Chindata Group Releases 2020 Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) Report

51 percent of its owned hyperscale data centers powered by renewable energy in 2020

BEIJING, April 2, 2021 — Chindata Group (Nasdaq: CD), a leading carrier-neutral hyperscale data center solution provider in Asia-Pacific emerging markets, has released its second annual Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) Report today, which highlights the company’s 2020 ESG results towards its 2030 carbon-neutrality goal and digital-inclusiveness vision.

With the theme of "Inspiring with Power", the Report includes a detailed roadmap for carbon neutrality, demonstrating Chindata Group’s sustainability and digital prosperity values. In December 2020, Chindata Group announced that all its hyperscale data centers in China would source 100 percent renewable energy and invest in clean energy with an installed capacity of no less than 2GW by 2030.

Mr Alex Ju, Founder and Chief Executive Officer, Chindata Group, commented, "Chindata Group is the first digital technology company in China to release a carbon-neutral roadmap. We focus on mastering the core technologies in key areas to address digital development challenges, laying a solid foundation for a more sustainable and inclusive digital life for all."

Some of the key highlights are:

  • Fifty-one percent of its owned data centers were powered by renewable energy, a 14 percent increase from 37 percent in 2019, making it the best performing digital technology company in terms of sustainability.
  • In 2020, Chindata Group reduced 368,886 tons of carbon dioxide emission, an equivalent of planting about 200,000 trees every day.
  • Chindata Group is China’s first data center company to disclose its power usage exceeding 1 billion kWh in 2020 and energy savings reaching 391,640,000 kWh.

Chindata Group published its inaugural ESG Report in 2019, after setting a long-standing goal of achieving 100 percent renewable energy for its hyperscale data center clusters.

US State Turns on COVID-19 Vaccine Appointment Scheduling Hotline in Less Than a Day with Bright Pattern

COVID-19 vaccine appointment hotline deployed in record time – 23 hours – by Atento and Bright Pattern with an agreement for 1500 agents

SOUTH SAN FRANCISCO, Calif., April 1, 2021 — Bright Pattern, a leading provider of AI-powered cloud contact center software, has been deployed to help schedule COVID-19 vaccination appointments. The appointment scheduling hotline needed to be deployed in less than a day to accommodate the rapid distribution of vaccinations to the citizens of the state. Bright Pattern, the contact center software with the fastest deployment time of less than half the industry average, was deployed in 23 hours, making it the fastest COVID hotline deployed to help decrease the spread of COVID-19. In just 23 hours, 200 remote agents were trained and started handling calls on the Bright Pattern platform with a record 14,000 calls on day one of the campaign.

Atento, one of the top five customer relationship management and business process outsourcing providers (BPO), evaluated many contact center solutions including Genesys and Avaya, but partnered with Bright Pattern because of its remote agent capabilities, ease of use, and speed of deployment. "Bright Pattern had a contact center up and running in just 23 hours. The other vendors we were talking with simply couldn’t deploy the agents quickly enough for this urgent need," said Hugo Martinez, Regional Technical Account Manager and Security at Atento. The Bright Pattern platform also provided the scalability needed. "In just a week of using Bright Pattern, we saw a 70% increase in agents and have plans to grow to 1500 agents over the next month," continued Martinez.

Bright Pattern has helped numerous existing and new customers deploy remote teams, provide safe work environments for agents, and improve customer satisfaction amid a global pandemic. Some of the innovative use cases Bright Pattern has seen since the pandemic include:

"COVID has spurred companies to think differently about how they communicate with their customers, and companies have become more nimble and innovative as a result. Getting vaccines out has been an issue, and Atento and Bright Pattern teamed up to deploy the fastest vaccine scheduling hotline yet using nimble cloud technology for remote agents in less than a day," said Ted Hunting, SVP of Marketing at Bright Pattern.

