Alcatel, one of the initial brand leaders in the mobile space way back when is looking to make a resurgence. Under the new leadership of TCL Communication, a Hong Kong based company, the brand, now going by Alcatel Onetouch, is making a big splash in emerging markets. TCL-Alcatel touts itself as the number 8 global mobile device manufacturer in the world currently. The company is fast becoming the fastest growing brand when it comes to smartphone shipments and market share. They have managed to become the second fastest growing brand this year. They have attributed this massive growth to their success in major markets such as the Americas, Europe, the Middle East and Africa.
Alcatel Onetouch entered the Malaysian market not too long ago with the launch of their Pop and Hero devices, bringing a much needed affordability to the mobile space. This year is no different. Alcatel announced a new device at their event yesterday – the Alcatel Onetouch Flash. The Alcatel Onetouch Flash is a budget friendly device geared towards the younger market with one of the biggest fads of this year – the selfie. Banking on the young vibrant spirit of the younger market, the Alcatel Onetouch Flash was launched with a flash mob.
The Flash is a very capable device equipped with a Quad core Media Tek 6592M processor clocked at 1.4 GHz with 1GB of RAM and 8GB of onboard storage which is expandable by up to 32GB with a microSD card slot. Of the 8GB of memory, 5.1GB will be user accessible. The Alcatel Onetouch Flash comes with a 5.5-inch 720p HD IPS display with a resolution of 720×1280 pixels resolution. The display comes with MediaTek’s MiraVision technology which brings digital television grade pictures to mobile with a combination of hardware and software optimisations. The capacitive touch screen supports up to 5 points of touch. The Alcatel Onetouch Flash also comes with a light and proximity sensor allowing the device to adapt to light intensity and also be interacting with things like a flip cover.
The highlight of the Alcatel Onetouch Flash is its cameras. The device is coming with a 13-MegaPixel camera with autofocus and image stabilization. The main camera also comes with an LED flash and is capable of 4x digital zoom. It also comes with a 5-MegaPixel front facing camera or as they put it “selfie camera” which comes with fixed focus. Both cameras are able to record 1080p Full HD video at 30 frames per second. The camera also comes with a feature called “Smart Beauty Enhancement” which automatically touches up the picture taken.
The device will come with dual band GSM connectivity for 900MHz and 1800MHz bands as well as UTMS connectivity for 900MHz and 2100MHz bands with HSPA+ data connectivity. One of the biggest highlights of the Alcatel Onetouch Flash is the Hotknot feature which comes courtesy of the MediaTek chipset. Hotknot is MediaTek’s answer to near field communications (NFC). It utilises a touch sensor chip in tandem with the proximity and gravitational sensors to detect device proximity and enable data transfer.
The Alcatel Onetouch Flash comes with Dual SIM support meaning that users can use two SIM cards in the device if they so choose. The device also comes with a whole load of software features including a flip to mute function as well as a guest mode. All of these features come in a 152.1 x 76.2×8.1 mm package powered by a monster 3200 mAh battery. The Alcatel Onetouch will go on sale in Malaysia on the 12th of December in the Peninsula and on 15th December in Sabah and Sarawak for a very affordable MYR 699 (USD$ 201). The device will be available in two colours: Crystal White and Guna Grey.
In addition to the affordable price tag, TCL is also throwing in a flip cover with every purchase of the Alcatel Onetouch Flash as well as a selfie stick for the first 1000 customers who purchase it. The icing on the cake for the Alcatel Onetouch Flash is the Screen Warranty Care which entitles the purchaser to a single replacement of their damaged screen within a year of their purchase.
