For those who aren’t quite sure what ALS is, it is known as Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), often referred to as “Lou Gehrig’s Disease”. It is a progressive neurodegenerative disease that affects nerve cells in the brain and the spinal cord. Motor neurons reach from the brain to the spinal cord and from the spinal cord to the muscles throughout the body. The progressive degeneration of the motor neurons in ALS eventually leads to their death. When the motor neurons die, the ability of the brain to initiate and control muscle movement is lost. With voluntary muscle action progressively affected, patients in the later stages of the disease may become totally paralyzed.
The ALS Ice Bucket Challenge was created to bring awareness to the disease as well as encourage donations for research and to help those affected by it. Many big names such as Bill Gates, Apple’s Tim Cook and even former President of the United States George W. Bush have taken part in this challenge.
It’s no surprise that the tech companies want to get in on the fun and help those in need too. Samsung recently published a video of the Galaxy S5 taking the Ice Bucket Challenge. Not only did this go viral but the video very smartly promoted how the device is waterproof!
