The king of photography camera has yet again launched a new camera based on the EOS R platform. Oh yes, another mirrorless interchangeable lens camera in the EOS R line-up. They call it the Canon EOS RP, with the P harking back to Canon’s P series product. The ‘P’ in Canon’s case refers to the French word ‘Populaire’, meaning popular. Why? We do not know yet.
The Canon brand has always been a very strong brand when it comes to imaging solutions. That comes with no accident too. They have been making some of the most reliable photography cameras and have the widest native selection of lenses to go with it. The recipe for a great camera brand is what Canon exactly has and it shows with then taking the top spot as the top camera manufacturer for five consecutive years.
The Canon EOS R was launched at the end of last year with the RF lenses and Canon says that it is the age of revolution. Indeed it was, it was Canon’s first attempt to go into the full-frame mirrorless camera market which has previously been dominated by Sony. Well there was no competition from any other maker anyway.
The EOS R is a little different from what others expect from a mirrorless camera though. It still retains the full sized grip and still looks quite big compared to its closest competitor. The RF lenses are also a new construction and opens up plenty of new avenues for newer sort of lenses.
Today though, the general expectation of a mirrorless camera is met with the Canon EOS RP. It is the definition of a compact mirrorless camera with a full-frame sensor shoehorned into the body. That way, everything might look a little crammed.
The Canon EOS RP packs everything that the Canon EOS R has save for the 26.2-Megapixel full-frame sensor. It is shorter than the EOS R bigger brother in standing height. other than that though, dimensions are near identical. Even the button placements are very similar actually.
Of course with the smaller body size the weight of the EOS R comes down as well to less than 500g. That is less weight than a full bottle of 500ml bottle. Of course the concern becomes the weight of the body versus the weight of the lens.

Speaking of lenses, the RF lenses that has remained only four lenses for the past few months are getting bigger. The family is growing with six more lenses; four zoom lenses and two prime lenses. Soon you would get to choose to obtain the RF15-35mm f/2.8 L IS USM, or the RF24-70mm f/2.8 L IS USM, or RF70-200mm f/2.8 L IS USM, or RF24-240mm f/4-6.3 IS USM, or RF85mm f/1.2 L USM, or RF85mm f/1.2 L USM DS. No prices have been stated yet and no confirmation on when they will be available just yet too. We are excited though that Canon is releasing the RF lenses so quickly.
The Canon EOS RP will be available in March 2019 onward. There are no colour options other than black (or we think it is black). If you plan to get one, the Canon EOS RP body will set you back MYR5,999. To get it with the kit RF24-105mm f/4 L IS USM bundle you need to spend MYR10,999.
