Elekta and IBA strengthen partnership to help cancer centers integrate proton therapy

Alliance pairs world-class treatment hardware and supporting software for superior proton therapy ecosystem

STOCKHOLM, March 5, 2021 — Elekta (EKTA-B.ST) announced today that its latest solution for proton therapy, Monaco®* treatment planning for protons, has received 510(k) clearance from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration. Monaco brings robust functionality for proton therapy, featuring fast optimization and calculation via the Monte Carlo algorithm and user-configurable templates for different body sites to enable rapid proton plan creation. Monaco is a component of Elekta’s Treatment Management Solution, which provides a full-featured environment for delivering proton therapy.

"Adding new technology to a department can be a complex task, and especially so for a highly advanced technique like proton therapy," says Maurits Wolleswinkel, President Linac Solutions. "In partnership with IBA, however, Elekta’s Treatment Management solution, which includes Monaco, ProKnow and MOSAIQ Plaza digital tools – including MOSAIQ Oncology Information System – provides the ideal ecosystem to integrate proton therapy, helping centers expand their capabilities to choose the best care for their patients."

Elekta was among the first companies to support proton therapy with treatment planning and oncology information systems. The company has built on this proven history to bring high quality planning, combined with intelligent, automated oncology workflows.

The partnership with IBA, a world leader in proton therapy, provides a very strong foundation with an unmatched track record of over 100,000 patients treated by IBA’s clinical partners.

"We are excited to continue expanding our successful partnership with Elekta. As proton therapy becomes an essential treatment modality for an increasing number of indications, it is critical to seamlessly integrate our solutions into the clinic and optimize workflows. Thanks to the joint in-house expertise of Elekta and IBA, and leveraging on the largest and most knowledgeable community of clinical partners in Proton Therapy, IBA is ideally positioned to complement Elekta’s integrated software solutions," says Jeroen Cammeraat, Chief Commercial Officer at IBA.

"Our ecosystem of digital tools will not only simplify and automate the oncology department, but will also enable clinicians to continuously improve, treat more patients and reduce operational costs," Wolleswinkel says.

By harnessing Elekta’s oncology informatics infrastructure, users can benefit from department-wide integration and standardized workflows. All radiotherapy machines, including linear accelerators and proton systems, will be connected, thus optimizing efficiency. This infrastructure also gives clinicians powerful analytics tools to go beyond standard efficiency improvements, using the wealth of data that the department generates to pinpoint improvements within processes. Overall, this contributes to higher productivity and cost reduction, and enables value-based healthcare.

Elekta and IBA have been collaborating for the last 20 years to help oncology centers integrate the cancer treatment modality into their patient care environment.

DFRobot’s HuskyLens, an AI Vision Sensor, included in the “forget-me-not” for Alzheimer’s patients

SHANGHAI, March 4, 2021 — Alzheimer’s disease is a common syndrome among older people worldwide. In China, there are about 10 million Alzheimer’s patients by now, ranking first in the world. By 2050, the number of Alzheimer’s patients in China is estimated to reach 45 million.

Lu Yuan, a Chinese teenager, invented an AI Wearable called the "forget-me-not" for his grandmother, who is in the early stage of Alzheimer’s disease. The AI Wearable can help patients recognize their family members and guide them home through a built-in voice assistant.

AI Wearable “forget-me-not” Version 2.0
AI Wearable “forget-me-not” Version 2.0

According to Lu’s introduction, the AI Wearable uses Arduino Nano and is equipped with a built-in HuskyLens AI Vision Sensor developed by DFRobot, an ultraviolet sensor, MP3 module, and uses Mind+ for programming. The overall appearance is modeled by 123D Design and the shell is made using SLA (Stereolithography) technology and conducted the process of grinding, polishing and painting.

The built-in HuskyLens in the AI Wearable is an easy-to-use AI vision sensor. It adopts the built-in machine learning technology which can identify human faces. By a simple click, HuskyLens can finish the AI training and start to learn and recognize the new face. Engineered with a built-in UART or I2C interface, HuskyLens can seamlessly dock with Arduino Nano. If the AI Wearable recognizes it is a recorded face, it will control the MP3 module, and tell the Alzheimer’s patients through the earpiece whom they are talking to, along with other bits of information.