Companies of all sizes select Bright Pattern to support their customer care organizations because of its simplified – yet robust – omnichannel platform, offering traditional channels; emerging channels like Facebook Messenger; in-app customer support; enterprise functionality; cloud-first architecture; and the ability to modify without the time and cost of professional services. SafeRide unveils support for Vehicle Health Management industry standard at the ATA-TMC spring conference

SafeRide’s vInsight™ platform supports the SAE JA6268 standard and enables state-of-the-art Integrated Vehicle Health Management (IVHM) solutions for fleets, OEMs, and suppliers

TEL AVIV, Israel, April 1, 2021 — SafeRide Technologies, a leading provider of AI-based vehicle health management (VHM) solutions unveiled today that its vInsight™ platform has been extended to support the SAE JA6268 VHM standard. The vInsight VHM platform includes a deep learning development tool for fleets, OEMs, and Tier-1 suppliers that generates VHM monitors for deployment on board the vehicle or in the cloud.

The SAE Health-Ready Components and Systems (HRCS) Consortium™, a subgroup of SAE, was created to increase the impact of SAE’s JA6268 standard. It provides standard templates for common vehicle components and systems that describe their failure modes, the mechanisms to monitor their health, and the data required to enable their health monitoring.

SafeRide is collaborating with HRCS members, including General Motors, Volvo Group, Garret in Motion, Nexteer, and others, to implement the best practices and guidance provided in the SAE JA6268 standard to facilitate the integration of IVHM functionality in health-ready components and systems to meet the needs and objectives of the industry in a cost-effective manner.

SafeRide together with other HRCS partners demonstrated at the American Trucking Association’s Technology and Maintenance Council (ATA-TMC) conference on March 31st the benefits of using the JA6268 standard to streamline the delivery of vehicle health data to fleet operators and OEMs.

At the ATA-TMC conference SafeRide presented how JA6268 templates can be imported into and customized by the vInsight Developer tool to enable automated, simplified, and efficient development and delivery of vehicle health indicators to fleets, OEMs, and suppliers.

Existing VHM solutions rely on diagnostic trouble codes (DTCs) and telematics data to detect and predict malfunctions. DTCs can only detect failures after they occur, and they provide limited insights about the problem. This can lead to a complex and expensive repair process, and sometimes a wrong diagnosis. Current telematics solutions are limited by network bandwidth and access to data; therefore, they may fail to address the growing complexity of modern vehicles.

"OEMs and fleets are paying billions of dollars every year in warranty claims and maintenance cost" said Gil Reiter, SafeRide’s Vice President of Product Management and Marketing. "The vInsight platform, with JA6268 support, can help OEMs and fleets reduce these costs significantly, while enabling smooth and interoperable deployment into existing fleets and new vehicles."

SafeRide’s vInsight™ platform enables customers to develop, train, optimize, test, and deploy deep-learning based algorithms for VHM using a rich library of production grade models and design templates for major vehicle systems such as engine, transmission, emission, braking, battery management, and more. vInsight Developer can generate compressed and optimized models for embedded deployment onboard vehicles, or for remote deployment in the cloud.

"SafeRide’s vInsight platform brings together AI and domain knowledge" said Steve Holland, SAE HRCS Consortium Chairman and former GM VHM Chief Technologist. "This unique combination enables powerful IVHM solutions that are changing how we manage vehicle health".

SafeRide’s vInsight solution is currently deployed in pilot projects with several major OEMs and fleets.

Modern-day ‘Mogao Grottoes’ hidden in Beijing airport

BEIJING, April 1, 2021 — A feature story by China.org.cn on scholars and experts’ work to save documents, images and memories related to groundbreaking murals painted at Beijing Capital International Airport:

Scholars and experts are working hard to save documents, images and memories related to groundbreaking murals painted in 1979 at Beijing Capital International Airport, in order to create an informative book and preserve their legacy, as well as celebrate Tsinghua University’s 110th anniversary.

A detail from the mural "Nezha Stirs Up the Sea" by Zhang Ding.
A detail from the mural "Nezha Stirs Up the Sea" by Zhang Ding.

