CGTN:China makes new pledges to help developing countries defeat COVID-19

BEIJING, May 22, 2021China on Friday announced several new measures to help developing countries tackle the COVID-19 pandemic and its sweeping impacts, pledging to contribute $3 billion in the next three years and provide more vaccines.

Addressing the Global Health Summit via video link, Chinese President Xi Jinping urged the world’s leading economies to remedy deficiencies, close loopholes and strengthen weak links in fighting "the most serious pandemic in a century."

The summit was co-hosted by the European Commission and Italy, chair of the Group of 20 (G20) this year.

The number of confirmed COVID-19 cases worldwide has surpassed 165 million, with more than 3.4 million deaths, according to data from Johns Hopkins University.

‘Close the immunization gap’

"A year ago, I proposed that vaccines should be made a global public good," Xi said. "Today, the problem of uneven vaccination has become more acute."

More than 1.1 billion COVID-19 vaccine doses have been administered globally, but over 80 percent of those were administered in high and upper-middle income countries, with just 0.3 percent of inoculations taking place in low-income countries, Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, director general of the World Health Organization (WHO), said earlier this month.

China has supplied 300 million doses of vaccines to the world; it has provided free vaccines to more than 80 developing countries in urgent need and exported vaccines to 43 countries, Xi noted, adding that China will provide more vaccines to the best of its ability.

China supports its vaccine companies in transferring technologies to other developing countries and carrying out joint production with them, he said.

Reaffirming China’s support for waiving intellectual property rights on COVID-19 vaccines, he said the country "supports the World Trade Organization and other international institutions in making an early decision on this matter."

He raised a proposal for setting up an international forum on vaccine cooperation to promote fair and equitable distribution of vaccines around the world.

"We must uphold fairness and equity as we strive to close the immunization gap," Xi stressed. "It is imperative for us to reject vaccine nationalism and find solutions to issues concerning the production capacity and distribution of vaccines, in order to make vaccines more accessible and affordable in developing countries."

More financial support

China has already provided $2 billion to help with developing countries’ responses to COVID-19; it has sent medical supplies to more than 150 countries and 13 international organizations, providing more than 280 billion masks, 3.4 billion protective suits and four billion testing kits to the world, according to Xi.

"China will provide an additional $3 billion in international aid over the next three years to support COVID-19 response and economic and social recovery in other developing countries," he announced.

Xi, the leader of the world’s largest developing country, mentioned "developing countries" 11 times in a speech that lasted less than seven minutes, calling on G20 members to do more to help them and address their concerns.

"China is fully implementing the G20 Debt Service Suspension Initiative for Poorest Countries and has so far put off debt repayment exceeding $1.3 billion, the highest deferral amount among G20 members," he said.

It is essential that G20 members continue to support developing countries by such means as debt suspension and development aid, said the Chinese president.

Xi went further to call for improvement in the global governance system. G20 countries should strengthen and leverage the role of the United Nations and the WHO and improve the global disease prevention and control system, the Chinese president said.

"It is important that we uphold the spirit of extensive consultation, joint contribution and shared benefits, fully heed the views of developing countries, and better reflect their legitimate concerns," he added.

Xi repeated his call for solidarity and cooperation in fighting COVID-19 and building a global community of health for all.

"The pandemic is yet another reminder that we, humanity, rise and fall together with a shared future," he said. "We must champion the vision of building a global community of health for all, tide over this trying time through solidarity and cooperation, and firmly reject any attempt to politicize, label or stigmatize the virus."

CyberPurify makes the world’s first online content filtering in realtime

SAN JOSE, Calif., May 22, 2021 — CyberPurify, a startup specializing in using Machine Learning to identify harmful content, has just launched a free solution called CyberPurify Kids to help parents around the globe create a safe online environment for their kids in just a few clicks.

Binh Nguyen_CyberPurify
Binh Nguyen_CyberPurify

Demands for such content filtering for kids continue to rise as with the growth of 5G, smartphones and social networks, there are 4.66 billion Internet users in the world, on average, each person generates 1.7 GB of data per day, equivalent to 2,000 photos or 150 videos, and it will continue to increase in the future, leading to massive content needs to be moderated before it reaches large children.