The built-in ultraviolet sensor can sense the intensity of ultraviolet rays to tell Alzheimer’s patients whether they are indoors or outdoors. If the AD patients are outdoors for 20 minutes or longer, the AI Wearable will remind them to go back home and play home addresses at the same time.

Of course, being able to make such an invention at such an age is inseparable from his specialized learning since he was a child. According to Lu’s introduction, he got in touch with programming when he was a fourth grader. Lu’s heart-warming invention has become a hit on Chinese social media and hopes this invention helps more Alzheimer’s patients in the future.

The Xiaomi Redmi Note 10 Series is Here for MYR 799!

Xiaomi’s Redmi line-up has been the long serving champion of great value for money smartphones. Okay, I might have exaggerated their position a minute there. But they are really good at what they do; they are really good at making budget friendly smartphones that punches above their weight.

Yesterday they launched the Xiaomi Redmi Note 10 and Redmi Note10 Pro in Malaysia with prices starting at MYR 799. The new Redmi Note series is, technically, the brand’s most advanced Redmi yet in certain areas.

Redmi Note 10 Pro

You get a very powerful and proven Qualcomm Snapdragon 700 series in the form of a Snapdragon 732G. Unfortunately, you do not get 5G capabilities with the chipset. Then again, 5G technology has yet to see public daylight in Malaysia at this time.

The Redmi Note 10 Pro more than makes up for it with an ultra-powerful 108-Megapixel main camera though. Yes, it is the same 108-Megapixel sensor that the Xiaomi Mi11 gets. You also get the enhanced Night Mode 2.0 for even better low-light shooting capabilities with the high-resolution camera. That added with the dual native ISO nature of the sensor means you can really take this device to the night. The 108-Megapixel camera also comes with an 8-Megapixel ultra-wide sensor, 5-Megapixel telemacro sensor, and a 2-Megapixel depth sensor to make it even more versatile.

You also get the Note 10 Pro with 120Hz AMOLED display. This makes this mid-ranger one of the most unique smartphones in the market. You seldom see 120Hz refresh rates in smartphones at this price, at this range. The 6.67-inch Full HD AMOLED display boasts Full HD+ and is protected by a Corning Gorilla Glass 5.

Of course, all that power needs a lot of electricity to keep it going. That is where the 5,020mAh battery comes in to ensure you get a whole day of running time. You can get the battery charged quickly too at 33W.

Redmi Note 10

The Redmi Note 10 is a little less impressive with 6.43-inch AMOLED DotDisplay taking up its front. But you still get 33W charging on the impressive 5,000mAh battery. You also still get dual speakers similar to the Redmi Note 10 Pro with Hi-Res Audio certification for immersive audio.

The Processor is a step down from the Redmi Note10 as well at a Qualcomm Snapdragon 678. The System on a Chip (SoC) is still no slouch though. You can still play modern mobile games with it with no issues.

On the camera front, while not as impressive as the 108-Megapixel main camera flanked by three other cameras, the Redmi Note 10 still has four cameras packed into the rear section of the device. You get a 48-Megapixel main shooter, which is still relevant today, an 8-Megapixel ultra-wide shooter, a 2-Megapixel macro sensor, and a 2-Megapixel depth sensor.

Redmi Note 10S

Want a higher-resolution camera without breaking your bank with the high-end Redmi Note 10 Pro? There is the in-between model that is the Redmi Note 10S.

The Xiaomi Redmi Note 10S features a 64-Megapixel main shooter that is flanked by an 8-Megapixel ultra-wide sensor, a 2-Megapixel macro camera, and another 2-Megapixel depth camera. You can see a pattern emerging here. The 64-Megapixel sensor though should be able to give you super clear, super pretty photos out-of-the-box.

You are not getting a Qualcomm Snapdragon to boot here though. You are getting a MediaTek Helio G95 SoC to work with. The MediaTek Helio G95 is proven to be a potent and capable processor in mobile gaming, so you should not be left wanting more.

You also get 5,000mAh battery packed in its body for all-day battery and even more. If that is not enough, the battery charges at up to 33W too for a quick trip to the sockets.

Redmi Note 10 5G

If you want to take advantage of 5G networking when its available then you have to look at the 5G variant of the new Xiaomi Redmi Note series. It is the only Redmi Note series that is powered by MediaTek’s latest Dimensity 700 with 5G capabilities. There are some compromises on this device though.