"The airport’s murals are like the 20th-century continuation of those at the ancient Dunhuang Mogao Grottoes in Gansu province, continuing the legacy of Chinese murals," said Zhou Aimin, associate professor at the Academy of Arts & Design at Tsinghua University (AADTHU).

Special history

Beijing Capital International Airport opened in 1958, and construction of its first international terminal building began in 1974. Four years later, the Ministry of Culture and the Civil Aviation Administration of China invited teachers and students from the Central Institute of Arts and Crafts (now the AADTHU) to create art deco murals for the new building.

Zhang Ding, then-president of the Central Institute of Arts and Crafts, headed the creative team behind what was the first large-scale national-level mural project since the founding of the People’s Republic of China (PRC). The faculty and students worked with 52 artists from 17 provinces and municipalities across China to create more than 50 artworks, including murals and oil paintings. Completed in 1979, these artworks were placed at various sites around the terminal, from waiting rooms to restaurants.

At the 4th Congress of the China Federation of Literary and Art Circles (CFLAC) in 1979, fellow artists praised the airport murals for blazing a new path for the artform in China. "The creators emancipated their minds, bravely innovated, and integrated China’s traditional mural crafts and modern techniques," said Zhou Yang, then-president of CFLAC.

Tang Wei, now a professor of AADTHU, took part in the project as a college student in 1979. "At first I felt a little bit clueless, but when I started working, I was very excited and energized in that special atmosphere, inspired by such renowned artists and fellow participants, who were also excited to look at the blank concrete terminal walls with their own visions."

Tang was tasked with helping artist Yuan Yunfu finish the mural "Mountains and Rivers of Sichuan." When she looked back on the murals, she called them "creations with long artistic accumulation," while she described the artists as "constantly striving for perfection."

For example, Zhang Ding was both directing the team to create their works, while himself creating a mural titled "Nezha Stirs Up the Sea." Tang recalled: "He insisted on using traditional Chinese techniques to create the contemporary murals, repeatedly testing various paints and pigments to find the best solutions."

Cultural impact

A detail from the mural "Song of the Forest" by Zhu Danian.
A detail from the mural "Song of the Forest" by Zhu Danian.

Du Dakai, another prominent professor at AADTHU, also participated in the airport project, assisting artist Zhu Danian. "When the murals were all finished, I could feel the shockwaves," he said, noting that many people made the trip out to view the artworks, despite the airport’s remote location. A detail from the mural "Song of the Forest," created by Zhu, was later featured on the cover of an art textbook for China’s high school.

Du remembered a visit to the airport by Kuwabara Sumio, a renowned Japanese art critic and scholar: "He said, ‘This is the spring of China; a new era has come.’"

The artworks at Beijing Capital International Airport have influenced generations of Chinese artists, as well as serving as an aesthetic education for domestic and foreign travelers, acting as symbols of Chinese culture, and representing China’s reform and opening-up.

Artist Yuan Yunsheng painted female nudes in a mural portraying the Dai ethnic minority’s Water-Sprinkling Festival — a remarkable feat at a time when Chinese society was relatively conservative.

Henry Fok Ying-tung, the late Hong Kong-based tycoon, once recalled: "At that time, when investing in the mainland, we always feared policy changes. Every time I went to Beijing, I had to see if the mural was still there. If it was, my heart would be more secure."

Preserving memories

As many of the artists and participants of the project have grown old or passed away, historians, scholars and experts were determined to ensure the artworks will live on forever.

Back in 2019, the AADTHU held an exhibition marking the project’s 40th anniversary. Nearly 30 former participants of the project were interviewed to record their memories, and documents, manuscripts and photos related to the project were also collected.

In addition, since April 2019, the AADTHU has been compiling a book on the Beijing airport murals based on two years of research. This year, the book will be published as part of celebrations to mark the 110th anniversary of Tsinghua University.

