CGTN: China pledges practical support for developing countries at global financing summit

BEIJING, June 25, 2023 /PRNewswire/ — China would continue to take practical steps to support its fellow developing countries, Chinese Premier Li Qiang said on Friday at the closing ceremony of the Summit for a New Global Financing Pact in Paris.

The summit, proposed by French President Emmanuel Macron at the G20 Summit in Bali last November, aimed to explore the current status and prospects of climate action and international financial system reform.

The closing ceremony attracted over 60 heads of state, government and international organizations, including Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva, South African President Cyril Ramaphosa and Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif.

Climate change action

Leaders attending the summit called for joint efforts to combat climate change, protect biodiversity, address the debt problems of developing countries and promote sustainable development around the world.

Wealthy nations have finalized an overdue $100 billion climate finance pledge to developing countries and created a fund for biodiversity and the protection of forests, Macron said on Friday.

China is actively promoting a green and low-carbon energy transition while participating in a responsible manner in promoting the global energy transition and addressing climate change, Li said on Thursday when delivering remarks on energy transition.

China is willing to work with other countries and adhere to the principles of mutual benefit and win-win cooperation, with technological innovation as the core driver, to promote the establishment of global clean energy partnerships to build a clean and beautiful world together, he added.

Financial system reform

In his closing speech, Macron said there was a consensus to reform global financial bodies like the World Bank and International Monetary Fund and make them “more efficient, fairer and better suited to the world of today.”

UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres warned that the current global financial system exacerbates inequalities, denying the poorest countries the credit and debt support they need and deserve.

“Nearly 80 years later, the global financial architecture is outdated, dysfunctional, and unjust. It is no longer capable of meeting the needs of the 21st century world: a multipolar world characterized by deeply integrated economies and financial markets, but also marked by geopolitical tensions and growing systemic risks.”

Li also called on the financial bodies to complete a new round of reform on quotas and voting rights, and increase the voice of emerging markets and developing countries.

China, together with the international community, pushes for trade and investment liberalization and facilitation, and opposes protectionism, decoupling and disrupting supply chains in any form, Li added.

The Chinese premier chose Europe as his first overseas trip since taking office and told Macron that China and Europe have their own strengths and need to further strengthen cooperation.

China and Europe should cope with the uncertainty of the international situation with the stability of ChinaEurope relations, and jointly promote the sustainable development of mankind, he said at the summit.

Huawei MatePad SE 10.4 In Depth Review – A Valuable Mate

Huawei’s MatePad SE is an affordable, everyday use table that has surprising bang-for-buck, even a year on after its release. With marketing focused on its 10.4-inch display and a “family theatre in your palm”, we found more reasons for it to be…your Mate of choice!

Matepad Cafe 102901~2

Design

Sporting a matte black finish with clean aesthetics, the Huawei MatePad SE 10.4 has a metal chassis surrounded with a brushed metal coating. While it is a magnet for fingerprints, the device feels really comfortable to hold in hand, even for long periods. This is helped by the ergonomic design with rounded edges. For a 10-inch tablet, the build is rather compact, with minimal bezels surrounding its 83% screen-to-body ratio display. Even with its light weight of 450g, the build quality of this tablet feels surprisingly good and robust.

Performance

The MatePad SE 10.4 is powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 680 chipset with an Adreno 610 GPU. Surprising for Huawei to forgo their Kirin chipset but the inclusion of Snapdragon is a smart addition to the MatePad line. While being of an older generation, the Snapdragon 680 is a fairly powerful chipset with an emphasis on energy efficiency thanks to its 6nm process. This coupled with a 5100 mAh battery results in impressive battery life for a tablet of its price bracket. With regular day-to-day use of web surfing, watching videos and the occasional navigation, I found myself only needing to charge the tablet every two to three days.

