time, these TVs are made for console gaming, which usually only tops out at 120hz refresh rate.

What if you want to go bigger than regular TVs, since the largest TV in the current commercial market tops out at 86 inches? You buy a projector that can go up to 110 inches with little issues. There are even projectors that can do much bigger than 110-inch, but those are industrial type projectors. There is still another problem here. Projectors are never targeted for gaming.

GD711 3
Source: Acer

Not this one though, the Predator GD711 4K gaming projector. Yes, it tops out at 4K in resolution. At that, you do not get more than 60hz of refresh rate. Understandably, it does not have HMDI 2.1 to work with. But with gaming, refresh rate and frames per second (fps) is sometimes more important than resolution. That is why the Predator GD711 is made to refresh at 240hz in Full HD resolution.

The best thing about having a projector is that you can get a large projection almost anywhere in your home. When you have friends over, you can get the screen to go as big as 300 inches. Imagine watching a good movie at 4K with that kind of size with your friends. You can even plug your consoles in and play multiplayer games at that with no fuss with that kind of real-estate. Acer recommends a throw range of 2.7m to get a 100-inch screen though.

Projecting all the goodness from your PC or Consoles is an LED that is rated to last up to 30,000 hours with minimal drop in luminance. It is rated at 4,000 LED lumens, which is sort of equivalent to about 1250 ANSI lumens. We would say that at that brightness, you might want to think of using the projector in a slightly dimmed room.

Unlike traditional lamp though, LED projectors do boast much better colour reproduction. The Predator GD711 offers 125% of Rec.709 colour gamut coverage. You get sharp, vivid, and highly accurate colours with highly accurate details still. Even the blacks are going to be as black as your screen can be. On top of that, while you can hook it up to your sounds system, you can also rely on the 10W speakers of the GD711 if you plan on bringing it to your friend’s house or set it up in any other rooms in your house. You can even hook it up to a Bluetooth speaker if you want.

The Predator GD711 4K gaming projector is now available at Acer’s very own online store and their official stores on Shopee and Lazada. You can also get your hands on one from Acer’s partner retailers nationwide. There are no colour options, like any other Predator products it comes in matte black. It also comes with a remote control, for you to also control its Aptoide OS built into the projector. The Predator GD711 retails at MYR 4,999, which is quite a lot of money for a projector. For a 4K projector though, and one that can refresh at up to 240hz, the price now looks more like a bargain. More information on the Predator GD711 can be found on their website.

Wear OS Gets A Premium Addition with the Montblanc Summit 3 Smartwatch

Android Wear’s successor, Wear OS, has been having somewhat of an uphill battle since its launch. Not many of the older Wear OS devices were getting the big Wear OS 3.0 update. In fact, to-date, the only notable smartwatch running Wear OS 3 is Samsung’s Galaxy Watch 4 series. That changes with the new Montblanc Summit 3 smartwatch.

Source: Montblanc

Montblanc’s Summit 3 is being pushed as a premium smartwatch with a premium price and also premium build materials. Staying true to the Montblanc image, the smartwatch isn’t coming with a flashy, glammed up design. Instead, Montblanc has opted to stay with a classic watch design complete with a physical crown and two pushers which act as buttons to interact with the Wear OS 3. It’s overall facade is sleek and minimal. The face of the smartwatch is a 1.28-inch, circular AMOLED display with a 416×416 resolution. The screen is protected by a layer of Sapphire Glass. The watch itself is encased in a titanium case with a stainless steel bezel. The Summit 3 comes with a hand polished finish to complete the premium 42mm smartwatch. It comes with a pin buckle strap which is available in black calf leather or rubber.

When it comes to sensors, the Montblanc Summit 3 is equipped with a heart rate sensor, a barometer, accelerometer, gyroscope and ambient light sensor. Like other Wear OS 3 devices, the Summit 3 is able to track pulse rate, blood oxygenation, steps taken and even sleep. Considering it does come with a blue rubber strap, it looks like you might even be able to track calories and workouts on the smartwatch. NFC is also built-in to the smartwatch. You’ll be able to use GooglePay and other compatible services where they are available.