"An international airport is the gateway to a country. Machines or equipment may become obsolete over time, but the value of art will never go out of fashion. If an artwork was created based on ancient traditions but has new innovations, it is a valuable creation," said the late Ikuo Hirayama, one of the most celebrated contemporary Japanese artists, when commenting on Beijing’s airport murals.

International Consortium iTrazo, Persequor, Tive Delivers Digital Traceability Solutions to APAC

APAC companies anticipate end-to-end IoT traceability solution to track and trace products moving through supply chains

MELBOURNE, Australia, COPENHAGEN, Denmark and BOSTON, April 1, 2021iTrazo, Persequor and Tive – a consortium of digital supply chain experts from Australia, Denmark and the United States have formed an alliance that will deliver supply chain transparency and serve the traceability needs of customers across the region. For safety, quality, sustainability or provenance – a product’s end-to-end journey, visibility has become a base expectation for most companies, customers, and consumers.

The partners bring together a data-rich ecosystem of collaborative and complementary offerings within track and trace, traceability, customer engagement and visibility. "By working with the consortium, companies have immediate access to multi-sensor trackers, track and trace platforms, mobile Apps, sophisticated repositories and a multitude of software specifically created for optimal and actionable granular traceability," said Ron Volpe, SVP International Markets for Persequor.

Reeanjou Ram, iTrazo’s CEO and Founder, feels strongly about collaborations, as she believes the right partnerships bring innovation and cost efficiencies. Reeanjou explains, "joining forces ensures readily available end-to-end solutions. Our traceability platform is complemented by Persequor’s SAGA repositories and software, all based on EPCIS standards. Track and trace events can be stored, monitored and analyzed from origin to consumption, enabling businesses to track billions of unique items, products and events."

Tive provides cost-effective access to IoT tracking devices and insights. Many IoT devices are still in the very early stages of development and can be a costly addition to customers seeking multiple trace technology input. IoT addresses greater convenience, higher efficiency, improved quality of production and better utilization of crucial event data. The emergence of high-performance and cost-effective IoT devices such as those offered by Tive gives our customers more opportunities and options to transform their products.

Tive delivers an additional layer of load-sensing data from its Solo™ 5G trackers on shipment location and condition – temperature, light, humidity and shock. Meaningful insight data on carrier and route performance streams in real time as trackers are deployed on thousands of global shipments, making it easier for businesses to track and monitor their in-transit goods Globally. "We believe that iTrazo, Persequor and Tive each uniquely contribute to the consortium’s offering, as collaboration and open access is a strong driver for Tive who has partnered to create the Open Visibility Network (OVN) that increases visibility data across various platforms to benefit everyone involved in global supply chains," said Hany Amer, Director APAC, Tive.

The organic growth of ecosystems of supply chain partners with a common objective is not a new way of doing business, going back to the movement of goods via the Silk Road through Central Asia. Also not new, though slightly newer, is the role technology plays in creating new value through partnerships. What is new is the realization during 2020 that digitization is no longer an option to manage today’s supply chains, which in turn encouraged iTrazo, Persequor and Tive to partner and innovate together to bring digital traceability solutions to companies across APAC.

Attack of the Clubhouse Clones – Spotify, LinkedIn & Discord Enter the Foray

Clubhouse is arguably the largest buzz word in social media right now. The audio only social media app has been in the news thanks to technopreneurs like Elon Musk. That said, the platform has gained momentum due to its ability of bringing like-minded people together to speak and interact. The platform has become somewhat of a sanctuary for those looking for fun conversations, support and even escape – the three things that people are sorely lacking during the pandemic.

Thanks to the popularity of Clubhouse, we’ve seen a slew of other platforms such as Twitter, Facebook and Instagram come up with their own takes on the concept. The most recent was the launch of Instagram’s Live Rooms and Twitters Spaces. The latter launched earlier this month. Twitter’s Space rolled out to iOS and a limited number of Android users when it was initially discovered; many of whom were unable to host their own Spaces. However, it looks like more of us will be able to host Spaces and soon.