Great performance from an older but power efficient Snapdragon 680

The powerful processor is also supplemented by 4GB of RAM and 128GB of storage. With this combination, general use of the tablet is very snappy and switching between apps is a breeze. The performance during multitasking is pretty decent too with some interesting productivity features. Using Huawei’s Multi-Window mode, I regularly opened several tabs in the Browser and the Email app in split screen while having the Notepad app float as a bubble to intermittently take notes. And never once did I experience an app crash, lag or stutter. In fact, large swathes of this review were written on the MatePad SE 10.4 itself!

Good multitasking and productivity with Multi-Window mode

Gaming

Gaming performance has its limitations, however. The display size is comfortable enough to access the on-screen controls while also being large enough for visual clarity. Mobile Legends handled well at medium settings with no stuttering or lag. I did notice some sluggishness and dropped frames in PUBG Mobile at Balanced settings, but it was intermittent enough to not be a bother. In both cases, after hours of gaming, there was no drop in performance and there was no significant overheating either, so that is a plus for gaming comfort and reliability. That being said, the battery life does drop rather quickly when gaming. So overall, the MatePad SE 10.4 is suitable for some light gaming.

Good but not great gaming performance

Display and Audio

Huawei’s postured the MatePad SE 10.4 as family-friendly entertainment tablet, with its centerpiece being its 10.4-inch IPS display. The display has an FHD+ resolution of 2000 x 1220 pixels, at 225 pixels per inch (ppi). It has passed both TÜV Rheinland Low Blue Light and Flicker Free certifications, making it easy on your eyes for long-term viewing. We spent hours on Netflix and YouTube (for display performance testing of course) and were impressed. The brightness and image fidelity were good, despite the non-flagship grade pixel density. Visibility was great in dark environments however, it suffers in direct sunlight or brightly lit environments. The color reproduction and contrast were not the greatest but did not put us off.

Matepad Cafe 2 102740~2

Furthermore, the audio quality on this device is a pleasant surprise. Thanks to its dual speaker system tuned with Histen 8.0 technology, the tablet emulates surround sound well enough for immersive viewing. The display also comes with specialized modes such as Eye Comfort to filter out blue light, eBook mode to replicate paper-like texture and my personal go-to, Dark Mode; making viewing on this a tablet very easy on the eye. Overall, the display performs really well for a tablet of this price range and brings a great viewing experience at home or indoors.

Camera

The camera is probably the weakest element of the Huawei MatePad SE 10.4. It sports a 5MP main rear shooter and a 2MP front shooter. Image quality is rather poor, with fuzzy edges and poor contrast being the biggest issues. When zoomed in, there is obvious increasing pixelation starting at 2.0x and becoming unbearable even at 5.0x for the main shooter. Images also suffer from overbrightness when taking snaps outdoors. Huawei seems to have prioritized economical options in this aspect and I can’t fault them for that, being one that doesn’t use tablets for photos anyway.

Software

User Experience

The MatePad SE 10.4 ships with HarmonyOS 3 out of the box, which should feel familiar to long time Huawei users. As a first-time user of HarmonyOS, I truly appreciate the “clean” and minimalistic aesthetic of this OS.

All non-Google affiliated apps can be downloaded through Huawei’s own AppGallery. The tablet comes preinstalled with Petal Search as its default search engine service and Petal Maps, analogous to Google’s own proprietary services. The apps themselves work well in their own right, with Petal Search offering both Voice typing and Image search functionality. The interfaces are also very intuitive for those familiar with their Google counterparts. All-in-all, there is very little lost from the lack of Google apps, with perhaps the most significant being the lack of Google Assistant.

LightHouse app

For those put off by the lack of a Google Play Store, fear not as the LightHouse app will satisfy those needs. This app provides a gateway to access Google Play Store apps via Huawei’s AppGallery. To do so, you simply need to install two apps from the AppGallery first; LightHouse and LightHouse Ex. Once done, you will be able to download your favorite Google apps directly from the AppGallery. We tested out Google Maps, GMail and YouTube and all apps installed fairly easily. When trying them out, they worked as you would expect on any other Android-based device.