The Montblanc Summit 3 runs on Qualcomm’s Snapdragon Wear 4100+ processor with 1GB of RAM and 8GB of storage. It is capable of Bluetooth 5.0 and WiFi connectivity as well. The smartwatch also comes with Google Play Store where users are able to download apps. You will need to connect it via the Montblanc Summit app.

Pricing and Availability

The Montblanc Summit 3 is available for pre-orders worldwide at the Montblanc website. It is available in three colours at launch – Black Titanium, Grey Titanium and Bicolour Titanium. It will be retailing for USD1,290 internationally. Locally, in Malaysia, it costs MYR5,700.

ViewSonic Launches New Projectors and Smart Interactive Display for the Boardroom and the Classroom

ViewSonic has just opened their new showroom in Malaysia. That is besides the point though. They are also one of the most known display manufacturers in the world at this point. Considering that they come from the humble beginnings from making budget computer displays, it is a huge feat.

They have come a long way from just making PC monitors though. They now also make several display related items and solutions that can be deployed in different situations. They also make projectors, if you have not known yet. They just launched a new one, alongside a smart display that is compelling for meeting rooms and even classrooms.

ViewSonic LS500WHE and LS550WHE

Product photos
Source: ViewSonic

Toe be fair, while there are two names you see here, they are really one product made for two slightly different use cases. The LS550WHE is more like a short throw version of the LS500WHE. Both are also LED Laser projectors.

The current LED projector technology only allows it to hit 3,000 ANSI Lumens in brightness. Comparatively, ViewSonic even sells a lamp-based projector at 3,800 ANSI Lumens. On paper, the lamp-based projector should be a better choice based on the projection brightness alone. But there is more to it than that.

The new LED projectors offer 125% in Rec.709 colour space coverage. That also means that the new projectors should be displaying images with vivid colours like no lamp projectors can display. In that case as well, the lower brightness count might not even matter with more vivid and better colours than ever before.

At the same time, because LED has a much longer shelf life at 30,000-hour cycles, replacing the lamp becomes a thing of the past. LED is also a lot more power efficient than lamp, which also means that your electricity consumption is nearly halved saving you more in terms of maintenance and usage. Of course, there is the fact that LED’s clarity drop off is much less drastic than traditional lamp.

ViewSonic ViewBoard Smart Display

Then there is the ViewBoard, a large slab of touch screen display that is a real clever solution for classrooms and boardroom. To be fair, the ViewBoard is designed mostly for the education sector. It is a powerful tool even in the boardroom though.

What makes it powerful is not really its size or touch screen features. You can get a touch screen display from any manufacturer technically and will get pretty much similar experience. What makes it special is the software solution that is built for the ViewBoard.

They call it myViewBoard and it is web based, so it is compatible with all kinds of platforms including Windows, Android, iOS, and even Mac. It is really designed as a complete collaboration and learning tool. The platform allows you to turn the ViewBoard into a rather powerful smart display that can be shared with all the participants in the classroom and boardroom. From the board itself, you can control how an entire class or meeting flows.

Price and Availability

The LS500WHE LED projector is now available for MYR 3,599. The short throw variant of it, the LS550WHE is available for MYR 3,999. For the ViewBoard, you want to contact your local ViewSonic representative. More on ViewSonic’s new products can be found on their website.

Razer Announces the Ornata V3 Low-Profile Keyboard

When you think of gaming peripherals, there is always one name that will never escape your shortlist – Razer. To be fair, Razer is not just a peripheral brand anymore. It is a household name in all things gaming now. It is more of a gaming lifestyle brand more than anything.

If you want to game, you want a fast mechanical switch. For work, you want something that gives you good feedback but also comfortable enough to type for a long time. If you want a multipurpose keyboard, well, there is always some form of compromise. You do want something that is fast and at the same time comfortable enough to work with for a long time. That is what the Razer Ornata is made for.

The Razer Ornata is a little unique for a mechanical keyboard. For one, it is a mechanical keyboard, but it is also a membrane keyboard. They call the technology Mecha-membrane. It is clever mix of mechanical switches and membrane switches. While it does sound odd, it is quite a unique switch that combines the best of both worlds. The Ornata V2 was launched in 2017, which was five years ago. While keyboard standards hardly change, the Razer Ornata is due for an upgrade.

Why else are we talking about the Razer Ornata? There is a new one, the third version of the unique Mecha-membrane keyboard. It is smaller, lower profiled, and it is still a full-sized keyboard.

