AMD has long been an underdog in the world of processors compared to Intel. However, in late 2016 and the better portion of 2017, AMD has Ryzen above the competition (pun completely intended!); giving Intel a lot to sweat about.
The new Ryzen line of processors takes advantage of the “Zen” microarchitecture which has proven to outclass the competition. This microarchitecture uses a 14nm FinFET process for manufacturing and is reportedly more energy efficient than the competition. Not only are the Zen microarchitecture processors energy efficient, they have also been proven to outperform the competition when it comes to benchmarks.
The 2017 Ryzen processors have proven to be a boon to AMD and also to consumers looking for an affordable alternative. AMD has also managed to address a lot of the issues that have been plaguing their line up with the new Ryzen line of processors.
That said, with the announcement of an impending refresh of the Ryzen processors at CES, AMD has decided that their processors are going to be that much more affordable. In an announcement made a few days ago, the company announced a price reduction of about 2-15% on their current generation of Ryzen and Ryzen Threadripper processors.