The Verdict: A daily Mate for you and your wallet

The Huawei MatePad SE 10.4 shines in terms of multitasking performance, battery life and build quality. With its attractive price tag, it will serve well as a daily use tablet for the light to heavy user, with focus on web surfing and entertainment. It is also great as a family tablet with kid-friendly features. The MatePad SE 10.4 currently retails starting at RM799 for the 6GB RAM+64GB with WiFi variant and RM999 for the 4GB RAM+128GB storage with WiFi variant. All purchases from the Huawei Malaysia site now will come with a Flip Cover as a free gift.

Huawei-IUCN Tech4Nature Initiative Announced New Phase of Coral Reef Protection Project

Digital Technology Helps Mauritius to Become a Global Pioneer in the Field of Coral Reef Conservation, Research, and Education

FLACQ, Mauritius, June 24, 2023 /PRNewswire/ — Huawei Mauritius, International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), and EcoMode Society today announced a new phase of the Tech4Nature Mauritius project to study species’ reproductive success in a restored area of reef in Mauritius.

The new phase directly follows a key project milestone achieved in June in which the partners, supported by the local community, successfully transplanted 25,000 coral fragments cultivated in coral nurseries to a degraded area of the reef ecosystem in Pointe-aux-Feuilles, a 20-km2 site off the east coast of Mauritius. This project is one of the first its type in the Western Indian Ocean.

“I commend the achievement of the Tech4Nature initiative. Our objective is that by 2030, we can work together for a healthy ocean that supports nature and people,” said the Honorable Sudheer Maudhoo, Minister of Blue Economy, Marine Resources, Fisheries and Shipping for Mauritius. “With the support of the Tech4Nature initiative, Huawei, and its partners, we look forward to continued action to restore ocean and coastal biodiversity for future generations.”

To monitor the mobility of species at the coral reef restoration site and determine the factors that disturb reproductive success, a solution comprising cameras and GPS receivers, 4G, and cloud has been deployed. The second phase of the project will use AI-based data analysis to guide the conservation decisions, support the research of marine biologists, and educate the public on the importance of reef conservation and restoration.

“The project will help us to have more information to manage and regulate public use,” said Nadeem Nazurally, President of the EcoMode Society. “It will also bring biodiversity conservation closer to the general public, as videos and other dissemination materials are planned through the mobile app. In collaboration with IUCN and Huawei, the project allows us to make a qualitative leap by incorporating new technologies to the monitoring and conservation of species.”

The 243-km2 lagoon created by the 150-km reef system of fringing coral is home to a rich array of aquatic life, including 61 species of macroalgae, 110 species of corals, 132 species of fish, and many endemic species. However, the reef system faces many threats, including overfishing, pollution, and changing seawater composition due to the removal of mangroves and seagrass. Climate change has caused a rise in sea levels, more extreme storms, and increased sea temperatures. Restoration efforts for coral reefs can boost resilience against climate change by protecting coastal regions against erosion and mitigate rising sea levels.

As a Small Island Developing State (SIDS), Mauritius relies heavily on its coral reef resources, especially its fisheries and tourism industries – tourism accounts for about 8% of the island nation’s GDP and 10% of its employment. Coral aquaculture to repair degraded reef has gained traction in Mauritius, with microfragmentation serving as a relatively new technique where small coral fragments are mounted in off-site nurseries using concrete blocks, galvanized structures, and natural basaltic rocks to support coral growth.

Early monitoring at the restoration site has shown an increase in local biodiversity, and an additional 1,890 coral fragments are currently being propagated in the coral nursery to expand the restoration area. With the site’s designation as a Voluntary Marine Conservation Area (VMCA), the momentum for revitalizing biodiversity in the reef ecosystem using the power of technology and partnerships is accelerating.

