Razer Barracuda X is Everything the Modern Gamer Needs

Wires are a pain to deal with. While the world of electronics has given us amazing things like the television, video games, smartphones, and even the computer, cable management has always been the bane of electronics. You need electronics to be tethered to a wall socket at least though, for power obviously.

The advancements that made the electrical battery the technology it is today though has led to the very rapid development that is wireless technology. Things like your smartphones and laptops, and even Nintendo Switch will not happen unless there is the magical block of stuff inside your devices that is called the battery. Wireless technology has also given us wireless headphones like the new Razer Barracuda X.

While wireless technology does have its limitations in terms of certain sound qualities, battery life, and even latency, most of them has been solved and improved tremendously over the years. All that culminates in the Barracuda X that can be used in any way you can imagine, without the hassle plugging cables in and dragging your devices across the room when you need to go take a leak.

The Barracuda X is truly a versatile piece of kit. You can connect it to your PlayStation console, your PC, your smartphone, and even a Nintendo Switch at the same time. Of course, the Nintendo Switch requires a special HyperSpeed Wireless dongle that comes in the Barracuda X’s packaging.

Of course, there are a slew of cables, including USB-Type C extensions and cables for charging. Because nothing beats a wired connection in terms of sound quality and fidelity, there is a 3.5mm AUX cable included in the set too. For gaming, you get a detachable Razer HyperClear Cardioid microphone. There is a good reason why it is a detachable mic.

The Razer Barracuda X is made with not just gaming in mind. It is made for gamers to use everywhere. You can tell, because it does not feature the regular outrageous or striking look of the regular gaming headset from Razer. Gone are the green, or white, or red, or yellow accents; you do not even have RGB on the Barracuda X. It looks and feels like the more subtle OPUS headphones. It does not have the Noise Cancelling technology, but it does share the same stealth design so that you can blend in when you use it outside of home.

Hardware wise, it packs Razer’s immensely powerful TriForce drivers which measures in at 40mm. That large driver should deliver rich, clear, and detailed audio that is mostly tuned for gaming. That does not mean you cannot enjoy music with it too though. Anything designed with gaming in mind should sound good in other conditions as well, especially when the headphone is capable of producing 7.1 surround sound. The high-power delivery also ensures immersive experience with a lot of volume. That should also alleviate the lack of noise cancellation technology.

At 250g, the wireless headphone is made with comfort in mind too. The lack of weight will allow you to be a lot more comfortable with the headphone in long gaming sessions and you are going to be gaming long and hard with the Barracuda X’s 20 hours of battery life. The memory foam ear cushion is designed so that it sits flush on the side of your heads and create a tight noise seal while remaining breathable. The overhead cushion is of course important in not just spreading the weight of the headphone properly, but to relief the pressure on top of your head.

The Razer Barracuda X is available now from Razer.com and authorised dealers across the nation. You can also get them from Razer’s Official Store on Shopee and Lazada. Unlike the Opus X, the Razer Barracuda X only comes in one colour option: black. At MYR 549 though, the headphone could be one of the best value for money gaming headsets from Razer. More information on the Razer Barracuda X can be found on from their website.

ST Telemedia Global Data Centres collaborates with ABB for artificial intelligence energy optimisation pilot

Pilot to be carried out in two phases over 12 months as STT GDC seeks to innovate to reach its sustainability goals

SINGAPORE, July 15, 2021ST Telemedia Global Data Centres (STT GDC), one of the fastest growing global data centre operators headquartered in Singapore, announced today that it is collaborating with ABB, a technology leader driving digital transformation across industries, to conduct an artificial intelligence (AI) energy optimisation pilot in Singapore. The objective of the pilot is to leverage AI and machine learning (ML) technology and advanced analytics to optimise energy use within a data centre and reduce a facility’s overall carbon footprint.

"STT GDC is excited to collaborate with ABB on this pilot as we transition our data centres to be net carbon-neutral by 2030," said Daniel Pointon, Group Chief Technology Officer, ST Telemedia Global Data Centres. "Our group’s AI roadmap will take a big leap forward with this pilot program and focus on optimising our data centre’s energy utilisation. During the review of the pilot results, we will also assess future AI-based applications such as predictive maintenance, capacity management, security analytics and other business processes in our considerations."