The Ornata V3’s switches have not changed much since the V2. It is still equipped with Mecha-membrane switches that combines the best of both mechanical and membrane switches. It gets the quick precision and tactile feel of mechanical switches, at the same time it also gets a cushioned feel for extended use.

The V3 is also equipped with ABS keycaps for durability. The ensure that the keycaps do not wear off too quickly, there is a UV coating to protect the letterings on the keycaps. At the same time, the Razer Ornata V3 comes with Razer’s proprietary Chroma RGB system with 10 lighting zones. It also features dedicated media keys with a magnetically detachable soft-touch wrist rest.

The Razer Ornata is now available via Razer’s online stores on Shopee and Lazada. You can also find it sold in all Razer’s authorized retailers. It will set you back MYR 329, which is a lot less than plenty of gaming keyboards and even custom keyboards you can find in the market. BenQ Introduces their 2022 Line-Up of Products with HDRi and Eye Care

Choosing the right display for your set-up is rather important. You do not want to be spending a lot of money on your tower and forget buying other peripherals. While you can cheap out a little on audio peripherals in most cases, you do not really want to cheap out on your display. Your display is technically the window to your PC, and it is the thing that meets your eye every time you turn on your PC.

The MOBIUZ EX2710U and EX3210U 4K Gaming Monitors with HDRi and Eye Care Technology

  • 01 ex2710u

If you want to get the best of the bets gaming displays, you want something with 4K resolution. At that, you also want a rather fast display. The new MOBIUZ EX series for 2022 are two 4K gaming monitors with up to 144Hz in refresh rate. The IPS panel used on the displays also boast up to 98% in DCI-P3 colour gamut coverage.

Both displays come with HDMI 2.1 support, you want that especially when you want to push 4K 144Hz to your display. As per the title, the MOBIOUS EX2710U and EX3210U also features BenQ’s patented HDRi technology for better colour reproduction and contrasts. At the same time, there is the Brightness Intelligence technology that adjusts the screen’s brightness according to ambient lighting conditions to protect your eyes, especially in low-light gaming conditions.

On top of all of that though the MOBIUZ EX monitors also feature 2.1 channel audio system they call the TreVolo Speaker system. This also means that you might not need to buy a secondary speaker at all to get decent audio. To really differentiate itself from other older models, it even comes in white colour. The only difference between the two models is their screen sizes at 27-inch and 32-inch respectively. Of course, price differs too.

You might already have a home office with a proper work-from-home corner. Since the pandemic hit early in 2020, most of us had to shift our work patterns and get used to working from home. We must have a proper work from home set-up going. But that was nearly two years ago now. You would have to grab whatever you can get your hands on and put together a working set-up. It is 2022 and you might be due for an upgrade.

In that case you need something that can ultimately protect your eyes in extended working condition. The BenQ GW2485TC and GW2785TC monitors do not boast 4K resolutions. They boast a rather humble Full HD 1080p resolution. Full HD 1080p is still more than enough to enjoy the likes of Netflix though.

What makes these monitors perfect for your work-from-home set-up though is BenQ’s clever Brightness Intelligence technology. The technology uses an ambient light sensor to adjust what you see on the monitor. It does not only detect the brightness level of your room or work area. It also detects the contrast levels of the images to be displayed on the display. The display will automatically and cleverly reduce or increase overall brightness and even optimise dark parts so that you can see enough details on it without compromising the brightness levels of the entire display.

The clever display also has a flicker-free technology that reduces or eliminates flicker across all brightness levels available to the display. Of course, to ensure that you can keep working on the displays in extended periods, the displays are made with lower than regular blue light emissions. The downside to that is the slight warm tinge you might find on the display.

Other features that should boost your productivity levels is the Daisy Chain feature that allows you to create a multi-screen set-up with just a single USB Type-C connection from your PC. Once you plug in the USB Type-C cable too, your thin-and-light notebook can also simultaneously be charged at 60W PD from the monitors. It is also designed with ease of use and flexibility in mind, so you can tilt the display into any orientation for your convenience. There is also a built-in mic paired with two 2W speakers on both the display models for you to work with in a video call environment.