“Collaboration between public institutions and the private sector is increasingly necessary to determine success in the face of complex environmental challenges,” said James Hardcastle, Head of Protected and Conserved Areas Team for IUCN. “We have the opportunity to take advantage of technological innovations and incorporate them into conservation measures for our ecosystems. This project exemplifies how cooperation and mainstreaming are the way forward to halt biodiversity loss.”

“This project is the first of its kind that we are investing in Mauritius, after dozens of successful experiences of developing solutions to protect different species and natural spaces in countries around the world using advanced technologies such as cloud, AI, and connectivity,” said Zheng Kui, CEO of Huawei Mauritius. “The role of the technology industry in meeting this challenge is key, but only through collaboration with strategic and committed partners can the objectives be achieved in a real way.”

It is hoped that this project can be replicated in other areas of Mauritius and balance the needs of tourism and conservation. And with up to 50% of the world’s coral reef already destroyed or degraded, the project’s success to date demonstrates the value of further large-scale global reef restoration supported by digital technology.

NEW REPORT FROM GENERATION REVEALS HOW EMPLOYERS MUST ADAPT HIRING PRACTICES TO ATTRACT ENTRY-LEVEL TECH TALENT

Despite rhetoric around skills-based hiring, 61% of employers added work or education screening requirements for entry-level hires over the past three years

Companies that removed degree or work requirements see a significant increase in number of applicants and comparable on-the-job performance

WASHINGTON, June 24, 2023 /PRNewswire/ — New data from Generation, the global employment non-profit, reveals that organizations must radically rethink hiring practices for entry-level tech talent – and lays out first steps to take.

A number of companies have already broken the mold and removed degree or work requirements over the past three years, and they are reaping the benefits.

Nearly 60% of organizations that eliminated these requirements saw an increase in the number of applicants, allowing them to hire more people more quickly, and tapping into new candidate pools that can fuel talent diversity. Better still, they saw little trade-off in terms of performance once candidates were in the job—with 84% of companies saying that people they hired without degree or education requirements performed the same or better than people hired using traditional methods.

These findings come from Launching a Tech Hiring Revolution, a study of thousands of employers, entry-level tech employees, and jobseekers, spanning eight countries: Brazil, Canada, France, Germany, India, Mexico, the UK, and the US. The research was supported by The Hg Foundation as well as Bank of America, Clayton, Dubilier & Rice, and MetLife Foundation.

Globally, 86% of surveyed employers say they are hiring for entry-level tech roles. Organizations across various sectors, including banking, manufacturing, and retail, all have tech needs, forcing them to compete for talent. And they are struggling, with 62% of employers saying that entry-level tech recruitment processes need to change.

True entry-level tech jobs have disappeared, with 94% of employers saying their hiring requirements for “entry-level” tech roles include prior work experience in a related field.

But despite the continued rhetoric around skills-based hiring, nearly two-thirds of employers globally (61%) added education or work requirements over the past three years for entry-level tech roles. And not just technical skills, as 40% increased behavioral skill requirements as well.

As those employers that defied that trend have shown, shifting hiring to focus on skills rather than degrees is a way to access new talent pools. Focusing on skills-based techniques was a key part of employer success for the group that removed requirements, with tech industry certifications playing an important role. However, while certifications served as a hiring process equalizer across ethnicities, gender bias persisted. Men without certifications received more job offers per interview than women with certifications.

Even though employers are strongly motivated to expand entry-level tech pipelines, those that are struggling to change cite tight budgets and a lack of executive support as tough obstacles. The report concludes there are four ingredients to unlocking the needed shift, including:

  • Expand applicant pools by removing work experience and degree requirements, and instead prioritizing certifications and other skills indicators.
  • During the hiring process, use technical assessments to ensure that applicants have the necessary skills for the job.
  • Throughout, pay attention to both behavioral and technical skills.
  • Rethink hiring teams to reduce tacit bias and increase talent diversity.