The pilot will span two phases – an initial data exploration, modelling and validation phase, followed by deployment of AI control logic in a live data centre environment. The pilot aims to achieve at least 10 percent reduction in energy usage by the cooling systems, which contributes most to the consumption of electrical power in a data centre after our customer’s IT equipment. Optimising the cooling efficiency will in turn improve power usage effectiveness (PUE) and reduce the carbon footprint, with an estimated reduction of 1,100 tons of carbon in the atmosphere for every 10MW of IT load utilised, which is equivalent to saving approximately 18,000 trees.

Going further than previous AI research work constrained to white-space of data centres, STT GDC’s pilot is taking a holistic approach and developing AI neural-network models for the entire DC cooling plant including the upstream chiller and distribution systems. The AI project is also unlocking new opportunities for efficiency improvement at a granular level within the data centre. With the ability to glean AI-generated insights, leveraging cutting-edge ABB Ability™ Genix for industrial analytics and AI, STT GDC can effectively track and analyse the wealth of data generated by monitoring systems in the data centre, and better facilitate dynamic cooling optimisation to reap the desired outcomes.

"We look forward to supporting the STT GDC team in their efforts to drive digitalisation and energy efficiencies," said Madhav Kalia, Global Head of Data Center Automation at ABB. "At ABB, we have a strong track record of supporting data centre operators with our best-in-class technology solutions. We are committed to exploring the synergies between our offerings with STT GDC as it embarks on an ambitious plan."

As one of the fastest growing operators, STT GDC is committed to pushing the boundaries in innovation and setting new benchmarks for the wider industry. The vast amount of data that can be captured and harnessed in a live data centre environment makes for a strong base for AI applications which can also be applied to other facets including capacity planning, risk mitigation and predictive maintenance. This, and other research and development initiatives around alternative energy, water efficiency, construction technology and IT, are being carried out by STT GDC’s research and development team based in Singapore.

"In view of growing data demands from end users and emerging business applications that require increasingly higher computing power, the resources that data centres consume have the potential to increase if not appropriately addressed. As a long-term participant in the data centre industry, players like STT GDC must take the lead, maintain operational excellence, and fully align with national and international climate change agendas such as the recently announced Singapore Green Plan 2030. We remain committed to our principles for long-term value creation and goal of contributing towards a more sustainable global economy," Pointon added.

This initiative by STT GDC comes in the wake of its pledge to achieve carbon-neutral data centre operations by 2030 with energy efficiency and the use of renewable energy being key to the Group’s sustainability ambitions. The AI project will be jointly developed by STT GDC and ABB. It will be an on-premise solution that will tightly integrate to the existing ABB Ability™ Data Center Automation system on site, which provides comprehensive monitoring and control of the entire data centre infrastructure.

Huawei announces Seeds for the Future Program 2.0, planning to invest US$150 million in talent development over the next five years

MANILA, Philippines, July 14, 2021 — Huawei on Thursday announced its Seeds for the Future Program 2.0, through which Huawei plans to invest US$150 million in digital talent development over the next five years. This program is expected to benefit more than 3 million additional people.

Huawei's Chairman Liang Hua speaks at the Tech & Sustainability: Everyone's Included forum
Huawei’s Chairman Liang Hua speaks at the Tech & Sustainability: Everyone’s Included forum

Huawei held a "Tech & Sustainability: Everyone’s Included" forum, co-hosted by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN). Representatives from Huawei, IUCN, the World Economic Forum, Carbon Disclosure Project (CDP), Global Enabling Sustainability Initiative (GeSI), and Singapore Institute of International Affairs (SIIA) participated to discuss the role of technology in driving sustainability and building a more inclusive, eco-friendly world.

Promoting equal access to education and talent development

According to a 2020 report by UNICEF and the International Telecommunication Union (ITU), about 2.2 billion people aged 25 years or younger still lack internet connections at home.