Of course, as per their name, they come in different sizes. The GW2485TC comes with a 24-inch IPS panel with 75Hz refresh rate. The GW2785TC also comes in an IPS panel that measures in at 27-inch instead of a measly 24-inch. It also refreshes at 75Hz.

Price and Availability

The BenQ MOBIUZ EX2710U will be available a little later in the year. There is no official pricing for the 27-incher currently too. The BenQ MOBIUZ EX3210U is now available on BenQ’s official Shoppe or Lazada stores at MYR 4,868. The new BenQ GW2485TC is now available also on their official store on Shopee and Lazada at MYR 1,149. For another MYR 100, you can get your hands on the larger GW2785TC monitor at MYR 1,249 on both Shopee and Lazada. Samsung Announces Creator Focused ViewFinity S8 Monitor

Samsung seems to be on a roll with all their products this year. The company has only just announced some of the most compelling lifestyle products with the expansion of their BESPOKE line up and their new Smart TV offerings. However, it looks like the company isn’t done just yet. Samsung has announced a brand-new, high resolution display with certified colour accuracy aimed at creators.

ViewFinity S8 1

The new ViewFinity S8 brings 98% coverage of the DCI-P3 gamut with 5ms gray to gray response times. The display seems to want to take on Apple’s Pro XDR display with high resolution IPS panels. The panels come with 1000:1 contrast ratios and a UHD resolution of 3840×2160 pixels.

It will be available in two sizes: 32-inch and 27-inch. Unlike Samsung’s Odyssey G8 monitors, the ViewFinity monitors are flat panels. However, they are made for productivity – particularly if you need colour accuracy. The display is certified by PANTONE and can even support the new 110 colours introduced in PANTONE’s SkinTone Guide. It is also HDR capable; with the 32-inch supporting VESA’s HDR 600 standard while the 27-inch supports HDR 400.

ViewFinity S8 3

The ViewFinity S8 Monitors come with a matte display which is also UL certified to be Glare Free. The matte finish helps disperse glaring lights while preserving colour integrity and reducing eye strain. It also comes with Adaptive Picture which optimises settings to suit your content while preserving eye health and also Eye Saver mode which reduces blue light exposure significantly. The monitors are also flicker free to reduce eye strain.

When it comes to connectivity, the ViewFinity S8 comes with 1 DisplayPort, 1 HDMI port and 1 USB-C. Connecting via USB-C enables deeper colour accuracy and up to 10Gbps data transfers. It also comes with a USB Hub feature which allows you to connect USB interfaces to your computer via the monitor.

ViewFinity S8 Model 1

The monitors also come with an environmentally aware, ergonomic design. Samsung has developed and incorporated new materials made from ocean-bound plastics to help reduce marine waste. These plastics are not only used in the body of the monitor but also in some of the more crucial components of the monitor. They are also more power efficient than before with Samsung’s Eco Savings Plus technology which reduces pixel brightness in sections of the image with black pixels for up to 10% more power savings.

Pricing & Availability

The Samsung ViewFinity S8 will be available in 32-inch and 27-inch sizes. It is currently available in South Korea for KRW820,000 (MYR2,794.88/USD$634.94) and KRW720,000 (MYR2,454.51/USD$557.60) respectively.

The monitors will be available globally according to regions starting in June 2022.

Cisco Urges Customers to Upgrade to Avoid Vulnerability Exploit

Cybersecurity has come leaps and bounds since we first started exploring the internet. Technology and the knowledge surrounding it have also progressed significantly. With that, so too has our understanding of the need to secure and protect our connections.

Cisco has recently issued an advisory to customers to upgrade their routers. The advisory comes in light of a vulnerability which allows a remote attacker to execute arbitrary code in a series of routers. This would cause a Denial of Service condition which would prevent access to the internet and connected servers.

routers small business rv series routers jpg
Source: Cisco

The vulnerability affects relatively dated business routers – specifically, the Cisco Small Business RV110W, RV130, RV130W, and RV215W Routers. Malicious actors are able to access root privileges through the web management interface of the routers. While Cisco is aware of the exploit, it seems like the company has no plans to patch the vulnerability in these dated devices. Of course, the company has announced the end-of-life status in an advisory released back in 2019.