Source: Discord

If Twitter isn’t your groove, it looks like Discord has rolled out a new feature called Stage Channels which bring the same features to the forefront of the platform. The new Stage Channels allow users to have and sit in on live, moderated conversations. Unlike its normal channels, Stage Channels highlight the speakers while others join in the conversation as part of the audience. Audience members will have access to a raise hand button which allows them to indicate to the moderators that they wish to speak. Moderators will also be able to invite audience members to speak. Yep – that’s pretty much Clubhouse on Discord. However, the biggest difference between what Discord is doing is that the Stage Channels feature is available across all versions of their app now.

Spotify, on the other hand, isn’t reinventing the wheel. Instead, the company has acquired Betty Labs, the company behind the live sports audio app, Locker Room. The app is already available on iOS and will be making its way to Android in the near future. It will also serve a wider range of audiences with the topic focus expanding from only sports talk. The company sees the app as a natural complement to the Spotify app allowing creators to interact directly and in real-time with their audiences.

According to a statement from Gustav Söderström to The Verge, Chief R&D Officer at Spotify, the app will remain separate from the main Spotify app. However, it will be rebranded in the near future. The app will also allow all users to host their own session – not just approved users. With users already uploading recordings of their sessions on Clubhouse and Twitter Spaces to Anchor, Spotify’s podcast publishing tool. It looks like the app will streamline the process allowing users a more unified experience and feed the growing podcast ecosystem on Spotify.

Source: LinkedIn

While both Spotify, Twitter and Discord are looking at creating a platform for a wide, diverse range of content, LinkedIn is looking enhancing your professional profile. The company is introducing a “Creator” mode that allows you to get followers on your profile. The new profile will allow users to be followed in a similar way to the pages on Facebook. However, in addition to this, LinkedIn seems to be working on a similar Clubhouse-like approach to live audio content that it believes will be a good complement to a professional profile.

So, with more and more companies releasing their own versions of Clubhouse – where do you, our reader fall with the rise of live audio? Are you going to be taking part in the conversation? Which platform will you be using?

We like Lenovo notebooks; we never make that a secret. We think that they really know how to make great notebook PCs. In fact, we own Lenovo notebook PCs ourselves.

We thought that one of their most interesting products was their ThinkBook. It was made with productivity and durability in mind. The excellent keyboard is a bonus too.

Lenovo has launched the new generation ThinkBook in Malaysia. This is technically the second generation of the brilliant notebook series. The last generation was two years ago.

This time as well, they launched three new notebooks in their ThinkBook series. They launched the ThinkBook 13s Gen 2 i, the ThinkBook 14s Yoga i, and ThinkBook 15 Gen 2 i. Yes, they are all in three different sizes.

Lenovo ThinkBook 13s Gen 2 i

The Lenovo ThinkBook 13s Gen 2 i comes packing Intel’s 11th Generation Core processors. It will also come with Intel’s new Iris Xe Graphics, which also means that it should be one powerful notebook PC. Of course, these things also mean that the Lenovo ThinkBook 13s is an Intel EVO certified platform.

True to its name, it has a 13.3-inch display. You can opt for a an WQXGA (2,560 x 1,600) display. The display is also a unique 16:10 ratio, which also means that it is somehow just a little more compact than before.

To make the notebook even more of a productivity beast, Lenovo packs Thunderbolt 4 so you can connect to an external display when you need to. You can also opt for a 4th Generation PCIe storage unit for a quicker workflow. Of course, it has all-day battery to keep you running through your workday.

Lenovo ThinkBook 14s Yoga Gen 2 i

If you need something even more flexible to work with, there is the Yoga variant of the ThinkBook series. The Lenovo ThinkBook 14s Yoga will be the perfect device for you to work with in any situation.

Of course, this 14-inch convertible packs Intel’s latest generation Core processors. It also packs Intel’s Iris Xe Graphics to boot as well. That mostly means that you can get more than just word processing or powerpoints done with the notebook.