To continue to explore the possibilities of a skills-based approach, Generation will assemble a coalition of global employers that want to make the kinds of changes the research calls for and share results publicly to create durable solutions that can be applied across sectors and around the globe.

You can read the whole report here.

Mona Mourshed, founding global CEO of Generation said:

“The first rung of the tech job ladder is broken. Every day, at Generation, we sit at the intersection of thousands of employers and learners, and we see the friction in the hiring process that makes it hard for talented people, who come from backgrounds that have been historically overlooked, to get in the door. That’s why we undertook this research to help employers and society unclog that vital entry-level tech pipeline. The next step is to go deeper in exploring what works, and I’m excited to partner with a coalition of global employers that are committed to opening up opportunity in tech to more people.”

Martina Sanow, Trustee of The Hg Foundation, a grant-giving charity with a focus on removing barriers to education and skills in technology, and Partner at Hg said:

“Those from diverse backgrounds and who haven’t followed traditional pathways represent a huge pool of potential talent for the tech sector. This landmark research represents a step change in our understanding of the global entry-level talent market and where the challenges and opportunities lie. The next crucial step is to build on the report’s recommendations and to trial with employers innovative recruitment approaches that harness the abilities of under-served groups.”

Notes to Editors

Methodology

The findings in this report are drawn from a survey commissioned by Generation that was in the field from November 4, 2022, to January 9, 2023. The study included employed people (aged 18 and over), unemployed people (aged 18 and over), and hiring and technical managers at employers.

The survey drew 4,023 responses from employed and unemployed people, and 1,325 responses from employers, across Brazil, Canada, France, Germany, India, Mexico, the United Kingdom, and the United States.

AJ Foyt Racing selects IFS Ultimo EAM software for critical Parts Management, Lifing and Maintenance processes

IFS begins multi-year brand & technical partnership with AJ Foyt Racing

CHICAGO, June 22, 2023 /PRNewswire/ — IFS, the global cloud enterprise software company, has announced that legendary American racing team AJ Foyt Racing has selected IFS as their strategic technology partner for the 2023, 2024 and 2025 IndyCar Racing seasons with options for extension.

The multi-year partnership will see AJ Foyt Racing leverage IFS Ultimo for Parts Management, Parts Lifing and Maintenance. The solution also provides capabilities for work order management, multi-location inventory management and purchase control and management.

Since the acquisition of the solution in 2022, IFS Ultimo continued to invest and expand in all its markets including North America as well as new ones. The decision to implement IFS Ultimo’s Enterprise Asset Management (EAM) software came at a time when Foyt Racing was looking to digitalize their workshop with a solution for vital monitoring and management for asset efficiency, reliability and minimizing of risk.

Foyt Racing required specific functionality to enhance their central processes, having previously relied on a manual reporting lifing system. Using IFS Ultimo EAM, the race team will have an automated central input source, enabling real-time updates that monitor the chassis mileage and all the individual parts on the car at any given point in time.

In addition, to optimize asset performance, the EAM solution will enhance component-specific triggers for Foyt Racing’s lifing system, enabling preventive maintenance task management, generating work orders, and providing active push notifications for required maintenance to drive optimal racing performance.

Finally, the racing industry has not been spared from supply chain challenges. With full integration between lifing, maintenance, work orders, inventory and purchase order management, Foyt Racing will be able to ensure that parts needed for upcoming maintenance are ordered in timely fashion for availability at the right time and in the right place.

In addition to becoming a strategic technology partner, IFS will collaborate with AJ Foyt Racing for a brand activation. The partnership will see the IFS logo featured on the team’s No. 14 and No. 55 Indy cars in all races, testing and showcasing during the 2023, 2024 and 2025 NTT INDYCAR Series racing seasons.