The only silver lining for those planning to continue using the aforementioned routers is that the vulnerability can only be exploited if the web management interface is enabled. This can be determined by checking the status within the settings of the router. That said, it is definitely advisable to update to a more current router for better coverage and connectivity if not anything else.

Sony Announces New Lenses for Their APS-C Mirrorless Cameras

Whenever you go about choosing a camera system to buy for yourself. You are always stuck in a dilemma of some sorts. You must choose between the full frame format or the APS-C cropped sensor format. Generally, cropped sensor cameras are way cheaper because the sensor is smaller (hence, cropped sensor), and therefore the materials required to cocoon the sensors are less. There are differences and compromises for both APS-C sensors and full frame sensors, obviously, but we are not going to get into that for today.

There is plenty of reason why you want to go for an APS-C sensor other than its cost. Because they tend to be smaller and more compact, they are more versatile in different conditions. Even their lenses can be made smaller and more compact because APS-C sensors technically capture less light than full frame sensors. Thanks to that, APS-C specific lenses are cheaper to make and purchase as well. Of course, if you are into film making, the APS-C sensor size is perfect for Super 35mm film format.

There is a problem, however. Because everyone is so focused on bringing in more lenses for the full frame format option, the APS-C cameras get a little less attention. Sure, you can technically use full frame lenses with APS-C cameras, but they tend to get a little expensive. Sony has not forgotten that they offer a variety of APS-C mirrorless cameras too, thankfully. They have just announced three APS-C lenses that videographers and landscape photographers can enjoy.

Yes, it is a G Lens. How do you tell? There is a ‘G’ behind the name, obviously.

It is a very short lens though at 10mm-20mm. For photographers, this is quite perfect for wide-angle photography. It allows you to capture more in an environment than regular lenses, perfect for landscape photography. Sure, you can capture portraits too, you do have to move rather close to the subject though. That said, a good selfie never hurts anyone.

At 35mm, the lens becomes a sort of 15-30mm lens, which is still rather short and wide. For video work, this is the perfect lens when space is a constraint, and you need to move rather close to your subjects. It is also a perfect vlogger camera in a lot of sense. The short focal distance allows you to use the camera at an arm’s length and you still get to capture the large canvas behind you.

It is also the lightest lens of its kind in its class. It weighs just 178 grams, 20% lighter than the SEL1018 lens it replaced. Thanks to internal zoom and focus mechanisms, there should not be any focus breathing while the camera changes its focus too.

The F4 offered by the 10-20mm zoom lens may not offer very deep ‘bokeh’ for your photos and videos. For that, you need a fast lens with large aperture. You need a 15mm F1.4 G lens.

Wide lenses are known to have some distortions on the outer edges of the images they capture. Sony’s know how in lens making though effectively compensates the distortion. At the same time, the three aspherical elements in their optics also allow the corners to be captured in detail reducing blurs and resolution loss at the corners.

Of course, F1.4 aperture allows photos to be taken with beautiful ‘bokeh’ in the background, especially in low-light photography or film making. With a focusing distance at just 170mm away from the subject, your ‘bokeh’ can really shine.

For video work, it is important that the focal length does not change even when the camera is focus hunting. Like the zoom lens, the internal focus mechanism allows the 15mm lens to focus hunt while eliminating focus breathing effects.

It is a heavier prime lens over the zoom 10-20mm. It weighs in at 219g, which is still technically not a lot of weight. It is still perfect for vlogging if you just want one focal length and be done with it. It is also wide enough for you to capture most of what you see in the background as well, so your vlogs get a little more flavour from the background.

If 15mm is not wide enough for you though, you can get your hands on an 11mm lens instead. It features all the same construction feature as the 15mm, which also means you get less focus breathing. The same aspherical elements also eliminate distortion and improve resolution in the corners of the photos taken with the 11mm lens.

At 35mm, you are shooting at 16.5mm focal length, which is still quite a perfect distance as a vlogging lens. At the same time, it is the perfect lens when space is an even bigger constraint in shoot locations. It is lighter than the 15mm as well at 181g, perfect for a quick ‘run-and-gun’ shoot condition.

While the aperture is not as large as the 15mm lens at F1.8, it is still quite a significant opening. The large opening allows the lens to capture plenty of light in low-light conditions and still produce beautiful looking ‘bokeh’. You can go even closer to your subject too at a minimal focus distance of 120mm.