Among them, harmful content is so pervasive that 11 is the average age that kids have come across pornography, some are as young as 7 or 8. More than 60% of 11 to 13-year-olds are unintentionally exposed to pornography online, most of which describe the feeling as "awful" and "confused", causing the most negative feelings, especially for children under 10.*

The period under 10 is when children interact and explore with the outside world, so they are easy to imitate and be influenced by negative factors. Harmful content such as accident images, gore, animal abuse, violence, and especially pornography can make children uncomfortable, confused, and obsessive in the future.

In terms of pornography alone, they are not only in the form of websites but also images/videos/advertisements appearing on online gaming sites, social networks, forums, group chats, etc.

That’s why CyberPurify comes into play. The product runs a deep learning model on the browser to identify and blur 15 types of harmful content, including pornographic, horrifying, drugs and alcohol, hate speech content.

Parents shouldn’t and don’t need to over-monitor what kids do online

"Invading children’s privacy by monitoring what they do, what they see will negatively affect their personalities and family relationship. In the past, parents faced a dilemma of letting their kids be harmed by cyber dangers, or seriously invading their private spaces with traditional nanny software," said Binh Nguyen, founder & CEO, also a dad with two children.

"We focus on building an AI model that enhances the identification and classification of harmful content, redefining the concept of child safety by using AI in real-time recognition even when the content is not displayed. It is as if you have given your child a loyal guardian who does not judge or scrutinize the private life, it will be a true companion to each child in the journey of discovering the Internet," he added.

Using the product is simple. Parents just install CyberPurify Kids in the store containing the browser extension/add-on. Every time their child accesses the Internet, CyberPurify will automatically analyze the displayed content, blur it if it is harmful, or send a report to parents when detecting that a child learns about drugs or substances. When the child tries to remove this filter, the parents will also be notified.

CyberPurify is like a child

"The special thing about CyberPurify Kids is that it is like a child, constantly learning more harmful content it discovers every day to become smarter, preventing content in the future. This is the world’s first product running on a browser that can recognize almost all kinds of harmful content that exist on the Internet," Mr. Binh added.

Along with running CyberPurify, Mr. Binh was the founder and CEO of Applancer TopDev invested by SaraminHR, a company listed on KOSDAQ in Korea.

"At the beginning of 2021, I left Applancer TopDev to focus all my time on developing CyberPurify Kids because the right time has come, most browsers support running AI and this is the perfect time for us to bring a strong identity on the server to the browser, serve more people," Mr. Binh said.

Mr. Binh is also widely known as a pioneer in the application of AI to identify pornography called KillPorn, which has been widely used in net rooms and homes since 2007. After achieving an award from the "Vietnamese Talent Award", he gave a license as a gift to VNPT so VNPT can provide the service to the Internet subscribers of this network operator under the name MegaKillPorn.

In the past, CyberPurify provided B2B services to digital content providers/ platforms as a human replacement tool for automatic content censorship for user-generated content. It is currently processing over 10 million images and video content per day, equivalent to 20,000 workers.

According to the representative, besides 15 types of content (pornography, horrifying, drugs/alcohol and hate speech), CyberPurify Kids also prevents malware, scamming sites and viruses.

CyberPurify is one of 5 winning startups at AI Accelerator Challenge 2021 (AAC 2021) powered by the Vietnam Ministry of Science & Technology and Australian’s Government.

CyberPurify Kids is provided for free to schools, labs, internet cafes or places with public computers. It is available as an extension/ add-on on browsers such as Google Chrome, Microsoft Edge, Firefox and Safari. Advanced features include sending statistical reports to parents for $9/ month, and $99/ year.

