Sony has released the FE 100mm F2.8 Macro GM OSS (SEL100M28GM), marking a pivotal expansion of its flagship G Master™ series. This new E-mount lens stands as the first medium telephoto macro in the lineup, fusing G Master’s celebrated optical excellence with class-leading magnification and advanced stabilisation. The lens is an instrument of surgical precision designed to elevate close-up photography to an art form.
The lens opens up a micro-world of detail, achieving a level of clarity that transforms the ordinary into the extraordinary. The FE 100mm F2.8 Macro GM OSS achieves a maximum magnification of 1.4x, enabling creators to capture intricate details in vivid fidelity. For those chasing extreme perspectives, the lens is compatible with an optional teleconverter, which extends the capability up to a stunning 2.8x magnification.
The 100mm focal length, which positions the lens in the medium telephoto range, provides a crucial practical benefit: a comfortable working distance. This distance helps photographers avoid casting unwanted shadows or disturbing sensitive subjects, facilitating complex lighting setups and unobtrusive observation.
The optical structure is uncompromising, engineered for the simultaneous delivery of exceptional resolution and signature soft background blur. The lens houses an advanced configuration that includes two XA (extreme aspherical) elements and two ED (Extra-low Dispersion) glass elements. For the minute adjustments critical to macro work, the lens offers tactile control through its dedicated features: a Full-time DMF switch allows instant manual focus override; a Focus Mode switch toggles AF/MF; and a unique Sliding Focus Ring enables a full MF mode linked to distance scales. Beyond focusing, an integrated optical image stabilisation system is specifically designed to accurately compensate for the various shakes magnified in macro work, ensuring steady handheld shots.