"Digital skills and literacy are not just the foundation for the digital economy; they are also a basic human right defined by the United Nations," said Huawei’s Chairman Liang Hua at the forum. "Today we are announcing Huawei’s Seeds for the Future Program 2.0. As part of our commitment to continuously developing talent, we will invest US$150 million in this program over the next five years and help college students and young people improve their digital skills. This program is expected to benefit more than 3 million additional people."

Huawei is committed to helping develop digital talent in the countries where it operates. In 2008, Huawei began to roll out talent development programs, through scholarships, technology competitions, and digital skills training, and has invested more than US$150 million in these programs. Huawei has since benefited more than 1.54 million people from over 150 countries.

As an echo for the forum, Huawei Asia Pacific held the APAC Media Virtual Roundtable with laser focus on addressing digital inclusion and sustainable development of this region. Jay Chen, Vice President of Huawei Asia Pacific, announced Huawei’s plan to cultivate more than 400,000 ICT talent in the next five years through multiple programs including Seeds for the Future in the region.

"In the digital economy, digital talent is playing an increasingly important role in driving digital transformation and economic growth. The access to education is vital for creating opportunities that support sustainable and fair development. Due to the pandemic, we are moving the program online and opening it up to more outstanding students than ever before," said Jay Chen.

Addressing environmental challenges and enabling green development

Climate change and environmental issues are becoming global challenges. Though carbon emissions declined over the past year due to the economic slowdown and worldwide lockdowns, emissions are rapidly rebounding as economies reopen. Shifting to a circular economy and achieving sustainable development is now a common goal for all countries.

"Green and sustainable development has become a top priority for global economies," said Liang. "Huawei has been leveraging its extensive experience in power electronics and energy storage as well as technical expertise in 5G, cloud, and AI, to develop its digital power business and provide digital power solutions for different industries. As of December 2020, Huawei’s digital power products and solutions have generated 325 billion kWh of electricity from renewable sources, and saved a total of 10 billion kWh of electricity. These efforts have resulted in a reduction of 160 million tons in CO2 emissions."

In Singapore, for example, Huawei FusionSolar Solution has supported Sunseap Group, a solar energy solutions provider, to build the world’s largest offshore floating Photovoltaic (PV) farms. With 13,312 solar panels, 40 inverters, and more than 30,000 floats, this five-hectare sea-based solar plant is estimated to produce up to 6,022,500 kWh of energy per year, supplying enough power for 1250 four-room public housing flats on the island and offsetting an estimated 4258 tons of carbon dioxide, according to Bruce Li, Managing Director of the Huawei Asia-Pacific Enterprise Digital Power Business.

"We feel that over the last decade, ASEAN is shifting from a very defensive, negative footprint or standing to a much more forward leaning. I’m glad to hear that Huawei would be one of companies also doing their part, if not more, through their supply chain," said Associate Professor Simon Tay, Chairman of SIIA at the forum, "By working together, countries can mutually support one another to meet their sustainability commitments. There are many areas where digital technology can support this, such as in enabling a transparent and verifiable carbon market. Singapore’s public and private sectors have expressed interest in working with its neighbors on climate action."

TAG Heuer X Super Mario is a US$ 2,000 Smartwatch and We Are Not Sure About It

TAG Heuer is a respectable watchmaker. They are one of the most recognisable brands in the world of watch makers and collectors. Sure, compared to brands like Patek Philippe, Hublot, and even Rolex, TAG Heuer seems to sit at a lower position. Still, they make watches that would still cost you anywhere from MYR 3,000 and above. They also made some of the most memorable collection pieces in the world of watch making.

TAG Heuer is a little different than most luxury watchmakers though. They are a little more adventurous with their branding. While plenty of watchmaking brands refrain from being title sponsors in the sporting world, TAG Heuer was aggressive in promoting their brand in the sporting world. Their most significant push was into the world of Formula 1, the pinnacle of motorsports, as official timekeepers for the longest time.

They are also, to this day, the only luxury watchmaker that dabbles in the world of smartwatches. Of course, because Apple develops their own watch with a very guarded WatchOS, Samsung’s Tizen OS is also a brand exclusive, and FitBit’s interface is not exactly created for smartwatches, TAG Heuer is left with Google’s Wear OS. Then again, this is not TAG Heuer’s first Wear OS smartwatch.