For one, you get one less camera. You still get a high-resolution 48-Megapixel main camera to work with. But you are only getting two other cameras besides. You get a 2-Megapixel macro sensor and another 2-Megapixel depth sensor. You also lose out on the front camera at 8-Megapixel compared to 13 (10 and 10S) and 16 (10 Pro).

You do get a bigger display though at 6.5-inch. You also get an impressive 90Hz AdaptiveSync refresh rate that will optimise itself to keep your device lasting as long as it can on a single charge. You also get a 5,000mAh battery for an impressive battery life. Although, you only get up to 18 in charging speed.

MWC Shanghai 2021 Makes A Dramatic Return With 200,000 Representatives As An International Physical & Digital Event

HONG KONG, March 5, 2021Connected Impact was the theme of MWC Shanghai 2021 and the GSMA has just revealed that the event held in February attracted around 25,000 attendees from 114 countries and territories. In a Covid era with extensive travel restrictions, this is an outstanding result. The My MWCS Online portal transformed the three-day event into a truly global affair which accounted for approximately 30 per cent of attendee turnout. Another 175,000 people viewed presentations, keynotes, and other program components via the event’s official media partner, C114. Content from the event remains available over the next few weeks and can be accessed here: https://mwc2021-login.gotin.online/login_page?lang=en.

As Asia’s leading exhibition and conference for the mobile ecosystem, MWC Shanghai attracted leaders across mobile and adjacent industries. With 350 speakers and senior-level executives making up around 58% of the conference crowd, including 576 CEO’s, the event spanned 50,000 sqm across the Shanghai New International Expo Centre and Kerry Hotel Pudong. Playing host to 220 exhibitors and sponsors, the event was once again carbon-neutral and included discussion of the mobile industry’s actions on reducing carbon footprints.

"MWC Shanghai 2021 was a resounding success, safely held with enhanced Covid precautions, and despite extensive domestic and international travel and capacity restrictions triggered by the global pandemic. The event went ahead as a positive signal of our industry’s determination to connect people, industry and society and contributing to global recovery," said CEO GSMA Ltd., John Hoffman. "China has demonstrated an extraordinary commitment to growing the 5G landscape and was the perfect choice to launch our MWC series for 2021. I sincerely thank the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology, Cyberspace Administration of China, Shanghai Municipal People’s Government and Pudong New District Municipal Government, our Board, Partners, Exhibitors, Sponsors, Speakers, the Press and all involved in this event that make MWC Shanghai 2021 a reality."

The place to launch new products

MWC Shanghai 2021 was also a platform for product innovation, including a range of pioneering devices from leading players. Amongst the line-up was ZTE’s Axon 30 smartphone, its latest endeavour to design a phone with a selfie camera hidden under the display. Oppo showed a 125-watt flash charger, which can fully recharge a smartphone in 20 minutes. Huawei, meanwhile, presented its folding Mate X2 handset, which the company proclaimed can be closed without there being a gap around the hinge, an issue that has plagued similar designs.

The IN crowd

Our new 5G Innovation Zone gave start-ups and entrepreneurs a platform to connect with investors and become future disruptors.

The zone included 80 exhibitors, displaying immersive 5G experiences that leveraged China Telecom’s 5G, Cloud XR and Digital Twin technologies, creating a unique experience for participants by moving them from the physical space into the virtual dimension. It removed physical constraint and greatly enriched the quality of the exhibition.

It also showcased how the most cutting-edge 5G thinking and technology is already serving society, providing in-person and virtual guests with the opportunity to explore the best examples.

2021 AMOs Success

The Asia Mobile Awards are always a highlight of MWC Shanghai, and this year was no exception. The Outstanding Contribution to the Asia Mobile Industry Award recognises sustained or extraordinary contributions by individuals, organisations or collaborative achievements that advance the value and benefits of mobile communications for people, business and societies in Asia. This year, Mats Granryd, Director General of the GSMA, was proud to announce joint winners, Wang Xiaochu, chairman and CEO of China Unicom and Ke Ruiwen, chairman and CEO China Telecom, for the world’s largest 5G commercial network sharing project.

The second honour, Smartphone of the Year, is awarded for outstanding performance, innovation and leadership as determined by assessing smartphones on the market during the last 18 months. John Hoffman announced the 2021 award went to Apple for the Apple iPhone 12 Pro Series. The judges also gave a special commendation to the Samsung Galaxy Z-Flip for continued innovation and development in the flexible display field.