Through the video, viewers will get to know the character and life of all six owners of a coveted Michelin star (Hiša Franko, two Michelin star Restaurant,  Hiša Denk, Atelje Restaurant, Vila Podvin, Dam Restaurant and Gostilna pri Lojzetu, all one Michelin star Restaurants), and explore how their relationships with local producers help define and inspire their world class culinary creations. Chefs Ana Roš, Gregor Vračko, Jorg Zupan, Uroš Štefelin, Uroš Fakuč and Tomaž Kavčič are all presented in the video with the opportunity for viewers to share their vision, dedicated work, passion and love for food and the environment.

Xiaomi Launches Premium Mi TVs in Malaysia!

In 2014, a little-known upcoming brand from China took to Malaysia by storm. Xiaomi launched their flagship class Xiaomi Mi 3 at the time and started their sale campaign in Malaysia in a way familiar to Malaysians but has yet to become a norm. They sold their highly anticipated smartphone online and sold out in minutes.

The plucky little brand has grown from strength to strength in the years it has existed. It has grown from a little company that makes affordable premium smartphones to a company that builds an ecosystem of smart products for a modern home. They have grown from making tiny devices that you put in your pockets to making electric scooters even.

Last night sees another one of Xiaomi more premium products making it into the Malaysian home appliance market. It is a big one too. Xiaomi introduced the Mi TV P1 and Mi TV Q1 to Malaysians.

Mi TV P1

The Mi TV P1, while boasting up to 4K UHD in resolution, is listed under Xiaomi’s more accessible offering in high-resolution entertainment. Understandably then you get a Full HD 32-inch option for the Mi TV P1 series. All of them still come with Android TV as standard though.

Despite being the more accessible series in the Mi TV family, the 55-inch variant gets HDR10+ on top of its 4K UHD resolution for even better colour reproduction. The added dynamic range also adds a sense of realism on the picture itself. Dolby Vision on the 55-inch also helps with more immersion as you watch Dolby Vision certified movies from the likes of Netflix.

You only get 60Hz from the LED panel. With MEMC motion smoothing technology though you are like to get a tear-free, lag-free, and smooth picture experience. Thanks to Android TV as well, you not only get to enjoy services like Netflix, Prime Video, YouTube, Spotify, and Tidal. You get to work with Chromecast built directly into the TV. You get the benefit of Google Assistant too, with the embedded mic on the TV you might not even have to reach out to your remote control.

With 192 zones of full-array dynamic local dimming, colour bleeding and fringing is kept to a minimum, almost not existent with superb contrasts.

Of course, the 75-incher supports Dolby Vision and HDR10+, it is a Samsung QLED panel after all. On top of that though the QLED TV boasts up to 120Hz and HDMI 2.1 with Auto Low Latency Mode. Those also means that the Mi TV Q1 is ready for the next-generation gaming consoles. If you really want, plug in a gaming PC and watch your fps go crazy too.

Great pictures have to be coupled with great audio to really immerse in. The Xiaomi Mi TV Q1’s stereo speakers pack a lot of punch at 30W. [Google I/O 2021] Android 12 is a Big Visual Change for You

Android is currently the most popular mobile operating system (OS) in the world. At least 72% of the entire smartphone market in 2021 runs on Android. That is also mostly because there are so many Android offerings out in the market that fits almost all sorts of budget.

There is also another good reason why Android becomes the OS of choice for plenty of enthusiasts. The fact that no two Android devices looks and feels the same is one of them. You could put a Samsung Galaxy S21 Ultra beside another similar device with similar colour option but when you pick them up, they could feel completely different in terms of its interactions and layout. If you are its owner, you know which one of the smartphones is which the moment you pick it up. Of course, there is the fact that you cannot unlock the other smartphone.

#Android12: Designed for you

Android 12 is not the largest update in terms of added feature on the user interface (UI), technically. It is the largest though in terms of visuals. The concept for the 12th major iteration of Android, as Google puts it, centers around You.

They call the new design language Material You. That also means that the design language is not entirely different from before. It is technically an evolution of the older Material design language. Thing is, it is not like the old Material design felt dated in 2021. Its simplistic and minimalistic language still does well enough in 2021, and we think beyond.