SBG8A13.EB0238 STILLLIFE 2 4 5
Source: TAG Heuer

The Connected series, as they call it is the watchmaker’s only Wear OS line-up. It is still currently the only luxury Google Wear device to hit the market. With prices starting at US$ 2,000, you can have your TAG Heuer Connected built with different materials to suit your taste. Now, you can look dorky with a new Super Maria limited edition too.

Yes, to be fair, the Super Mario collaboration from TAG Heuer is not really an announcement of a new product. It is merely an expansion, or a limited edition of an existing product line. The collaboration also brings with it new watch faces exclusive to the series. They are all Super Mario inspired. With the new watch faces, you also get new notification animations, especially when you hit a fitness goal let’s say.

While it is merely just a Google Wear OS device, there are some uniqueness to a Connected that makes it somewhat desirable. It has a proper crown that rotates and pushes in as a button for easier navigation of Wear OS. It has two very well-defined button too for more navigation work on your watch. Physical buttons and knobs on a smartwatch, we think, is the best way to navigate its interface still. The TAG Heuer x Super Mario Connected watch obviously has the very recognisable Mario branding on the crown. But all Connected smartwatches comes with TAG Heuer’s signature thick bezel look and stellar build quality; those are given because, TAG Heuer.

SBG8A13.BT6254 STILLLIFE 1 1 1
Source: TAG Heuer

You can expect the TAG Heuer x Super Mario Connected smartwatch to cost north of US$ 2,000 (MYR 8,401*). It is a special limited edition after all. In a sense, the Super Mario smartwatch should also appeal to the younger crowd, which is what TAG Heuer wants anyway. There is a problem, however. That problem lies mostly with Wear OS.

Wear OS is in a weird place now. We want to say that Google’s Wear OS is undergoing a transformation journey, one that we cannot see. Google announced that they are partnering exclusively with Samsung to move Wear OS into the future. Samsung’s huge success with their Tizen OS means that they are a prime candidate to co-develop the next wearable OS with. Samsung will also be giving up Tizen OS for that matter but gaining a whole new community of developers in return.

There are rumours that the next Wear OS that is co-developed with Samsung will require a new set of hardware to properly run. That also means that older hardware like TAG Heuer’s Connected smartwatch might not be able to run Wear OS. While Qualcomm has claimed that older Snapdragon for wearables can run later versions of Wear OS, we cannot be sure until the next iteration of Wear OS hits devices.

The TAG Heuer X Super Mario smartwatch comes with its own special edition case and obviously its own special straps. Its looks are subjective to its wearer, to be fair. To us, it looks like a regular smartwatch. It features whatever the regular Tag Heuer Connected smartwatch features too, including the current generation Google Wear OS.

It is a cool smartwatch to own if you have the money. At the same time, it might be a risky buy. Smartwatches are not statement piece material. A smartwatch must be functional as well, and of course, updated. In that case, the TAG Heuer x Super Mario Connected smartwatch’s price tag comes with a big ‘if’. It is great if it updates to the next Wear OS, it will be a glorified paper weight if it does not.

BitClout Lists on AscendEX, Continuing Incredible Growth

BitClout Expands its Network Providing More Opportunity for Users to Convert

SINGAPORE, July 14, 2021AscendEX, a global cryptocurrency financial platform with a comprehensive product suite, is excited to announce the listing of the BitClout token (CLOUT) on July 14 at 1 p.m. UTC.

BitClout Lists on AscendEX, Continuing Incredible Growth
BitClout Lists on AscendEX, Continuing Incredible Growth

BitClout is the first social network built with its own custom blockchain as its foundation. This new type of social network allows any creator to have their own token that their followers can buy and sell.

BitClout is a token-based marketplace for shares in someone’s (or something’s) reputation and influence. If an influencer goes viral on Instagram for something delightful, their token will appreciate in value. If an influencer says something inappropriate on Twitter, it could hurt the value of their token. In theory, every public action from anyone makes the creator token’s price subject to fluctuation and thus is tradable on the marketplace.

"BitClout is a disruptor to the status quo of cryptocurrency and social media, and it’s just getting started," said Shaun Maguire, partner at Sequoia, an early investor of BitClout. "We’re thrilled to have AscendEx’s support of BitClout, enabling the world to trade $CLOUT and join this radically different type of social network."