Our thanks

In the most challenging circumstances, people came together. They demonstrated the ecosystem’s strength, commitment to innovation, and firm belief that mobile technology must play a vital role in the global recovery. Our sincere thanks to our Board, Partners, Exhibitors, Sponsors, Speakers, the Press and all involved in this event. Your resilience, commitment, and generosity were felt by participants worldwide and created hope, sending a positive signal about what 2021 has in store.

Looking to Barcelona

"The next platform for the mobile communications industry is MWC Barcelona in June," said Mats Granryd, Director General, GSMA. "The lessons learnt in Shanghai and the momentum gained will enable us to deliver another world-class event. The global recovery from the pandemic will continue to rely on our industry’s technology. The prospects for wireless connectivity have never been greater. Barcelona will be the place to be for anyone wanting to maximise those opportunities."

Chinese Industrial Internet Solution to Lead New Tech Revolution

BEIJING, March 4, 2021 — The world-leading provider of solutions to better life Haier’s COSMOPlat topped the list of China’s 15 leading domestic cross-industry and cross-domain industrial internet platforms unveiled by the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology at the end of 2020. The evaluation was an effort to boost the development of China’s industrial internet.

Haier Group President Zhou Yunjie (left), visited Qingdao Choho Industrial Co. Ltd. on February 23. Haier’s COSMOPlat established a strategic cooperation last May with Choho, helping the company in digital transformation and upgrading.

COSMOPlat is the world’s first industrial internet platform that allows whole-process user participation. It has been assigned by the three major international standardization organizations – IEEE, IEC and ISO, the leaders to formulate international standards of mass customization solutions.

The European Union (EU) has invited COSMOPlat to get involved in its GAIA-X initiative, a cloud project aiming to enhance Europe’s data infrastructure and digital sovereignty. The EU also has decided to build the 10th innovation center for industrial internet in China, with COSMOPlat as the only partner outside the EU.

User involvement is one of the main reasons these organizations have chosen COSMOPlat as a partner. Henning Kagermann, known as the father of Industry 4.0, said that COSMOPlat builds an ecosystem on the basis of user experience, rather than just focusing on factories and automation.

The platform has so far tapped into 15 sectors, from building a customization network in the fashion industry involving designers, garment factories and clients to offering solutions to the suppliers, purchasers and processors in the stone mining business.

Haier has also expanded COSMOPlat to 20 countries in the world, boosting the growth of its international brands, such as GE Appliances in the United States, Candy in Italy and Fisher & Paykel in New Zealand.

Globally, industrial internet platforms in different regions show distinguishing characteristics. The US, led by GE and Amazon, uses its advanced Internet, information, communication and software technologies to reshape manufacturing in a top-down approach. Europe, on the other hand, with Siemens, Bosch and SAP giving full play to their advantages in high-end manufacturing, focuses on a bottom-up optimization of production process that covers intelligent factories and smart manufacturing and logistics.

China has also witnessed robust growth of industrial internet over recent years. There are about 600 industrial internet platforms worldwide, of which 500 are based in China. As both a global major manufacturer and an Internet powerhouse, China is building a user-driven industrial internet ecosystem, which highlights the linkage and interactions between the industries and users.

Haier’s COSMOPlat is a representative of the Chinese-style industrial internet, and this model is widely anticipated to bring about a new wave of industrial revolution with far more influence than the previous three revolutions.

A Deep Dive into One UI’s Design

There isn’t much you can’t do with a smartphone these days, from filming content to banking online from anywhere with just a few taps. But there is always room for improvement, and Samsung Electronics is constantly seeking to make the smartphone experience more intuitive to help us do even more. This is why One UI was created.

Unveiled in November 2018, One UI improved smartphone usability for millions of users. After two years of further evolution, Samsung launched One UI 3 in December 2020, building on the design, efficiency, and user experience of the original across various devices. Now Samsung is raising the bar yet again with One UI 3.1. From February 18th, the latest One UI is bringing updates to support powerful functionality for some existing smartphones.[1]

So what kind of experience can users enjoy with One UI 3? Samsung Mobile Press sat down with the designers of One UI to ask them what we can expect.

The 4 Principles of One UI

1) Focus on the task at hand
2) Interact naturally
3) Be comfortable to view
4) Make things responsive

These four principles were established by One UI designers to give users the best experience possible.

