Amazon removed from Play Store
The Amazon Appstore integrates with Google Play Store, which has been downloaded almost 50 to 100 million times. Now, the store has been removed from Play Store and being replace by a brand new Amazon Shopping app. This new app has the same function as the Amazon Appstore but it doesn’t include access to it.
Last September, Amazon made a sudden move by daringly updating their app with full access to its catalogue of apps and games. Google pout upon app developers that gives users the ability to access different app stores because it’s competing with the main app store; Play Store. However, Play Store Developer Distribution Agreement stated that Google forbids app developers whose primary purpose is to distribute other apps. But Amazon found a loophole and argued that its app had a different idea.
Certainly, Google didn’t approve of it. With the Play Store agreement applied for all developers and apps, Google replaced it with a phrase that bans all apps that acts like an app store in Play Store. Their main aim is to close down the loophole found by the Amazon app. But Google gave Amazon two choices; update its app and remove the Appstore Access, or, remove the old app and add a new one that doesn’t trespass on the Play Store distribution agreement.
Amazon said that, “We launched a new Amazon App for Android Phones on September 9 that provides an award-winning mobile shopping experience that enables customers to discover and purchase all of Amazon’s digital catalogue, and provides customer access to the Prime Instant Video player and unlimited streaming of over 40,000 movies and TV episodes. Google subsequently changed their Developer Distribution Agreement on September 25. As a result, we removed the app from Google Play and published the Amazon Shopping app. Customers who want the best Amazon experience on their Android phone, including access to Prime Instant Video and Amazon’s entire digital catalogue, can still get the Amazon App for Android Phones at amazon.com/androidapp”
Users can still browse the Appstore from the Amazon app, and keep the old app. Amazon app is still on Play Store until it will be removed. Some users like to collect apps from Play Store before it’s completely removed. But than, users can directly download it on Amazon.
The “rights” that Google has on its platform became a large discussion. Some sees it as an anti-competitive app store, and other focal point shouldn’t be implemented to host a competing app store on its own platform. But than again, Play Store sells music, movies, and books, and doesn’t ban active services apps like Netflix or Spotify.
Let us know what do you think about this? Are you a Google Play Store fan or an Amazon Appstore fan?