"BitClout is about individuals taking ownership of the media they create," said Andy Artz, partner at Social Capital. "By delivering an open protocol for decentralized social networks, BitClout is the aggregation of coins and code designed to create the first true open marketplace for ideas. By partnering with AscendEX, BitClout isn’t the only one continuing growth; the creators are."

"BitClout has attracted a huge ecosystem of 120+ new development projects and companies building on top of it," said Johnny Steindorff, partner at Distributed Global. "As a decentralized, open-source and creator-focused network, BitClout has the potential to grow into the leading WEB3 social network layer 1."

Today, a post submitted to a traditional social media platform belongs to a corporation, rather than the creator who posted it. In contrast, BitClout is a fully open-source, decentralized project with no company behind it– it’s just tokens and code. This means every creator has a direct relationship with their followers without intermediaries, which unlocks new ways to engage and monetize that aren’t based on ads. BitClout’s architecture is similar to Bitcoin, except it can support additional features and complex social network data like posts, profiles, followers, speculation features, and much more with significantly higher throughput and scale.

The BitClout blockchain has its own native cryptocurrency, called BitClout (CLOUT) that users can leverage to do all kinds of things on the platform, including buying "creator coins." Anyone can buy the BitClout cryptocurrency with Bitcoin in minutes through the app’s built-in decentralized "atomic swap" mechanism, available on the "Buy BitClout" page. The number of CLOUT tokens in circulation is capped at about 10.8 million, roughly half that of Bitcoin, making it naturally scarce.

BitClout’s lead creator and architect, pseudonymously known as @diamondhands, is a part of a group of developers who created the BitClout blockchain with the intent of turning it into an enduring positive force for humanity that can bring competition and innovation back to the internet.

BitClout’s backers include an impressive roster of blue-chip Silicon Valley venture capitalists — Sequoia, Social Capital, Andreessen Horowitz, TQ Ventures, Distributed Global Temasek, Arrington Capital, Long Journey Ventures, Ideo, Alexis Ohanian — along with high-profile crypto investors Coinbase Ventures, Winklevoss Capital, Blockchange, Sybil Capital, Pantera, PolyChain, and Digital Currency Group.

Emerging as a global leader in Laser TV industry through technological innovations

Hisense Laser TV’s success is also inextricably linked to its continuous technological breakthroughs. Since 2007, Hisense has begun to layout of developing Laser TVs. After 7 years of endeavour, Hisense made technical breakthrough from 0 to 1 and launched its first Laser TV in 2014. In 2021, Hisense is bringing Laser TV into a new era, by launching the world’s first full-colour 100-inch TriChroma Laser TV.

Hisense has applied for 1,366 global patents in the Laser TV sector and aims to propel the evolution of Laser TV industry by sharing patents, technologies and intellectual property rights with the industry within five years. President of Hisense Group, Jia Shaoqian said, "Currently Laser TV has achieved modest success. Hisense aims to form a technological ecology in the future, letting more enterprise into this industry."

Hisense Laser TV’s worldwide success isn’t a coincidence but a manifestation of Hisense’s technology strength, brand capability and innovation. With the remarkable Laser TV appearance in EURO 2020, it accelerated Hisense globalization process. Under Hisense’s initiative, Laser TV and the industry are witnessing a tremendous expansion worldwide.

"Today’s customers are increasingly demanding, they expect top quality and peace of mind from their solar systems," said Jeff Waters, Chief Executive Officer at Maxeon Solar Technologies. "These are the main reasons behind the success of our first AC panel under the Maxeon product line. Maxeon 5 AC panels are currently available in seventeen European countries and Australia where we see strong demand. The addition of a Performance line AC panel will enable us to tackle different market segments with a value line business proposition. The new Performance 3 AC panel continues Maxeon’s strategy to expand its Distributed Generation (DG) business to go ‘Beyond the Panel’ – leveraging our unique trained channel partners and their ability to translate our significant technology differentiation into compelling customer benefits across the many markets we serve."