Convertible also means that you get a nice touch display and the benefit of a stylus on the Lenovo ThinkBook 14s Yoga. The Smart Pen, as Lenovo calls it, docks with the device as well so you do not risk losing your stylus in the abyss of your bag or misplacing it in a coffee shop somewhere.

Lenovo ThinkBook 15 Gen 2 i

The largest ThinkBook in the series is the ThinkBook 15. The Gen 2 device packs a large 15.6-inch display as per its name. While this looks like a plain notebook, it is more than that though. It comes packing integrated wireless earbuds which can be stored within the notebook.

The notebook acts as a charging case too in this case. The moment you pull the earbuds out, the earbuds connect to the notebook instantly. This could really help when you need to take your video calls on the go.

Of course, it packs Intel’ 11th Generation Intel Core processors and Intel’s Iris Xe Graphics for all the modern power you need in a mobile platform. For more flexibility, you get to opt for a combination of an HDD and SSD, or just go with two SSDs to get the best out of the notebook. Of course, because of the larger footprint, you have a full-sized keyboard with number keys.

Applications of Location-Based & Geospatial Intelligence Data

NEW YORK, April 1, 2021 — Enterprises, government agencies, and law enforcement use Cobwebs Technologies‘ geospatial data and spatial analysis to get location intelligence, which is a powerful tool to understand situations or events, get insight into, e.g., where events take place and who is involved to make informed decisions. Companies use location intelligence to, e.g., pinpoint optimal locations for their brick-and-mortar stores, government agencies use it in time of, e.g., natural disasters such as wildfires, and law enforcement uses it to identify the locations of threat actors, crime syndicates, criminal acts, and mass events turning into riots. In other words, location-based data provides unique insights, reveals hidden relationships, patterns, and trends that are crucial for follow-up.

In general, harnessing geospatial data requires a geospatial intelligence platform. Collecting enormous amounts of location-based data on the surface, deep, and dark web is extremely labor-intensive. Due to limited budgets and time restraints, a user-friendly WEBINT platform is needed that scrapes from all layers of the web, analyzes the collected data, and presents the actionable results in a user-friendly GUI. The cutting-edge location solution of Cobwebs Technologies automatically reveals and analyzes location-based data using interactive maps. It only collects open-source data to comply with the stringent statutory rules and regulations regarding data protection. This allows analysts and investigators to efficiently generate intelligent insights from the huge amounts of hidden and complex OSINT data. Connecting open-source web data with live and real-world information is a valuable addition to analyses and investigations.

A geospatial intelligence platform, such as the WebLoc from Cobwebs Technologies, provides real-world insights into locations and data that are of interest to analysts and investigators. The unique capabilities of such a platform enable location-based information to get location intelligence and investigative reports. The platform is designed to meticulously race through and scan endless digital channels from the web ecosystem, collecting and analyzing huge amounts of location-based data in any specified geographic location. This information is then displayed on a simple and map-centric interface which allows users to conduct a map-based and visual investigation.

The interactive map allows for filtering and analyzing data for gaining vital intelligence. This way, location-based structures and unstructured data from a large range of sources reveal various threats, including off-the-grid threat actors. Analysts and investigators can also use the collected and analyzed data for geofencing in order to discover relations between seemingly non-related data points. The platform also allows users to get historical data and use analytic tools for getting actionable insights. By collecting and analyzing real-time location intelligence using non-intrusive methods, threats can be identified for quick action. Furthermore, hidden connections are revealed, combining location-based data and open-source information and presenting it in an interactive multi-layered map for government agencies and law enforcement to take quick action.

With location-based intelligence using a WEBINT platform informed decisions can be made without setting foot on the ground, based on the generated dynamic reports. These automated real-time reports are the result of various location-based filtering inputs.

To summarize, location-based and geospatial intelligence data are crucial for analyses and investigations to make informed decisions. Only a geospatial intelligence platform can provide analysts and investigators with the location-based intelligence they need.