The fourth principle is a completely new principal introduced for One UI 3.1.

“From tablets to foldable phones and regular smartphones, the types of devices people are using has diversified, and the number of features and functions has also increased,” said Principal UX Designer Jeonggun Choi. “Following this trend, new principles were needed to provide the best layout for our users.” Whether an app is running on the Galaxy S21, Galaxy Tab, or the foldable Galaxy Z series, the UI is optimized for each device.

When using the Samsung Notes app on smartphones with regular sized displays, for example, users can access the app menu by pressing the navigation button at the top left side of the screen. But on the Galaxy Z Fold and Tab series, users can take advantage of the larger display by having the entire menu always in view, without having to press anything.

As part of the fourth principle, Samsung has also improved the accessibility experience by recommending features that complement the ones already in use. When someone with impaired or weakened vision has High contrast fonts turned on, for example, One UI suggests other features that improve visibility such as Bold font or Dark mode on the Recommended for you screen. One UI also reduces the hassle of having to sort through several menus by allowing users to turn off any accessibility features they are using from a single screen.

“Accessibility features are so diverse that it can often be difficult to use them to their full potential,” said Jeonggun Choi. “The ‘Recommended for you’ function increases convenience and helps users get more out of those features by identifying and recommending ones that users may need. We’ve also made it easy to use these features only when needed by allowing users to turn the features on and off while in use on one page.”

Galaxy Ecosystem Allows for Seamless Connectivity Between Devices

Another perk offered by One UI 3 is the ability to seamlessly switch between smartphones, tablets, and laptops. Taking into account the increased use of tablets and laptops spurred by a boom in remote learning and work, the new update provides a ‘connected device experience.’ This seamless ecosystem is paramount to enhancing study and work productivity.

“A new feature called ‘Continue apps on other devices’[2] has been added so that users can continue whatever they were doing on their smartphone – whether browsing a web page or working on a draft in Samsung Notes – on their tablet,” said Principal UX Designer Min-Young Chang. “Users can also copy text on their smartphone and paste it onto their tablet.”

In addition, users can connect their Book Cover Keyboard to both their tablet and smartphone with the Wireless keyboard sharing feature. The new Auto Switch feature also automatically connects Galaxy Buds to whichever device is playing media, so that users can seamlessly switch between their smartphones and tablets.

Connected device experiences are not only available with mobile devices, they are also available on home appliances such as TVs. Starting with One UI 3, users can use Smart View to enjoy multimedia content from their smartphone on their TV alongside the camera feed from their smartphone. This is especially beneficial for users who work out at home, allowing them to compare their movements with those of their virtual instructor.

“Starting with the One UI 3.1 update, users can cast their Google Duo video calls onto their TV with one just click,” said Jeonggun Choi. “With an increasing number of people connecting with their family via video calls and conducting virtual work meetings, this is an especially useful feature.”

A Customizable Galaxy Experience to Suit Your Needs

Smartphones are no longer just a tool that gives users the power to do various tasks—they’ve become a means of self-expression. Perhaps the best example is decorating the Galaxy Z Flip with stickers to create your own unique phone. But there are many ways to create a custom smartphone experience with the latest updates. “We have implemented a diverse array of features to let users use their smartphone as a form of self-expression,” said Jeonggun Choi. “Users can enjoy a customized Galaxy experience by choosing a video as the incoming and outgoing call screen or changing the wallpaper in the Messages app.”

“We first analyzed the usage for each feature available in previous models,” said Min-Young Chang. “After ranking the features based on their popularity, we placed the most used features at the top while hiding the least used features to simplify the panel.”

Saving Your Time, Even if it’s Only 1 Second

Another updated feature available through One UI 3.1 is the integration of the Clock app with Digital Wellbeing’s Bedtime mode.[3] After opening the Clock app, users can tap See More, then tap Set bedtime to set their sleep and wake-up times. Users no longer have to switch between two apps, making setting a daily sleep schedule easier and faster.

“Users might not be aware of all of the One UI design updates that have been made but these improvements combined help users recognize and react to various features quicker and in a more direct manner. Even if it saves 1 to 2 seconds of user’s time, I think it would have been worth the effort,” said Jeonggun Choi. “The One UI designers are going to continue coming up with designs that elevate our users’ happiness and satisfaction with Galaxy devices.”