The new Performance 3 AC panel offers installers more efficient installations, simplified logistics and stock management and more flexible system designs. For homeowners, this advanced solar solution can provide a system designed to maximise power output on their home’s unique roof and offers superior reliability in real-world conditions like weather events and shade. Furthermore, the AC architecture gives the flexibility to expand the solar system as energy needs evolve, accommodating EV charging, AC storage, the electrification of home appliances and more.

Assessing their experience with the AC solutions from Maxeon Solar Technologies, Jos Eisberg, CEO at Voltark, a German SunPower Premier Partner, says: "We pride ourselves to be at the forefront of solar technology, offering residential customers our expertise combined with the most innovative solar products for their homes. The AC Energy Solutions from Maxeon have consistently raised the bar for quality, reliability, and durability. For our customers, this innovative concept means maximized energy production regardless of the type and size of roof or space constraint. For us, the AC solution has translated into a faster and easier installation, with lower levels of maintenance required. An all-AC system is peace of mind for us and our valued customers, who can also benefit from 25 years of category-leading warranty protection."

AC modules have had early success in Australia as well. Keera Single, CEO at Solargain, a SunPower Elite Partner, said "SunPower AC panels offer proven performance in Australia’s tough climate, paired with the flexibility of each panel operating independently. Along with the 25-year on-roof product warranty, AC Energy Solutions from Maxeon appeal to even the most demanding customer."

"In addition, SunPower AC Energy Solutions offer a unique solution to customers who may have not been qualified for a conventional string system, so it’s a great opportunity for us to reach new customers. We are excited to add the Performance 3 AC panel to our product offering to ensure we are providing the highest quality solar systems to our Australia-wide market." Single concluded.

"We believe that our AC Energy Solutions’ unique value proposition of advanced technology, higher energy yield and proven reliability, combined with our knowledgeable channel partners, is a key growth driver in our global DG business. We are excited about the market potential we are unlocking with this platform and are convinced that these products will help drive accelerated adoption of solar energy among home-owners to continue Powering Positive Change." concluded Waters.

The new Performance 3 AC panel will be presented to the public during The smarter E Industry Days 2021, on July 23, 2021. Click here for more information and to register to the event.

Tech & Tonic S02 Episode 19 – Another Reference Smartphone? Really Qualcomm?

Qualcomm releases a Smartphone for Snapdragon Insider. Designed by ASUS and powered by Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 888 5G SoC, it is also one of the most powerful Android device you can get in the market. It is definitely the most powerful Vanilla Android device to date.

The package that comes with the smartphone is a pair of wireless earbuds made in collaboration with Master & Dynamics. You also get a charger and USB Type-C cable bundled in. Obviously the charger is the fastest charger with Qualcomm Quick Charge 5 technology available for the Qualcomm smartphone.

Alongside the super power that is the Qualcomm Snapdragon 888 5G SoC is also an ample 16GB of RAM and 512GB of storage. With those kind of specs, the device has more common with a gaming laptop than any other smartphone. This also makes it one of the most powerful Snapdragon powered smartphone in the current market.

The ASUS designed device is fronted by a 6.78-inch Full HD+ AMOLLED display. While that sounds underwhelming, the display responses at 1ms and refreshes at 144Hz. Okay, that still does not make it sound all that impressive, especially if you consider that the Sony Xperia 1 III packs a 4K display at 120Hz.

Out the back is a 64-Megapixel camera that is also flanked by an 8-Megapixel telephoto camera, and a 12-Megapixel ultra-wide camera. The camera is capable of shooting videos at 8K resolution. Out the front is a 24-Megapixel camera that is capable of Full HD videos too.

The price? It is US$ 1,499. At that price, it is easily one of the most expensive Android smartphones you can find in the current market. It rivals the price of an Apple iPhone even. Even with all the things you get with the package, it is still and expensive device. It is definitely a reference smartphone though.

While we do not thing “Smartphone for Snapdragon Insider” counts as a name, it is what it is. We also do not think we need another reference smartphone, especially one that is priced this high. Still, the exclusive device has not hit the market at this time. Until we get a hands-on with the device, we cannot comment on its full capabilities and features. Qualcomm thinks it is necessary though. Do you think it is necessary?