Still, Android 12 is coming and here are the major changes we think you might like; at least we like the changes.

More Personalisation

Colours turn out to be everything in our lives, and that includes our smartphones. We all wanted dark mode at some point in the past two years. Admittedly, Dark Mode looks sick and made our smartphones look extra sleek. But it does get a little boring when everyone starts doing the same things.

Adding some colours is a way to go to make your device even more unique to you other than having different home screen layouts. That is what Android 12 is, colours for your life. The UI can cleverly extract dominant colours and determine complementing colours from your wallpaper and turn your whole theme around that chosen colour. That extends even to the new widgets Material You is introducing. Of course, you can change those colours as well in the settings, if you want to have a different colour scheme for your theme. You technically can decide how thick you want your on-screen volume control knob to be too.

Better, Faster, More Sensible Animations

Source: Google

The UI is designed to be more intuitive and allow certain things to come up front and center for you. For example, picking up the device can turn your screen on, but the fluid animations can flash up according to how you pick up your device. The display might come to life from the bottom of the device up, or vice versa. It responds to touch and gestures too, apparently.

The most visible change on Android 12 in terms of animations though is on your lock screen. On Any Android device, you can view your notifications via your lock screen. You can close the notifications from your lock screen too. Once you cleared out your notifications though, Android 12 brings out your clock front and center to let you know that you are all caught up and tell you the time, obviously.

With Material You as well, Google have supposedly improved animation load times and speed by up to 22%. The development team somehow found a way to cut back on CPU loads for animations which both sped up the animations and extend battery life in the process. On top of that, the cut back in CPU reliance also means that older and lower-end devices can benefit the full animations of Android 12.

Bigger Means Better

A part of system designs in Material design is making things more compact, cleaner, simpler, and more minimalistic. A lof of quick access spaces and buttons are made smaller, more rounded, and take up so little space you could cram a million of them on your large 6-inch display. They sort of rolled back on that for the sack of intuitiveness and better-looking spaces though.

In Material You the notification is a much cleaner space to look at. Gone re the clutter that you might see in the current iteration of Material design. The notification page is much easier on the eyes to navigate and work with as well with a slightly larger interaction space.

You see the biggest change in Quick Settings though. Instead of little round balls that you are used to, they are now bigger buttons to work with. This not only prevents clutter, but also wrong presses when you use your device one-handed. The have added Google Pay and Home Controls button too for you to quickly access your ewallet payment gateway and even quickly control your Home IoT devices just through a couple of taps.

Privacy Dashboard

Source: Google

Transparency over data collection and sharing has been one of the most important features we look for in our smartphones today. Apple’s iOS now allows you to track each app and what they do with your data. For Android, it is a little different.

Instead of implementing app specific algorithm to identify what data is being used by each app and how, Android 12 gives you a one stop shop to understand what apps are using what and when. The dashboard allows to check also the kinds of permissions you give each app. You even can revoke access of the apps too from one Privacy Dashboard.

At the same time, Android 12 tells you when an app is using your camera or microphone. In some ways, Android 12 can help you track which apps use the two items when it does not need to as well. You can either revoke camera or mic privileges from apps via Privacy Dashboard in that sense.

There is more to that, however. You can revoke the entire systems access to both microphone and camera. All you have to do is pull down the notification bar, and then pull down again to quick access and turn off camera, or microphone access, or both. In that case, even if you launch your camera app, you are not going to see anything.

Regarding location, sometimes apps do not need to know where you are precisely. In that case, Android 12 allows you to set “approximate location” sharing with some of the apps that you feel might not need your precise location. An example of that kind of app is the weather app, to tell you what the weather is like in your general area.

And More…

There are more subtle changes in Android 12. To be really honest, we have not had our hands-on with the Android 12 Beta just yet, because we do not own devices that supports Android 12 Beta at this time. We are hoping that the list might expand a little more soon though. If you want to get your hands on Android 12 Beta, you can check if your devices are supported at the Android 12 Beta page.