IFS branding will also appear on the race suits of AJ Foyt Racing’s current drivers, Santino Ferrucci and Benjamin Pedersen

Commenting on the new partnership, Larry Foyt, president of A.J. Foyt Enterprises, said, “When evaluating our options, IFS Ultimo’s EAM solution stood out for its flexibility and out-of-the-box functionality.” He continued, “The racing business is highly competitive. And while there are many moving parts to every business, in the world of motorsport – it is imperative that we have the right technology to support performance and reliability. We are confident in the success of this partnership and are already discussing future opportunities with Artificial Intelligence with IFS and anticipate a new and efficient energy to take us to the victory lane.”

Oliver Pilgerstorfer, Chief Marketing Officer, IFS, said, “With such a pedigree and history of talent in the American racing circuit, we are thrilled to be a strategic technology partner of AJ Foyt Racing.” He continued, “A core value for IFS is delivering fast time to value. By increasing asset reliability and the efficiency of Foyt Racing’s fleet, we are helping the team deliver at their moment of service on race day.”

The New Acer Aspire Vero 14 Now Comes in Blue for Just MYR 2,599

To be fair, the title is a little misleading. It is true that the Vero variant of the Acer Aspire laptop now comes in a different colour scheme that we think looks much better than just plain grey with some yellow spots here and there. We sort of undersold it as just another Aspire Vero though. It is Acer’s latest Aspire Vero that also comes with modern hardware.

Inside the new Aspire Vero 14 is Intel’s latest 13th generation Core i7 (up to) processor that you can rely on to bring you to the new age of computing. Alongside the powerful CPU is also up to 16GB of RAM for you to work with a lot of Google Chrome tabs at the same time, and up to 512GB of SSD storage for quick access to all your apps and folders and offering almost instant boot times for your Windows 11.

You get a 14-inch Full HD IPS display on the Aspire Vero 14 of 2023, which is nothing much to shout about, but still, something you can appreciate. It is not the fastest or the most colour accurate display, but it does look good still for work or even entertainment purposes.

This being a Vero product, you can bet that its chassis is partly made of plastic. In fact, this Aspire Vero contains more plastic than before. The chassis now includes about 40% PCR (Post-Consumer Recycled) plastics whereas the older model only includes 30%. They claim that this reduces their CO2 emissions by up to 30% too in their production. They also claim there are no rigidity or structural penalties even when they introduced extra plastic materials to the chassis.

The new Aspire Vero also features something called OceanGlass™ for their trackpad. It is not really glass though, as the name suggests. Rather, it is a blend of different types of Ocean Bound Plastics (OBP) to mimic a smooth flat surface that we are used to on the trackpad. While The chassis offers a different colour to before, Acer claims that the chassis is paint free, and that the blue colour of the Aspire Vero 14 is the organic colour of the plastic blends.

To get even more out the Aspire Vero 14, Acer designed the chassis to use a standardised set of screws for serviceability and reparability purposes. It ensures that users can easily access the internals to not just upgrade the hardware, but also to repair and replace malfunctioning ones as much as possible so that the Aspire Vero 14 can last even longer. They even use packaging made of 100% recycled paper and up to 90% recycled cardboard. The packaging is also designed with extra purpose in mind as an ergonomic laptop stand.

To minimise electronic waste even further, Acer programs something they call the VeroSense. It is an integrated suite of management apps that helps user take control over the Aspire Vero’s power consumption and dissipation. The suite of apps optmises the Aspire Vero’s battery power consumption to ensure a long-lasting battery life and, in effect, extends its shelf life.

Price and Availability

The Acer Aspire Vero 14 laptop is now available from Acer’s authorized resellers, Acer eStore, and their official stores on Shopee and Lazada. The Aspire Vero 14 also comes with Microsoft Office 2021 Home and Student edition pre-installed. It will set you back MYR 2,599 but if you do purchase your Aspire Vero 14 before the 30th of September 2023, you can trade in your old devices for up to MYR 500 in cash rebate. The accepted devices include tablets, laptops, desktops, and AIOs even if they are not working. More on the Acer Aspire Vero 14 can be found on their website.
